New GX7 test roundup and a “mysterious” contest by Damian McGilliCuddy.

Panasonic LUMIX GX7 Shooting Impression by Bernie DeChant

Before to catch up with some GX7 news here is something strange: Damian Mc Gillicuddy (Click here) launched an intriguing competition. You can win “something” that they can’t say what it is. All they can say is the winner needs an up to date passport and ready to travel sometime after 1st September. Open to anyone though we won’t pay air fares for people out of the UK. My guess is that it’s related to the E-M1 launch…

GX7 news:

Giulio Sciorio posted part two of the ongoing GX7 review at SmallcameraBigpicture:

Cutting through the tech jargon, what you get is a cleaner image and more dynamic range at every ISO which is to be expected when you get a next gen camera. Personally I was not expecting this tech to come until we see the GH3MKII but hey I’m not complaining!

Full GX7 review at Pocket-Lint:

The Lumix GX7 is the package deal. It’s bursting with features, it’s a pleasure to use and it produces some excellent shots. Pro-spec features such as a 1/8000th sec maximum shutter speed and that tilt-angle viewfinder further bolster the package deal that, straight of of the box, is unlike anything else out there on the market.

    1. Given that it is quite obvious the winner will be given an E-M1 with the kit lens and an all expenses paid photo safari, I would be quite happy to hang with the McGillicuddy, even he’s not of the Reeks.

    2. LOL…let’s not take things too seriously…I would love to fly to the old country and hang loose with the Big Dawg…if nothing else…it would be VERY entertaining…and maybe I could teach tha dawg a thing or two! 🙂

  1. Dear Admin,

Do you know if the upcoming E-M1 will have 25fps video or 50p?

The problem is that not a single Olympus camera ever released supports the European PAL standard of 25 frames-per-second video. Only the US/Japanese standard of NTSC (30 fps). This makes Olympus cameras completely unusable for serious work such as DVD and TV productions in Europe. When importing 30 fps material in a 25 fps timeline, in editing software, you get dropped frames and it looks awful.

I was hoping that the recently announced E-P5 would finally address the issue, but no, I was dissapointed again. It’s really a pity because the 5-axis sensor stabilisation is the best available on the market and would make Oly cameras perfect for handheld documentary work. Olympus is missing an opportunity to take a market share in European documentary- and video production.

Maybe you can ask Olympus representative why they’re the only camera manufacturer in the world who ignore the European video standard. Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, Blackmagic, etc. all have 25 FPS modes.

    best regards,

    Vincent

  2. Will wait for price drop which come always within a few months after product release with Panasonic…No need to rush with these “not so interesting deal”…Fnac is always more expensive than any competitor on the french market !

  3. Pocket-Lint:
“Whether claims of best-yet and various decibel figures equate to true image quality hikes we’re not so convinced upon inspection. But what matters is what’s on screen (or the page) – and when everything’s been right we’ve seen great images come from the GX7.”

OK, I can already see how pixel-peepers would decimate Panny’s efforts on the sensor development.

Overall, I’m pleased with IQ, though I wish Pocket-Lint has also showed few samples taken with a sharper lens. The IQ of this Panny 14-42 reminds me very much of the original FT Zuiko 14-42: edge-to-edge good, but don’t look at the fine details.

    1. They also mentioned color noise at higher ISO and “lack of defintion” compared to e.g. EP-5, which in my book says that the DR is not up to par. Honestly, that is to be expected, as it’s unlikely that Panasonic can take these big steps in sensor development all of a sudden.

      1. “Honestly, that is to be expected […]”

Sounds rational, but I would delay the judgment until more picture would show up – more pictures taken with better lenses (or: relevant lenses like 14mm, 20mm and 45mm).

That is why I have mentioned the lens used: the softness of a lens at low ISO is just a softness, but at high ISOs it is mixed up with and indistinguishable from sensor noise.

      2. on Dpreview is good test high ISO ,GX7 has smooth noise and still sharper EP5 ,
what about test my eyes ,your eyes and how to judgment

        1. Many people seems like to compare result of OOC jpg’s. When comparing raw can see more detail at all iso’s in gx7 samples.

