I’m partly with you on that and its interested to see how many of the selfie crowd will actually get this. Though I know a lot of cellphone snappers who are dissatisfied with the quality of their selfie photos especially in low light so a APS-C camera that can do selfies is a huge upgrade for them IQ wise.
I own both a rebel and the older Fuji XA1 and I notice that the Fuji seem to create smoother more flattering skin tones out of the box. I personally don’t like it because it looks a bit soft compared to the Canon but I can see how this look can appeal to the selfie lovers.
Plus my XA1 has some other advantages over the Canon rebels such wifi for quick phone to facebook transfer and a great jpegs engine with very good film simulations (for the Instagram crowd).
I’m not sure if a viewfinder will appeal to its target market. I’ve seen people who are used to cellphone cameras tend to compose with the back of the LCD display of their newly bought Canon/Nikon DSLR all the time. Silly I know.
Now that Lumix GF7 is about to be released, this camera does not justify its existence, GF7 is better built, smaller and cheaper and has all the same “selfie” features with just a smaller sensor, but also a much smaller lens. I will not compare image quality, because there Fuji wins, but girls with pink handbags don’t care about detail of every hair and wrinkle… so not really hitting the target audience.
I said it before and I will say it again: this should have been a cheap simple camera for photo enthusiast that will get them into Fuji lens line up. The kind you buy your kid to learn photography on budget, the one that looks like pro but isn’t really, this should have been Fuji’s answer to Olympus Pen, it is in the same price category for god sake.
Currently looking for a 2nd, back up body, and instead of getting new cheap camera I am forced to considering old used Xe1 or Xm1. Yes I loved Xm1 a year ago when tested, but it is old now, just like my Xpro1. I really hope Xm2 will be what I am looking for as back up until Xpro2 comes out.

My gut reaction is, that the people this is marketed to tend to just use their phones instead.
Fuji should stick to their pro line which has been pretty damn successful. (Very much looking forward to the X-Pro2)
Plus without the EVF, not sure what it does that’s better than a canon rebel, except look marginally better, but not with that giant, unbalanced zoom.
It’s quite a bit smaller and better looking, probably 2 big factors for the market they are aiming at.

Great camera for selfies and pics of your food for Facebook 🙂
The features are great, but the camera is quite large to be targeting a demographic of people who just want selfies and instafood pics.
