Gotta say … that’s an impressive list of additions to the X-Pro 1, regardless of how useable they are for most shooters.
Nice to see continued commitment to older [but still relevant] models.
I guess you are wrong. X-Pro1 will only get feature no. 4. No classic chrome, that is…
I think that was a sarcasm)
Seems to me the only feature that will be coming to the X-E1 and X-Pro1 will be the AF+MF functionality. Am I reading that wrong?
Looks like there are no other additional features 🙁
That’s very disappointing. I can’t imagine adding Classic Chrome would’ve been terribly difficult…or even the interval timer.
X-T1 (an excellent camera already with new tech inside) gets 21 new important features and X-Pro1 (the ex-flagship) gets only 1, that most users will not even feel it?
Wait for X-Pro2. All hybrid viewfinder models could be updated with the announcement. Nevertheless even Fuji’s Kaizen philosophy has it’s limits. They are better than others with the existence of the updates at all. Don’t ask too much.
Well, I could live without the Classic Chrome, but a more realistic battery indicator, Exposure Compensation working on all Programs and some minor tweaks in AF or button configuration is not something beyond the technical limitations of the X-Pro1.
Classic chrome is quite limited as it’s designed for X-Trans II. It’s big job to develop a film simulation mode for a sensor. It looks like Fuji has decided such efforts are not worth it. And don’t hurry up with EC. I hope it’s present in X-T1 update even though it’s not in the list. It could be corrected as hidden bug. So you can’t be sure X-Pro1 won’t get this feature until update will be out.
Well, I guess we just have to wait and see. And hope never dies, right? It’s not that I’m not happy with my X-Pro1 – I just love it. It’s shape, size, weight – just perfect. In December it will be one year since I enjoy this marvelous camera. But I was expecting a little more from it, since it’s name is “Pro” and used to be the company’s flagship.
Not if you own an X-Pro1!
I understand the same from the official page. For x-e1 only one feature: AF+MF
nothing about classic chrome as indicated before here like rumor
Would love Classic Chrome for the old X100! Not expecting it though since it’s received a lot of love from Fuji in the past.
BTW, there is also a minor update for the X30. It´s already available: http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/x30/
Got my hopes up when I saw the post about interval shooting for the X-Pro1 but it seems that’s a no-go. :/
No updates for x100s???
They say “buy the X100T, that´s the new firmware”.
This is exactly how it feels. Hardware changes in X100T are minimal and marginal. There is no technical reason not to have the firmware backported, only political ones.
The X100T just came out with all the new features. They usually wait a few months after a new camera comes out before they bring the new firmware features to the predecessor. So I guess there’ll be an update for the X100s in spring or summer 2015
Tethered shooting. Holy moly, that is awesome news.
Wait, PC only?! You’ve got to be kidding.
I LOVE YOU FUJI
For those lamenting the lack of Classic Chrome, it showed up as an optional Camera Profile in Lightroom for my X-T1 after upgrading to Lightroom 5.7. Perhaps this applies to the X100xs/X100/X-Pro1 as well ? Could someone check this out ?
No, no Classic Chrome for old models like X-E2 in Lightroom currently.
It´s not available for older models – but that´s no problem, it can be also done with some desaturation, contrast addition and WB work
Yeah I can’t see it on my X100 RAF files. Not getting it mixed up with Monochrome?
Sigh, OSX tethering please.
Maybe it works with Parallels:
http://www.parallels.com/eu/products/desktop/
The below is necessary only because the lenses rely on fully electronic focusing circuits. Pressure focus motors, or simple helicoids would allow instant manual override anytime. This is the problem with removing hardwired functionality.
“4. AF+MF function enables seamless manual focusing. After half pressing the shutter to autofocus on the subject, fine adjustment can then be made using the manual focus ring”
I was expecting some new features for my X-Pro1. If I’m reading this correctly, one feature only will get an improvement (that most users can live without it anyway) and some other vital functions were left unseen. Disappointed?!?! I guess hope never dies. Let’s presume this isn’t their final word on that.
Why does Fuji have the most restricted Auto Exposure Bracketing of any Camera Brand? 3 exposires. One stop apart. Is there a way to get Fuji to fix this?
Agreed! Why in the world they limit an easily programmed option!
A lot of cool new features in this update. Good work Fuji. And yet I would trade all of them for these 2: an exposure bracketing expansion to 2 or 3ev, and a fix to the remote app to actually do exposure bracketing instead of just single shot (it ignores the wheel position).
I like Fuji to support pro photographers.I will order another XT 1
If you’re a Pro, you should order the X-Pro1. Why else they put the name Pro in the name?
:-))) well, for example my initials are TT – and logically that´s why I have two X-T1. And it looks that it was a right choice…
That is a question you should ask to Fuji not to another reader.
Clearly according to Fuji the current X-Pro is less ‘pro’ then the X-T1.
The XPro is still top of the line model for Fuji. Please come back here when the XPRO2 comes out.
Ok I have to write this.
If you have the X-pro 1 you think you can be pro photographer?
I won Nikon D3x D4 but now i work with XT-1 because i like how
and what fuji does
It make sense to me dont you think sow
I did. I bought 2
Hahaha sucks if you’re an X-Pro 1 user, paid all that money for an unfinished beta test product.
Don’t know about the others, but I paid for an amazing camera that changed my life 3 years ago, worth every penny, or would you consider people that bought the first Bugatti unlucky because the new Bugatti has so many more “features”???? Without Xpro1 and the feedback from people using it, there would never be an Xt1 or Xe2…
Haha, I guess you know exactly what you are talking about since you have seen an X-Pro1 once in a show case at your local camera store.
I went to buy an XT1, walked out with an XPro. Ever tried one?
So, the PRO is less PRO than the regular camera?
It shouldn’t be any surprise to you that the X-T1 is the ‘pro’ over the original Fuji-X Pro.
Better handling is what real professional photographers prefer over a camera body that is named ‘pro’.
Times move on. But there will be an X-PRO2 along soon to take the crown again…
If Fuji could update the camera names too, they’d probably called it X-Pro0.5 when the 16MP sensor came out 😛
(I mean the updated X-Trans II sensor)
Why do they still sell X-Pro1?
It’s the only hybrid viewfinder interchangeable lens model. But it won’t last for long. The X-Pro2 is coming.
But with the current technology advancements, I have a strong feeling that the X-Pro 2 won´t be rangefinder-styled. With the actual EVF quality made by Fuji there is simply no need for a hybrid viewfinder, and a X-T1 styled body would be much more pleasing for professionals to drop their DSLR gear. I really worry about the hybrid viewfinder in Fuji´s MILC cameras, nostalgy may be not enough when it comes to counting the profits.
I hope you’re wrong. Hybrid ViewFinder (HVF) is Fuji’s unique feature. Top cameras are always the “action” ones. OVF is very welcomed feature when subject is moving fast. Thus Fuji has to implement it to the top model. I’d love X-Pro2 to have HVF with ERF (electronic rangefinder). I imagine the best OVF to have at least three magnifications with the widest 24mm eqiv to support coming fast 16/1.4 lens. Others magnifications could be 50eq for 35 and 56 lenses and 135 eq for coming 90/2 and 50-140/2.8. It’d be also great if X-Pro1 would carry PDAF all over the frame. Faster predictive af algorithms and vertical grip are also welcome. Full shutter range has to be available from “T” position so one could control shutter using only dials in order to make vertical grip fully operable. Lot’s of customizable buttons, direct iso control, and weather sealing is necessary. Add rumored tilt screen and you are done. Well that’s just my imagination but this is what I expect when I hear the words “worth to wait”).
Don’t worry, there are plenty of people waiting for a new HVF X-Pro2 and Fuji knows it.
There are plenty of DSRL-Style bodys around but the only other OVF MILC has a red dot and the price of a small car.
So the XPRo 2 should be styled the same as the XT1? Good god PLEASE NO!
I´m surely not appreciating this possibility, but it would be logical when you think like a marketing manager.
Indeed yes. The X-Pro1 started merely as a prototype-kind of Leica M9-killer. Now it’s a more or less first series debugged version – having with this MF/AF thing finally about the same feature-set as any entry level APS/C DSLR (though I’m still missing some settings you’d likely find in those). Once again I hope my camera doesn’t lock-up anymore as it still does in the middle of a situation they might kill you if you don’t make that shot. At its start back in 2012, the ‘Pro’ in the X-Pro1-label could only be intended for joking. Yes, there has always been some joy in using it, most of all that hybrid viewvinder was a compelling novelty. But unfortunately Fuji missed a golden opportunity by releasing this X-series way too soon – the X-T1-kind of quality should have been the standard from day one.
