He must have bought 16-70 f/4 Zeiss zoom as well! 🙂
I hope you mean the 24-70 f4! 🙂
I meant the NEX zoom Zeiss E 16-70/4 OSS. Gustav (Ijsfogel)posted impressive images from that. A lot of people found that zoom to be sub par and returned them. He is a Sony poster boy and a lighting wizard. He knows what to do to get the maximum out of even a poor zoom. 🙂
OK, I wanted to see from the new Zoom 🙁
Actually the OOF areas from the Kit-Zoom looks so good, that I may skip the Zeiss 24-70
I agree about extreme measures behind those pictures; very low ISO and small apertures. In other words lots of expert lighting. Still, it’s good to see that the camera and lens(es) are capable of near D600E image quality.
Agreed! 🙂
What is a D600E?
It’s a mistyped D800E.
Now who would ever have considered that taking great pictures actually involves understanding and using light? Live and learn.
An excellent point! The lens, if used properly and in capable hands is a superb optic that delivers superior results.
So much arguing at this point is over lens capabilities that very few people have the ability or talent to recognize or access.
Think of all the so-called landscape photographers that pretend they need 3100 lp/ph in the corners of the frame at f/2.8 and say that lack of EFCS “kills” the camera for them.
Photos like this set demonstrate that the system delivers in spades when needed.
WOW, the A7r is looking really impressive !!! SUPERB results here.
Finally !! Hope is back.
P.S. DxO confirms that the Sony A7R is up next.
Well, it seems the A7r is working just fine.
The difference between people who know what they are doing and those who are gadgetry-fans is this. Sony should prioritize the availability of these cameras to those who know what they are doing.
This is really impressive! The more I look at this, the more I want the A7r, but the thing is, it doesn’t really have the things I want in a future camera. Really hope to see samples of the 35mm on the A7!
Those eyes got me thinking.. Does the A7 / A7R have eye tracking AF?
yep 🙂
I saw trey ratcliff wrote that it did but on the sony uk spec’s it says it’s only available with the laea4 adapter.
Sadly Sony’s own store sites are the #1 WORST place to get accurate product info. For example, at this moment of writing this comment, http://store.sony.com/sonnar-t-fe-55mm-f1.8-za-zid27-SEL55F18Z/cat-27-catid-All-Alpha-NEX-Lenses still claims the FE 55mm f/1.8 has optical stabilization. What a terrible site, right?
Better to get specs elsewhere. The sony.net site was one of the best I saw so far, I think. http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en-us/products/uxc2/index.html But the product info on Amazon is likely accurate as well.
Yes it’s one of the headline features. On Amazon’s A7 page (with Sony’s big detail section) it says:
“New Eye AF control
Even when capturing a subject partially turned away from the camera with a shallow depth of field, the face will be sharply focused thanks to extremely accurate eye detection that can prioritize a single pupil. A green frame appears over the prioritized eye when focus has been achieved for easy confirmation. Eye AF can be used when the function is assigned to a customizable button, allowing users to instantly activate it depending on the scene.”
These samples are looking pretty good. Now, I want to see some proper A7 samples too.
I found some A7 samples here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/leehong_gz/
Includes some samples from the SEL 28-70 too, very impressive!
Those samples look good enough to me. Thanks for the link.
Nice samples … thanx! 🙂
I don’t know, the corners seem soft and definitely some vingetting. Very disturbing for a lens this expensive. Just kidding. Results look great to me!
Haha, you got me there for a moment 🙂 Wanted to make a similar joke, knowing there are folks around here who always find something to complain about. Yes, it’s sharper than necessary, too much sharpening applied, in this light even bad lenses can seem good, the model has a horrible mood in the morning, WTF…
Quality of camera and lens proven 🙂
I would like to see a few high ISO samples, but I’m sure they’ll pop up here, thanks to the efforts of our Admin. May I hereby express my gratitude, Sir…
Read the Dyxum post. Thse are jpg straight out of camera. Gustav only uses LR and no RAW converter yet. He mentions using Contast +1 and Sharpness +1.
So sharp!
Seems that the A7r will be the nightmare of make-up artists everywhere.
Photographer: Hey gang, just got the new A7r!
MupAr: Zat is iiiaaat! I quit!
+1. So much detail…
Hahaha that’s what I noticed first on the model is that horrible lipstick job. Maybe portrait photogs should stick to the more forgiving 24mp sensor or get used to softening up those blemishes and mistakes often in post lol
+100. I thought that it was just me. Did you notice her fingers in the last picture? That is easily enough resolution to recreate her finger prints and use it to open her Iphone 5S 🙂 .This reminds when HD TV was introduced and all of the old news women were replaced by younger women because HD shows everything…
Are you f*cking kidding me? That’s a 100% crop?!?
Consider my mind blown.
Yaaaaawn.
The D800 I have has been doing this for two years! With a full range of lenses including world class wide zooms and super telephotos. How is your Sony FE 200mm F2.0 working for you. Oh wait…
You guys sound like you’ve just discovered high res photography. You do know about MF right? And lighting?
