You saw them separately before but never all them together in one comparison shot. The picture has been taken by Giuglio Sciorio. You see the Nocticron 42,5mm f/1.2 (coming early 2014), the current 25mm f/1.4 and the 15mm f/1.7 lens (coming 2014). You can see more pictures including an 35-100mm image at Smallcamerabigpicture.com where he posted a Lumix PPE Report. This is what he writes about the new Nocticron lens:
Metal, glass and built to last – It’s a very well made lens with a feel that is all Leica. Because of all the metal and glass its not a light lens. That said it’s not very heavy but it has heft. The aperture ring is smooth and easy to operate and the aperture itself is very round. I did not count how many blades make up the aperture but I am expecting some very nice bokeh. The Leica 42.5/1.2 is a new level of premium glass for the Micro 4/3 system so don’t expect it to be inexpensive. This is a pro grade lens all the way and like all Leica glass any aberrations are corrected optically not through firmware so expect this lens to perform well on both Lumix and Olympus bodies.
Thanks Giulio!

THE holy trinity!
meh, 15mm is not wide enough for me. a 10 mm would suit me better 🙂
I’ll preorder the 15 right now
THE DREAM TEAM.
WOW.
Great job Panasonic!
They surely must update the 25mm to a new barrel with aperture ring (perhaps upgrade the mechanicals too, AF motor etc).
Or come out with a 25mm f/1.2… ooooh.
I second this motion
I third.
fourth
Fifth. I have the 25. Plan to get both of the new lenses if they sample well. I’d swap out the 25 for a new version w/aperture ring just for the sake of consistency. Once someone makes a pro level UWA zoom, my kit would be complete.
I so 5th that for the f/1.2 aperture.
Are you a mind reader? My thoughts exactly. As soon as I saw the 25 next to the other 2 it looked so out of place. Refresh build and give it at an aperture ring to match the others.
You guys are so 2000 and late. I said this weeks ago on this forum. Great minds…. 🙂
Any news about the aperture ring function on Olympus bodies?
I’m salivating for that 15mm.
I hope the aperture ring works automatically with Olympus cameras (e.g. setting the aperture in Aperture Priority and Manual modes and being ignored in Shutter Priority and Program modes) But I fear it will work like on manual lenses.
If it works like typical Leica digital lenses previously, then setting it to A will put it into A mode (full auto or Shutter Priority). Taking it off A will then put you into Manual Mode or Aperture Priority.
For people used to Leica and/or manual lenses, it is a much faster and more intuitive way to set aperture.
Yes, I’m aware of how it’s supposed to work, but will it work that way with Olympus cameras? (Or Panasonic cameras for that matter).
Will the camera recognize the lens’ aperture setting (including the “A” setting)?
Will the camera focus with the lens wide open and close the diaphragm to the manually set aperture automatically to take the picture?
There are no other m4/3 autofocus lenses with aperture rings to compare to.
No reason why it shouldn’t. Otherwise m43 would fail as a standard if X lenses can’t talk to Y cameras and vice versa.
There’s plenty of reason why it wouldn’t work.
The cameras were probably not built to expect an aperture ring on the lens.
This might require a significant firmware upgrade for the camera to recognize this feature.
This is the same as using the L-Fn button of an Olympus lens on a Panasonic body.
You can’t because the camera doesn’t recognize it.
As far as I know, Panasonic hasn’t issued a firmware update to fix this (and the 12-50 has been out for 18+ months)
My bet is that you will have to keep this lens in “A” for automatic operation, or use it like a fully manual lens (manually opening the lens to focus, and closing it to meter and shoot).
Curious. How do manual lenses meter on Olympus bodies, then? My understanding is Full Manual and Aperture Priority still works with manual lenses on Oly bodies, and they work the same way as this Leica – using a manual aperture ring to control the opening. This Leica just adds a Full Auto mode to that.
So _theoretically_ with this Leica on an Oly body you could lose only the Shutter Priority. Correct me if I am wrong.
When you use manual lenses in Aperture Priority or Manual Mode, you set the aperture in the lens and the camera meters normally (based on the reduced amount of light).
The problem comes when you pick a small aperture and try to focus. You might need to open up the lens to focus and then stop it down again to shoot.
The camera can’t keep the diaphragm open for focusing like it does on native lenses. (or like manual cameras used to do).
It’s like being in DOF preview mode full time.
If this Leica lens doesn’t communicate with the camera, it could have the same problem.
PDAF typically doesn’t work beyond f/6 or so. If CDAF is the same, you could might lose autofocus at those apertures.
Why would Panasonic include the aperture ring if it didn’t work with their own cameras? That’s pretty much common sense that they would make sure it works. You site the Olympus lens function button, but it does in fact work on an Olympus body since Olympus camera bodies have the option to manipulate that button in the menus. Panasonic on the other hand couldn’t have anticipated that function button, and therefore had no reason to include extra function button options in their menus unless their own lenses required it (which none do). You’re way overthinking the situation, it’s just an additional way to change the aperture other than the dials on the camera body itself. Panasonic built a 25mm 1.4 lens w/ an aperture ring for 4/3rd cameras and it worked just fine.
“Why would Panasonic include the aperture ring if it didn’t work with their own cameras?”
Of course it will work, but how? Will it actually set the aperture in the camera or will it work as a manual lens?
When you slide back the manual focus ring on Olympus lenses, the camera can no longer engage magnification or peaking automatically, it just disconnects the contacts.
The aperture ring might just work like that (I hope not).
What you are saying about the L-Fn button is exactly what I said, and bolsters my point.
Olympus may not provide a firmware update for this just like Panasonic hasn’t provided a firmware update for that.
“it’s just an additional way to change the aperture other than the dials on the camera body itself.”
That’s what I hope. That’s what none of us know at this point because we haven’t used the lens. It might work like the manual clutch on the Olympus lenses.
“Panasonic built a 25mm 1.4 lens w/ an aperture ring for 4/3rd cameras and it worked just fine.”
Well, I did not know that. If that’s the case, it gives me more hope that the ring will be able to control the camera’s setting, which is what I would prefer.
Fact: On 4/3rds Oly bodies (E-3 and E-5 for me) and 4/3 version of PL25, the aperture ring DID NOT work.
So, there is no certainty whatsoever that the m4/3 lens aperture rings will work on m4/3rds Oly bodies.
I see no reason why it shouldnt work …all manual lenses works nice in A/S/M mode on olympus bodies…Q is if you want exif info …but with electronic contacts…I see no issue even exif
Well, no manual lenses don’t work quite right in “S” mode because the camera can’t select the aperture.
Also I am not asking whether this will work. We know it will. What I am asking is HOW will it work?