You know what? All X-T1 owners just thought: “THAT IS FREAKING AWESOME!”. Fn lock, instant MF override, direct macro… That’s a really great surprise! We were expecting only published 10 updates.
I also expect some of the features are not present it the list. For example exposure compensation biasing auto iso in manual exposure mode. This feature is present in all new cameras and it has to be present in X-T1GS. If so it has to take no effort to add it to X-T1. It could be considered as old bug.
Even if one wanted expansion of bracketing limits or anything else that’s not present in these updates he has to admit: Fuji adds lot’s of great features for free and this is adorable.
Now all other X-owners. Yes we all thought it would be much better. But even Fuji’s kaizen philosophy has its limits. Also it looks like some of the features that were added to X-T1 are incompatible with other models due to hardware issues. For example its clear that classic chrome is a film simulation mode designed for X-Trans II. All X-Trans(1) models are incompatible with it. Fuji would have had to design completely new preset to support older sensor. It looks like they have decided efforts are not worth it. Also who need lot’s of new fn button functions if there is only one or two of these buttons on the body (and no direct iso button=))? Nevertheless hope dies at last. So I hope Fuji has something it it’s sleeve. For example i still hope for X100s updates, including classic chrome and auto iso in manual mode via EC dial. They could just release it with next X100T updates.
And the last thing. With these features and all hardware features we can imagine the X-Pro2 can become the freaking fantastic camera. I’m looking forward reading rumors from Patrick.
This. EC in manual Aperture, manual Shutter Speed
And more intelligent auto-exposure. Ability to set minimum shutter speed to 1/focal length, 1/(focal length) +/- 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 stops. That’ll be total King.
And only 1 stop in bracketing is totally not enough.
These should all be easy to implement. I don’t get why they rather do the other ones which are much more complicated…e super easy to implemen
I think EC in manual with auto iso on is included. I’ts just not on the list. All new cameras do that. X30, x100t. X-t1gs has it too for sure. Thus I hope x-t1 will get it in order to the same as GS version except for the color. It’s just like an old bug that’s not on the list. Don’t know about older models. We’ll see.
Intelligent auto iso would be great, but if they give us ec in manual as we asked for at least two years, in a time we probably get intelligent auto iso too. Bracketing? That’s a hard one. I don’t know why, but it’s still on the top of the wish list. It looks like fuji is keeping this one to grand it little bit later so the kaizen could be more powerful. Just like these coming updates. But you know what? I’m used to the lack of it. I use wi-fi remote in manual. Of coarse, real bracketing and fast shutter drive is preferable but I can still live without it.
Love it!! My XE2 gets everything i will ever need!! INTERVAL TIMER SHOOTING!! Fuckin awesome! Enhanced Wireles function… finally!! THAN
Instant MF override: I’ve been waiting for this for 2 years now. I never hoped that this would become true, since haven’t seen any discussion about it at all. What a great surprise.
Do you mean AF+MF? It’s a great feature, but afaik it won’t work with the 14mm and 23mm because the focus ring is blocked in AF mode : /
I just hope that Fuji regrets the manual AF/MF switch and won’t add it to the upcoming primes (16mm and 90mm)
Good point, but personally i’d rather have the MF feature on every new prime than any electronic override. Much less likely to happen accidentally, and full stops on both ends.
The perfect solution would be a switch that gives you that behaviour in the MF position but doesn’t block the focus ring in AF mode so the AF+MF feature would work, too. I think that should be possible
I totally agree. But I don’t own any lens with the clutch mechanism, so it won’t affect me personally. Although the 14mm would be very welcome addition to my set of lenses. Well, I think I’d rather use the AF+MF when photographing people at shallow DOF. So this wouldn’t really apply to the 14mm anyway.
But for someone using the 23mm wide open, it’s certainly an issue.
aki, the autofocus overide has essentially been a feature of the 14
and 23mm lenses already, so the upgrade naturally wouldn’t apply to any
lens with the manual focus clutch. Perhaps you don’t own either lens.
All you do is focus automatically, then just pull the focusing ring
towards you and fine focus. You get exactly the same results, which
maybe takes 1/10 second longer than with the firmware upgrade. And if you wish to lock the focus point, just push the focus ring away from you. Simple. I own
both the 14 and 23mm lenses (they are wonderful to shoot with). And for
the record, I’m very happy with the upgrades that Fuji has given to the
X-E2. Coming from the Nikon world, this treatment of customers is like
night and day.
Oops, I wrote too quickly aki. In fact, the 14 and 23mm lenses will focus exactly where the focusing scale is positioned when activating the manual clutch. So I was wrong, these lenses do not provide the same action as the firmware upgrade.
Sorry.
Carry on.
Can’t see why some software features couldn’t be added to older models.
Q. Menu customization would have been nice for the X-E2.
In order to get you to buy an X-T1 – if you want the features enough you’ll buy it; they know that. I say fair enough. They’ve got to sell more cameras if we want the line to continue.
Great updates for the X-T1… But I was hoping for some for my X100S as well… Maybe still coming?
That’s a lot of improvements. It’s the way to go Fuji. I’m looking forward to using the remote control with my XE2. Thank you Santa Fuji. 😀
Still, some popular entries of the ultimate kaizen firmware update poll are not addressed. Bracketing range, minimum shutter speed, exposure compensation in Tav mode, and others… A bit of additional kaizen will be required for 3.1 😉
Will the “High-speed electronic shutter” function only be available on the X-T1 Silver edition?
Because there is a comment at the bottom: “This functionality has been installed on the X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition.”
It will come for the old X-T1 also.
That means it is already there. It will come to the black one with the update.
Ok thx! 😉
For those who has a personal connection with Fuji: It would be great if Fuji could say how much of their camera firmware (for example between X-E2 and X-T1) is common code.
Fuji is better than others (at least better than Nikon based on my 4 years with a Nikon D90), but it would be interesting to know if releasing less updates to older products has technical reasons or is pure market segmentation. After all, Windows 10 will run the same binaries on an Intel Core i3, i5, i7, AMD CPUs and even 8 year old Q6600 beyond the device drivers that abstract the hardware. The same approach on a camera would be revolutionary if done right.
The D90 wasn’t a real winner, I admit, As the most advanced amateur model, it was released in the shadow zone of the pro-strategy change withing Nikon – the force field between the D300 APS/C and the D700 FF aiming for the top of the pro-segment. But claiming that Fuji is finally better now than Nikon… certainly not the pro range of the last years, not at all – some people are really taking their dreams for real. The updates are more damage control than really a service, read my post below, it made the X-Pro1 evolve from a prototype status to a more or less functional concept. Whether this is the way we users want to go…and whether we should put this kaizen so much in the spotlights…? Since the D70 none of the Nikons required this kind of offensive update strategy because the FW was designed to work first time right. Yes there have been glitches but I have never seen a Nikon with a non-functional AF, not working flashes or locking up all the time. Nevertheless, my biggest worry is not even the X-cameras. Also the lenses seem to be very prone to FW-updates. Not so sure what that means for their true investment value. I’m afraid there isn’t. Rebuy, rebuy, rebuy seems to be the only thing where Fuji cares for – over two tp five years, every Fuji owner has just a bag of all new stuff. And that would make this MLIC-stuff far more expensive than ANY pro-DSLR solution.
But Microsoft only do the software, so clearly they need to get it running on as many boxes as possible to sell units. Of course they add a bit of extra bloat in there to give the hardware manufacturers a better opportunity to sell more hardware 😉 Fuji do the hardware and the software, that are inextricably linked.
That’s because all those processors share a common architecture and instruction set.
Within that you will find that although Windows 10 runs on all those CPUs not all of it’s features are available on all CPUs and Motherboards. Some features require new hardware features to run.
Older cameras will have older chips in them that might be slower, they might have less bandwidth available on the chipset or smaller buffers etc. This will mean that some of the new features such as electronic shutter or focus modes in live view might well be possible to do but might be very slow or cause lock-ups etc. In those circumstances they probably choose not to implement them.
Certainly I imagine some features they don’t implement simply to differentiate models, but also economically if you have a camera that sold half a million units and another that sold less than 100k (making these figures up) and only enough money to do new features for one, which do you choose as a business?
