Fujifilm X100T: “Worth to upgrade from X100S? YES!” (POLL) + street photography vision & tips by Bert Stephani (VIDEO)

1) Bert Stephani posted his Fujifilm X100T review at youtube and recommends the upgrade from the Fujifilm X100S. But it’s more than “just” a review. Bert also shares his vision/style in street photography and gives you a tip about how to approach a stranger asking for a portrait. Pretty cool to see him dealing with his subjects and the tricks he uses to get a natural, spontaneous shot of them… and don’t forget the  Instax SHARE Printer SP-1 in your bag. Definitely worth to check it out here on youtube!

2) We have another one, who thinks that it’s worth to sell the Fujifilm X100S and get the X100T. “Is the X100T Worth the Upgrade Over the X100S? The short answer: Yes.” For the longer answer check out studiobaiocchi

3) The love story continues (and the high ratings too). “Fall in love with photography all over again” X100T review at trustedreviews

  1. I’ll wait for a new X100s firmware that’ll hopefully close the gap between the X100s and X100t.
    Prices are too low on Ebay for X100s. I don’t want to sell mine for 600$ and buy a new X100t for twice the price.
    It looks like a great time to buy a used X100s though.

    1. Yes, it’s perfect time to buy X100S. I’ve got one sweet-ass 1 month old for $800. X100T improvements aren’t really worth 50% higher price tag especially considering that lens, sensor and processor are all the same.

  2. If you already have the X100S, it isn’t worth the upgrade to X100T, in my opinion. But if X100T is your first X-Trans camera, or you already have a system X camera (X-E, X-T, X-Pro) and need a second camera for street, travel, a camera with a fixed lens and great performance, yes it isn’t worth to buy the X100S for a minor discount, just go full speed to the new X100T.

  3. Ever heard of “post-purchase justification”? It’s a marketing term that describes the cognitive trap we all fall into when buying new stuff – especially when we’ve spent a lot of money on it.

    It’s that same trap which gives rise to all these “why I love my camera” posts, as well as the reviews here. Take them with the pinch of salt they deserve.

  4. The X100T has faster AF, direct D-Pad control for focus point and face detection AF. That is for me a good reason for an update.

    Everybody has different priotities. For this is important.

    1. Well, the AF is only faster due to changes in the logarithm, so that could be added to X100s firmware easily. But even if not, the difference seems to be quite small, as Fuji doesn’t even advertise it, and most reviewers don’t seem to bother to highlight it in their conclusions.
      Not sure if it’s worth an upgrade, as AF speed will still be levels below that of best-of-class cameras.
      Face Detection AF – if it’s essential for you, then you probably have to upgrade. Most reviewers seem to be more excited about improved manual focus, though. I personally missed face detection on any of my cameras.

      1. I would agree, I have an X100s, and I won’t upgrade (especially as I mainly use the EVF, so the HVF upgrade doesn’t excite me too much.

        Not that I’m saying the update isn’t good. If I was buying the camera now, I’m sure I would appreciate it. It just seems like it’s a line which will be updated quite regularly, so I’ll probably wait for the X100u in 2015 or 2016 unless the X100s breaks.

      2. Yeah I compared both cameras and the AF seems slightly faster in the X100T in low light. In normal light I could not tell the difference in AF speed.

  5. “Fall in love with photography all over again” good god what drivel. overpriced camera, antiquated sensor and focusing speed, great lens, great leaf shutter. if you’ve got a 100s and want an upgrade then since you’re not invested in lenses (since you can’t take it with your upgrade) a better upgrade path would be to pick up a Sony A7*, they can be had for the same price, still mirrorless, still small and light, but with twice the sensor resolution and a full frame sensor. If all you want is to fall in love then stick with fuji, but if you want an actual camera upgrade look elsewhere. Sure, you’ll have to suffer the shutter release button not being right under your finger, but is that really such a hardship 🙂

    These kinds of drivel self-justifying blog posts are so far removed from photography, they are feel-good ads, nothing more. Do I love the look of the fuji, sure, does it compete today with full frame similar sized cameras, no. simple as that. At $399 maybe I’d get one, but it’s just going to appear to the older guys who like to twiddle with knobs

    1. Dear Hnriot

      “… so far removed from photography…” for someone deep into photography you seem to have plenty of time on your hands to type all these anti-fuji, anti-APSC, anti-whatever long rants.

