DxO Support for X-TRANS: Fujifilm X100S is going to be reviewed this month

 photo dxo_zpsd5c6ee24.png

[UDPATE: DxOmark apologized for the error. No X-Trans camera will be tested. Read the update to this post here.]

DxO just announced that they will finally test their first X-Trans sensor camera this month (read here)… and it will be theĀ [shoplink 12883]Fujifilm X100S[/shoplink]. So we will soon see how well Fuji’s X-Trans sensor scores in the DXO model.

thanks Chester!

        1. We look at the same thing yet draw very different conclusions, obviously. Here’s what I see: the one and only capture of this URI by Wayback Machine is from December 5, 2013, and at that time it DID NOT contain words “This product will be tested and reviewed on October”. That completely rules out OP’s version about “forgotten” text from the fall of last year. As of “standard default line” speculation, all you have to do is to browse some of their camera database to see that this is just not the case.

My conclusion: yeah, it seems that within next 2 weeks we really might see some DxO tests done on X100s.

          1. mmmmh..I bought x – e1 (sold) , X100S (sold) , XPro1 (sold) ..and now I have x – t1 … without ever saw the score DxOMark ..now …. I’m curious to see them

          2. Agree, this is rather crazy choice of timing and particular model for DxOMark… However, that might mean we’ll see an X-Trans support in their RAW converter.

          3. Bummer. “This indication was not accurate and has now been removed, since tests on X-trans sensors are still not planned. Our apologies for this inconsistency, and thank you for your understanding.”

  1. Now, okay, they managed to create a test method for X-Trans sensors but how will it be comparable to the test for sensors with Bayer CFA ?

    1. If true, than they needed just a little more time to get there things right, another indication it’s true.

  2. Seriously why not do the journalistic thing and drop them an email and ask if they plan to support X-trans? Heck even a tweet would do. I know it stops being a ‘rumour’ then, but it seems pointless to speculate about something like this.

    1. mmhh I think they are going to test..nothing.

      http://forum.dxomark.com/index.php/topic,3080.0.html

“The reason why we do not support X-trans sensors is quite simple: these sensors are worked differently than the typical Bayer sensor. DxOMark modeled its laboratories around this model for its procedures, protocols, tests and evaluations. “….”, for the moment it is unfortunately not in our plans”

    2. actually I didn’t listed it as a rumor, but as a news, since they announced at their official site that an X100S review is coming this month.

  3. What is strange is they did not even test XA1 and there was no excuse not to test that camera as it features a normal sensor. In any case I expect the results to be very good, after all, in the beginning, every XE/XA/XT/X100s camera features the same 16MP Sony sensor that DXO tested countless times in other cameras. With a twist also known as XTrans plus whatever other tweaks Fuji does to that Sony sensor and the cooking that Fuji does to its Raw files (some tweaks are done by every manufacturer, otherwise that same old 16MP Sony sensor would have tested exactly the same in every camera, and it does not)… The bottom line is I cannot see it test worse than other cameras with such a sensor, which there is a long list of starting with Nikon D7000, Sony NEX5n, Pentax from couple years ago, etc…. etc..
I hope to see better results though. I only care about DR and Low Light score, could care less about the other two scores and overall score.

      1. What do you mean, my understanding is that all sensors in Fuji Xtrans cameras are Sony 16MP sensors that Fuji then tweaks with ‘Xtransing’ them.

        1. It’s the same Sony 16mp sensor used in the nikon d7000. Fuji then add their xtrans colour aray filter instead of the standard bayer filter which is what everyone use

  4. I remind DXOs promise regarding x-a1 test:

    from http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Fujifilm/X-A1
    from Emilie_DxOMark on 28.1.2013:
“Fuji X A1 will be reviewed soon. You will have to wait January for sensor results, and maybe February for the first lenses results.”

…and reality check on 15.10.2014: X-A1 was still not tested by DXO

    now believe something from DXO……

  5. I’m confused – I was under the impression that the X100S has the same X-Trans sensor as the X-E2, the X-T1, the X100T etc.

Why would the new DxO support be only for the X100S if these cameras share the same sensor?

    1. Exactly the same as why they test the various cameras that all use the same Sony sensor (Nikon D7100 etc). Comes down to software also I believe

  6. I think it’s too risky to declare DxO’s support for X-Trans and I’m afraid that’s not for real. Just because they will test a Fujifilm camera using X-trans sensor doesn’t mean they will necessarily support RAW files conversion and release camera/lens modules for it within their DxO Optics Pro software.
I’d like to be wrong and see them doing it at last but they don’t show any plans for it in their site so far, and they use to announce future modules well in advance.

  7. DxO OP 9 came out 10/23 of last year and 8 came out 10/24 of the year before. I wonder if Fuji X support will be the big enhancement for version 10.

  8. I Hope they’ll review it! Those scores actually counts as selling point for camera companies. I’m sure things will get better for us customers, as Fujifilm must do his best to keep up with competition instead of recycling the same sensors from 3 years.

    1. If you go to their site and check for the planned future modules you will se no indication about it.

I’d appreciate them to do it because I use the software for a long time and I didn’t upgrade to version 9 due to the reasons they used to justify their lack of X-Trans support.

  9. In other systems this old Sony sensor scored around 80. Also the subscores where not really spectacular. Not even close to any of the recent FF sensors

  10. If DXO provides raw support for X-Trans sensor files and tests the X100s, it will likely be more of a test of how well DXO converts the files, not how good the files are.

Personally, I would be far more interested if Fuji were to announce that they are finally going to release their own bare-bones raw converter. Sadly, they don’t seem to care, which is shocking.

  11. That ‘One-Liner’ saying a test is coming (depicted above) is missing from DXO’s Site.

I hope they test the X-Trans Technology so we can see how it compares, but the last test they did was the Nikon D810 on 2014-06-26 and the rest (more recent) have been “Previews”. Previously they have said they will not test non-Bayer Sensors.

Indeed they only “News” at DXO was either that they got to the GH4, or that the iPhone6 has the “Best” Camera of all (even compared to the Nokia 1020, except in low light). Neat stuff, but not for Fuji Fans.

    1. The DxO benchmarking is used by quite a lot of instances, from DPReview till the photo press. They are fully credible and as far as I know they are also one of the only true neutral reference benchmarks available. Unless you want to believe what bloggers write using coloured balls & flowers. If the Fuji scores will not be spectacular – what expect, around 80 – the myth will be fully over that this system is so much better than what Pro-gear & FF sensors do. I’ve never believed that owning both.