I think at this point, Fujifilm should release x-pro1 firmware as open-source – maybe not entirely, but only some parts – to allow users to customize it. Less effort for them, more opportunities for users. It ‘s clear that x-pro1 has reached end of life and of course Fujifilm reduces the efforts to develop new functionality on that hardware, perhaps with the birth of communities of developers could get back to having firmware upgrades of some importance or potentially customize the camera as you prefer …
It would be great. Some geniuses around the world could make it rocket speed fast and accurate! The rebirth of the X-Pro1!
Why only limit this to X-Pro series?
The X-T1 and other x-serie camera’s could also benefit from an open source firmware.
If I were Fuji I won’t do that. One of the most important features of a serious camera is reliability. You can’t be sure in reliability of an open source software camera. The only camera maker I’d ask for open source firmware is Samsung. NX series cameras are gadgets anyway.
That’s true, reliability is very important, but check the Nikon Hacker project…after only one year (more or less) they come to a very stable firmware hack (tested personally on my Nikon) and they do it without any documentation about Nikon firmware. CHDK for Canon camera is even better than factory firmware…I think third party firmware should be just an alternative to original firmware, so if you don’t feel confident, you can keep your camera with factory firmware…
As I understand that’s just a hack. So there is no need in open-source firmware. It would be hacked anyway. If you make your firmware an opensource you approve that third party soft is OK. When it’s just a hack, everybody understand their own risk. It’s just a matter of marketing. Also when you release open-source you approve that you’re not able to push your cameras to the limits by the company resources. That’s a marketing fault too.
For sure, Fujifilm will never release the entire source code. “Sensible” parts could be released, for example, as precompiled library…exactly as Nikon Hack team did, you can patch only some part of the original firmware (that you have to understand anyway) with your custom one. This could help user to avoid bricks, bugs and so on…Is just one way, but there are a lot other!
How many bricked X-Pros do you think would be the result?
If firmware is released together with documentation, I think no one…
Have you ever frequented the forums of a non-standard firmware provider? Probably 10-15% are people saying they’ve bricked their phone/router/computer etc. Not to mention the dire warnings accompanying every download: “THIS MIGHT BRICK YOUR DEVICE”.
10-15 % ?
Maybe because nobody will say “This firmware works like a charm for me” whereas every people who encoutners a problem will post it ?
Whatever the number is, it is certainly more than “no one”.
Rich, I’m a software engineer, 10 years on embedded systems…re-firmwared my oven too!
No thethered shooting options for Mac OSX !!!
That’s insane a large number of professional photographers prefer Mac OS X above Windows (not to want a discussion here about that though).
Fuji. Why the need to force a large number of photographers to use an OS that they don’t want to use if they need thethering.
You are right, Mac is important, too! But I cannot stop remarking you get 21 new features and still dissapointed, while I get 1, that is not so vital for me.
You can install the Windows program via Parallels or Vmware Fusion on your Mac. I do that with several other Windows-only programs, works like a charm
You can, but that is not the point of choosing for OS X as a Operating System.
It is also cumbersome, costs extra money and can make systems instable.
prefer or use becaus its a mac… ;P
Lovely news!
It would have been awesome with electronic shutter for the xe2 – does anyone know if the lack of this feature for the xe2 is a matter of strategy from Fuji or if it’s simply impossible to implement with the current hardware?
Purely marketing.
I’m so disapointed (as a X-E1 user). More color for focus peaking, intervalometer and maybe better implementation of Exposure compensation on Manual mode and I’d have very happy…
Manual control for video could also be the cherry on the cake (and direct focus area selection).
I’m pretty sure hardware will be compatible with most of those functions but Fuji developpers decided to skip it…
Howabout me. X-M1 ..nothing,,,i wished for classic chrome and negB, and in silent, silent shutter 😉 it would be so great. need to get my hands on a x-t1..
Looks like they’ve abandoned the X-M1 and X-A1.
Yepp, It was cheap, i know, but newer than x-e1.. I like it.
You can’t be sure there is no fixing for EC in M. X-T1GS is already fixed. X-T1 has to get one in order to be the same that X-T1GS. And it’s not on the list. I think it’s still there but not mentioned. Thus you can’t be sure there is no such fix in X-E1 update.
X-E1 is two years old. I have a two year old D800. I would love a firmware upgrade to bring it up to the FPS and other features of the D810 but I know that will never, ever happen. It’s called progress. Am I disappointed that I have a D800 and not a D810? ABSOLUTELY NOT! My D800 is still generating images that sell, as is my X-E1, and my X-T1
This is called planned obsolescence in fact, not progress 😉
For X-E2 I would also like to see this improvements (from X-T1 improvements):
1) 1. High-speed electronic shutter with a maximum speed of 1/32000sec.
5) Direct selection of AF area
8) Direct selection of Macro mode
9) Q. Menu customization
10) New Video Frame rates (50P / 25P / 24P)
11) Manual Shooting in Video mode
12) Phase detection AF support for Instant AF
14) Expansion of shutter speed in Program Shift mode
16) Instax Printer Print
18) Three Custom White Balance
21) PC tethered shooting support
Especialy first 2 will be helpfull.
Instax printer and tether.
At the xe 2’s price point it should be able to tether.
As an x-e1 and x-e2 owner I’m very happy. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect new features on a camera that has been discontinued about a year. Obviously Fuji need to make some money in order to stay afloat – that means differentiation between models. I also don’t expect all the features of the X-T1 in the X-E2. But then I’m a realist… I would like Classic Chrome on my classic X100, but I don’t expect it.
I’m pretty sure minor improvement won’t make X-E1 a comparable camera to X-T1 : autofocus, ergonomy, weather sealing guaranty X-T1 to be sold.
No, but improvements to the X-E2 would. And improvements to the X-E1 would prevent people buying the X-E2. It’s true. I bought an X-E2 rather than an X-T1 a couple of months ago because the difference in features was not worth the extra £500.
As a X-E1 owner, I won’t buy a X-E2 anydays, maybe an X-T2 or X-T1 when it’ll cost nothing.
Or probably a Sony as I feel they become better and better and lenses are coming.
Fair enough. I’m invested in the lenses and wanted a bit of extra speed for capturing my toddler growing up. The X-E2 can be had very cheaply now. I’ll probably get an X-T1 when the X-T2 comes out… Sony may be releasing some new lenses, but will anyone be able to afford them?
Some of sony lenses are quite cheap. For example 50mm. It’s quite great optically (although nowhere near 56) and very cheap.
sony 50mm for FE system is 1000 bucks…
I was talking about aps-c system. 50/1.8 is $300.
Still more than a 50/1.8 usually costs though.
*And the FE is a 55mm. 😉
But cheaper then fuji lenses. Mirrorless is expensive. Crappy DSLRs are still cheaper.
crappy dslr are…well…crappy
But still quite usable with great IQ. And cheap as well
Be sure that quite a few that converted to MLIC went after a few months back to DSLR after a lot of frustration. It’s only now that this market seems to get technically a bit mature, with concepts that stay on the road.. No numbers are not confirming that there is a real changeover to the present MLIC-solutions…What does a pro do… buy the least risk & a tight budget? What will happen is that at some point of time both worlds will come back together in one mainstream concept.
I doubt it. I think in some time CSC will start overriding DSLRs in more and more genres, The last one will be sports of course. In the end it will surrender too (as a mainstream). I think my kids will have hard time in explaining their kids why have a camera had a strange complicated flipping mirrors system. It’s just like some of Fuji users now have never used a rangefinder camera and can’t imagine how it works. Yeah, sports CSC will probably look like DSLRs because of the ergonomics. It’s best for placing as much buttons as possible in the easy to reach places. But it’ll still be CSC. For me the first sign is A6000. It’s AF and internal electronics speed has really impressed me. I haven’t used GH4. I’ve read it’s even faster. Give me A6000 speed in X-pro1-like body (with some improvements that are present in other Fuji’s cameras) and i’ll drop D700 and D750(if i’ll get it) the same moment. In fact this can already happen this winter when X-Pro2 comes. We’ll I’m looking forward for the announcement.
And if A7II rumor is right, IBIS and better AF !