Will the ring be able to set the aperture on the camera, thus taking the place of the aperture dial, or will it work like a manual lens, where the camera works as if there were no lens attached (Panasonic even calls it “Shoot without lens” in their menus).
sorry you are right no S mode with manual lens…and now undersand whats your Q. ..but even it will not change aperture in camera but in lens(makes the hole smaller) …I think the aperture ring on lens is good cause its like dedicated buton and its faster change aperture with ring like on button and then clicking up/down…I think the apperture ring on lens +500 eur lens is a must
The PanaLeica lenses with aperturering works only with Panasonic products. Set to A is auto, set to other settings is aperture you choose instead via control wheels.
On Oly bodies the ring does nothing.
I have the 43 PanaLeica 25/1.4 with aperturering and both 43 and m43 Oly bodies and have to use control dials to set aperture.
The Pana LC-1 also had aperturering on it’s fixed zoom. Very intuitive to work with.
Shame it doesn’t work with Oly.
This is exactly what I was expecting.
Well.. if the lens gets really popular maybe Olympus will update their firmware. 🙂
Really? It doesn’t spin the mode dial on either of my camera bodies, no matter whether it’s set to “A” or an aperture value.
I guess the Panasonic lenses will work the same way as Oly 12/2 or 17/1.8 lenses with activated aperture rings work.
Those lenses don’t have aperture rings. They have manual focus mode rings.
What I fear is that the Leica lens will work exactly like that:
Move it off “A” and it just disengages the electronic contacts.
Why not ignore it in shutter mode? If you want the manual aperture ring to work in shutter mode, you might as well be in manual mode since that is basically what you’re trying to accomplish being able to change both the aperture/shutter manually. As far as Program mode goes, again it makes sense that it would be ignored. If you’re going to change the aperture manually you’re basically in aperture priority mode. Think about why it isn’t included rather than just complaining that it isn’t included in every setting.
That is exactly what I said.
I love your Monthy Pithon reference. And I’m also going to break my piggybank for that 15mm 🙂
I already have budget to buy 25mm 1.4 … but this new 15 mm is tempting…
what would be the price of 15mm ?
I can safely say that the 25mm is near permanently attached on my GH2. I cannot speak for everyone else, but its a choice you likely won’t regret.
thanks…I am buing it is fastes AF lens now and the fov is pretty variable for multiple kind of shots … was just curios what could be rumor price of this new 17mm as it looks like it would have metal barel
Wow, lens for m4/3 which are designed right? Quite suprising in positive way. I prefer heavier lens with optical corrections over plasticy software based lens. Especially when these software lens cost as much as regular ones or more..
It is just software correction vs size -> the retail price is made mostly by marketing and demand- development and production are just small parts of the pricing.
And actually, i prefere a good compromise in size and software correction- like the 17mm f1.8
I would love the Leica 25mm to be smaller-if its possible via software-? perfect! the price can stay the same…
I understand that Leica has to protect its reputation, so its great to have them onboard with non corrected glass. Really looking forward to the 15mm- the other 2 lenses are not part of my holy trinity.
Maybe i will go for 15pana/30sigma/45oly but im not sure about the middle-and hoping for a small, fast, highquality 25mm.
At the moment im switching between a two lensset 14/30 and a trinity 12/17/45 depending on my mood.
I have an important question to ask..
How did he manage to take that shot? With the tongue?!
Google Glass. LOL.
The GX7 has built in out of camera shooting experience, where it can basically levitate, spiritually, above and capture itself and surroundings in glorious detail, unfortunately it does not do auto ISO in manual in this mode and is limited to ISO 1000.
Good question! Maybe he has a 3rd hand?
Excellent stuff! 30/1.7-50/1.4-85/1.2-90/2.8 Macro equivalents – we are getting there with Leica AF lenses, at last. Now all we need are 20mm Elmarit / 40mm Summicron pancake (like that of the Leica CL) / 135mm Summicron equivalent lenses.
And perhaps reworking the 50 Summilux into an f1.2, as well.
This is a FCKING bad message for the M43 system: A (relatively) fast lens sould be nothing but superpremium. Though a cheaper F1.2 is not such difficult to make for this focus distance.
And it seems that Leica stillcannot understand: the possibility of digital correction is not a weakness but AN INHERENT STRENGTH OF THE SYSTEM which makes MFT much more competitive than other formats.
I’m sorry, but I think it has the opposite effect to what you fear.
A full set of Leica AF lenses would give m43 more credibility, not less. Kind of what happens with Sony’s E/FE once they started making Zeiss lenses for it: people started to take notice and consider it seriously.
Besides, when these Leicas appear it’s not as if the cheaper lenses suddenly disappear. These give you choice at the top end, for people who want it, that’s all.
My choice would be an optically good 42.5/F1.2 with a BUILD QUALITY close to Oly 45/F1.8.
Why I’m forced to have a heavier and much more expensive all-metal lens and aperture ring just because I want narrower DOF? The really good solution would be two releases: A cheap build quality for those who want F1.2 quality in a lighter, cheaper way and a heavy, all metal bodied F1.2 for Leica- and retro-snobs.
Well, you can’t have it.
i can understand that, but how much cheaper would it be? the optics for a good 1.2 will decide more on the costs then the materials for the barrel/housing I think.
Well, let’s forget the Oly 12/2 and just compare Oly 17/1.8 to Oly 45/1.8. The former should be even cheaper as it’s a near standard focal length lens, isn’t it? And it’s more expensive, by 150 USD/EUR.
so you believe its the build quality that decides the price instead? hmmmmm…
The 42.5 at f/1.2 is going to be expensive whatever the barrel is made from. Maybe it would sell for $850 housed in a cheap plastic with no aperture ring. If they’re going to build that, they might as well house it in metal with aperture ring like a proper, professional lens and sell it for $1,000. Who is going to quibble over a $100 here or there at this level and accept a cheap looking lens?
ME.
I simply don’t ever need a lens better built than – say – Pana 45–200. Moreover, metals give lenses nothing else but a snobbish look and an unnecessary increase of weight.
Howl away lone wolf, howl away…….
I agree to an extent- for me, price and IQ are more important than build quality. I like the balance struck by the 45mm 1.8. It’s small, sharp, fast, and priced reasonably.
Sure, I’d like a better MF experience like you get with the higher end lenses, but you also get more weight as a drawback. The 45 weighs nothing.
That said, “f1.2” and “cheap, plastic build” just don’t go together. 1.2 is decidedly exotic for most users, and only discerning buyers will pay the premium for it. Most of those discerning buyers demand a higher quality product.
For me, I’d like to see Olympus release a 25mm 1.8 to pair with the 45mm, with the same build. It still fills a void- cheaper and smaller than the Panny 1.4, and different focal length and cheaper build to not step on the toes of the 17 1.8.
Sell it for $400 to start. Offer it as a kit lens for the rumored lower end EM-5, and I’d be in for a kit.
Exactly that’s the point!
1.2 SHOULDN’T BE decidedly exotic for most users! The problem is that both the manufacturers and buyers are convinced that an F1.2 should be expensive, no matter which system is designed on. And nobody takes in account that e.g. FF 85/1.2 and MFT 42.5/1.2 are not the same thing at all.