Also prepare for huge files…and slow download and processing times.
And then the realization that unless you print huge (and I mean ***HUGE***) or crop the hell out of things then 16MP and good lighting is good enough and on the internet can’t be distinguished.
I also found that stitching images in post gave indistinguishable files when using a lower res camera. I have used my D800 for paid work and it gives me leeway in post when I’ve screwed up but for everyday shooting? Massive pixel peeping overkill. Ricoh GR all the way. It fits in your pocket!
Slow this, slow that. Money for an expensive camera but still working with old computers?
Indistinguishable this, overkill that. Money for high resolution cameras but not for good glass, glasses and technique classes?
Same arguments we’ve heard for almost a decade. Get with the times.
A master class in discourse….what the hell kind of language is that?
What’s your point in regards to my comment? I’m not allowed to find this impressive? I shoot film and a Pentax MX-1 compact, so I hardly think that makes me a pixel-peeping sharpness whore. Sharpness is overrated, but that doesn’t make this less impressive.
+1
This is starting to rival, if not exceed, “medium format” IQ. Impressive is impressive, and it makes sense that the D800 has the same performance, since it is basically the same sensor technology. I think what is even more impressive is that Zeiss is really upping the game here, which is good for the whole industry.
No doubt I want the a7R, and I’m jealous of people who can jump on it. Whether I need it/have use for it/will buy it, of course, is another matter completely. 🙂
I respect your opinion however I do not agree. I believe that quality based on pixel count is not equal when it comes to different formats. All of my favorite images have been taken with my 645D and prior to this, my film Mamiya 67. I rented the D800E and 645D to compare them before purchasing my 645D and for me the D800E fell short. It did not produce the look, depth and mesmerizing 3D feel of medium format. My post processing technique with the 645D produced sharper, deeper, richer images. No matter how I processed the D800E images I could not replicate the 645D’s look and quality.
@Heidi
Thanks for the info. If you could post your comparisons somewhere, that would be great!
Indeed, image quality has a bunch of parameters that must be discussed to be realistically judged.
MF creates amazing DOF and colour gradation that the D800 isn’t able to. D800 has better high ISO image quality because of better signal to noise ratio inherent in CMOS sensors. But each pixel captures less light, and lenses don’t spread light across the frame in the same isolating DOF that MF can. And the 645D is one of the least isolative of MF cameras out there. Phase One and Hassy backs do a lot better with MF lenses.
35mm photography will never rival the qualities of MF because the sensor size is different, not better or worse. It is one of the reasons that MF has been popular in fashion and portrait photography since forever.
My pictures were all of family, not something I want to share on a public forum however here are links to another person’s comparison.:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1213636
Digiloyd’s comment: The 40-megapixel CCD sensor in the 645D is terrific, no doubt there. And admittedly a CCD image has a certain appeal over CMOS from what I can see, the Leica M9 vs M240 being the most notable case. It’s a real difference in style and I can see that some shooters would really respond to it (I did)…The D800 has a wider dynamic range and better color accuracy and with top glass and sharpening produces 1st class images.
You can find more personal views and reviews of both online.
I think those who want to believe the differences between the D800E/645D are negligable have not experienced the magic of medium format out in the field. Tests of brick walls and ugly scenes hardly show a camera’s full abilities. My walkabout candid test of family with the 645D resulted in 100% in focus, sharp images with pop and magic. The D800E gave me several oof pictures probably because I was using shallower depth of field to imitate the 645D aperture and this is known to test the D800E’s focus ability. None of the D800E’s images had the medium format feel, pop/magic.
That being said the a7r will be gorgeous and certainly be my choice over the D800E!
I’m not trying to insult anyone. It is impressive but that sensor, or a very similar one has been available for almost two years in albeit a bigger camera with a huge selection of lenses.
And I’m not saying that it isn’t impressive. Sony have done an amazing job in cramming it all in a tiny camera.
But trust me, some of you will be surprised by the file size and how slow processing is even on a very fast set up. Memory is cheap but it does all get a bit klunky when simple snap shots of cats and kids can be 70MB in size and have to be repeatedly down sampled for Internet posting or emailing.
Now pro landscape shooters I can understand getting the 7r except the diminutive size would be offset by the huge tripod setup…
I think it’s a wonderful gadget but overkill for almost everyone. Your mileage may vary.
I don’t really need more resolution than a ricoh GR has. I was reading some acclaimed street shooters who use it who discussed techniques for reducing the apparent resolution such as shooting at f11 or very high ISO to add character to what they saw as too much resolving power…

I don’t get the downsample argument for Internet posting either. Practically goes for every camera currently available. A one step batch process will do for any of those.

Is this all you want to say in all your posts?
36MP just got owned. Can’t wait to see this sensor in the alpha line-up.
You’ve being ignorant again haven’t you?
They ARE the alpha line-up. They even introduce the new name “A7” to make it more
obvious to people that they are Sony alpha cameras.