It seems to be true as A6000 is extraordinary fast. Fast AF and fast ergonomics. A7II has to inherit this speed if possible technologically
No, the 50mm Zeiss for the A7 is $800
I was talking about aps-c 50mm. I one counts the money he won’t get a7
Sony is still a horrid company. Cameras – even the full frame, based on reviews, not my first hand experience are not that good. Lenses are slowly trickling out – never mind what they are up to now–their third different lens mount? And support is atypical Sony Baaaaaad. And THAT’s from personal experience with Sony products. I would never, ever own a Sony camera. Ever. They present and show a good game, but they play like crap.
The a7 I own has the best image quality of any camera I’ve ever owned. Full stop.
It’s got lots of issues, but IQ is most definitely not one of them.
Hear! Hear! A realist in our midst.
Booh.
I Want cc on the pro.
Seems to be only available on camera’s that have a X-Trans II.
Might have something to do with coding.
Good to me I sold X-E2 and got resonable money for it. I knew it X-E2 is Fujifilm “forgotten child” though it was released amost THE SAME time as X-T1 but look how many improvements – and worthy – got X-T1 and how dog’s-meat got X-E2 – this is all true about Fujifilm “Kaizen” and how they badly played with X-E2 users – they appreciated only X-T1 camera buyers – thouse who paid most, though X-E2 was not a cheap camera. This make me sick to read about how “great” is Kaizen, which actually for X-E2 users turned out to be a poor, though some fuji fanboys will say oposite as all the time they “have to be happy”.
wah wah, i bought an x-pro1 for $1700…it still works great
Wow it’s really getting close to maturity now. Tethered shooting, and possibly soon a proper flash system as well, what else do protogs need?
– Good RAW support
– Better tracking
– Faster AF
And consumers still want
– Useable video
Consumers? Ah yes, they who are unworthy. Who are they exactly? Somehow it’s always somebody other than ourselves, the mystical ones who do not dare speak about themselves. That’s who shoots moooving pictures, oh the horror. Real photogs freeze motion faster than light hits the sensor.
– Good RAW support
Not really anything Fuji can do if developers can’t be ars… to make a fine job; Now there is a variety of really good raw developpers free and paying for Windows, Mac & Linux; So this claim is getting old.
kaizen my ass… no update for x100s. to protect the new x100t, I guess.
My two cents. Firmware update for the old x100 happened to be released after some months from the x100s release…probably, they just wait to sell some units and build up a new code.
Remember that x100s production is discontinued, so there is nothing to “protect”
If you release latest firmware improvements for X100S less people will have reason to upgrade. So holding back on firmware does serve as sales protection.
They even could update the x100s so that it has a better resale-value for those who want to sell the x100s to buy a x100t. Would be winning on both sides. I see no reason not to upgrade the x100s, and lots of reasons to do so.
time to sell my XT1 and buy the new sony a7II !
Yeah. And do the same with the lenses… ^^
sure i can use nik, can, sonyA, and 100 years old lenses in original format
Yep. You have the choice:
– huge system with DSLR lenses or
– rangefinder lenses with horrible corner performance
Then I can crop those horrible corner and get APS-C equivalent ?
For what?
To find out that the grass isn’t any greener despite the A7ii being full frame?
Hence the bad customer experience and horrible handling.
Those Sony’s look nice on paper, but they feel like machines.
Not a camera for photographers.
Really? Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Damn right! Just throw those XF lenses in the garbage, but place them nicely in the original boxes first to show them you’re serious.
What is your address, and day of trash pickup?
Wait, there’s an A7 mkII already? Oh, improved AF speed? How? New software?! Almost certain poor mk I owners will NOT be receiving a firmware update, unlike us lucky Fuji owners have in the past. But you carry on…
Listen, I’m an a7 owner. It’s a camera capable of outstanding image quality, but the lens selection is dismal. I bought my a7 with the 35mm Zeiss which is an AWESOME lens for this camera, but here’s the thing:
The auto focus is rubbish. Word is that a7II will make it 30% faster. 30% faster than rubbish is still pretty much rubbish. The start up time is 5 or 6 seconds if it’s been off for a while. That’s pretty bad, especially since the battery drain is pretty severe if you keep it on. The shutter is loud. Compared to my X-E1, it’s kind of cartoonish how much louder it is. Not the biggest issue for sure, but still an issue.
Having said all that, I just bought an adapter for my Canon glass to try the 24-105mm on the a7. The image quality really is 2nd to none. If the adapter is really usable, then I’ll stay with the a7, but if the MF is kind of a pain with that bigger lens, I may very well sell the a7, my Canon glass, and go all in on the Fuji.
Problem is, the video on the Fuji cameras pretty much sucks. I use that for family events, so it would be a real bummer to lose that.
so much sony haters… probably because you miss FF 😉 and its a feature that your kaizen will never bring ahaaha
It’s dissapointing x-e2 is taking such a back seat to x-t1, given they were released close to the same time, at similar prices.
Still hoping for silent electronic shutter for x-e2. I would use & recommend my Fuji much more with this.
Similar prices and close release times…. NOT really
in the UK the x-e2 was launched at £800 and the X-T1 £1050 : that’s over 30% more expensive; not sure about the euro or $ prices but they must have been in the same ballpark;
And the 1st was available in oct 2013 and the second in Feb 2014 that’s nearly 1/2 year; Today the x-e2 price fell 30% and the x-t1 20%;
So you are comparing apples & oranges I am afraid;
Looking forward to the AF/MF combo. Just like I had on my old Oly E-M1. I really liked that feature. It helps you get the focus corrected if AF is having trouble looking on to the exact spot you want. So….AF to get it mostly right, then spin the focus ring to fine tune it. Great 🙂
All my DSLR lenses before the Fuji had a instant override – it will be really nice to have it again, it´s very useful.
I am little down since the X-Pro1 got left behind – just an update nobody was really missing.
My comfort: the upcoming X-Pro2 will have all those X-T1 features plus even more amazing stuff in a body that should be kicking ass like none before.
I don’t think there will be a X-Pro 2.
Its probably be going to be called X-Pro MKII.
Mk II, more optimistic than I am
That means speed, speed and speed…… (thinking of NX1).
And not to forget IBIS (thinking of A7II) for the 16-55 F2.8 and primes in case you want to do it slow.
Right.
And maybe 24 megapixels? I hope so. This way at some point they will have to upgrade the other cameras in the line. Anyone care for a X-T2?
I think maybe there will be no X-Pro2 at this point. I hope I am wrong, but do not think it will happen.
it would be great if on the X-T1 they upgraded the bracketing to -+1,-+2- AND -+3
Tethered shooting software for Windows only? Dang. I hope that C1 will catch up.
Speaking of X-T1 promised new features…
1. Great. Right on time for the white snow! Hopefully, no more messing with ND filters at subzero temps.
2. Meh. I know, many people wanted it, but I never liked Kodachrome.
3. Not sure what they mean, but it sounds like a “boostless” view mode unhooked from the exposure. Why the hell would anyone want that?
4. Sounds like we’ll see ICM viewfinder profiles in our lifetime!…
5. Let me guess, another change of workflow? Hopefully, this is an optional feature.
6. This one is cryptic. I guess, by “unlocked” they meant “swappable”.
7. At last! Yay! Hopefully it also means variable size.
8. Eh… directer (directier)) than a current implementation? What for? How about a much more useful focus limiter?
9. I am cautiously enthusiastic about this one. Hopefully they will implement it correctly and without holdbacks.
10. Sounds good, but I am not a video shooter. In terms of video, I’d rather see some ultra high-speed mode, like 1000+ fps with reduced resolution.
11. Now we’re getting somewhere!
12. How about face detection in “instant AF”?
13. Oh look, it’s 80’s all over again! Let’s listen to Bonnie Tyler and enjoy a revolutionary metering system!
14. Up to 4 seconds in a green zone?! Forget Bonnie Tyler, where’s Abba?
15. Sounds good.
16. Allright, they sold me that thing.
17. Next step – password protection 🙂
18. Hell yeah! I wanted it for a long time!
19. A good one. Film is dead, now we are witnessing the extinction of OVFs.
20. How about a focus memory then? Totally possible with correct implementation.
21. Mac? Wireless tethering? iDevices? FTP? Heey?
You’d better use the link to Fuji’s site. There’s more there with definitions of each item. You won’t be confused anymore.
I’ve been to official announce page before I wrote the comment above, thank you. Actually, I kept it open while writing it.
What part of my “confusion” might be solved by going to Fuji’s site again?