Just because you want everything made cheaply with the most important benfit of light weight it doesn’t mean others want the same. Looks like you need to buff up a little, maybe eat a bigger breakfast for improved strength. 😛
A 17mm lens will always cost more to produce than a 45mm.
That’s one of the disadvanatges of m43 crop factor.
Our ‘normal’ focal lengths are in fact more complex designs than the 40-60 mm normals on FF.
Conversely our portrait lengths (on m43) are easier and cheaper to produce.
This is just a stupid urban legend.
Take a 50mm/F1.8 and stretch it to get the half of its original size.
You’ll have a regular 25mm/F1.8…
You have no idea what you are talking about, at all.
I would trade my 45/1.8 in immediately if I could have one with the build quality of the 75/1.8.
I absolutely hate the cheap plastic build of the 45/1.8.
It would be interesting to find out why. Assuming your equipment is a collection of tools rather than fashion accessories.
Making the Nocticron from plastic would save about $25 retail max. What’s happening behind the scenes is this –
M43 is quickly becoming the “DSLR” in the market place. DSLR’s are moving into the Medium format market and Medium format cameras are becoming a niche large format replacement so to speak.
Since sales (at least with Panasonic) are growing quite well there’s be a demand for higher end glass to work with current and future high end cameras. That need has to be met but it will take time. Canon and Nikon have been building their system for decades but I think that although M43 is a newer system its growing quite fast.
Giulio Sciorio, I like your solution to the 25mm’s loose lens hood.
Thanks Bill! We should go shoot sometime soon. I’ll be in town on the 19th and have some workshops coming to Precision in Jan.
Solid build quality has zero to do with equipment being “fashion accessories”. It’s all about smooth function, solidity and minimizing long term wear and tear. After all, lenses are what make a system and what you buy for the long haul.
These days, camera bodies are essentially disposable electronic mounting systems for lenses and given the advances in sensor and other technologies, you’re more likely to buy a new camera every few years than trade-in your lenses. Lenses you use and keep for many years, not just a one or two year camera cycle like the GH or OMD series. So, the better the build quality of your lenses, the longer they’ll last, which means you’ll be using them through many generations of cameras.
Sure, the up-front cost of better lenses is high, but drawn out over many years, better lenses not only give you better image quality, but give you much more bang for your buck.
The 45/1.8, though optically superb, is the cheapest and flimsiest build quality lens across all my systems (Olympus, Nikon, Canon). It is pathetic how weak the plastic of this lens is. There is a plastic ring to cover the hood mount that falls off all the time. The lens feels disposable.
I would *immediately* trade it for something of a proper build quality, and it has nothing to do with fashion accessories.
I have to agree about that ring, but considering its price, I cant complain…this 45mm gave me the best value ever, and since i am not a warzone photographer, I can live with its build. At least way better then when i worked for Vodafone surveying with a Canon 300mm L series which fell apart in 2 pieces while in a cherry picker, because the lens parts unscrewed themselves while in use, and I believe it was a bit more expensive then this 45mm.
The choice is already there, stop complaining like a spoiled child.
No, I have no other choice if I need ~eqv. 85 mm and a DOF of eqv. F2.4.
And please don’t tell me to go on FF if I need shallow DOF.
As Canon is able to make 85/F1.8, perfectly usable on F2.4 for 400–500 USD, it’s nonsense to sell the essentially same thing for MFT for USD 1500. No matter of brand, I’m not really touched by the word ‘Leica’.
It´s a genuine f1.2 lens, not f2.4. The smaller the sensor the more effort it takes to get shallow dof. Don´t you get that? If you need cheap and thin dof than buy a bloody FF.
No, I don’t get that, you’re wrong.
The correct sentence would be like that:
‘The smaller the sensor the more effort it takes to get shallow dof if you want to keep the lens small.’
Otherwise you can get a classic, unexpensive design of a fullframe 85/F2.4, apppend a reasonably good quality 2× inverse teleconverter group at the end and here comes your 42.5/F1.2. (Just FYI: Metabones is expensive because of it’s an UNIVERSAL converter. Designing a dedicated one which works just with a certain lens construction would be much simple and much less expensive. As far as I know many classic 4/3 lenses follow this strategy.)
Where is the catch? The lens would be as big as a FF one, which may not be for MFT users’ sake. But I would accept happily this drawback.
If its as big as “FF”, why bother? There are other options.
No! The real strength of MFT isn’t just the compactness alone.
Rather the fact that you can solve simple task by a small system (small body + small lens) and advanced tasks with a bigger system (small body + bigger lens).
No FF systems can do that! Even the Sony FF needs relatively big lenses even for simple tasks, just take a look on the 28-70 mm kit lens.
V. true.
But in my mind the size of the Zeiss 55/1.8 is even more significant. In order to recover some telecentricity to its desperatly small distance to frame, Sony ended up in ordering lenses which are both big and slow, therefore negating the small size of the body.
That goes to show that in mirrorless a smaller sensor is a far better compromise. How many ages it will take our young turks to realize the mistake they are doing?
“Otherwise you can get a classic, unexpensive design of a fullframe 85/F2.4, apppend a reasonably good quality 2× inverse teleconverter group at the end and here comes your 42.5/F1.2.

I suggest you go start your own lens factory, and sell us all those nice things you claim are easy to do. Given how easy they are (according to you) this shouldn’t be an issue, so where are your lenses?
Well, lookee. Kowa (and SLR Magic) has lenses to sell to you. Fast cheap plastic lenses. Your prayers have been answered, surely. Oh what, no AF?
Hell. AF-cheap plastic fantastic-fast: pick two. You can’t have them all or we’ll all run out of business.
What message? I don’t get it! Canon got some great L lenses who’s reputation is not hurt one bit by any of their kit lenses. 1.8/50 anyone? It ain’t that much slower than the 1.2/50L isn’t it?
Anyone interested in m43 because of Panasonic’s 2.5/14 or Olympus’s 1.8/45 won’t back away because the latest Leica signature costs more alone than both of those lenses bundled with a discontinued body. Period.
I still don’t understand why people WANT/NEED the 42.5mm to cost over $2000, are you people crazy? sure I understand it’s a leica but $2000 for a mft lens ? really ? That’s more than a FF body by today’s standards. AF be damned, I’d much rather spend half of that on a voightlander 0.95 and get even shallower DOF (thank you focus peaking) or even less than that on the 75mm and actually get less DOF AND AF, or even settle for the 45mm 1.8 which is more of a sweet spot (small, AF, sweet IQ).
This lens should go for no more than $1200 top, If you’re gonna start spending more than $2000 on a lens then get a real Leica.
Well, and I am not sure if I really would buy a 2000 lens, it is important to note that lenses hold value better than similar condition bodies, and if built right and treated right will not need to be replaced like the body so I can understand people who would rather spend money on top tier lenses over a new camera body every year. m43 bodies especially just seem to plummet in price, I know because I take advantage of this on ebay all the time, while the lenses are relatively stable.