Could you try next time to be a little more respectful?
Seriously, it bugs the heck out of me when people jump on those that have made obvious mistakes regarding terminology. It was obvious what he meant, in reference to the a mount “alpha” cameras. We don’t need the police to pounce on people every moment in this forum. I always double and sometimes triple check my postings and have to be absolutely clear about what I mean just to avoid these un constructive responses.
Besides, I think we can be a bit more forgiving towards people that screw up Sony’s naming scheme as it appears even their own employees are unsure of the exact models they’re referring to at times.
he probably means alpha line up as in Alpha mount…
A-Mount 😉
YOu need to re-read my comment. It was in praise of the A7…get it…as in “36MP just got owned” by the A7R. Obviously it’s an alpha. I thought it was also just as obvious that I was refering the the alpha mount. I’ll use smaller sentences with instructions for you next time.
“And now the surprise…this is a 100% crop!”
Sorry, nope. Your crop is 1000 x 800 px. This would translate (roughly) to a 2500 x 3000 px full frame picture.
A 36 MP sensor delivers about 5000 x 7500 px.
So your sample is rather a 50% crop, not 100%.
Unfortunately, the maths seem correct. I don’t think they are 100% either. Still very impressive !
+1
And how exactly do you calculate this? You can crop any portion of the full frame and show it. It will always be a 100% crop, but there is no way to tell from the crop how large the full frame image is.
Because the full image is shown below…
LOL!
Whats so funny? I think Nexmaniac has a point. Any more details?
That is not the full image. It is already a crop. Look at the dimensions.
If this was really a professional shot, that shit would be all cleaned up. She’s one of the Henderson’s.
maybe a bit too sharp until might view as wrinkles.
Found a nice Link on dyxum for A7 Samples, maybe also interesting:

Oh my f** eyes! Don’t people use softar anymore?
Her facial hairs just cut my damn eyes! Can’t stop looking….
Now can we have some RX10 user samples please.
Agreed ….
Way to sharp and analytical. That’s shit :D.
Anyway… I am so sad the camera is shit in video mode :(. Sold my fuji X-E1 because of that, now no camera.
Only the 5D3 is good for still and video, but no mirorless camera can do the job yet 🙁
As has been mentioned before, the video performance is not up to par yet, and will be fixed with the production firmware. One of the selling points of the BIONZ X was the ability to sample the entire sensor and not just a few rows. Sampling a few rows is what causes the moire, and sampling the whole sensor fixes it. (It’s called supersampling). As for the soft video image quality, that may still be a problem.
Hi,
where did you see that ? I taught the full read out was only for the RX10..
And yeah still pretty soft :/
Let me know
Sorry, I can’t find a reference for it, but thought it was in one of the release videos talking about the wonders of the BIONZ X. I could be mistaken. There was another post in one of these topics where someone was told the video quality of the a7 and a7R would be fixed to be more RX10 like before release.
Andrea, is this something you could have your sources try to verify (i.e., that the video will be fixed before production so as to be processed the same way the RX10 does)? That is what is holding me back from getting the A7 or A7R, as I really want an “all in one” solution.
Yo that was me. I was told my a Sony rep at an Australian launch event that it was going to be fixed to bring it inline with the rx10 prior to release. I hope he is correct because the moire is very bad in some of the sample video but other appear prefect. At that same event I purchased a A7, so finger crossed. I filmed the event but do not get that statement on card as I was to busy playing with the A7 at the time
Did the Sony rep mention something along these lines as to the A7/A7R?
“Where the Sony RX10 really breaks new ground for video, though, is that it’s the first camera we’re aware of that reads out the entire sensor pixel array for every frame, performing sub-sampling/video anti-aliasing in the processor. This potentially addresses the huge bugaboo of still-camera video recording, namely the tendency towards moiré and false-color artifacts, thanks to the mismatch between still-image and video resolution.
Pretty much every digital still camera we’ve tested produces very noticeable moiré patterns and color artifacts in its video. (The Canon 5D Mark III deserves note as doing better than most, but even it still shows some level of video artifacts.)
The issue is that a still camera has to get rid of a lot of its image data in order to output a 1,920 x 1,080 video image. They usually don’t have enough processor horsepower to do a proper job of sub-sampling the image in the vertical direction (across scan lines), so resort to simply skipping rows of pixels, jumping 2, 3, or 4 rows for each one actually output. The problem with this is that the image data is way undersampled from an image-processing standpoint, so moiré and artifacts are pretty much guaranteed. It’s not that the industry doesn’t know what to do to prevent the problem, it’s just that there isn’t enough processing horsepower available to do what the job requires. Until now.”

impressive demo of the A7R abilities to make some sharp photos.
but seems too much oversharp is applied to this jpeg.
First they whine about soft corners wide open.
Next they whine about oversharp.

+1 Interesting!
