Touit Macro 50mm displayed at CES (image with the A7r)

Dc.watch (translation here) spotted that A7R and Zeiss Macro 50mm f/2.8 combo at the Zeiss stand in Las Vegas. The Zeiss Macro will be launched on February 27 (Source: BHphoto). And as you likely already know it is an APS-C mount lens. More Full Frame Zeiss lenses for the FE system will be launched later on. And five manualsZeiss FE lenses will be shown at Photokina in September.

    1. Its an IF design. The working distance will be more than a 60mm linear extension macro lens and close to a 90mm linear extension macro lens (the ones that extend on focusing closer).

    2. Thomas, sensor size doesn’t dictate the focus distance required for 1:1 image projection, so you don’t need to get closer with a FF camera compared to an APS-C camera. FF does give a wider FOV, though, so the subject will appear smaller in the printed image if you don’t crop it.

Regardless, this Zeiss macro is APS-C only, so the discussion is kind of moot anyway.

      1. Well, at least if you use tubes (but possibly even without tubes at high extension), the image circle will certainly be big enough for FF. It’ll be useless for inf still but that’s not what you typically use a 50mm macro for anyways…

  1. “And five manual Zeiss FE lenses will be shown at Photokina in September.” <– Oh, the wait will be long. 🙂

  2. It’s 75mm on full frame. The question is how good AF is? Last time I tried Touit 12 on my NEX, the autofocus was not great–slow and uncertain. Worse than in SEL 16.

    1. No it’s 75mm on apsc. It’s a macro so expect af performance to be glacial of there’s no focus limiters. Any idea if it’s mf by wire?

  3. So it’s an APS-C lens, but they decided to show it in combination with an A7r? Nice way to confuse the public Zeiss/Sony!

    1. Zeiss and Sony Zeiss are 2 different entities. Touit is under the Zeiss name and is in no way related to Sony Zeiss offerings.

      1. I said Zeiss/Sony, because I do not know if this was Sony showing a Zeiss APS-C lens on its A7r or Zeiss showing it’s lens on a Sony A7r. So maybe I should have wrote “Zeiss or Sony” to make that more clear.

  4. Admin, how do you know they’ll be 5 Manual FE Zeiss lenses? Cause if I recall Zeiss just state that they’ll be releasing manual FE Zeiss lenses. Also, any idea what are the 5 lenses?

    My personal guess would be
    1. Zeiss 18mm
    2. Zeiss 24mm
    3. Zeiss 35mm
    4. Zeiss 50mm
    5. Zeiss 85mm

    1. See this would be an epic set. Especially if they all could be between 1.8 to 2.8 and be a good combination of being fast and compact.

Zeiss have also proclaimed they will be manual focus and manual aperture but electronic reading of EXIF. Quite intriguing.

  5. It’s nice to finally see an example of this lens. It seemed to be in a constant delay with the stores always pushing back their dates once they reached the target. Hopefully the focus is quieter and faster than the other touits.

  6. I am a big fan off macro but a 50mm macro is a very difficult lens to use.
It does not provive enough working distance to the subject.
    No room for lights
    Camera shadow gets in picture
And subjets get scared away or squashed.
90Mm at least is necessary…and longer is more usefull

As I continue to say…E mount is useless for A mount or E mount wildlife photography.
By USELESS i mean that it would be unwise to choose this system for this purpose.

  7. This site used to provide info for A-mount users, but right now, its becoming Sony E-mount rumors. Havent heard a bit of usefull A-mount info for ages. Such a pitty, CP+ is just behind the corner and we A-mounters have no heads up on Sony offering. Most likely because there is none 🙁

  8. And yet another new E-Mount lens, perfect, just what we need.

Enough with the toy cameras already, let’s hear about the real A-Mount stuff!

  9. For actual macro work a thin extension tube is usually all that is necessary for an APS-C macro lens to give full coverage on FF. This is not so much of a limitation if you are using the lens only for close-up photography, but of course it does mean you lose infinity focus. Also it is likely that the lense gives greater coverage than APS-C and is restricted by baffles. I would have thought that Zeiss would never have designed these APS-C lenses if they had known Sony was going to creat a FF E mount camera.

    1. The 50/2.8 macro is only a full year late. They have only themselves to blame for the market shifting in the time they took to get it out.

    1. Seems clear from the context that it is an E-mount lens with coverage for a APS-C sized sensor. As long as no one calls it a C-mount lens we should be fine.