3. Not sure what they mean, but it sounds like a “boostless” view mode unhooked from the exposure. Why the hell would anyone want that?
6. This one is cryptic. I guess, by “unlocked” they meant “swappable”.
8. Eh… directer (directier)) than a current implementation? What for? How about a much more useful focus limiter?
These look like you’ve tried to guess using only short name. I thought you haven’t been on the website.
3. My description (“boostless” view mode unhooked from the exposure) seems to be spot on. However, I’ll take back my remark “why the hell would anyone want that?” – there are many “pic modes” that totally instagrammatize destroy the image in EVF. The fact that I don’t use any of these modes doesn’t mean that no one does. So yeah, some people might find it useful.
6. I said “this one is cryptic” because it is. Part of the “marketing speak” is “what you’ve read is not necessarily what I wrote”, and description of #6 in Fuji’s announce is one of the good examples of that “marketing speak”.
8. Same as the above, “marketing speak”. I think that I understood what they meant by this “poorly translated” description, and so do you. Our understanding of it is not necessarily the same, and it’s always pretty easy for Fuji to claim later on that they meant yet some other thing altogether. Hence this one is “cryptic”, too.
Let’s wait and see how they implement that.
6. The function of the AE-L / AF-L button is currently locked, but will be interchangeable, depending on the user’s preference.
8. In Autofocus mode, the update will enable the Macro function to be turned on or off, without accessing the pop-up menu screen.
It’s crystal clear to me what they have meant. I can’t imagine any ambiguity. Ok. That’s just blah-blah. The updates are great and we are glad).
“3. Not sure what they mean, but it sounds like a “boostless” view mode unhooked from the exposure. Why the hell would anyone want that? ”
If you’re a RAW shooter you are going to like this.
EVF display is now what you would see in as if it were in one of the film mode.
This new setting allows you to view the scene as it is without any colourshift and contrast that is in the film mode that you have had choosen as a JPG output.
Having purchased an X-E2 less than a year ago, when it was a top of the line camera, I am disappointed. If Fuji wanted to encourage customer loyalty with “Kaizen”, it has had the opposite effect for me.
Then sell the X-E2, and maybe buy a new, or pre-owned X-T1 if you want the features that badly. Jesus… I have a D800 that is two years old, It shoots 4FPS. I would love to have a firmware upgrade to the 5 or 6 FPS of the D810 but I know that will never happen. You have to be somewhat realistic here.
So many fujifanboys around the corner… I own the A-1, E-1 + E-2 and 4 lenses, and even that, I didn’t get yet this affective disorder.
I also bought my XE2 less than a year ago and I don’t remember it being top of the line. That has always been the X Pro 1 or XT-1.
Feeling orphan here:-( Paid 1299EUR/1600USD for a premium X camera last December and I feel disappointed that X-E2 is comparable to older models .E-2 belongs to the same generation as the XT-1 and should includes ALL the features announced (specially 5-12 features).
Must have been the price WITH a lens at launch no ?
I think you belong behind a Canon then. They wait ages to update their models, so you can feel happy about your purchase longer. Let me know when you eBay your lenses.
Next time I get Drunk I’ll let you know. Cheers 🙂
X-E2 View Mode :
Still no “View Mode SWITCH”? (SWITCH the “View Mode” without the need to look at a menu!)
Still only one view mode setting for all operating modes?
Please retain 3 different “view mode” settings for the 3 different operating modes:
– Shooting mode –> EVF Only + Eye sensor to turn EVF on/off.
– Playback mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
– Change Settings mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
By giving this possibility, the photographer should be very rarely in the need to change View Mode settings.
Wonderful additions. I wonder why they did not expand the range of bracketed exposures. It is such a common complaint. Since most of us bought the X-T1 with open eyes about the poor video it is odd that they spent so much resources on video improvement instead of that bracketing feature that many still photographers find essential.
Now that would have been a very useful improvement! Maybe 5-6 exposure bracket. I can get a way with 3 when needed but more would be somewhat helpful in certain situations.
Big big disappointment for X-E2 owners if you ask me. The most desirable features on the X-T1 list (except for tethered control) are missing.
Then sell the X-E2, and maybe buy a new, or pre-owned X-T1 if you want the features that badly. Jesus… I have a D800, It shoots 4FPS. I would love to have a firmware upgrade to the 11FPS of the D4s, but I know that will never happen. You have to be somewhat realistic here.
Sorry, … I don’t care about FPS, Shutterspeed or top features that depends on special hardware or processors. I just care about Interface and Usability Updates. Yes WIFI and interval shooting is nice but I guess it will be rarely used compared to the menu system.
I really hoped for more menu and interface updates. Direct AF selection, Q-Menü, etc. which will benefit to every day I use my X-E2.
btw. coming back to WIFI the one thing that makes no sense is the fact that the X-E2 will be the ONLY Fuji Camera with WIFI built-in that can’t utilize the instax printer. From a marketing point of view strange: Cause this would increase the chance that more people would by this printer and the accessories ($$$). Even the small X-M1 can print. *rollingeyes*
btw. this autofocus override will likely not work with lenses that have this special MF switch on the lense like the 14mm or 23mm. We’ll see how this should work.
Wollari, the autofocus overide has essentially been a feature of the 14 and 23mm lenses already, so the upgrade naturally wouldn’t apply to any lens with the manual focus clutch. Perhaps you don’t own either lens. All you do is focus automatically, then just pull the focusing ring towards you and fine focus. You get exactly the same results, which maybe takes 1/10 second longer than with the firmware upgrade. I own both the 14 and 23mm lenses (they are wonderful to shoot with). And for the record, I’m very happy with the upgrades that Fuji has given to the X-E2. Coming from the Nikon world, this treatment of customers is like night and day.
Maybe I was a bit to harsh on the comments. I know I’m also more then happy with has happened already! For me the auto focus override doesn’t work on the 14 or 23. The moment I pull the focus ring it focuses on whatever the scale says. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, who knows.
I just wanted to say that I really miss some of the current features that gets introduced the X-T1. The Focus Point Selection is the top one, cause with my toddler running around I’m constantly switching the AF point to get it into the best position. Everything else is a goodie IMHO.
Right now I’ll not upgrade to a X-T1. I would rather save the money for whatever sensor comes after the current X-Trans II. I really like the X-T1 and GS, but I decided to spend the money on glass rather then the body with the exact same sensor. Therefore I hoped for minor interface upgrades.
Fair enough Wollari and I might have written a wee bit to fast. You’re right about the the 14 and 23 focusing on whatever the scale says. It’s not really a bother for me, but I was wrong about that. And I think that you’re very wise to invest in the glass over the bodies. I won’t be upgrading from the X-E2 for another generation or two, and then only if the range finder form is still offered.
Some more changes for the X-E2 and I would buy it immediately (especially the points 5,6 and 9 of the X-T1 Firmware). But without that, I will keep my X-E1 and wait for a X-E3.
… even the direct AF point selection would be enough for me to buy a X-E2. I really liked it on my OM-D E-M5, so that it became my most wanted feature.
I had the X-E1. Nothing wrong with that camera!!
To all the people complaining about the “insufficient” firmware improvements on their XE2, sell your gear and buy a Nikon or Canon. You’ll be much happier with all the firmware updates they do. REALLY??? You guys are unappreciative idiots. If I was Fuji reading these comments, I’d be tempted to stop “kaizen” altogether with this type of feedback. Sure you can be disappointed, but show some appreciation. Fuji doesn’t have to give free FW updates.
Hear!! Hear!!
Agreed. I’m thrilled with Fuji, and I own Nikon as well!
Fuji doesn’t have to give updates, but we don’t have to buy Fuji cameras nor to keep them. “I switched back from Fuji” is not a good advertisment. 😉
On the other hand you are right when these updates add new features we shouldn’t be unappreciative. I will gratefully accept the remote control as a very nice christmas gift.
But we can also consider updates as attempts to fix half-finished cameras. Users have made a list of correction requests and most of these requests date back from the X100. Only a few have been fullfilled till now. Exposure compensation in Tav mode for example is clearly a missing feature or maybe even a bug. And what about the automatic minimum shutter speed feature which was REMOVED by firmware update ?
I understand why some or us are getting a bit tired of waiting.