I see a lens as a better buy than a body as long as you plan on staying in the system because it is part of your kit that stays with you for a much longer time than today’s 11 month life cycle bodies. These lenses do have the one feature I liked about the fuji system, the on lens Aperture control, but I can understand anyone who isn’t making money on photography hesitating on a 2000 prime…but that 15mm looks kind of nice…
Who says it’s going to be priced at $2000?
Plan on it being less than that.
People have been asking (begging even) for that price point all over the comment section here since the Lens was leaked. The problem is not the actual price of the lens itself, it’s the people here that keep asking for ever more expensive gear like that somehow validates them as photographers.
From a logical point of view, Panasonic cannot make this lens much more expensive than the Olympus 75/1.8 or the Voigtländer 42.5/0.95, simply because it would not sell well.
If anyone here was begging for that price, then it was someone that wants this lens to fail. $2000, really? Sounds like someone owns a Oly45mm and doesn’t want it to be shown out by the new Leica…
Yes, I know all that, lenses are much more of an investment than bodies, that’s G.A.S 101. I quoted the FF body pricing only to put things on perspective not because I value bodies over lenses, but the question still stands: $2000+ just for a MFT prime ? seriously ?
Every time this lens in posted on this site the comments section gets filled with gearheads foaming at the mouth with excitement, not for the lens itself, but for the price, you see constant quotes saying ¨this lens should be close to $2000¨ or ¨there’s no way this lens is less that $1800¨ etc, etc…It’s like they want to boast to their friends (do they have any?) that they spent $2000 on a lens and better yet, on a Leica. If you’re after bragging rights then they should go and buy a real Leica body with a real Leica lens, not M4/3.
Same sh·t happened before the 12-40mm was announced, people were deliriously wanting that lens to cost close to $2000 or thereabouts. People need to get real, this is not FF, there’s no justification for that kind of pricing, that strategy will drive m4/3 straight into an even smaller niche and then it’s legacy 4/3rds all over again.
It’s like people forget the amount of planning and research that went into m4/3 in order to make it cost effective, what about short flange distance, software correction (I know this doesn’t have it but still), no mirror, no prism, no AF sensor, no moving parts, etc, etc…It’s like none of this things have any effect on pricing any more, how many years has it been since Oly and Pany recovered the R&D cost of m4/3 ?
Mirrorless is supposed to become the new 135mm, the new standard for everyday photography, the photographic gear for the non-iphone people, for photographers…And IMO m4/3 has the best chance to become the most representative mirrorless format, but $2000 for a Panasonic re-branded prime ? At a time when Sony has a NEW FF system for less ? when Voighlander sell f0.95 lenses for almost half of that ? when SLR magic sell their T0.95 lenses for even less (and with IQ quite close to proper Leicas ?)? seriously, $2000 ? I have no problem spending that level of cash on other photographic gear but I doubt this lens is WORTH that much money, I’d rather spend that money elsewhere or more wisely in other m4/3 gear.
Amen! 🙂
Agreed. If this lens costs much more than $1000, in as much as I like the idea of a f/1.2, I will just have to pass.
Excellent post/rant. Well reasoned and I couldn’t agree more. I fully expect this lens to come in between 800 and 1000.
Well, there goes my money. Must complete the holy trifecta.
no test shots yet 🙁 he had a mockup and a working one offstage (which was not allowed to use for first impressions?)….so we know nothing yet…too bad… damn!
and please correct that moderation “bug” lol
Oh, BTW, what did Giuglio put on the shutter button ? as far as I know the GX7 doesn’t had a threaded Shutter button, so, is that just a sticker or a real soft release accessory for the GX7?

His web site speaks of using the “Pro Dot.”

Ha you beat me to it, in any case, coincidentally Blunty has released a review video just now of this accessories.

With knobs for your pleasure.
This will be an awesome FF ass buster
All waste of money on M43. To big, to heavy, to expensive. These are lenses that need at least an APSC Size sensor.
Why on earth would someone like you, on gov’t assistance and posting from a public library, care about the price of anything?
I hate to encourage you, but that was quite funny. Really.
He’s either getting a few cents for every post he makes here, or he has a mental illness. Please note, these two scenarios are not mutually exclusive.
I was replying to tanngrisnir3. Just to make sure…
Uh, except, of course, being designed for m43, their image circles would not cover an APS-C sensor. There’s not much difference between m43 and APS-C sensors these days, anyway – I compare the E-M5 to a Canon EOS-M and they are pretty much the same.
My guess? m43 for the lower-to-mid range, and FF for the mid-to-high end. APS-C will die soon enough. Even Fuji is abandoning it and working on FF now.
Ironymous,
Can you please show me where it says that Fuji is going away from APSC. They still releasing superb APSC camera’s and lenses. Yes they will go FF and for smaller and cheaper hold the APSC line wich is ass small as M43 but way better. M43 is doomed if they keep coming up with these rediculous expensive toys. Please get real.
How much are they paying you ? just out of curiosity .
What do you people gain from arguing with other people over the internet ? ego boost ? What kind of sad miserable life do you all live that you have to waste your personal time on a site dedicated to a system you hate (which is ridiculous by itself) and post propaganda to people that have made their minds already ? You do realize your opinion is not going to affect my decision to support any given system, right ? And you do understand that I have all the free will to buy any number of system simultaneously, right ? Keep your bigotry to yourself.
Also, call me when APS-C has somehow managed to break the rules of physics and managed to shrink their lenses beyond its image circle, or when APS-C has managed to build an 5 axis IBIS system around their ¨huge¨ (JA!) sensor without making their bodies DSLR sized all over again.
Seriously, if you’re gonna trash m4/3 at least bring the proper guns, call when you get a full suit of medium Format gear, then we’re talking.
He clearly has a mental health issue, but watch out – he’s pulling you into his sphere of useless psycho-babble!
Oh I was just trolling you for fun. Haha.
But yes, APS-C is far more likely to die rather than m43. And once Fuji goes full frame, its APS-C lenses will become what the E lenses are to the new Alpha FE system, while the bodies will tick away until they burst into flames.
The cheaper lenses for m43 still exist. And these lenses far from doom them. This thread is getting a large number of comments due to the amount of interest, most of them favorable. Meanwhile, there’s crickets over at the thread below this about cheap SLR Magic lenses. Maybe Panasonic should create 10 or 15 more kit zooms, instead?
+1
I hope it’s not ridiculously expensive. Otherwise it will be overkill for tiny sensor.
Viezevure, I think you should go away. You never have anything positive to say about micro four thirds. Every camera system has it’s positives. You still don’t seem to able to navigate mentally into any kind of grey zone. For you everything is either black or white, negative or positive. You keep repeating yourself about the micro four thirds system and it’s sensor size. I own several systems including four thirds, aps-c and full frame and they each have their positives and negatives. Your comments have become repetitive to the extent that you have no credibility and you lack impartiality. I don’t think that you have ever handled a four thirds sensored camera.
