The mysterious Super-Bokeh lens? Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD! (for about $1400/$1500)

index

You might remember that I told you about a creamy-dreamy bokeh XF lens with STF technology similar to Sony/Minolta’s STF (Smooth Transition Focus). As many of you, I also thought that the hottest candidate for such a lens is the XF 90mm f/2 lens.

But that’s wrong, at least according to 2 anonymous sources (both with nick-name, thanks for sharing). The source said:

“The new superbokeh lens will be Fujinon 56mm.”

The second source shared some more details and said:

“Fujinon XF 56mm 1.2 R APD: Fuji nanotechnology apodizing filter produces smoother bokeh. $1400-1500 US retail.”

The classic XF 56mm [shoplink 21554]is available for $999[/shoplink].

  1. Make sense imo less production and R&D costs , they can use the 56 design prodcution jsut maybe one or two steps more in production…..

    Sadly i was hoping for a 90 2 or 1.8……little bummer….somaybe the 90 f2 is then a 135 f4 dof 35 mm equivalent with 1:1 macro capabilites….would be awesome;)

Hopefully we will get a new updated lens roadmap and some new announcement of upcoming lens at/on photokina from fuji! 😉

And especially that they announce something some new flashes or an introduction of a competitve flash system…this is one big big empty slot within the fuji system beside low flash sync of 1/180 and shutter speed limit of1/4000 in the focal plane x cams (with interchangeae lens)….

    1. is there really 2 stops difference in DOF between aps-c and FF?
i’m just asking, i don’t know the math behind it and i’ve never had the occasion to use a FF camera 🙂
btw, it’s strange to me that fuji starts to sell 2 versions of the same lens.. unless they are making a new line of no compromise lenses! (and the new 35mm would fit in that too)

  2. Hmm doesn’t sound right, two versions of the same lens and aperture? I would of thought they would update the current design and release it for the same price =/

  3. They could have just added a couple more aperture blades .. ? Bokeh seems smooth at F1.2, just not (always) when stopped down. But i don’t own one. And two anonymous sources don’t really inspire confidence just yet anyway.

    1. Yeah for such an expensive lens designed for shallow DOF work, cheaping out on the aperture blades (so few, and non-rounded) was a mistake I think.

    2. The lens design has much more to do with bokeh than the “blades”. Just compare the same focal lengths with different designs , Like sonnar vs Plannar… . It is optical corrections (even light fall off) that defines the out of focus image render.

      1. Yes, but once you’ve got that covered .. and it seems they do at F1.2, the stopped-down performance needs to maintain that look by keep the aperture as round as possible. It isn’t.

But of course if the wide-open performance can be improved to begin with (and i’m sure it can), then huray for that. Always good to have another special option. Though it might also be really annoying if you can only afford the what is then the ‘basic’ version. ^.^

  4. I hope the T stop won’t go any further than 2 and in theory and apodizing filter produces sharper image ( not just the bokeh ). I hope they do one with a 35 f1 design…

  5. Seems to me to make more sense financially to develop a modified version of an existing lens for such a niche product. Also the 85mm equivalent seems better suited to likely usage than a 135mm equivalent. And an added bonus is that it removes a cause of possible delays to the coming 90mm lens.

  6. Because the current 56mm has quite a problem with the bokeh! Haha, nah, I can’t complain about progress of course, just kind of funny when these news are about a bokeh monster.

    1. F1.2 is awesome, and it is sharp! As for the bokeh though i’d give it a 8/10, which is great, but i’d rate the Nikkor AF-S 58mm F1.4 G Nano at 9/10.

      1. Agree i would give 10/10 for bokeh to the zeiss 55 1.4 otus and zeiss 135 apo zf2….but this comes for a certain price tag…;)

          1. Yeah and I guess the upcoming Zeiss Otus 85 1.4 shown/launched at/on photokina for ZE and ZF2 mount will be THE BEST LENS for BOKEH ever been built!! Better than the already mentioned lens and the Sony Zeiss ZA 135 1.8 which has less pleasant bokeh than the Zeiss APO 135 f2 ZE/ZF2 despite 0.2 bigger aperture because it has mor loCAs and the APO is perfectly corrected (last two or three percents). ZA only when AF and Sony mount needed, ZF2 more future proof…..;)

Sorry for going off-topic…but these are gorgeous lens, hopefully fujis 135mm equivalent will be stunning and performing as theyre doing….;)

    1. The Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIS cost $700 – is Manual Focus (ais), has poor contrast wide open is brilliantly sharp in the center, and not quite so in the corners it has severe corner shading and distortion; Wide open it has a sort of glow which can be great or a pain depending on what you want/need.
… Another $200 for AF and better optics is not so unreasonnable for the standard XF-56mm another $500 for the second version is indeed more questionnable, but at least you (may ? – it’s still a rumor) have a choice.

