There is a movie coming up called “Hector and the Search for Happiness”. It’s about a psychiatrist that changes his life and searches the globe to find the secret of happiness. Now guess what his travel camera is? Yes, the X100S will go with him all the way, and you can also see it in the trailer at 1:28 or in this image here.
This is definitely a masterpiece… I mean the X100S ;-). I don’t know if the movie is good too, but I have a good reason to watch it ones it’s out here in Europe.
Now, X100/S owners, what is your experience when you travel with it?

It’s quite a good movie. Had the chance to see it in a Sneak Preview. Makes you think about life and in the meantime is good for some laughs. I love to take my X100s with me for travel like Hector. Will be on honeymoon from next week on so I leave my trusty X100s to my wife and put my X-E2 with 18-55, Samyang 12, Canon 50 1.4 and a Gorillapod into a small bag that used to carry my DSLR and 1 lens. Awesome to have everything with you with such a small footprint (although I really love how the limits of the X100s force me to be extremely creative).
For travel the X100s would be ideal… if I could afford it… need to save money for the 90mm F2 :D!
Meanwhile I have to stick with the EOS M and 22mm f2 :3
Get a used X100 man, nothing wrong with it after FW updates! 🙂
So very true. I got one a few months back (knowing that the FW updates have truly sorted it out) and it’s a little gem. The way I saw it was half the price of the 23mm with a free camera body attached!
Haha indeed, and some body it is, not to mention its OVF(!). This is exactly the same logic that i ended up with, and indeed turns out it’s solid logic. 😉
I wouldn’t go as far as to say “nothing“, but it has certainly come a long way.
Nothing doesn’t exist, everything is relative. As a creative tool that does what it needs to and beyond so affordable, yes i’d say nothing.
get the balck stealthy ricoh GR you dont need the tcl or wcl additionally…..it is the toughest competitior for the x100s an the 28mm FL is wider and fits better genrally (especiaally for me) because you can always crop if needed to 35mm…..the other way uncropping from 35 to 28 is not possible….
just my 2 cents….it is the most underrated camera on the market imo……!!!!
It’s a good camera but I really like having a viewfinder.
you can buy one easily and attach him if it is required or needed….the new Ricoh GR /next spirng) will be much better and will have an ovf or evf included for sure…
I’ve always found those attachments to be unwieldy or awkward like the nikon V3.
You must have never really used one. A nice metal (or plastic, your choice) 28mm OVF from Voigtlander is pretty, bright, and a pleasure to use.
This claim by many people that it would be awkward is just a false preconception in reality.
Also the Ricoh GR both lens and sensor are sensational. (yes, in this case that is the correct superlative!)
The very best OVFs are the ones from Zeiss, but of course you’d have to dig deep in your pockets. But just like manual lenses, last a lifetime.
Or I just prefer a different ergonomic than other people. Also I have grown to prefer an EVF and I use much longer focal lengths in general so those kinds of OVFs are not very useful to me.
Lol, what kind of tele are you going to put on the GR, the “It’s a good camera but I really like having a viewfinder” comment was surely referring to. It really isn’t such a ‘different ergonomic’ as people make it out to be from merely its appearance. But yes obviously, neither is perfect.
When I was talking about the optional viewfinders I went to speaking more broadly rather than specifically to the GR.
Yes, clearly. 😉
High Patrick, anything on the radar yet for photokina
Elia Locardi will be one of the X-Shooters at Photokina.
X30, maybe X100T… I haven’t heard of anything else until now
This movie looks sensational. I’ll be first through the door when it arrives in Australia! By the I have used my Fuji X100 for over two years of travel through Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and China. It is also my ‘daily traveller’ at home here in Australia for street photography, landscapes and general stuff. During the same time I’ve had a Nikon D60, Nikon D7000 (now sold) and have bought a new X-E2. The X100 in it’s brown leather 1/2 case sees the most use. People are all to happy to pose for me when I point the inconspicuous little camera in their direction. I love it!
Definitely looks like a fun movie. I would reserve the word sensational for other things though, don’t wanna run out of superlatives when you need one.
Unfortunately, an ever increasing number of people doesn’t feel hindered by such reservations. Ever noticed how something announced as “[whatever superlative] [whatever subject] ever!” invariably fails to make true on its promise?
The X100s is definitely a wonderful travel camera. The only tiny problem is that when you travel you often don’t have the time to find the right spot for a specific shot and that’s when a zoom comes in pretty handy.
But having a fixed focal length also has it’s advantages! and the converters bring extra versatility.
A must, absolutely!