Is really the 24-70 F4 Zeiss being sold at 499€ ???
http://www.fnac.com/Objectif-zoom-Sony-Carl-Zeiss-24-70-mm-f-4/a6536314/w-4#ficheDt
I think it might be a mistae, because in the details section, they talk about Objectif zoom Sony Carl Zeiss 28-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 …
Well I just ordered the Zeiss 24-70 f4 for 474,91 € 🙂
If they don’t cancel my order, I’ve just had a very good deal !
Hej,
just tried to order it to Germany. But it wouldn’t accept my address. How did you manage it oder do u live in France? htx
Ordered as well
Ordered too !
I also captured the image of the website. If they send us the 28-70, let’s start a class action together !!!
Julien,
Are you french? I tried to order to spanish and norwegian adresses, but it doesn’t seem possible 🙁
Martin & mTwo : yes, I ordered it from France
Julien : I took a screenshot, too, and the mail clearly says 24-70 f4 Zeiss.
But in the same situation, they sometimes send a letter explaining it was a mistake, and they make a cashback. We’ll see !
You might be right, will be interesting to se if they honour their mistake …
The site let me order one to the US.
This image is stunning, no words. But, at the same time, it doesn’t need so aggressive sharpening. What for?
I’m not sure if this is a bummer to anyone, but both the new Zeiss 35 & 55 have no OSS, although optically superior.
My hands are getting old & shaky, so…..
While i’m not going to buy a7/r now anyway, i would really prefer camera with IBIS.
But on the other hand its not like before stab no one could get a sharp picture. Same as with high ISO – people tend to forget that just some years ago ISO 800 could be considered unusable and scream about 1/2 stop more noisy ISO 6400.
That was a deal breaker for me – the the main reason I’ve not gone for the 6d/d600 is the lack of stabilised primes (and evf, if I’m honest).
Removing OSS is part of the reason these lenses are performing so well. A back to basics approach.
This comment makes zero sense.
Same for me but for video. Need 5 axis IBIS..
I need 7 axis IBIS.
OMFG! Take my money!
Sorry, not impressed. Its far from 100% and I can easily do pictures like this with my A850. Still a nice picture!
How is the iso performance at 6400 on the A850 and weight?
I like the weight of my A900. Don’t consider it a disadvantage:
A900- 850g
A7R- 407g
Who cares? Your looking at the difference between 1/2 a pound. I think the value of this weight reduction is WAY overstated. I haven’t seen one person coming back talking about how all these smaller cameras are saving there back. The lenses take up most of the space in your bag anyway. I’m sure the grip on the A99 feels ten times more comfortable after holding for over an hour than the A7R.
I care 🙂 If I can shave a pound (which is pretty much the actual weight difference between the A99 and A7r) off of a single item in my backpack, that is great. Not to mention the bulk reduction. The A99 is obviously way more comfortable and I’d prefer it in the studio, but certainly not when I am out all day long.
Are you kidding me ? I used to shoot with the A700 for years with a Tamron lens. After a good 3 hours of shooting my arms used to be sore of all that shooting at different angles.
After it died and I had to skimp and get a A55 I find shooting so much easier even when using the same lens
Sure using the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 on the A55 is far from comfy its still much better to use than the only marginally heavier A700.
And lets not forget that the lenses are also smaller and lighter and there will also be less demands on your tripod so you can get away with a lighter tripod.
I just don’t get it. You’re telling me 1/2 a lb makes that much difference? I just went hiking for a few hours over the weekend. I had a camera backpack and CARRIED my a900 with a 50mm up to a lookout no problem. I had at one point this and the A77 on me. I can walk around with the A900 and and Tokina 300mm or ZA 135mm all day in the woods. Where are all these heavy comments coming from?
I am no tough guy. I would rather sleep till 10 than get up at 5 and use my cycle but carrying the equipment isn’t the issue. Its shooting continuously with the camera that is the issue. And that’s where that few lb makes a difference,
Not saying i am shifting to E mount as i want my ibis and no adapter will ever suffice as a solution to use my lenses on an E mount camera.
Last time I checked 443 grams was practically 1 lb, not half.
Now give this with A-mount in A850/900/99 form factor, preferably with a built in vertical grip (current A99 grip looks like a cludge, not something built to fit together:), reasonably fast and precise AF, focus points spread further away from center and take my money!
I owned a 5D2 with battery grip briefly and it was heavy, specially with the legacy lenses I like to use. I never took it anywhere because the weight and bulk was a problem. I always grab my 5N because of it convenient size and weight, I never felt tired from using the 5N unlike my 5D2. I still think the 5N produces a nicer picture
6400 ISO…you crazy. No need for that kinda performance round these parts….
Depends, but it’s really nice to be able to take good quality images in a very dark place. I sometimes needed to use ISO 6400 with my NEX 5N to get a shot during the night, although I usually avoid as much as possible going above 1600. I’d be a very happy camper if the A7(R) had clean ISO 6400, and usable ISO 12800, it would allow more possibilities. Per example, the other day, my friend proposed his girlfriend in a park, at night, during a foggy night, and originally wanted to propose to her on a path in the forest leading to a creek, and the path would’ve been candlelit. He knew how difficult it would be to take pictures, but asked me if I could nevertheless hide in the woods and follow them, taking pictures as quietly as I could. Being nearby a creek, the noise from the water would have covered the noise of the shutter. Fortunately, he did not propose nearby the path, and I could hide and take pictures where there was a little bit more light, but if I had the A7(R) and it could take fairly good pictures at high ISOs, I would definitely use it. Not professionally, but in that kind of occasion where my friends need that kind of help.
