One source shared a surprising rumor (and correction) on the 4K camera rumor we posted three days ago. He says the camera displayed last year (image on top) will NOT(!) be announced as final production camera at the NAB show in April. Apparently Sony will wait a couple of months more before to launch any 4K in a DSLR looking package. He confirmed that Sony will definitely launch 4K (photocamera styled) cameras but for reasons he couldn’t mention Sony will not be able to launch them in April!
One more thing: He said that Sony will lbirng a couple of “minor” news at the NAB show event in April: evolutionary improvements like S-Log3, ACES color space and firmware upgrades to Cinealta. There will be a new camcorder too but definitely no 4K DSLR styled camera yet.

Important: A77 successor is confirmed by many many trusted and anonymous sources. Launch within the next 2-3 months!

Well, the first sony camera will be phone.
unnecessary filming cameras. I would have liked something cool with bayonet A
Hi Andrea – is that 2-3 months until the a77ii is actually in the stores, or just until it’s announced?
Announcement. In Stock June-July.
Thanks – just in time for the summer holidays…
Plan for late October.
Late October 2015….
Hopefully that will be for the a99 II.
This 4k beast has been shown already at Photokina 2012 in a closed show case as a mockup…
any hints what kind of the camcorder will be announce? VG? FS? the hexagon prototype? or?
Admin, any SR2-5 rumors about RX cam? I would like a APSC or 1inch with fast optics 🙂
.. but I’m not reading SAR for video rumours. I’m a photographer like 95% of your readers. So what news is a video camera for me? Not much to be honest.
Developing video cams is no way to evolve on the still photography business by the way. Amazingly Sony and Panasonic think it is.
Actually Sony made two separate line with E-mount camera with the former NEX for still photography an VG and FS for video.
video on their still camera is just a feature for daily video and kind of crippled for a pro work (based on SAR comments) unlike what Panasonic do with their camera. Sony’s main focus is still photos for Alphas.
Of course this one is a video cam in disguise in a DSLR body an target a very small niche market but it’s still interesting to look at it since it give us a hint of what the Hybrid E/A-mount could be with the FZ-mount.
some readers point out the flange distance of the FZ is deeper that the E-mount one (mix information: some says it’s the same) but it’s so large that Sony could make an adaptator where the E-mount recess of 1mm from the outer plane.
The FZ mount is a kind of electronic hook (but still a mount since there is FZ lenses) that allow you to put virtually any mount available and that’s why this camera could be a very good news for Alphas (read E & A-mount) shooters.
Sony’s pro site states that FZ is 19mm, e mount is listed by multiple source at 18mm.
I know, but I’m more interested by the concept behind the FZ mount than the actual caracteristic of the mount.
Sony came with the idea of camera “without” mount so you can put whatever you need.
the rumored hybrid cam could use the idea of a mountless cam to unify the 2 mounts. And if Sony is bold enough they could just produce a complete line of “mountless” cam (different body size and shape) leaving to their customers the freedom to choose the mount regarding their lenses selection.
It could be a simple and elegant solution and if it’s well think trough it could even be futureproof.
Im 55% video and 45% photo. No,, Im 100% photo and 100% video. =)
If Sony and Panasonic are convinced that improved video performance is desired by the public, then improved video is what we will get. After all, Sony and Panasonic are the major innovators in camera technology.
I seriously doubt if ANY new camera will emerge without improved video. Panasonic has just thrown down the gauntlet, the others will now play catch-up.
When a rumor about A77 II spec’s, even if it is SR1, from now on people want spec’s about the upcoming A77 II, thanks.
working on that!
If the delay is because of Sony still polishing codec, software and storage, it is a wise decision. 4K cameras without a proper codec and bitrate is merely a trick to lure beginners and amateurs to belive they are buying something awesome. A trick that works every time, simple numbers for simple people. Needless to say, few amateurs have the hardware or the time/patience needed to work with 4K material. That’s why I think a lot of these new consumer 4K cameras will be bought by average joes who will use them in 1080 anyway. The 4K badge is only for bragging rights.
Sony didn’t delay anything. Everything is a rumor. Funny how new rumors are made up to justify the rumors that don’t materialize..
Funny how people fail to reply to the correct post.
