Does the code work for upgrade to LR5?
The coupon code does not work for the upgrade version; I just tried, and got a message reading “Sorry! We can’t apply this coupon. Please re-enter code.”
Thanks you just saved me a bit of time.
It won’t work on the student version either — now that would have been a deal!
There are plenty of great alternatives to lightroom. Better to give your money to one of them rather than Adobe…wont be long til they try and extort a monthly tax for access to your files in lightroom too.
With the same feature set?
In ONE application?
Name them.
I wanna say Aperture. But sadly they have fallen a bit behind lately… as Aperture 4 is still AWOL.
Then again… the interface is just so much better and more consistent as is the browser.
I just hate that I don’t have an ‘Events’ or ‘Folders’ overview in LR.
I hate how LR slightly zooms into an image if you double click it to go back to the browser… because it thinks you want to just zoom it… at first.
And worst of all… I have to change from the Library Module to the Develop Module… although I have only one image showing? Why doesn’t it just give me the controls in the first place if I am only looking at ONE image…
End of rant 😀
Don’t be put off by a lack of 4.0 in Aperture. The 3.4 upgrade was significant and because it wasn’t designated a 4, Apple didn’t ask for a payment. Forget about the version numbers when considering the features.
Ahh I know. Why would I be put off 😀
It is still better then LR.
It just lacks a few nice features, plus I had that weird problem with WAY oversaturated reds in E-M5 Raws… that could not easily be corrected by sliders alone.
So no worries 😀
Doubtless, Adobe blows!
Ever since they started screwing Mac users by releasing feature poor Mac versions of their applications AND killing off Freehand, I’ve upgraded only when absolutely necessary. If this idiotic cloud rental BS holds, it looks like CS6 will be the end of Adobe for me. Except for Lightroom. If they go all cloudy on that, I’m gone.
I don’t do much post-editing… a little exposure tweaking, sharpening and noise reduction maybe… I prefer the way I can store my images anywhere I like and in whatever folders I want (dated and named by photo session), not in hidden folders. Unless something has changed, Aperture’s iPhoto-like bloated, inscrutable database approach leaves me cold.
“Unless something has changed, Aperture’s iPhoto-like bloated, inscrutable database approach leaves me cold.”
Nope… hasn’t changed one bit 😀
That is what EYE personally like though. Messing with folders myself and stuff… is so… windowsy 😀
Plus… technically the Events and Events-Gallery are like folders… just that they directly show you the content. Other than that… completely drag and droppable in themselves…
Anyhow… there’s plenty of alternatives for all the tastes…
The same feature set. That’s not relevant. As each program has a feature set that varies a little or a lot and functions differ.
Lightroom may on the surface seem a good feature set but that is only to a lightroom user.
I dumped the annual subscriptions to Adobe a couple of years ago. Thank goodness. I trialled many packages and discovered ACDSee pro6 and Topaz (especially their Clarity). No way in a pink fit will I go back to Adobe. Their feature set does very little for me and their methodology of management even less. I reject their hand in my pocket twice a year for LR and Elements.
Full featured: ACDSee, AfterShot Pro, Aperture, DarkTable
For plain raw old converters – DXO Optic Pro, RAW Therapee, or Silky Pix
I can see by your past posts that you will be pedantic and point out some obtuse feature that LR has which the others don’t. It works both ways though.
I really like Capture One. It isn’t the cheapest, but if you do a trial, they will send you a few interesting offers. It gives me the best results for my XZ-1 raw files.
As much as I despise Adobe for their recent decision, I will continue to use the astounding Lightroom. Once it becomes Creative Cloud Lightroom and my version will not work on future cameras, then I am gone.
The new tax/rental/landlord approach of Adobe, for me means that Cs6 is my last purchase of Adobe, (and 6 didn’t really improve on 5) updates for monetary sake vs actual improvement … I’ve always found Lr bloated and slow when compared to Adobe Camera Raw and I hope 3rd party makers start supporting ACR’s advantage as a plug-in. But who knows how long the ACR plug-in will be available now that the cloud has set in. Two most useful tool sets for me in Ps are ACR and NIK both are plug-ins, so I am happy to migrate to a “shell” to house these, don’t need the cloud’s bad weather blues.
DXO has a plugin framework – would be great to see it opened up to third party plugins!
I recently tried LR5 and Silkypix 5. I ended up buying the special offered upgrade of Silkypix (from Panasonic Version). The developing process with self-defined-presets was much faster for larger amounts of pictures, especially the sharpening/NR-presets for every ISO-setting. The auto-light-adjust in LR5 was always way too dark. Also WB-adjustment and color-adjustment worked better for me. Over all I got much better results with Silkypix. I only miss the possibility to hide the control panels with a short-cut and the different markers.