Kaizen is a good philosophy in my opinion because it allows users to contribute to the improvement of Fuji cameras. We should continue to support it by giving feedback to Fuji. Even if sometimes it looks ungrateful. People wouldn’t even talk about Fuji cameras if they didn’t appreciate them after all…
Had a D800 since the first day. A lot of issues that where never resolved with firmware…instead Nikon drop a new “improved” model and SURPRISE, the issues where resolved there (but really…that was only matter of software). Yeah…RC is right to me
Thanks Allessandro! Interestingly, I also bought a D800 (and still have it). Maybe being jaded by other companies makes us more appreciative of what Fuji is doing.
I agree… feedback is important. And I understand the disappointment that is voiced in some of the comments. I am a proud owner of the original X100 and when I bought that camera, I knew all the quirks coming in and I never expected them to be solved for free in firmware. I believe (just my own opinion) when you buy a product, it should be bought with the notion that it is what it is. Not half finished. I agree that Fuji still can improve a lot of things, I just think the tone of the comments can be more appreciative of the fact that they are listening at all and I would suggest not buying into a camera with the expectation that things will be improved. Most companies listen to request in the next iteration of the camera. In an ideal world, sure. I agree. Camera companies should do what Fuji is attempting to do. But in reality, most (ALL) do not! And so we should be encouraging Fuji, that they are at least trying to do the nice thing. I even encourage the voice of disappointment, my original comment was directed more at the posters who said that these FW updates gave them a negative feel or that they were somehow being left out. It’s one thing to want and another thing to expect. One poster said that Kaizen had an opposite effect on them in regards to loyalty because it didn’t meet their expectation. Our disappointments I feel, should be more of “I wish” instead of “Fuji needs to…” Fuji does not need to do anything.
I understand your point.
Nikon SLR have been there for decades and are perfectly mature. When you buy a Nikon you know it will never improve … even if something goes wrong.
Fuji has chosen a different strategy, a “Bugzilla” strategy. Users were used as beta testers to develop a whole range of advanced camera from a point and shoot base. Moreover Fuji themselves advertize firmware updates. When you buy a Fuji, you expect updates … always more and more updates.
Can Fuji go out of this trap, or at least tame down expectations now that they have a full range of products ? I think it is possible to make a shortlist of something like ten of the most popular requests which, applied to all X cameras, would significantly improve their usability to the level of Canikon and make most users satisfied.
You are definitely right about the bugzilla strategy. I also appreciate your comment about the trap that Fuji has found themselves in and that this expectation that is going around is very much the result of Fuji’s own marketing campaign.
Fuji should have made the X-T1 accessible via http:// or ftp:// (better) so you could use any computer.
Its CRAP that Fuji thinks all people use Windows.
Dear Fuji!
Many professional photographers are on the ‘other’ platform called Mac OS X.
They can’t make use of this new thethered feature without installing a operating system that they have abandoned for good reasons…
Disappointing updates for the X-E2. Wireless shooting is nice, but nobody cried for classic chrome or an interval timer. Direct AF point selection, unlock AF-L/AE-L buttons and Q.Menu customization are interesting features. So there are no reasons for me to upgrade my X-E1 to an X-E2.
LOL, lots of people have been asking for an interval timer since before the T1 arrived.
Show me any other company, which supports cameras in that case like Fuji did! This is unbelievable what your guys doing here! Just to be happy, that ONE company try to give you some features by update for FREE for cameras, which implement new features into older models, you kick Fuji in the a..!
Seems mankind cannot be satisfied with anything!
Poor guys!
+1 !
Many on here argue too that if Fuji released cameras properly on release date, little or no need for FW upgrades down road.
Do not get wrong here, I love FujiFilm and have three X-series, but at same time, as X100(i) and X-Pro1 shooter, there are man simple things needed addressing that never happen.
You mean you never would have bought the camera way back then if you knew it wouldn’t get Classic Chrome simulation now? 😉
no chrome for the xe1. that bites.
No X100S love? *sob* It would have been fun to have Classic Chrome and customizable Q menu.
Three points about tethered shooting:
1) Awesome, finally!
2) Why on earth is it USB only? All recent X series cameras have a WiFi interface for image transfer and live view via iOS/Android. So why is it not supported on the Desktop side? Shooting with a USB cable is such a pain. I would really have expected the tethering system to support WiFi as an alternative to USB.
3) Since the creative professional market is a 50/50 split between Windows/OS X, with highend photo studios (especially the rent ones) usually being all Mac, the software should really be available for both platforms. However, having direct support inside Capture One and Lightroom would probably enough for most jobs.
WiFi image transfer is handy, but compared to a cable interface it is sloooooooooooow… impractically slow, if you’re transferring raw files (as you might do if you need a live backup of critical shots.) If you’re going to the bother of using a desktop PC as a tether base, you probably want the speed. I agree it would have been nice to have both options — but if Fuji had to start with one or the other (in the interest of getting the product out the door, maybe with the idea of updating it later) they made the right initial choice.
Let’s hope there’s a documented API for the tether features, so Mac developers can add it to other products via plug-ins…
I assume battery life too would be greatly impact with wifi tether mode.
I don’t think battery life is that big of an issue. Aftermarket batteries are about 6€ here in Europe. I’d rather swap batteries every half an hour or so than troubleshoot some annoying tether cable issue every 10 minutes and get my camera’s ports damaged because of someone tripping over it.
I’ve been waiting for the possibility to change the color of the focus peaking on my X-M1 and, again, no good news.
I only hope that they have not already forgotten this gorgeous camera and their –users–.
Speaking of tethered shooting… I hope they will enable shutter button / cable release in WiFi/tethered mode.
Very happy with new x-e2 Firmware. Nothing to complain.
Damn you Fuji. Here I was contemplating moving back to Nikon, but not because of any short comings by Fuji, but my desire for cheap AF lenses that are good enough for my use.
For comparison, Sony announced their own December firmware update for the Sony A77II, their APS-C flagship camera. Here’s the full list of changes for it:
1. Auto focus up to 2.5 times faster at low light!*
(* Internal measurement method DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM when mounted)
2. XAVC-S recording
Fuji’s Kaizen clearly smacks down Sony’s…
I would trade all the new firmware improvements for a wider range of auto-bracketing.
Yes, and not to bang on about this but in support of my point above, this might well be the last firmware update the A77II ever gets. From memory, my A900 had two updates in the whole 4 years it was in production. And none of them were want you’d call value-add really.
I was really hoping for an option to disable that video record button on the X-T1.
But still no color focus peaking for the xpro1…
FujiFilm – what about X-M1 ? There are only 5 film simulation profiles! X-Q1 has more profiles !
Will tethered shooting support RAW files in Lightroom? That’s the key question here…
Lightroom has an Auto Import feature. So you can use the Fujifilm supplied software, and whenever the Fuji software downloads a new image into the target folder, Lightroom will automatically import that into the catalog and display it. It is pretty much the exact same thing as tethered shooting, except you don’t have that idiotic additional tethered shooting toolbar that always obscures part of the image, no matter how much you try to move it out of view.
I’d strongly consider Capture One for tethered shooting, though. The workflow with the Capture Pilot iOS app is quite nice and image quality is a lot better than Lightroom (goes for pretty much any camera system, not just Fuji raw files). Tethering is also more robust/stable.
I loved my X-E2 from the first day I got it (March), I loved it even more when the EVF refresh rate was increased in the last firmware – and I will surely love it even more now with WIFI shooting and manual focus adjustment on top of AF – this is “Kaizen” enough for me.
I look forward to the updated firmware for the XT-1 but I would have liked the Classic Chrome addition for my X-Pro1. I was hoping it would have been added since there’s still no direct model replacement yet.
they kidding? why X-E2 does not have the same innovations that X-T1 ??? where New Video Frame rates, Manual Shooting in Video mode ???
my x-e2 just awful video with firmware 2.1 🙁
You don’t miss much, more options but still looks horrid.
At the moment I miss everything, as the camera tells me to configure how best to shoot video 🙂 and he is very bad and sad turns
I’m hoping the XE2 will eventually get most of the XT-1’s FW upgrades. Maybe Fuji wants to make sure the updates go smoothly then trickle them down to the XE2. That natural live view and EVF/LCD color control looks pretty cool. No reason the XE2 can’t have that.
Still holding fingers for a significant X100s kaizen version. It’s disappointing how such a widely used and loved camera continues to be the Cinderella of this family. No kaizen love. Version 3.0 for X-T1 and not even a 2.0 for X100s.
No Classic Chrome love for the X Pro1, Fuji Rumors?