I think you’re wrong, even it it’s SR1…its….oops…wrong post. 😉
Now A77 is next 2-3 months instead of March…lol..poor A-mount
+1 Yes, poor A mount !
I expect Sony was a bit confused on exactly what tech to use in the camera. So that has delayed the camera, at least based on rumors. Do you use existing SLT tech, with the improved mirror type, use dual sensor PDF, with a separate DPF like the A99, use the A6000 on sensor PDF with CDF. Since the 7-levels cameras do not come out often it might be worth slipping the camera a 1/2 a year to get the latest breakthrough tech into it. Or maybe Sony tried the A6000 tech and had issues getting the A-mount screw drive lenses to work right and backed up to the old tech, which caused a delay.
As far as 4K goes, Sony does have camcorders with 4K, so all is not lost if that is the goal. Given the storage capacity needed for good 4K, you would almost need a separate storage device and camera rig set-up which removes a lot of the advantages of having the SLR body style.
(thumbs up admin)
about the news:
damn. i want to 4k my cat while playing around… now i must wait.
HAHA, funny!! Made me laugh. But unfortunately for most users on this site who claim they need to take clean ISO pics at ISO200000000 and have lightning fast AF in pitch black usually only take pics of their cats.
I just don’t care about that kind of information. Where are the A mount lenses ? The so-called 400mm F4 project ? A 300mm F4 ? A 100mm macro SSM ? A 400mm F2,8 ? A new A mont FF body ?
Ditto
My concern is that there doesn’t seem to be any news on any other Sony a-mount lenses. Yes we hear about Sigma but they are constantly delayed. Now after chatting to a Sony guy at The Photography Show – I know there is no A99 successor on the roadmap either. Yes Sony is talking about a 4k DSLR but I’m not really interested in that. I would also like to see an up-to-date or at least a refresh of the Sony FF a mount camera.
What Sony guy? Sony weren’t at The Photography Show.
Correct they weren’t but they had a sales rep at the London Camera Exchange. I spoke to him about the a77 successor. He confirmed yes they will release a77 successor this year (no timescales) and he also confirmed that there was no a99 successor on the road map he has seen.
If this is the year of the A-mount then I dread to think what next year will be like when it isn’t!
It looks like batman
Admin, is this déjà vu? We went back and forth on this A77 release error exactly one year ago. I reported numerous times that the release back then (same time) was in error. You went ahead and gave it high rumor scores multiple times, and every time I reported that a release was not forthcoming. I even went so far as to report that the plant had yet to be tooled. This went on after continuous releases of rumored “delays.” After months of this back and forth, to get your attention I started claiming A-mount is dead, dead, dead. It’s now been more than a year since our first back and forth on this and here we go again. Lessons?
Do you have inside info Dan? I just want to know about a new FF a mount. Is that coming any time soon or am I switching to Canon or nikon? Lol
Again ditto here.
I’ve said this several times. My firm consults to bring human assets to workforce projects. Rather than go through all the detail agsin, the dumbed down version is that we bring manpower to manufacturing in locations serviced by branding companies. I literally walked the facility upon which the generation A77 had been tooled and manufactered at the same time that Admin was releasing rumors last year that a new version was going to be announced. Other than security, the operation was closed. These operation do not go on all year long. Once a run is complete, to preserve costs, goods are moved to warehousing and shipping pipelines. It is necessary to also prepare for other plant operations and future tooling I actually wished that this was not the case, we need the business. I am not aware of any orders to tool any operation facility for any order remotely detailing the A77 replacement. However, we do not know anything about mainland operations.
I’m not switching, but stacking up on lenses. Crazy good deals on A-mount stuff as people are switching to A7/A7R. Just got me a 28mm/2.0 and I’ve been hunting for one for ages!
My point exactly.
SONY has been very consistent with launch dates (and with my own info from within the local SONY guys) and I was just laughing last year when there was talk of multiple A-mount bodies in early 2014. There will be no A-mount bodies until summer.
Regards,
B’
I know rumors are rumors but are you saying that there will be A mount bodies this year? 😉
As far as my third-hand rumours go, yes.
Full frame?
No new A-mount camera for me during my holiday in Sep. Maybe get the A6000 for time lapse if I need to. Got to depends on my A850, not going to get A99 when news of new A-mount is on the horizon. 😛
News – no, rumors – yes, actual cameras – hmm…not for a while.