Troll.
Why would it be bad on a 1.9x and then magically be good on a 1.6x crop. Nonsense.
Must admit I am completely jealous of the awesome lenses this system has, they are exceptional.
My only concern is that it’s cameras are becoming larger and more expensive.
I do appreciate that good glass is a long-term investment and hold it’s value, but cameras are not.
Also one can hope that one day Olympus will realize that’s its users have discovered the movie button.
When this happens I will give up my NEX until then I’m stuck.
The cameras are not becoming larger. There is one high end larger camera from each manufacturer with a lot more controls and buttons, and the same range of smaller cameras that they have had since the beginning of m43.
That’s why we’re up to 5 or 6 in the models e.g. GF6, EPL-5, EP-5, G6 etc.
All they’ve done is add a higher end to the range.
As far as Olympus are concerned they pretty much all use the same sensor regardless of what level/size you decide to use.
And I’m pretty sure it will soon be the same with Panasonic.
Perhaps,
That is not to say that the cameras are bad, in fact the reviews are very good.
still….
the GX7 is about 40% thicker and 30% heavier than GX1.
http://camerasize.com/compare/#472,183
the E-M1 is 50% thicker (mostly grip) and 24% heavier than E-M5
http://camerasize.com/compare/#482,289
Depending on your region, they were significantly more expensive as well.
In use the EM1 is just a few MM wider, taller and deeper(from the larger eyecup, the EM5’s eyecup sucks btw). The grip is still shorter or as short as an M43rds lens out there, so in practice there is no difference unless you carry the camera w/o a lens attached.
http://camerasize.com/compact/#482.5,289.5,ha,t
I will never understand this obsession with very thin bodies when the protruding lens is what gives the camera its thickness. You can’t take photos without a lens.
The GX7 is not 40% thicker than GX1, that % would make it the size of a DSLR, use your eyes, the body itself is pretty much the same, They’ve measured the EVF into the depth calculation.
Now, weight and price, that’s another matter, specially for the EM1, that I agree.
yes, I tried to edit the post but no luck.
I wanted to add (mostly grip and viewfinder) ….
The VF size absolutely matters when it’s in my jacket pocket. In fact, that’s the main reason why I’m not getting one this year (the second reason being current price — I got a GX1 2-3 months after release). I think Pana missed the mark here, if they made a GX1 successor with a VF that big it should have been removable. I guess GM1 is a better camera for me (but I’ll probably end up waiting for GX8/GM2 anyway).
Simple, don’t buy a high end m4/3 camera if size is a deal breaker for you. Panasonic is releasing the GM1, which is the smallest m4/3 camera to date, yet you say the cameras keep getting bigger? Your view is very narrow picking out only certain cameras while neglecting others that are available.
And, of course, he says he uses a Nex, which means most of the lenses he uses are relatively huge compared to m43 equivalents. An m43 kit, including several lenses, is going to be smaller than an equivalent Nex kit, in spite of the tiny Sony body.
Yes there are smaller m4/3 cameras but that was not my point.
My comparison was like for like….
I compared GX1 to GX7 – EM5 to EM1 – GH2 to GH3
The trend, as I saw it…the (m4/3) cameras are getting bigger and more expensive. (comparable model)
The industry is going the opposite direction, generally speaking cameras are getting cheaper and smaller.
The comment about NEX and its lens sizes is as irrelevant as the criticism of the “small” m4/3 sensor.
My NEX-5T with 35mm f/1.8 OSS is smaller than THE EP-5 with 17mm f/1.8.
I am surprised about the defensive replies to my post, which was in general positive about the system.
Why don’t you compare GF6 to GF1 and G6 to G1. You took worse comparison.
What about them?
Are you claiming that the Panasonic cameras are getting smaller and cheaper?
What you should do is to take for example a Nikon released the same year as the G1 (Nikon D90 – 620g & 900 USD body), it’s price and size and then compare it to the release of G6 this year (Nikon D5300 – 480g & 800 USD body).
Most consumers have realized that cameras hold little value over time and such not willing to pay as much as before.
I’m not sure that Panasonic and Olympus has gotten this message.
If you have any other research I would be willing to look at it.
D90 belongs to the same line as D7100 that is 62 g more including battery and was released at 1,200 USD body only. Your arguments have no value if you cheat with comparisions.
One could also argue that the D7100 is the successor of D300.
The D7100 and D300 have more manual controls and more knobs than the D90.
Until we have the D400, the D7100 is the closest one.
I still hold on to my premise that the m4/3 cameras in general getting more expensive and bigger
(My comparison was like for like… GX1 to GX7 – EM5 to EM1 – GH2 to GH3)
And that this is not the trend of the general camera industry.
And how about lumix gf models? And how about the gm1? Did the E-Px, E-PLx and E-PMx models get bigger?
Its easy to ‘prove’ any point by cherry-picking your examples.
GX7 -> GM1 same guts and it is not only smaller but cheaper.
I was not aware that the GM1 was the successor of GX7.
Try the NEX with 24mm, which is a closer comparison to the 17, given both are 35mm-ish equivalents.
Also, the EP5 is a higher end body with dual dial controls, so its a closer comparison to the NEX6 or 7 (the EP5 lacks an EVF though) than the 5 , which is a mid-range body with single dial controls like the EPL or EPM series.
The Sony 35/1.8 vs the Pana 25/1.4 might make your point a little better, but even then, there is the Pana 20/1.7 if you want a small lens in the 35-50mm-equiv range.
http://camerasize.com/compact/#387.383,478.85,459.30,478.86,459.352,478.87,459.93,ha,t
Yes you are right, my NEX-7 plunged 200 feet and I replaced temporarily with the NEX-5.
I was trying to make a point that the size differences between most NEX lenses and m4/3 is not that great.
Equally I disagree when people claim that m4/3 suck because they are smaller than APC-S, this is not true anymore.
The Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is a special lens beautifully made, exceptional quality, sharp and very expensive.
If you compare it to other 24mm f/1.8 APC-S lenses it is a fact not that large and heavy. (one of the smallest available)
If you compare the NEX-7 with 35/1.8 vs the GX7 with Pana 25/1.4 they are about equal size.
If you want a lens that gives the same fov and has the same absolute aperture for a larger medium, you either end up with a bigger lens or a lower optical quality. Focal length isn’t the same as length, but there is a relation between the 2.
@Jack
Are you worried about the lack of updates for the Sony APSC system this year? I was thinking about buying a nex and using a metabones with a 35mm…and probably nothing else…as a second camera, but I have really been wondering if Sony will stick with the format, there are still some glaring holes in the NEX lens lineup where the m43 has multiple options on a lot of ‘standard’ sized primes and zooms.