Classic Chrome was developed for the Xtrans 2 sensor so I doubt it will come to the Xpro1/X-E1/X-M1 etc
What a great set of upgrades for the X-T1. These really add value. Disappointed that there is no EC in Manual [sorry, Trenton] Mode but there is no question that I will get more out of my X-T1 now. Thanks, Fuji!
Would anyone knows what is the advantage of mechanical vs electronic shutter?
I mean, if electronic works in silent and as well as mechanical, why not going 100% electronic?
Also, as per Fuji, electronic is not only for high speed: “electronic shutter in 1/3 steps from a range of 1sec to 1/32000sec”.
Mh…actually I have just noticed this from Fuji: “The Electronic Shutter may not be suitable for fast-moving objects. Flash can not be used.”.
Any idea why and what impact fast moving objects or using flash would have?
We have a pretty good idea, look at “rolling shutter” effect and read about flash sync speeds
Take a photo with your phone camera from the moving train of something close outside, like buildings or poles, and you will see what happens – it’s like warping space-time 😉
It means you can use your 1.2 primes wide open on a bright sunny day. It is not suitable for flash or fast moving subjects though. I think it’s a great addition
This guy has a good example of the rolling shutter effect caused by electronic shutter when shooting fast moving objects (the image with the truck) http://bjornmoerman.blogspot.de/2014/10/two-weeks-on-road-with-fujifilm-x100t.html
Don’t get it. So only the AF+MF stuff for the X-E1 and nothing else???
X-e1 got already several big updates in the past. Is that nothing?
With you on that one. Looking forward to having any random new features on my XE-1 when they come up but not really expecting them any more. Yeah, they might (and possibly could) but really… not feeling like there’s any obligation.
Can’t Fuji develop their cameras first time right like anyone else in this segment is capable to do? A fluent AF/MF override is something even entry-level DSLRs can deliver you in 2014. But only by very small bits & pieces Fuji seems to understand how a decent AF-system with 3D tracking should work. When will we see a refined and fully reliable AF-S/C 3D scan mode like in the pro-DSLRs? Unfortunately the next A7/A9’s are going to have about everything standard what Fuji fails to develop – including a high resolution FF-sensor – but at about an equal price setting. How long can that last? The X-Pro2 must almost be a miracle camera at an extremely attractive price setting to overcome this ‘issue’ and if this is the only X-camera to be expected in 2015 I predict that a massive wave of cheaper and cheaper Fuji’s will get on e-bay. Fuji must get awake that this X-T1 is not an endpoint, but a next technology step is getting urgent to keep the X-series alive in the market.
I know. And where are all the flying cars and teleportation machines? AF is very complicated, the DSLR manufacturers have been refining their systems for the past 30 years but doing little other innovation, Fuji has limited resources (as all companies do) and needs to split resource across lots of different developments, including our beloved kaizen improvements. If they got it “right first time” like…erm, who exactly…then we wouldn’t get any of these iterative improvements that we like so much, and nor would, for example, Toyota be where it is now (look it up). “Hey Fuji, why can’t you see the future, allocate infinite development resource to develop perfect technology in 2 weeks and never get anything even slightly wrong, you know, like me because I’m really clever”. Why can’t you just say “Thanks Fuji for continuing to invest in your customers despite many of them having given you all the money they will ever give you”? They don’t have to do that you know, and most manufacturers don’t. I’m an ex Sony shooter, I had the full frame A900 and had a couple of their crop SLTs too. Loved them. But Sony never gave support like Fuji, and believe me this is a better experience. Oh, and FF lenses are massive and heavy and expensive. Or if they are what I consider reasonably sized then they are slow. So by all means go for the A7 range etc., or the rumoured A9. They will be fine cameras without a doubt. Especially if you make wall-sized prints and need 36mp, or really really really shallow DOF. But if you don’t, then I guarantee you’ll start wondering why your images don’t look any better but your back has started hurting. This all meant constructively 🙂 Enjoy 🙂
Thank you! IT seems doubtful that anyone could have said it better.
Is that all true? 1) Zooms (certainly with OS) might be a different story but he Fuji primes are not really ‘so much smaller’ than FF equals in the DSLR world (look f.i. at the excellent AF-S G F1.8 FF Nikkor range). Lighter, yes but I’m rather concerned that even the built quality and concept (fly by wire, no ultrasonic drives) isn’t playing in the same league. Second hands value of XF-glass is… (extremely disappointing, telling part of the story) 2) The X-Pro1 has been everything but a solid, well conceived piece of hardware, change that ‘slightly wrong’ in ‘almost a disaster’. I can tell you, in the EU Fuji’s after sales service org feels to be very weak. 3) LCN is right, we should be worried about the entire Fuji X future if they don’t start ramping up their R&D-pace in a sense the concepts remain credible versus their actual pricing. Imagine I’m an advanced user thinking of a new MLIC system – when I have the choice between a crop X-T1 yrs old 16MP and a A9/A7 II with a more recent, advanced high resolution, high DR FF sensor, a perfect AF and a well supported RAW-workflow at the same price I’m really not going to think too long. 4) Fuji is just a small niche-filling manufacturer fighting very hard to publish not too disappointing sales reports – regarding services they are not even the slightest bit better than all major players. 5) Kaizen…I’m caring more about the future and legacy value than this silly mantra – just a nice wrapper around just a not very strong R&D management and according QC.
Slow lenses on full-frame with better body high-iso performance and soon IBIS and more shallow DOF isn’t really a problem…
In fact, the real problem is Sony’s bodies are really cheap / small for what they offer or Fuji are too expensive. Only problem is Zeiss lenses are too expensive and there isn’t that much Sony lenses. But with new lenses coming and legacy lenses…
(and Fuji lenses are not cheap in my opinion)
This is true about Fujifilm Kaizen marketing that many Fuji users are blind to see. They are so grateful, thankful and happy that the company gave them some new features and improvements to older cameras that were already standards in released cams of other makers like Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax. Look how massive wave of used Fuji cameras get on ebay and forums , it’s because people see that Fuji does offer so minor valuable improvements in new cameras compared to other companies. Now only X-T1 is giving some worth features and improvements, X-E2/X-Pro1/X-E1/X-100s nothing valuable and what really matters, so next part of these users will sell them and will move to other makers. Fujis strategy is really mistaken, if they will not wake up than Sony will eat them.
Fujifilm can’t compete with Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and with a few other camera makers, that’s why Fuji would have made better to give as much as possible new features in firmware upgrades to its cameras to keep the users with Fuji. Seeing all these new firmware updates it seems Fujifilm is focusing seriously only on X-T1 which received very nice and widely expected improvements, but belittled needs of all users with older cameras mentioned above. I think this was not wise Fujifilm decision.
But isn’t it a pity? When I purchased the X-Pro1 in the first wave I hoped to have some kind of Leica M-killer. Pretty soon I learned this first X-series camera was rather some kind of fly-by-wire computer trial-project instead of a solid camera concept. Being a small player they should have stayed on the path of being a more traditional camera-manufacturer. No fly by wire lenses, but the real stuff. No crop frame but 35mm sensors like professionals were used to. No fake old school… but real, solid old school refined, traditional approach, including f.i. a real curtain shutter keeping your sensor dust-free. Yes, the X-E2 and T1 was the first version that did hold the road. But what’s next? I don’t think that 5-axis predictive AF and stabilized sensors are somewhere in the pipeline. Wouldn’t we be surprised the X-Pro2 finally becomes nothing more than just a mix of the X-E2 and the X-100T hybrid VF, including the same old 16MP sensor? Is a product like this credible enough for such a small player? Yes it is…like a new Suzuki would be, nobody expects cutting edge engine technology from such a small car builder. Versus competition? No, too little, too late. What it means at the end of the day is that Fuji will stay a small camera manufacturer forever with marginal sales in an already overcrowded market. If nothing bad happens in this crumble area, sweet… but delicate.
Where is the X100S Kaizen? I would argue that the X100S is what brought most shooters to the Fuji camp, myself included, who were hesitant with the X100 and XPRO1 performance issues. C’mon at least give us X100S users classic chrome and spot af/metering interlocked!
just wait…
As much as I would have liked Classic Chrome & color focus peaking options for the X-Pro1, I’m not going to complain. The MF/AF adjustment is a nice and welcome feature for the X-Pro 1. For those complaining and wanting more, I ask you how many other companies would still be giving you any updates several years into a production run? I knew what the X-Pro 1 was when I purchased it. Anything extra that Fuji gives me now is just icing on the cake!
