If you ever wanted to know what how phase and contrast detection AF works than check this out the well made video made by Tim and Tuki from Sonylearntv. It explains you in easy words why the A6000 is faster the previous NEX cameras.
P.S.: Tim and Tuki, Funny name combination 😉

Could someone tell me what language they are speaking and what they are saying?
you do not understand English?
Thank you. I enjoyed the demo.
vietnamese
One speaks Klingon while the other one keep saying “klaatu barada nikto”…. LMFAO
the guy on the left is from New Zealand,
the other guy is probably from a cold Nordic area (Sweden maybe) but sounds like he has been in New Zealand for a while.
For someone who doesn’t understand spoken english…you seem to write well…
First time test with shallow dof, thank you !!!!
Actually, Andrea, it doesn’t explain why the A6000 focuses faster than the NEX-6. Both have hybrid AF.
+1
Why was my original comment deleted? My comment was not offensive. I simply stated that the point of the video was not to explain why the a6000 focuses faster than the nex-6. The a6000 focuses faster because it has more af points than the nex-6 (179 vs 99)

If it was a pro Canon, there would be a setting for how long the camera should wait before re aquire focus. Now it came out as slow. ..
Any idea how long we’ll have to wait for a full frame E-mount camera with AF performance comparable to A6000? Is the larger sensor size going to be a disadvantage here (AF points only in the center like A99) or does it not matter anymore with mirrorless?
Does anyone know why SLT and DSLR cameras only have AF points in the center? Is it a technical issue or do manufaturers actually think their customers should always but the motiv in the middle?
Question of costs, it seems to me. If you can only have a limited amount of AF points, I’d rather have them concentrated around the center – the critical area, where like 95% of the key motives will reside. From what I’ve seen, points normally cover the rule-of-thirds area, that’s about what you need. Focus and recompose helps for the rest.
Because the traditional PDAF sensor and mirror is much smaller than the imaging sensor / OVF mirror
this makes sense, thanks
I think that will not happen, a FF for E-mount – Sony already has what they deem to be the NEX7 update the A7/r – the a6000 is the NEX6 update which is intended for beginners and a bit more advanced users – the very fact that they do not have any Fast Zooms like a 24-70mm F2.8 or a 70-200mm F2.8 proves that point – they do not see NEX3/5/6 a6000 users buying many additional lenses – so therefore the limited selection –
The other point is that the larger the sensor the larger the lenses – so take the kit lens of the A7/r for example – it is huge – it is larger and heavier than the 70-100mm F2.8 lens from Panasonic for M43 –
So as attractive as it may sound to have a FF sensor in a small body it is just not practical – due to lens size and weight – for example look at the FE mount 70-200mm F4.0 for the A7/r – it is huge and heavy and looks silly on the small A7/r – and it is not even a F2.8 – I find that the M43 sensor is the happy compromise –
Sony has showed for example with the Exmor R sensor like the one in the RX100M2 that there are ways to improve low light ability on the smaller sensor –
Next year Panasonic will introduce an Organic sensor for M43 that will drastically improve low light performance in their M43 sensor –
So yes shallow DOF is not the same in smaller sensors – but hopefully they will come out with faster lenses like more F1.2 and F0.98 lenses –
I am convinced that Sony will implement the AF technology from the a6000 into more and more of their mirror-less bodies – even the RX10 and even some of the smaller premiums – and it will get better as Contrast AF is not that fast for faster moving objects –
Finally a test that shows that when moving the puppet left out of the screen, the camera actually follows quite well (the green dots on the puppet follow until the edge). The good test however would be moving the puppet in the circle in front of the camera, seeing if the camera follows not only on the same plane of AF, but also back and forth.
actually there is another video test with the little girl running towards the camera at 6400 iso which did pretty good im sure everyone seen that video
Yes, seen that video. However, we never saw high quality shots from that video. Why doesn’t someone post a nice review with some high quality shots for download is beyond me…
LOL the young guy in the strypey shirt keeps going “yep…yep… yep”… so annoying!!!
He just can’t keep his mouth shut when the other guy is talking! I hate that.
Now put a Sigma lens on it and see what happens…
You’ll be able to take great photos. 🙂 Sigma lenses don’t support PDAF fundamentally, but I hope the faster processor that the new camera gets and the faster sensor readout speed (it must be much faster for this PDAF performance) will be beneficial for CDAF lenses as well.
The point being that without lens support this isn’t a fast focusing camera.
Do only Sony lenses support PDAF? Because it’s my understanding hybrid-AF would completely eliminate problems with front- or back-focus.
All native E mount lenses. Not any lenses that ise adapters.
But Sigmas don’t work with PDAF on nex-6 either. And Sony lenses required their firmwares updated, which I guess is out of question with the Sigmas. I’m sure they will be at least a tiny bit faster on the a6000 as CDAF speed depends strongly on the speed of the processor.
What a pointless and terribly presented video.
It doesn’t really explain or demonstrate how hybrid works.
Nor does it mention that hybrid PDAF is only available during C-AF.
They obviously haven’t used a recent m43 camera for single af, or got the fact that the supposed advantage the A6000 is tracking a moving subject (where Oly&panny CDaF fails)
This video is for the average consumer who wants to know what the system does..not for the individual that wants to build one in thier garage.
Too much info would definitely generate many more complaints.
Thank you. I enjoyed this demo.
The high speed mirrorless focus system on this camera increases the likelihood that sony nay make a mirrorless A mount.
I was told this system works with all native E mount lenses but not on lenses that use adapters.
Sony told me that they are aware of the problem of not all lenses being supported by ospdaf and are planing to fix that on thier new models.
They did not however say on which new cameras
So focus improved for CF – but where are the E-mount lenses – the 24-70mm F2.8 and the 70-200mm F2.8 ? and a 35mm F1.4 – Yes a6000 is much improved – like better menu system which was long overdue – but still no Touch LCD or Touch to Focus and still lack of manual controls – The Fuji X-t1 is a prove that users are dying to see more manual controls – it is selling like hot-cakes – there is room for more dials – they should have kept the NEX6 mode dial with a programmable dial under it – and then another dial as well – and even a third dial –
never enough dials –
Yes we all know that the system cameras (mirror-less) need to do better in catching moving objects – so a hybrid technology is welcome – but still needs to improve for the Pros –
Contrast focus has improved a lot – I just think of my Fuji X100 vs my Panasonic GX7, what an amazing difference – the GX7 is even amazing in low light where as the X100 is just slow in good light and useless in low light – My NEX5n and NEX7 where miles ahead of the X100 but not quite as good as the GX7 – so nice to see improvements in newer cameras – and for sure the a6000 seems impressive i CF – although in SF it might not make as much of a difference –
So I am still dreaming that Sony has the NEX7 update on the way with Touch LCD and more dials and fast zoom lenses as well as few more nice primes – but I suspect it is not reality –
So most of my money has gone towards Olympus and Panasonic lately as their I find super nice fast zooms and primes – Touch LCD and Touch To Focus and more dials –
Any rumors on possible A7 firmware update for better AF?
Hi, does anyone know if the c1 button on the top of the camera can be set so that when depressed the dial behind it changes between aperture and shutter speed in manual mode (or is the only option to use the dial on the back of the camera)?
Admin .Is their any roumers regarding a new adaptor so the A6000 and A7 can focus the Alpha lenses without the Slt tec ???