Just curious I have no stock in any M43 company and I love what Sony is doing with the FF mirrorless bodies.
At this point I would probably forget the NEX series.
For a little bit more money you’ll get the full frame Alpha in a body which is not that much bigger.
The capabilities of this camera is far beyond any NEX at this point.
The difference in sensor size between a full frame and APC-S sensor larger than APC-S and m4/3.
GM1? Google it. Tell us how much smaller you want to go.
Hmm, yes, the GM1 is really much larger then previous m4/3 cameras, this must be a trend!
Love the lenses…can’t stand the dweeb that is holding them. Can’t stand his website either. (I guess he has some in with Panasonic…but he has no “cred”)
Really annoying. 🙂
Um. He stepped on your toe once during the queue for coffee?
If it was really the same Giulio who claimed (some posts ago)that the 45mm f/1.8 is not sharp wide-open, then i would have to agree with you. But its possible it was a copycat saying that.
Nope it was really me. The 45/1.8 is really not that sharp wide open. Put a raw file from any camera with that lens into C1 Pro at 1.8 then the same exact image at f/4 and you’ll see a world a difference. I shot over 100 assignments with Olympus cameras and with that lens and am not fond of a jump in sharpness.
Here’s on assignment that spans three covers and took a summer to shoot – http://www.flickr.com/photos/gsciorio/sets/72157632540273534/
The Leica designed glass as less of a jump in sharpness throughout the aperture range which is what I prefer. It does not make the 45/1.8 a bad lens. It’s a lens that is well suited for it’s price range and target audience.
I’m cool with the haters and trolls that follow me around the web. I remember when I got my first troll, my team and I had a congratulatory call. The gear I shoot with, my message and my openness is unique in the industry and I’m cool with it. The positives out weighs the negatives always so much love to my trolls. They keep the conversation going!
Giulio, yes i read one of your previous comments about C1 pro, but i dont use it. Lightroom is my starting point for checking the raw files. The 45mm does not show that big of a jump in IQ from f/1.8 to f/4, not even in a graphic. So I wonder how it visually can be that dramatic. Did you use multiple copies of that lens? I swirched from the silver to the black one recently. Did lots of portraits with both of them. I only shoot at 1.8, and I never felt the need for more sharpness. I used the summilux too, also wide open all the time, also a great performer indeed, and imo it renders the sharpness more laidback/analog style, while the 45 is almost too sharp(depending on the skin of the model) I know there are quite a few lenses which have this “sudden jump” in IQ from wide open to few stops down. But the 45mm is not one of them.
Get the demo of C1 Pro 6. Its free for 30 days and well worth it. Not only will you get amazing color from RAW files but you can see the true optical performance of your glass. C1 Pro does not read the embedded lens data like LR does. With most M43 glass the firmware corrections are read by LightRoom on import.
Very well could be my copy. I only used one in silver but it was a shipping unit not a prototype.
Sometimes the software correction goes too far as in the case of the Oly 12 f/2.
The “correction” fixes the center of the image but stretches the edges.
Any people along the edges are turned into Coneheads.
Any round glasses or plates on a table become oval shaped.
The uncorrected version looks much better
I’ve had to manually de-correct some of these in LR or process them in Capture-One, which doesn’t apply corrections.
Because its not
it is, believe me
I just call it the way I see it.
I am an accomplished photographer. This guy is a self proclaimed wannabe who is an attention whore and has much less talent than he continually tries to profess.
Question: what is the first thing you see when you go to his page about the lenses?
(Hint: a picture of him! LOL.)
Just my opinion…I find him very annoying…I am done with my rant…love this site…I will just try to ignore his schictt in the future.
God! I’m with you on that! This guy is a joke. Zero credibility (pany fanboy) and a mediocre photographer.
Can you say “snap shots”???
Is this your personal diary ? who the hell cares about Giuglio ? who cares about the people that annoy you ? If he’s a poser or whatever so be it, who cares ? Distance yourself from the situation, take some perspective and analyze your comments, does it really affect you ? Probably not so take your ridiculous vendetta elsewhere, we’re here to discuss m4/3 news.
+1000
Hey, didn’t you read that Bob B. is an accomplished photographer? He’s an ACCOMPLISHED PHOTOGRAPHER.
Ahh, unlike all the unaccomplished photographers.
Here are some P.H.O.T.O.G.R.A.P.H.S.

The guy is a joke!
But ming thein robin wong and pekka poka are ok in your book right?
BOB.B is right! Giulio sucks, plain & simple.
You are a beginner hobby shooter, nothing ells. That dont qualify as accomplished in my book.
Sour Grapes that you didn’t get in with Panasonic? What have you done much to contribute back to the photographic community? Too busy being an accomplished photographer?
Fast autofocus lenses are going to be BIG. Given the increasing light sensitivities of the new sensors how fast is fast enough? How big is too big? I have all three Voigtlander f0.95 lenses, of which I have used the 17.5 the most (natural lighting video work mostly). They have great optical attributes and the build quality is top notch, but they are heavy, which on a G or GH body is OK. However, with the svelte GX7 and the tiny GM1, together with the f2.8 12-35 and 35-100, will I continue to use them, or will I opt for the convenience and immediacy of autofocus and zoom at the expense of low light opportunity? Never thought I’d tout AF zooms over MF primes, but given the imagery we are seeing from the GX7/GM1 sensor, just might. The photos will tell the story over time, but I’m sensing a trend away from big fast and heavy optics. After all, we are into m43 because of smaller size and portability.
I have the Voigtländer Trinity, too and have no problem with any of them on my GX7. The size and weight is no big deal for me. Clearly, the lack of autofocus is no deal-breaker, either. On those rare occasions that I want AF, I have other lenses.
Nevertheless, the PL 42.5mm looks like a fantastic lens and a great addition to the M4/3 stable of lenses! Can’t wait to see image samples. That little 15mm looks pretty compelling, too. It’s great to see aperture rings added to AF lenses, too.
Just for you I will post the little GM1 mounted on some of my bigger guns! Should have it soon.
Strange how “Leica” is repeated over and over and applied to lenses Leica have very little to do with. Did they design them? Did they make them? Did they personally apply the Leica badge? Actually it’s not strange at all and is all down to marketing.
Actually yes, Leica engineers designed the glass. They are built in a Panasonic factory.
Personally, I think they’re about as “Leica” as my socks.
What caught my eye was the repeated use of the word “Leica” which just seemed like trying too hard.
The lenses may be very nice and I see nothing bad in being designed by Sigma and made by Panasonic and I’d rather they stopped at that point. I see no reason to add the extra word “Leica.”
All IMVHo, of course 😀
Even if Sigma designed the blueprints, and Panasonic built it, it’s still very possible Leica engineers still helped, especially if, as suggested, it was with the glass. Unless you watched the entire process from start to finish, you don’t know any better than the rest of us.