This picture is taken at ISO 64, not 6400.
This is mirrorless !!.
Low weight, compact size and equal or more quality than A850.
“BETTER IS THE ENEMY OF GOOD ENOUGH” – Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Sergey Georgiyevich Gorshkov.
Yeah, I like that. What happened to him?
He decided that 78 years is good enough and died, because “perfect is the enemy of the good” is attributed to Voltaire (while he was not the first with that idea).
I prefer EVF and smaller FF cameras. A850 used are still around $1500. I rather spend a little extra for the smaller size and 36mp with wifi/nfc.
This is not correct. There are still A850’s new out there for sale. I picked up an a900 from a Sony outlet new for 899.00 just two weeks ago. A little extra? Hardly…more like just about double.
And then you will ask why some ultrabook costs 2 times higher than desktop PC with same configuration, egronomic keyboard and larger screen.
You are a bit dumb.
Its normal that you can such picture with a850.
Its new that for taking picture possible with a850 you now only need camera this size and weight.
And you cant mount rangefinder and other short flange lenses on a850 (no matter what problems they will have on a7/r its better than lying unusable somewhere).
Niche market there kid- manual range finder lenses that will still have problems on the A7r. Pass. Great camera, don’t get me wrong. Just don’t overstate the advantages.
OK, A850 and A900 is the best of you, except me.
It’s the best for many photographers at the current price point. A7R no doubt is a remarkable achievement. If you can afford it and don’t mind the limitations it’s gold. The lens selection and use of adaptors puts it out of the reach of semi-pro’s even though the cost is still “affordable.” Add it up and it gets expensive fast.
“kid”?
If i am a kid, then i guess you are old enough to have Parkinson. That will explain your scepticim – lack of stabilisation is much worse with your shaky hands.
Don’t be so grumpy – go see your doctor, he can prescribe you some anticholinergics for tremor.
Niche market? And what’s wrong with niche market? All FF and advanced crop DSLRS are niche market relative to entry-level systems (witch are mostly used with just kit lens), anything with fixed lens and smaller sensor and mobile phones used for shooting ducks in the mirror.
And while there MAY BE (because wait for later tests, not ones made on preproduction model, and not from ONE reviwer) some problem lenses, but it cant mean that EVERY WA rangefinder lens will be unusable. And there are not wa lenses, and there are lenses with flange long enough to lessen that problems, but still unmountable on DSLRs, and there are all DSLR lenses – you cant put sony lens on canon or canon lens on nikon with lensless adapter. But you can put them all on A7. And canon or contax g lenses will even have some AF. Its very useful for anyone who want to try some other system unique lenses but does not want to jump ship.
I see a picture taken with bare frontal flash and an annoying amount of sharpening. I find it rather vulgar and, I can hardly tell if it’s an exceptional camera or yet another toy.
I was waiting for an expert like you BRB to enlighten me. Is it any good? I am so glad we can draw on such talent in this forum.
@Bollox
Oh, there is too little place for two of us, i gladly give you the title of main expert of forum, whichever you choose.
Can you tell me, where i was talking about aforementioned pictures exceptional qualities, because i just cant remember myself.
And yes, a7 is a plastic toy. Its just a pentax Q in bigger body, sensor images and videos are fake. Sony wants to sell camera division to hasselblad and just tries to steal some money. If you look at first pictures from a7r – that blurry ones earlier, you can see this. And i think current picture is made with nikon secret retro-style camera, just with fake exif.
I shot with the A850 day in and out for over a year.
A great camera but the A7r looks to be in a whole new league of quality (really impressed with Zeiss FE primes so far). The A850 is great in a studio environment using base ISO but moved beyond that it is left wanting.
A850 does have some disadvantages when shooting action, but it is not that bad, when used properly. I am shooting fashion shows with it (mainly Sony 70-200/2.8 @F2.8-F5.6, depending on light), and while not perfect, it is more than capable of delivering usable ISO 1600 shots of models moving on runway.
I am quite optimistic about Sony future, however. Their high ISO (which was main complaint after they took over from Minolta) is as good or better than competition. If they can do same to AF, they are all set for pro market.
I agree with you, the A850 does nice work but you need to know it well to get the best from it.
Where are those “Meh” people? Need a little help here..
Ok let me just start it for you guys:
MEH..
Considering that “meh” is onomatopoeia for goat bleating…
Meeeeeeeh!
…
(just kidding!)
