      1. …but Olympus would sell a plastic hood for that amount!…..well..$40 anyway….I really like the Pany/Leica 45/2.8 macro…and the Oly 45mm f/1.8 that I own…the autofocus is nice too….but I know a lens like this will have a certain .,,”look” and a following!

    1. +1 Everyone seemed to be expecting the 42.5mm to be in the $1200 range, so $999 is great.

Voigtländer may be using similar components for a number of lenses to share… 25mm and 75mm f1.8 (M mount) both use 52mm filters and are a similar size, while the 17.5mm and 42.5mm are both 58mm. Maybe this is lowering production costs a bit.

      1. Also lenses at around 42mm are much easier to make with excellent performance and speed, so it can be cheaper. People expect it to be more just because the equivalent FL is 85mm and a real 85mm lens is much harder to make speed and good.

  1. I think this 42.5mm might therefore be the best lens from CV for M43. And it can seriously challenge the Olympus 75mm for portraits, given its 0.95 speed (and bokeh), 10 blades, and its less restrictive FL. Too bad you have to focus manually.

      1. looking at the price of the Nikon 1 32mm f/1.2, i have a feeling that the Panasonic might be same price as the Voigtlaender or even a bit cheaper.

        1. I will jump for joy if it is. I’m hoping $1200 or under for the 42/1.2, which will likely result in an immediate pre-order for me.

    1. …for portraits? Yes, perhaps for very “artistic” portraits. For *normal* portraits, an aperture of 0.95 is not that important: e.g the Oly 45/1.8 needs to be stepped down to some f=2.8 in order to have both the eyes and the nose tip simultaneously in reasonable focus. At 0.95, it may be difficult to get both the pupils and the eyelashes in focus…

      1. I never found it a problem if only one eye is in focus. Okay you can exaggerate, by doing a close portrait. But portrait is more then a head shot. For half body and full body portraits, 0.95 is a very welcome option.

      2. Just because the aperture can open to f0.95, doesn’t mean you have to use it at f0.95. Just turn the aperture ring! What a concept!

I use my Voigtländer 25mm night and day and never hesitate to use smaller apertures. It’s a pretty amazing lens. I would suspect the 42.5mm to be even better.

  2. I’m looking forward to this lens. I’ve been patient, not jumping to the recent re-release of their 50 1.5, which has received high praise. Hope to see samples soon.

      1. Pete, two weeks ago I was at a concert taking photos, and tried again a NEX 7 + Leica Summilux 75mm: I had again the confirmation that focus p. is too distracting.
I prefer the “old” magnified mode.

    1. too bad he mostly shows closeup shots. At that range even a slow lens gives similar effect,as can be seen when he shows the stopped down shots.

      1. The lens has a minimum focus distance of only 9″ (.23m)!
That’s fantastic for that sort of focal length! One could get near-macro close-up shots without needing a macro lens. That’s very cool, indeed!

The new holy trinity of classic length M4/3 lenses is finally here!!! 😉
        17.5mm, 25mm and now the 42.5mm!
        Now for a 10mm or 12mm f0.95!

        1. I don’t think a 10 mm f 0.95 woul be technically possible (Tegea 9.8 mm was 1.8 and a monster of a lens) but yes: a faster short lens would be the “hail mary” to the trinity. But I doubt we will see it as there are not too many people who would spend that amount of money for a lens that is needed only for special situations when the 17.5 is not wide enough.

  3. I cannot tell from the Tiger Direct page if that E-p3 kit comes with the VF-1 optical viewfinder or not. It shows in the pictures, but I see no mention of it. I don’t even know the price anyway since it’s still out of stock :/

  4. Have it since Tuesday (someone has already posted the link to my first “test” – see above). If you have the budget and are in love with lenses that are old-school it’s a perfect buy. Will walk around my city this night and try to get some more shots.

About the odd “focus peaking” discussion: In dark surroundings I would very, very much love to have it so one would not need to care so much about focus and concentrate more on composition and/or being fast enough to get a shot in a documentary situation. It’s out of the question that we can get well focused shots otherwise (remember measure tape, for instance) but peaking helps you to know much quicker where you are and where you may want to go to focus-wise.

Apart from that fast lenses teach us also to become more humble and respect the incredible work of professional focus pullers in film/video much more. Probably the most under-rated job in the business.