I haven’t shot with anything other than a Fuji X100 since March 2011 (my SLR kit remains in the cupboard).
Got the WCL in 2012, and upgraded to the X100S in 2013. I found the portability, as well as the constraints of the 28mm FOV, absolutely liberating, So much so that I pared my photography down further by choosing to shoot only in black and white, and landscape orientation, for the past 18 months.
I’ve shot weddings, travel and street with it and never looked for anything else.
Long live ‘less is more’.
Less is more??? I get what you are saying, but any time someone says that my reaction is ‘you’re the problem, not the gear’. The fact is , less is NOT more….you just lack the vision and are easily overwhelmed with too many options. More gear = more options, to think otherwise is just to justify your own shortcomings:)
Less can be more for someone who doesn’t “need” more. He said he’s shot weddings, travel and street. Notice that he didn’t say sports, astro-photography, architecture, and macro.
I think limiting your gear can be liberating no matter what you like to shoot. Certain subjects might require you to work your tools harder and be more creative to fit the task and get results, but the end result will be no less liberating.
Let’s take an extreme example for the sake of discussion: you like to shoot sports events, and you limit yourself to an X100S. (If the photojournalist Dan Chung can cover the Olympics with an iPhone, what I’m describing isn’t such a stretch.)
Now obviously you’ll be forced to get closer to your subjects. So you’ll end up focusing on sports where you can do this. Perhaps shooting local games instead of stadiums. Or blagging for access to the VIP pits.
You may find yourself crawling under the ref’s chair to get that shot of the volleyball net from below. Or climbing walls for interesting angles, because you can’t fake closeness anymore. Or following sportspeople off the pitch, to catch them in unguarded moments where you can get close, instead of being a permanent spectator.
You might end up tracking your subjects because the X100S autofocus isn’t too hot. Using flash (where allowed) to get things sharper and kill unwanted backgrounds because you can’t do so with bokeh. Etc. etc.
Of course all this is more work than just falling back into the comfort zone of long-lens, sit-close-to-the-action. And you won’t get results immediately, for sure.
But when you do, your sports photos won’t look like everyone else’s. You will have shattered all the norms you know and built your own approach to task at hand. And that’s what making interesting art is about.
Interesting arguments there !
Technically, yes. More gear equals more options. But the real issue behind “less is more” relates to focus: by having only a single lens (X100s), the photographer is forced to focus on the essential to take the shot. No need to waste time over “should I get the 35mm 2.0 or the 50mm 1.4?” No moments of “not now, I can’t/won’t take that heavy bag full of goodies with me; I’m only going out for a quick stroll.” Less is more means more opportunities, more focus, more being there, more choices (not gear related!), more contact.
Also, TV people use it in real life like Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead:

Or is it the X-100?
Still with the X100 here too. It’s handy but sturdy and sooc jpgs have been a marvel since day 1.
Hollywood likes X100s or Fuji likes Hollywood?
I guess there is a word for it: Product placement. The fact that the x100s looks elegant and is rather unobstrusive helps a lot here…
Looks like a great movie! Can’t wait to see it.
Also good to see the guy who portrays “Scottie” in the new Star Trek movies in another role.
He is in many roles. But yep. ME TOO.
Fuji X100s = happiness !!!! Sounds right to me
Just ordered yesterday a new Fuji X100s:) Really want to discover Fuji’s world and don’t want to wait the new Fuji X100t which would be available January 2015 maybe in France?!
Great camera in a movie with one of my favorite actors, Simon Pegg. Should win best picture 😉
Sent my X-Pro 1 in to repair the LCD screen, assuming Fuji would honour its word of turning around repairs in a week (per Fuji’s documentation). It has now been over two weeks, they haven’t even looked at it, and they are demanding $40 to return the camera before I go on vacation in a week and a half, irrespective of whether they do the work or not.
If they don’t get the camera back to me by next Monday, and it hasn’t been repaired, they will be losing another customer because their customer service in Canada sucks.
The sales guy who I was dealing with is also waiting for them to return his X-pro 1, which he sent in via express mail over a month ago – they haven’t even done any work on his camera yet either.
I’m familiar with Fujifilm customer service in Europe and they are faster than the Canon CPS.
+1
They fixed the light leaking issue on the X-T1 in a week, great!
Hahaha… Fuji paid big bucks for that. Hollywood would care less otherwise.
Take mine with me everyday. Simply love it.
ooh am more interested in dat case and strap! anyone knows?
Looks like the case made by Fuji (with the top flap removed), the LC-X100S
Hollywood knows it…? This isn’t a Hollywood movie, hell….this isn’t even an American movie.