He bought the camera and lens from Sony??? How? The second time Sony let me use the a99 for two weeks (the first time was for just 1 day) they told me I couldn’t buy it since it’s only for test purposes only (actually, there was a metallic grey sticker below the camera saying “not for sale”)
Rooru, before you throw out accusations at someone – check your facts.
Gustav never said that he bought the camera, someone else did. Gustav said that he didn’t WANT to return the camera.
.
GunnarK, please check /your/ facts. Nobody was accusing anybody of anything.
But hey, maybe your English comprehension is better than mine. What exactly did the Accuser accused the Accused of doing?
well, clearly too much rez and sharpness for portraiture…shades of Jonathan Swift.
Photoshop is wonderful at softening very sharp photos.
Unfortunately the reverse isn’t completely true.
uuhhhh. that was a joke.
Sorry to interrupt but if you go over to Dyxum.com you will see the 100% crop of the eye. It is correct that the picture above is not the 100%.
just thought I’d add that
Tim
when i shoot in JPEG , i always put mu contrast and sharpness to +1 (sometime`s +2) , so when i get this A7R i did it automaticly , i do that with al the camera`s , i did that with my A700 ,A77 A900, A99, A58
after see the picture`s ,i saw that it was
not necessarily , i think its because it has now AA-FILTER,it`s increased the sharpness , but if someone like to see A 100% crop i place it
ijsvogel is my DYXUM name
gustav is my real name
Great pictures, thanks for sharing.
Looking forward to seeing your other tests! Maybe some A-mount wides?
“EXCELLENT KICK THE A… OF BETTER AND GOOD ENOUGH”
USA Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Randall Johnson.
Definitely not a good portrait camera unless the subject has 100% perfect skin!!! I use my D700 over my D800 because of this.
If that’s the route you want to take, maybe you should just stand further away? You’ll get your lesser resolution.
“Not a good portrait camera”. Christ.
It’s fair enough that the extra work touching up skin is something people should consider when purchasing a new camera. Consider RAW video workflow, yes it’s gives a better end result but the amount of extra resources be that time or hard drive space is not always practical.
This is a truly silly idea.
I suppose that a $3.00 tub of Vaseline would make this a great portrait camera, though – which is a great price for an accessory to improve a full frame mirrorless camera and a 35mm lens that can resolve the hairs growing on your hairs.
I don’t know much technical stuff when it comes to cameras but can’t they make a camera with a movable filter so you can use it when you want because I am getting the A7 but I have to admit I really like the A7R.
TO MUCH DETAIL
Oh yes nice shots, but this is Gustav the guy Sony pay and give free stuff too.
So I guess he likes the camera as he didn’t pay for it! (oh he even liked the A3000 sigh)
Come on let’s wait for someone who’s handing their own money over and get their opinion.
Oh yeah, we can’t trust his opinion that the camera is well built, that he likes the shutter sound or that the menu is similar to the alpha one. Now that I think about it, maybe he made those photos with a Nikon D800E? (that was all sarcasm)
SIMON T
they pay me nothing , and the camera must back to sony in a few day`s
and yes i like the A3000 , what he give`s you , for the money that he cost
i buy my own A7R , and sell my A99 for it ,
so dont writh something you dont now
Anyone who sells their A99 for the A7R is out of their minds. The only reason you would do that is if you had no high quality glass to begin with. The advantages the A99 offers over this IMO (and that includes size) are substantial.
“The only reason you would do that is if you had no high quality glass to begin with.”
???
I had a a700 a850 a33 a57 and a77. I would always leave them at home because of the size and always see a awesome picture that was never taken because my camera was at home. I carry my camera with me much more often now although for some strange reason I see less awesome picture opportunity’s now that I do have it with me. I hate the Nex menu. I love the size and the quality lenses I can get for almost dirt cheap and I find that manual focus makes me feel more intimately attached to my camera. It feels like making love rather than just F**king. Its hard to explain but I just feel more connected to E-mount. I even like the strange look of my 135mm 1.8 attached to my nex-6. I just wish I had better Af lens options that don’t cost as much as a used car but I am really starting to like MF. For what I do at the moment the e-mount fits I may end up getting A-mount again if the need comes but I doubt it.
Or maybe they just like the A7r better. Certain things are for certain people. I never thought I would like E-mount better than A-mount but I do and there is a good chance I may never get another A-mount camera as e-mount gets better.
Now that’s interesting. See, that’s a comment that means something to me. If you have used a-mount by enjoy e-mount more than that says something. Real reviews from actual real users. I’d like to here more about why you prefer this.
Also, I would pick up an A7R, but I wouldn’t dump the A99 to get it and then shell out a few hundred more for an adaptor. UNLESS you really didn’t have any lenses you planned on using to begin with. I just don’t like the adaptor thing.
You don’t know Gustav to you!
Calling people mad in their face? Bravo, Tom.
Care to list that substantial adavantages?