      Just sayin’

      1. I stand by my theory that Sony are paying trolls to come on here, and I’ve seen similar stuff on Canon rumours as well.

        1. I don’t agree.
          As a X-E1 owner, I follow mirrorlessrumors, fujirumors and sonyalpharumors.
          In my opinion, Sony rumors are more promising than Fuji and X100T is a great camera for sure, but too expensive ! I’d rather buy an discounted or used X100S than new overpriced X100T…

          1. Sony has better rumours? That would be great if I could photograph a wedding with a rumour I guess.

          2. I don’t want to buy lenses for a specific system with critical problems (RAW conversion, AF speed) and slow progression…
            => No money for Fuji…
            => Less money for R&D
            => Slower progression
            Vicious circle…

    2. they fixed the button on the A7II 😉 looks actually pretty good, i’ll wait to see what Fuji brings us early next year (if anything)

    3. “These kinds of drivel self-justifying blog posts are so far removed from photography”

      I wonder how far removed you are from photography – my guess would be pretty far, for you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. You can prove me otherwise, show us your portfolio/photos, otherwise it’s pretty clear you’re a gearhead, a couch photographer.

      The X100T is fixed focal length camera, catering to the 35mm crowd: PJ, travelers, portait photographers (who know how to handle wide angle). To get the equivalent FoV you will have to add the 35mm F/2.8 lens to your A7 for $700 extra. So you’ll pay about $800 more for the Sony equivalent, with no real benefit. You get F/2.8 vs F/2 so you lose that 1 stop full frame advantage (in terms of low-light and DoF as well). Twice the resolution?? 24 has about 22% more linear resolution.

      1. I like the X100 a lot, but I’ll point something out here: F/2.8 on a full frame has more background blur than F/2.0 on the X100’s crop sensor. The X100’s light collecting ability and ability to make 35mm-equiv background is relatively F/3.0 on FF (2.0 X 1.5 crop factor).

        And with the Sony, you can get an adapter and use many cheap, high quality manual focus lenses.

        The X100(T) has more advantages than that. But, if you want to talk lenses, the A7 has the advantage.

        And 35mm compatible F/2.0 and larger, are easily had. An old Nikon F/1.2 manual focus lens is about $500, and the focus peaking will work fine. Just depends on what you want.

    4. Tried a Sony camera. Hideous thing, ergonomically stunted. Photographically speaking, the Sony camera line makes you want to take photographs… on your iPhone.

      Why would you actively choose a camera that is so antagonistic toward the process of picture taking? I mean that quite seriously. Is it the sign of a diseased or disordered mind, or do you just like the idea of photography, but hate taking pictures?

      Keen minds want to know. Actually, keen minds couldn’t give a crap/

  6. Cool video Bert, Holland must be a very free place. here where I live you cannot take random pictures of children, it is against the law. Of course I understand the situation here is different and they are handed the photos back immediately.

  7. Upgrade? No, I am a happy camper with my X100s. However, I might pick up an X100T to turn my X100s into X100b, where “b” stands for “backup”. If some serious project relies on that leaf shutter, I’d better have a backup!… Right now it’s an “old” X100, so I can wait for the dust to settle and for the early adopters to stop convulsing.

    1. I’m glad Fujifilm fixed the broken aperture interface: never should they have split aperture functionality between lens and rear dial. Someday, maybe, they will release T and B modes from the exposure dial, place them onto the ON/OFF switch, and use the extra space on the exposure dial to implement half or third stops.

      There are too many interface breaks that still need to be fixed, but the T looks to be a good step in the right direction. And yes, the leaf shutter is damn important.