However, it’s called Leica because Leica put their name on it. We can assume they had some hand in it, or we can assume they did not. Either way, a name in the camera business is important, and they trust the lenses enough to put their name on it, which should be enough to continue calling it a Leica.
I had a Geo Prism for a while, I didn’t go around calling it a Toyota Corolla even if that’s what it was based off of and mostly was (in actuality, it was a join venture… which is probably exactly what the Pan Lecia lens is). There’s no point in getting bent out over the name. Pan 25mm, Leica 25mm, Pan Leica 25mm, they all work, and none are incorrect to say, as it IS the branding on the actual lens.
Actually, your statement is anything but humble. I don’t much care for Sciorio’s over the top love of Panasonic gear (even though I mostly own Panasonic), but your “opinion” is based on zero knowledge or insight. Just because it’s an opinion doesn’t mean it isn’t wrong.
Oh no!! Please admin no more panasonic crap from this giulio siccocorio!
“The Leica 42.5/1.2 is a new level of premium glass for the Micro 4/3 system” REALLY ??! And you can say that without use the lens? What a idiot!
You’re so into lumix that you don’t know that olympus already have premium built lenses. Metal lenses is new only for lumix fans man.
I did use the lens and if you read my post you’d know that. I’m going to HQ this weekend and am hoping to test with the lens…but then again you didn’t read that either did you?
You’re just a IDIOT giulio. Crazy baldhead
I like you portrait work Giulio, you have a very modern style that is innovative in my opinion. I don’t know about crazy but you do have a bald head 🙂
Uggh, why is this site infested with brand-loyal wankers? Pany fanboy this. Oly fanboy that…You people are sickening, if anything is ever going to kill this system is you, arguing about brands in a codependent system…m4/3 is not about Oly or Pany alone, stop thinking like you’re a Pany user or an Oly user and start thinking as a m4/3 user FOR ONCE!
Also, why do you people have to whine about every single blogger out there? why don’t YOU start a gear blog ? There’s no single blog(er) out there that hasn’t had poo thrown at their faces ? Steve Huff, Giuglio, Ming thein, pekka potka, Robing Wong, Eric Kim, Blunty, luminous landscape, etc…Don’t you realize that it doesn’t matter who is at the other side of the screen, you will always complain about something ? Don’t you wonder what all those complains have in common ? The common element IS YOU, yes, you are the problem, not the world.
Go live your life, take pictures and stop giving a fck about people on the internet.
Everytime I check the comments here, I’m baffled by the bizarre Panasonic/Olympus turf war that seems to be going on. I consider myself a m43 user, not a Panasonic or an Olympus user. Hell, my gear bag has lenses and bodies from both manufacturers. I think that’s the strength of the system is that it’s not just one company developing lenses and bodies.
This whole “You’re a fanboy! No, YOU’RE the fanboy!” spiel just seems so so counterproductive.
Same here. Bodies from both, lenses from both.
I agree with you. I was an Olympus Visionary before and enjoyed working with the Olympus team and their cameras. For my needs of mixing stills + motion + sound I found the Lumix cameras work better in that regard.
People on this site are more into arguing then about photography which is a shame but I’m happy that Andrea is helping to turn the conversation on photographer with the M43 system that is both Olympus AND Panasonic.
Or maybe Panasonic offered you more freebies and trips to Japan?
I agree it’s sickening to see people turning micro four thirds in to a divided turf war, slinging abuse and critisicm between Olympus and Panasonic. Cant we all just get along and take photos with our incredible IQ with on amazingly portable equipment?
Except of course the horrible beige rendering of the Panasonic JPG’s 😉
I alredy onw the 25 pana I change it for the 20mm and I think it was a mistake in my experience the 20 1.7 is sharper than the 25mm 1.4 and more usuable. The 42 is bigger and heavier than the 45 2.8 pana. I sold it for the 45mm oly much more lighter and little With similar iq.
Perhaps pros are going to spend the money to buy a 42mm 1.2 pana but I think that loosing the original m 4/3 concept small/inexpensive is a mistake at least for me.
I think the point must be make with the reference of the oly 45mm for pana leica, make a better and fast lens than the oly, with a minumun cost in size and wheight and a top price below 800€ -oly 75 is at 900€-
So as conclusion for me the sign of Leica inst a guaranty at all and good for they that have the money they have a new pice of male jewerly and bad for the rest of us.
My hopes are in the tiny 15mm 1.7 . Good and fat af enought to replace .y oly 17 1.7? I doubt it but we will se e some first test soon I expect.
I <3 the 25mm 1.4 on my E-M1! I'm really looking forward to these others 🙂
Don’t fuji have optically corrected primes with aperture rings for about 1/3rd the price?
Did you see any prices listed for these Panasonic lenses? The Fuji 56 f/1.2 will be selling for $900. I didn’t read anywhere the 42.5 will be selling for $2,700.
I read (further up) the 42.5 is expected to be $2000. Amazon has the Fuji 35 for $600
If $2000 is accurate than it just seems like a LOT more
This exactly. Fuji is releasing a 56mm 1.2 at $900ish. If this cost more. It’ll be a sad day. Given fuji’s reputation with its lenses. I would expect the 56mm to be optically very very good and the build to be very good.
YOu may be right, I think the $2000 price tag being thrown around is ridiculous, it will probably cost around $1000, most likely a little over.
It does have me interested, I have the OM 50mm f1.2 lens and enjoy the rendering very much, then I have the Oly 50mm f2 and the Oly 45mm f1.8… So a busy focal length for me and I cant really justify the tag… But there are many who would.
I can’t stand this guilio. Always there to say lies on olympus and to glorify panashit. Very sad admin reblog his shit. He’s just a frustrated pany fanboy.I’m pretty sure he hates DPreview after the gx7 review lol
When people as Robin Wong writes passionately about new Olympus lenses or cameras, its OK.
When Guilio writes passionately about Panasonic he is an idiot and a frustrated fanboy.
Please stop this on 43rumors!
Too much Olympus fanboys here.
There are fanboys of all kinds here. Please be not direspectful. Otherwise I will have to start to moderate the discussion!
Yes please! Now we got a new kind of troll: the Giulio haters… 😉
PLEASE moderate these disussions, or at least use one of the many systems available to force people to login and verify their identify.
YES! Admin PLEASE implement some kind of moderating system, I love this site like one of my nuts but it’s really gone to hell for a long time, it’s not like the early days when people were excited about any kind of news or rumors about ANY brand of gear, this site has become INFESTED with trolls of all kinds and colors.
Admin, these are just suggestions but PLEASE apply any one of them at least:
– Assign a team of moderators
– Implement a Log in system
– Get 1 out of 1000s of WordPress PLug ins out there for moderation
– Implement a IP ban system to get rid of repeat offenders
– SERIOUSLY, get a moderating system (plug-in, service, etc)
– Some weeks ago this site featured a rating system for a few hours, PLEASE bring it back
And please make sure it has an ignore feature!