Size per se is not an advantage, ergonomic grip, controls, and some counterweight to 70-400 are advantages. I would like you to have big, but empty and lightweight camera, with minimal controls and no grip and still say that size matters.
And if you cant comprehend why people would want to trade a99 for a7r, well, some bought a99 because main feature they wanted was FF (and only other option was older a900/850). If someone mostly uses manual lenses, and there are plenty of them, and is ok with need to compesate lack of IBIS by tripod, flash or shorter exposure, that a99 hold not so much for them. Sensor in a7r is newer and can produce more details, EVF is the same, grip and controls may be ok – i believe you had not held a7r personally to compare them. PDAF, IBIS and electronic firs curtain are only a99 features that a7r does not have. And not everyone is dependent on them.
And you can have PDAF with adapter.
Can’t argue with that comment. Well said….
maybe some people will take pictures with a a7/a7r they would never shoot with their heavy dslr because they dont like to carry it around?
+100000000
They just an idiot troll Gustav, ignore them.
+1
He has been trolling on here ever since the A7/R was released.
Gustav, just ignore these guys. This is not Dyxum, where you can have normal discussion.
Looking forward to see what you can do with A7R and 500mm A-mount lens, kingfishers are getting face lift for that combo 🙂
The a3000 is a surprisingly good camera for its price, I’ve yet to be disappointed by it and is out doing my expectations
Why state something different?
“i have decided to keep the camera , and not give it back to sony”
I own a 5N, A7 and A3000. The a3000 is a well priced camera, easily comparable to others in the same price point. The grip is very good, well balance and Raw upto iso800 is good, JPEG upto 1600 maybe even 3200. Now I’ve ordered the a7 ill be selling my a3000 but not because its bad, it was purchased as a b camera and well to play around with.
Fascinating! My only question is: do I really need it? 🙂
Most people don’t need more than a camera phone to capture people’s imagination. Pixel’s aren’t everything.
With that said though, heck yeah….we all need this thing. It’s camera magic on steroids.
hello
I am an amateur and would like to ask some expert comment.
I am always interested to get a camera in a small package size. But on the other hand, a zoom would be handy to get the proper composition.
Knowing now that the A7R can deliver sharp pictures, does it have a digital zoom, and could I use the A7R with the 35mm prime to get the small package, and use the digital zoom to make the proper composition, and still get “reasonable” sharpness. Reasonable for e.g. holiday picture shooting.
Looking forward to hear your comments.
If you don’t know what digital zoom is one has to wonder if a full frame camera is really the right one for you. Anyways, crop and digital zoom are much the same thing and sicne the a7r has a very high resolution sensor, you can crop the images quite a bit.
Not sure you have to understand digital zoom to enjoy a FF camera.
samples, taken with the 55mm f1.8:

Well, it certainly looks like those two Zeiss primes are excellent.
I hate how all the news focuses on the A7r. I preordered the A7. Is that totally dumb? I don’t want to have to do retouching of 36MP portraits and I don’t want to downsample them either.
Yes that dumb. Not the a7 preorder, but a7r news hating. Some more news about a7r that shows its capabilities dont make a7 worse camera that it was when you decided on preorder.
You will still, at times, have to retouch portraits. Even 24mp with an AA filter captures an amazing amount of detail.

I just don’t get why so many people who post in photography forums are so unkind and disrespectful. I do want to thank Gustav and not criticize him. I am thankful that he is skilled enough that Sony would allow him to shoot with the A7R before it is released and share photos. This forum is certainly not a photography community where people can be friends with each other. Why do some attempt to tear down another person’s work. Oh he did this or didn’t do that. Is photography really about trying to be better than someone else? Is it about ego and put downs? It shouldn’t be. It seems that people who say the rudest things are for sure people who are hiding behind a code name and do they ever provide a direct link to their work so we can see that good photography is? Hardly. Keep shooting Gustav. I can learn from you. The others can just go away.

Because calling others photos bad is much more practical than making better photos – you can stay indoors, you can do it in every weather and lighting conditions, and you dont even need to have any camera – saves a lot of money.
I get your point. However, knocking eachother around a bit helps sharpen our senses. It’s when you go overboard.
I’ve often learned more about real photography from posted comments then the articles themselves. I think if you read through these comments you’ll see more value than letdowns. People are voicing their expression to what is for many very passionate hobby/profession. It gets heated sometimes!!!

Thank you gordon
As i say before, if anyone want to see the hole picture or a extreme crop, i want to do that
I,m a hobby-nature-photographer, and since three years ambasadeur of sony camera’s.
95% of my picture’s are ome from nature,.
I started with the minolta 7D, than the A700, and now the A77, i have also the A99, but most of the time i use the A77,because of the mm . I photograph with MY OWN 70-400 GII and MY OWN 500mm F4
so most of the time the A99 stay in the bag, that’s the reason that i’m thinking to take the A7r or A7, its more easier to walk around with this grea camera, and because sony say that there come till 2015 fifteen more lenses.