That thing makes the Hasselblad/a99 look pretty… MAKE IT STOP!
A) It’s a prototype.
B) Video pros tend not to care how a camera looks so much as features, output & ergonomics.
C) The dual shoes, larger size for more battery life and FZ mount for a breadth of lenses > worthless curves
Sony will not be able to release the camera in April.. BECAUSE IT WAS A BAD RUMOR and was not planned for April. THAT’s WHY Author should stop believing his/her own hype. It would be silly to release an A77 and updated FF camera that close to each other.. It cannibalizes the PR from the announcement. So you can’t be SR5 on an A77 update in Spring and then reasonably consider a rumor of another flagship level camera being announced in the same 60 day period.
Yes, Sony would never announce & release two cameras simultaneously.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/10/16/sony-announces-first-full-frame-mirrorless-ilc-cameras-a7-and-a7r
Two variations of the same release.. which by the way cover each others weakness well. A7 same MP as all previous Sony FF and A7R slow AF. And released going into the Holiday buying season. Totally different thing that announcing a an A77 II and a A99 II (A99r) at the same time and blowing all your PR in the first half of the year. There are some basic concepts in marketing that while people may not think of them, should make sense when pointed out. There are times multiple releases can magnify and times when they cannibalize PR and Publication coverage. Right now the A6000 needs its space, because it is a pretty cool device, then we can bring on an important A-mount. We might even see the A59 APC and the A77 II come out at the same time. Because the yearly camera is not a PR leader usually.
The rumored 4k RAW video camera is not the successor to the a99, it’s a new camera model. The rumor has been 4k dslr-style video camera (possibly akin to the Canon 1d-C) at NAB and then a77 a month later ( the timing rumors have ping-ponged around). These two cameras in no way compete with one another, feature-wise or from a marketing perspective.
Although one could make the argument that the a77 & a99 are as complementary as the a7 / a7r (high speed & best IQ). The a99 isn’t really due for an upgrade. Only the a77 is getting long-in-the-tooth because of the old hot shoe and high ISO performance.
My completely speculative prediction: a77 II announcement at end of October, a99 II a year later with stacked sensor.
Yes but remember, this is “the year of the A mount” 😉
So Said SAR.. when did Sony say that? Never…Love he we get upset with Sony because SAR didn’t get it right.
Chill. Nobody is upset here but maybe you. I couldn’t care less if or when they release this Frankenstein camera. Maybe the delay was due to having to perfect their time machine to go back to 1988 to grab up all those metal extending antennas?? Before you blow a gasket, relax. That was another juvenile joke. Just like my year of the a mount comment.
What a joke. Admin waits FOREVER before posting a rumor to be sure it’s relatively accurate and…then posts it as SR5. One day later, the rumor changes dramatically.
What is the point of this??! Either post them as SR2 as you get them or don’t post anything. It’s ridiculous to post SR5 if they constantly change!
What are you talking about? What crawled up inside you and died?
Stop reading them then………
You do know what the word “rumor” means right?
You can always wait to read the review on dpreview if you want accurate info.
The A99 incremental upgrade/replacement (or whatever you want to call it) will be including all of the above features. Its definitely not a hybrid like the 2012 mock-up, and it isn’t going to be announced until Photokina 2014.
I doubt we’ll hear anything reliable about the A77 replacement until June.
There will NOT be an A77II as there will not be an A77 replacement at all (no more APS-C A-mount cameras). There will, however, be an A99 replacement (called the A99II) in addition to this rumored 4k E/A camera (which will be called the ‘Alpha 1’).
I know this for a fact, not a rumor. Time will prove me correct.
I really like the idea of the A-Mount going 100% Full Frame. Sony could easily design, and manufacture a entry level 16 to 20mp Full Frame camera for under $1000.00.
Say you’re correct “Hans”. When should we expect this new full frame? I really want to upgrade from my 77 but don’t want to get the 99 and have something way better come out a month later. Lol
That’s the mock-up for the Alpha 1. Its Sony’s DSLR “HALO” A-Mount camera, and it will not use other mounts.
The newest prototype looks like the A99 with a built-in battery grip.
Makes me wonder if sony is going to take on the Canon 1D and Nikon D3/4 series of cameras…..