      1. Agree. All I want to say is that small cameras that want deliver comparable IQ to todays FF need higher technical efforts to get there what shows in price. That’s where the X-System has it’s limits. IMHO Fuji made a marketing mistake with this ‘FF-IQ from an APS-C-system’ approach. I don’t know whether smallness and weight make up for comparable prices to FF, will see. Still, Fuji should stand alone, leave the FF-things to the FF crowd and let the X-trans and SMALL lenses speak for itself since Fuji cameras obviously are excellent in its own kind.

        1. I hear what you say and agree. It is fair to say that Fuji is not really cheap, but all things being equal for the high quality lenses they manufacture their prices are not silly. And also every now and again they run fairly impressive rebate campains.

It is just hard to resist to the syrens of new gear being announced :))

I started off with and XE-1 with 18-55 6 months ago when the body was almost free, I am just eagerly waiting for an XT-1 with a 56mm bundled at a very good price 🙂 In the meantime selling my Nikon gear to build up the cash 😉

    2. Sorry, but nope. I gave up my decades with Nikon pro bodies and glass for the weight and bulk savings – not the cost factor.

My guess is that perhaps Fuji has a batch of test-bed 56s that are trying out newer tech in the field where it matters. Think Fuji will send photogs out into the field with a 90mm that doesn’t exist (for public consumption) yet? Hardly. We’ll see something in the next portrait prime that is the result of whatever rumor this comes from.

Meanwhile, I’ll keep enjoying my 56 and not missing the weight and bulk of my D700/800 and 85/1.4

  7. I’m eager to see side by side image comparisons. What I’ve seen coming out of the current Fuji 56mm already looks sensational: very “3D” and pleasing. Can the improvement justify the $500 price hike? We’ll see. But as a reference point, there’s a trend emerging. The M43 competitor from Panasonic-“Leica” already costs more than this rumored “bokeh monster.” And all cost and weigh significantly less than the Canon 85mm f/1.2L.

    1. Then again (and I think more likely): this is false or incorrect or outdated info. The current Fuji 56mm already is a “bokeh monster.” 🙂

      1. in the reviews I’ve read, the only thing that wasn’t “perfect” about the 56 was the bokeh… a nice, pleasing bokeh, but not perfect.

Maybe Fuji is just going to make this lens, the perfect XF lens.

        1. Feeding you misinformation doesn’t sound right to me, since it sort of disparages the current lens, even though it also encourages us to look again at the 56 and defend it. Coincidentally, before this rumor, I happened to be looking at lots of online samples from the current lens and was blown away. But the quest to make a perfect lens is an honorable one. Leica did it recently, and Fuji seems to get inspiration there. I hope they do it, and at that price.

Maybe this version is optimized for the organic sensor! 😉

          Would they announce at Photokina?

What do you think the biggest “wow” from Fuji will be at this show? Or all Kaizen?

          1. XPro2 (even a peek) would be great.

Given the frequency and stature of this event, it seems like they’d want to unveil something really big. The camera refreshes are nice, maybe even great, but they’re just that: refreshes. A big, show stealing headliner seems appropriate.

But maybe that was to have been the organic sensor.

The XPro2 will no doubt have the new HVF, hybrid pixel auto focus. But it seems like they could do that now, so are holding out for something else.

Every other similar vintage X camera has seen hardware upgrades to EVF, autofocus, buffer, buttons, etc. Why are they neglecting the flagship, I wonder.

          2. yes, they could release the X-PRO2 now… but if they don’t, then this means that Fuji has something special and unexpected in mind for the X-PRO2. Something worth to wait until 2015!

          3. That’s exactly the same question I make to sources 😉

As soon as I hear the answer, I’ll share it

          4. 🙂 I know. This is one of my favorite sites for that very reason! I was being rhetorical. The XPro will be the first organic sensor Fuji, of course! 🙂

    1. What are you afraid of. Fuji is NOT going to release such lens.
The 56mm is already Fuji’s best lens available. Next to that they are still working on their lens roadmap.

This rumor is just utter BS.

        1. Indeed, but it sounds like the x-t1 update rumour.
That didn’t appear to be right too.

I can sit in two star bucks make two hotmail accounts and sent in a rumor to make it more believable.

Nay I can’t say I have any faith in this rumor either.

    2. For all the gushing reviews, I really disliked the look of the bokeh on the existing 56m. Disliked enough that I’d never have bought it. I welcome this new lens.

  8. This rumor is b.s., there is no way Fuji would release a new 56mm so soon when the “old” 56mm was released only 6 months ago. This would completely cannibalise the previous model and goes against the Fuji mindset. Not to mention the price as well for the ‘super bokeh’ edition.

    1. Except that if it is an STF lens it would have a lot of aspects that would make it a bad general use lens, so it really wouldn’t steal from the same market.

    2. @mikemgee:disqus looking like an idiot now that the rumor was actually 100% correct. Never pretend to be the smartest ass when you don’t know nothing about Fuji’s mindset and operation. ha!