  4. The lack of IBIS info and tests leaves me a little uneasy. Panasonic highlighted the new sensor over everything else, even gave numbers (10% more …), but the IBIS as a first ever didn’t get much love. Call me a pessimist, but this looks like a sign that the IBIS is not very effective. Couldn’t they have published some number, “under y circumstances, gives you x stops improvement …”

    1. one mention, because you like the site that GX7 is worse look,
but you don’t look the good test on others site ,Damn

    2. Are you a little uneasy? Oh petal, go out and take some Pictures. And use a proper camera, not that puny sensor rubbish.

  5. @Giulio Sciorio

In fact there are some communities that are more focused on the camera sensor than the camera.

Man, you have also fallen to the trap.

That should have read “more focused on the camera sensor than the images it can produce.”

The black body – In the USA we will not be seeing the black GX7 at launch. That does not mean we wont’ see it ever…just not at launch. If having the GX7 is important to you speak up online. You will be heard. This is simply a supply, demand issue here.

Panny still keeps the fine tradition of pissing users off with small man-made quirks and gotchas.

It’s apparently a bit better in Germany. But only a bit. Indications are that black body would be available, but there would be no kits with the black body – only silver one.

Still can’t figure out what the appeal of the silver top…

    1. The GX7 has enough bells and whistles for me. The release date couldn’t come any sooner. I know we’re getting shafted in the states with body options and kits, but I’m just going to slap on the P/L 25mm on it and go!

      Can’t. Wait.

      Mr ALL CAPS

      1. The GX-7 will surely pacify your mind (hopefully on time!). As even Oly fanboys will admit it’s a nice camera (when pressured enough, of course), so you’re good.

As a side note: I think “all-caps” (lowercase letters) is better (because of the twist), but most of all I’m happy you’re no longer anonymous!

    2. Amazon/UK has every combination of body colors and kit lenses available for preorder, so I doubt Germany or any other European market will be different, though the admittedly it looks like the camera is not yet listed at Amazon/DE.

  6. More reviews for GX7 needed , perhaps DP’s review ( once’s done ) will have what I want to know about GX7 .
    Raw & DR comparison between GX1 .

  7. Not single one of these blog sites has done a meaningful, controlled comparison with other cameras, using final firmware. ANY conclusions about IQ based on the crap that passes for testing by these clowns are meaningless.

They compare a JPEG shot on pre-release firmware, taken at one time under one set of lighting conditions against another shot taken on a different day under different lighting conditions, and call it meaningful. The compare a jpeg from one camera with that from another without making any effort to normalize NR and sharpening settings, and call it meaningful.

    What a joke!

      1. what the result ,on raw i download and see full size high ISO GX7 better than E-P5
what about your eyes ,don’t look at dpr’s capture it’s tiny can’t see all detail,
if you can’t see check your eyes to Clinic

      2. Anonymous is merely a problem for you because it makes it more difficult to shoot the messenger instead of the message.

  8. Giulio’s “test” reads like a Panasonic marketing brochure. If there are any bloggers we should take with a huge grain of salt, it’s those who are in the manufacturers’ pockets, like Giulio, Wong, and Pekka.

    1. No need to post here that you think the Canon 5Dmk3 is for losers and Asian girls. Go ahead and post that in the relevant Canon forums.

  9. It’ll be great when cameras have like 50 stops of DR. No, not because of all that luscious detail recovery. It’s so that nobody will moan about DR anymore.

  10. If it was to Japan with even a slither of a chance to shoot a Geisha behind closed doors, I would be in. I have captured many an image of them moving around in Kyoto and Kanazawa, but never behind doors. Damn lucky guy in the GX7 videos from panasonic.

    1. I also feel more and more obsessed with Asian girls. Must be the small-bodied, tiny sensor cameras I’ve been shooting with recently, darn.

  11. The contest is to be the exclusive photographer for the signing of Olympus over to Sony, followed by the seppoku of the Olympus board of directors.

  12. I didn’t see the footage by Bernie DeChant with GX7, but a videographer with unknown camera shooting Bernie was excellent – right position and framing – I liked this work so much.