LV is right…
TOO MANY OLYMPUS FANBOYS ARE PLAUGING THE SITE.
Admin, clearly you see this, yet you do nothing. You need someone to help you moderate this site before its too late! These unwarranted attacks are going to far.
Most of the comments here are simply attacks, instead of talking about the topic at hand!
Olympus should remake a 45mm version with 75mm style build quality and optics. Priced around $500. The Nocticron 42.5 will likely cost $1200+. Will be the most expensive m43 prime so far. f/1.2, AF, metal build, aperture ring, Leica branding does not come cheap. Was looking forward to the Nocticron but if it’s as expensive as many fear, will have to reassess. The 75mm is getting cheaper these days but it’s not a FL I find practical.
Oly should remake all lenses with 45/1.8 style buld quality and price.
Lenses are for photography not for demonstrating how rich people we are.
+1000
Don’t tell Mr. Reeee, who buys a lens only if it’s above 1000 $, weighs over a kilo, is manual and will last the next 1000 yrs. Same concept of a pyramid, shpwing off to everyone 🙂
Amalric, you’re a much smarter guy than many of people would think. 😀
Well, I have a couple of legacy lenses which are like that, but they are more like keepsakes.
Think instead of those who are going to buy an A7 for 2000 $ with the pretext of using legacies at the original focal length.
People are strange 🙂
what about the 35-100 ????
it looks great 🙂
Jawn. just 3 more very expensive and very fast primes of normal lenght. Not a wide angle prime, not a real telephoto prime… Boring/
Some made me laugh when they annouces 2000$ prices…
Of course, it will be not inexpensive, it’s an high-end lens with metal built, two rings, f/1.2, with AF, and stabilizer… Do you think it will be for free? i think it will cost around 1200$. That’s impossible to make lens smaller, it’s f/1.2 guys, lighter than f/1.8 (i’m think about 75/1.8)…
stop complaining… if that’s too expensive for you, don’t buy it, if you find it to big, don”t buy it too… Do like me, get an 45/1.8 it’s an crazy lens very light and small. It’s plastic ok but then? the most important is yours pictures you take with.
Very nice!
no matter what they spec out at, I don’t see how more lens choices in the system is a contentious debate? The trend is that everyone is starting to embrace mFT, from crappy lomo plastic to Optically pure Asian-produced Leitz … we have a myriad of choices people and the “system” is shifting toward “standard” Which of course this should make the competition look back over their shoulders, [those same shoulders sagging under the weight of their kit.]
I think what the M43 platform really needs is more budget lenses. It will attract more customers and lower the overall R&D cost. People with serious money would probably go for FF, M43 is really perfect for entry level and casual shooters.
There are already lots of consumer zooms. The only thing that’s really going to reduce the cost of those lenses are economies of scale, and m43 needs to do a much better job of marketing it’s capabilities and advantages for that to happen.
By inexpensive, I really meant 100 to 200 dollars lens like the Canon 50mm f1.8.
Indeed, the 3 major strategies behind good business are:
1.Marketing
2.Marketing
And
3.Marketing
M4/3 SUCKS at marketing. Pany and Oly had all the time on their hands to promote m4/3 outside Asia, they had a head-start and yet they’re hardly visisble outside Asia. If I were Oly or Pany I would spend half my resources on TV, internet and magazine ads. I think I’ve seen like 2 or 3 advertisements over the past 4 years. But most specifically they need to promote THE SYSTEM, not a single camera model like they have these past years but the m4/3 standard, they need to sell the concept, the technology and the advantages, they need to promote the entire system no matter how marketing un-friendly its name is. They need to go Apple on this sucker and capture everyone’s attention, specially the common folk.
Ultra expensive but why no depth of field scale????
Anybody knows about weather sealing?
I won’t spend more than 1000€ for the nocticron. 15mm is an odd focal lenght to me, I don’t like even 28mm, to tell the truth, so I think I’ll leave the 15mm at the shop, no matter its price.
Admin, I remember Olympus should have a fixed lens m43 camera, am I wrong? Any rumors about it?
(Hope you’ll add some kind of Disquis here..)
These are all lenses that I would like. They have to wait in line.
Som lenses are so expensive that the bodies and mounts to carry them disappear before people have the money to buy them.
That happened to 4/3 and we still laugh about the poor sods, would you like to do the same? 🙂
Lol M43 users are something else. A lot of Pany and Oly hate and no room for critism. Please stop it and just have fun with youre gear.
A 15 is a strange focal size, I wish they had done a real 12.5 and a 50, thus in equivalent 24×36 half of a 50mm and double.
the Oly zoom 12-50 is the best range but the f/stop are really way too small. I would love one zoom 12-50/2.8
It is not a strange focal for street shooting, especially if you consider the squarish form factor of 4/3.
In fact it might go down well for environmental portraits as well.
As for the aperture ring it might help towards hyperfocal focus, and general awareness of the camera settings.
15mm I hope to be the second kit lens of the GM1, but also of an original Leica m4/3 with EVF, the Panny we saw in the Patent.
Oh well, one can dream…
Theres a 35-100 lens in the picture series. Never heard of that one before, and yet there is one right under your eyes. Its small, obviously to complement the 12-32.
You know, I’ve only been here a couple of days and I find some people in here rather odd for two main reasons:
1. Like some others above, I don’t get the civil war between Olympus and Panasonic fans. I use Panasonic lenses on my Olympus cameras without thinking about anything other than I want the focal length and I like the size. Who cares who came out with what when it’s all enriching the same pail?
2. I also own Canon, Pentax and Leica cameras. I certainly have never heard Canon users gripe – and keep griping on and on for line after line! – about how Canon should really give them the f1.2 L lens in an f1.4 package at f1.4 price. It’s really an odd form of self-entitlement.
Nicely put. In addition to native m43 lenses you can use any of the legacy 35mm stuff with adapters, and that makes the format so much more interesting. I have used Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Minolta, Leica and various enlarger lenses on Canon and Pentax bellows, etc. etc. Despite the disdain we have the the inane fanboy bickering that goes on, it is good to see how widespread the interest in m43 has become – the gear may not be sitting on the shelf in your local camera store, as they are still full of dSLRs, but we can all get it if we show a little patience. I just knew there was a great future in m43 MILC when I bought the G1 in October 2008. Now we have quite a mature system with some great cameras (E-P5, E-M1, GX7, GM1, GH3) and a large selection of lenses in the shorter focal lengths. What I’m waiting for are new lenses in longer telephoto. While the legacy glass is good, it is not as good as the new stuff. APS-C MILCS? Sorry Sony and Samsung, but it is Betamax all over again.
That ‘civil war’ is the sad result of some people pledging loyalty to a brand and then having to re-enforce the underdog status of their brand of choice. Its silly indeed.
Also totally agree about this silly entitlement thing, and am still waiting for those know-all people to bring us all those amazingly good, small light and cheap lenses. Its pretty ridiculous.