Well I would have loved to have the Classic Chrome for my X-Pro, as well, especially because I assume it’s just a color calibration/curves setting in camera when creating the jpgs and should have nothing to do with the hardware.
But then, whatever. It’s as great a camera as it was when I bought it (no, better actually thanks to the updates!)
I would still love to see the X-E2 EVF have a vertical mode like the X-T1. Of course, these additions are welcome!
Experts & Rico,
For Fuji to update its TTL technology to have accurate light metering like E-TTL or iTTL from big Canikon, including HSS, do you think a firmware update of existing X-T1 / X-e2 would be sufficient or require a next hardware X-T2, etc?
I’m considering whether to pay for X-T1 or save $400 to get X-E2 and wait …
Thanks
To me Fuji’s TTL is already more advanced than DSLR’s. Most likely Fuji uses information directly from the sensor instead of RGB meters as DSLR do. Thus the camera can take into account the dynamic range (the real one, not the JPEG engine DR utility) of the sensor. I looks like that’s the reason Fuji gets best results with built in flashes used as fill flash. I don’t know how it works with bounce flash as I don’t have one. But I doubt there are any hardware problems. It could be Fuji’s philosophy that’s differ from canikon’s one. Personally I use Cactus V6 radio transmitters. I love them a lot. Cactus provide remote manual control with lots of flashes, radio triggering, light weight and superb ergonomics. (Although quite reasonable built quality).
Talking about HSS it’s hard to be sure but it may be possible via firmware updates. HSS is not my favorite option as it uses much more flash power then standard mode. Thus maximum possible flash exposure decreases drastically. Raising sync shutter speed is much more welcome. There is one killer option one may meet on medium format cameras. That’s interchangeable lenses with leaf shutter. Fuji has already provided leaf shutter for 35mm, 28mm(WCL) and 50mm (TCL) in 35eq. If Fuji implement leaf shutter to interchangeable lenses at moderate prices, they will skyrocket over other manufactures immediately.
For wireless TTL you have to use a wireless channel. Nikon uses optical channel encrypting flash settings information in a number of rapidly following pulses (human eye can’t resolve them and thus sees it as a single pulse). Canon uses radio channel (transmitter is external or in flash body) to transfer data but the trigger is optical. Optical trigger could be IR (canon and nikon accessory) to make no influence on the picture but still requires direct visibility between the camera and the flash. For example the problems may occur when in the field the flash is behind the camera or hidden behind smth. That’s not a very rare situation. Thus radio trigger is preferable.
I see Fuji to have several ways.
1. Using Wi-Fi IF possible. That could be very complicated but potentially provide extremely wide capabilities. If the trigger will be possible too no hardware will be needed at all. Otherwise built-in flash or hot shoe accessory could be used. Result: may be possible via software update.
2. System similar to Nikon CLS (optical encrypting). Result: possible via software update.
3. Radio channel. It will require radio transmitter. Such transmitter can be carried by the body, by the flash (canon) or by hot shoe transmitter (canon and third party). The trigger could be optical via hot-shoe flash (canon and nikon) or radio (third party). Result: requires hardware update or additional hot shoe accessory.
Other ways could be possible but I see none.
Precisely this was the reason I turned my back to Fuji for shooting events and doing studio work. Flash support sucks. TTL? I don’t know, never got such a good feeling from it and though it’s not a recent system, Nikon CLS is really playing in a very different league, like most things Nikon does: it just works. The Fuji firmware doesn’t even drive the IR AF assistance in their own flash line and there is nothing in that range that comes close to some kind of professional solution. In so many cases my X-Pro1 refused to flash due to completely unclear reasons (my X100 had precisely the same disease) – I’ve lost once about one hour of expensive time in a studio because it didn’t want to ‘see’ and fire the transmitter. Just like the AF-algorithms, flashing is something that Fuji doesn’t fully master.
You should try new yongnuo yn-622. It finally enables radio remote manual control and trigger for nikon flashes as well as TTL. I’m looking forward trying it. Talking about Fuji, I had no problems with x100s/x-t1 and cactus v6. These pairs work flawlessly. Only remote manual, no TTL.
Sorry for slow responding. Thanks for taking time to explain the tech behind it and covers a wide topic of flash which I use a lot too :).
I honestly don’t use on-camera flash often but there are 2 situations where I do: (1) extreme low light (ISO is 6400) such as indoor party or outdoor walk, in which case, my flash will aim high above the subject but use flash’s catchlight panel to redirect the light forward. The other situation is mainly indoor where I again bounce flash to left/right often. In both cases, I need to be able to work quickly and so shoot flash in E-TTL is a must have. All I need to do is adjust FEC up/down depending on the condition.
In studio/controlled env, yes, I use Manual only w radio triggers.
Outdoor env portrait particularly when I travel with family and young kids, I do rely on E-TTL HSS using a single off-camera Canon speedlight + Flex-TT5. Why? again, I need to shoot fast with no setup and shoot wide open at f/2.8 -> f.4. Without HSS technology, that is impossible for curtain shutter. And that’s why I own leaf-shutter x100s and use Canon flash for it. However, the slow AF and quirkiness of x100s still cannot’ match what Canon offers. That’s why I still use Canon in important events and don’t spend $ on interchangeable x cam yet.
I’ve heard lots of good news about YN flash but until Fuji fully upgrade its flash system, any 3rd party is still a bandage for me.
And as most pointed out, Fuji’s x-sync speed of 1/125s is ridiculously slow and almost useless. If Fuji could provide what big guys do + 1/300s x-sync speed, I’m all in.
Btw, when I mean adjust FEC up/down in E-TTL, it is a very quick adjustment and take 1-2 tests to get it right.
Sorry for slow answer. You’ve replied to yourself not to my post so I had no notification and have just accidentally found this reply.
First of all Fuji has 1/180 sync speed. It’s the same as Canon’s FF 1/200. Getting up to 1/250 to canon APS-C doesn’t help a lot too. Even 1/320 won’t be a game changer for me. It all starts with at least 1/500. Leaf shutter would be still the best.
As I said HSS has a big disadvantage that a flash starts to loose power much rapidly than in the standard mode. In the end it’s almost the same than using ND filter to bring the shutter speed down to sync speed. For precise tuning one can also use a stack of circular polarizer and linear polarizer or a finished solution such as variable density ND. It allows you to tune exposure from 1 to ~4 stops without any critical IQ reduction. Further tuning of the stack drastically reduces the contrast and introduces magenta or blue color to the picture. Even though variable ND filter has similar construction, it could probably work better as it’s designed specially for this purpose. Unfortunately I haven’t tried them yet. Of course TTL+HSS is easier but it’s just an idea how to deal with Fuji if you decide to purchase it for other advantages.
For now canikon’s flash system is much more advanced than Fuji’s one. Third party manufacturers make it even more convenient. But CSC systems are more perspective thus the situation change drastically any moment. As for Fuji I’m looking forward to hearing the rumored new flash with wireless control next year.
Oh dear Fuji,
thanks for this great Kaizen Update for my X-E2. I would love to see more features like Instant AF Selection and the electronic shutter in an future update. But thanks so far!
Thanks Fuji for everything so far. Like others, I’m still hoping for electronic shutter for the X-E2. No obligation, but I can seriously say this would make me use my Fuji more, sell other gear to by more Fuji lenses.
Just read this:
The FUJIFILM X-E2 will receive a firmware update that adds:
WLAN Remote Control in conjunction with the Camera Remote application.
Interval Timer Shooting.
New “Classic Chrome” Film Simulation.
AF+MF control for all X-mount lenses.
Father fuji!
Thank you for this early announced gift ! Once again my x-e2 will make me feel like a child getting her new toy for christmus. I’ll bring out my m42 bellows for some winter macro and this time i will not have to lay flat in the snow to see the screen.
For next christmus I’d love instax printer support. If that wish comes through, ill also wish for a printer and some film from my family, and the first mini post card will go to the x-e2 firmware developers at your workshop.
Is it just me or am i the only one who can’t find the firmware v3.00 downloadfile for XE2 on the Fuji website?
ah…. yes, 18th december.Right..
I find it odd that all other X camera’s have had a recent firmware upgrade except for X100s. What happen to constant upgrades for all camera’s. I wondering if there is an ulterior motive behind this?