Sony ask my to try this camera, so i do, his monday the camera must back to sony, so i have only a few day’s
I take some day’s off at my work ( i’m a welder ) to try this camera, and make a plan to photograph as much as i can till monday
So first model-picture’s, tomorrow some picture’s in the forest, and sunday buterflies, and also higher iso
And its not only positive thinks that i say, i also say at the forum, where i place the picture’s, that the shutter-sound is louder than i thought
i only want to share my tougths and my result with other (hobby)-photographers, and. Help others ( i dont now everything)
I place always my picture’s on DYXUM, a very friendly sony-forum, and i dont like that someone tells thinks that is not true, if that is the way we talk here about our hobby, i shall do my best to post only on DYXUM
Thanks everyone
Gustav

For me its no problem
Thank you Gustav for great pictures! Love your nature photography, especially kingfishers
Maybe a silly question, but can someone verify if the crop mode can be engaged on full frame lenses? I was just thinking this would be nice for extra reach on telephoto lenses.
There is no extra reach in crop. Only card space saving.
I know the MP will go down to about 15, but if an aps-c lens is put on, there is a crop factor of about 1.5 or so. Wouldn’t the same apply if you cropped a FF lens (assuming the feature can be turned off and on anytime)?
You can crop all you want in any image application afterwards and get the same thing. That’s all the APS-C crop is. It just does it in the camera body, rather than after the fact.
Yes and no… With a 1.5x crop factor (eg an apsc sensor), a 35mm lens would give about the same field of view as a 50mm lens on a full frame sensor.
However, if you have a full frame lens on a full frame camera, enabling crop mode would force the camera to capture only part of the image part on the sensor. You’d achieve the same effect by capturing a full frame image and cropping it in post.
The reason full frame sensors support crop mode is to allow you to use apsc lenses on them, as they don’t cover the whole of the frame (otherwise you’d basically end up with a black rectangle with a circular image in the middle). The real benefit of being able to manually enable or disable crop mode is that some apsc lenses can actually cover a full frame sensor, especially if stopped down (for example the 60mm Tamron).
The answer is yes. Someone did it by mistake over at dpreview.
Thank you for a real answer. I know you can crop post… But having the crop in camera would be useful for making sure focus is accurate. The flexibility of having a 70-200mm f2.8 cropped at 330mm or so at 2.8 is intriguing. Even at 15mp. Then again, that’s a damn expensive lens, especially when compared to the upcoming 40-150 (80-300mm eq.) f2.8 coming to mft.
Remember the crop factor affects perceived depth of field, so the 70-200/2.8 is more like a 105-300/4
first complaints about blurry images, now complaints about too much sharpness and detail. this place is getting even more ridiculous…
I agree. The comments section in SAR is an ode to stupidity.
Is crop crap?
What a brave model to allow such highly detailed public scrutiny of her face.
Foto Sony ZA55 1.8 OSS http://www.sony.net/united/clock/
To close to her face. I can see everything….BTFU!!!!
Yes, mTwo, I live in France. Now, I am crossing fingers ! Does anyone know when the 24-70 is expected to be released ? I think I read somewhere it would be early 2014, so there is a risk they will just cancel the order. We’ll see !
Wow! Models will NOT like all that detail 😉
btw, could you guys mean 1:1 magnification when you say 100% crop?
People wake up, thats a resized sharpened photo. Theres NO WAY thats 100% crop of the image below if it indeed is at 36mp
Its an in-camera +1 sharpening (and +1 on the contrast). Are you claiming to know more about this image than the tog who took it?
Im claiming to have used a d800. A shoulders to head portrait at 36 mp crops 100% to an eye. Go ahead and download one of the other full pixel samples and crop them to 100%, youll see. These are resized and then cropped, which makes any camera look spectacular. And flash is the other universally known trick to boost apparent sharpness. So he used every trick known to make the output look good. In reality very very few shots are at iso 64 and even fewer of you use flash. Most of the buyers will get the same results weve seen so far, crappy soft stuff regardless of shutter speed with natural light.
Its amazing how far people will go to fool themselves
Now THAT is much better! 🙂
You could take a nut shot a football field away with this thing.
How about a hot model next time for the closeup,
This woman is gorgeous. I think she pulls off the grim reaper cape and Elvira makeup quite well. You must mean that you want to see her in a more flattering pose with less clothing.
Your joking right?
DXOmark might have the final say on pixel level quality, but the lens selection is pretty bad. Take your manual focusing retro designed ebay castoffs for a ride on another camera (from the 60’s & 70’s) because this camera will make them fuzzy.
Also, the photos you keep posting and linking are not representative of reality. Unless you like overly sharpened drivel.
Lastly, who in the world (pros that matter) would ever use this junk.
FLAME ON!!!
I saw this interesting question on the Forum, but nobody answered…
“…The A7r seems to have (probably must have) microlens offset. But with the adaptor and A-mount, the light will be coming in almost in parallel and the microlens offset might worsen the IQ. Do you see any vignetting, pixel cross-talk and/or worse SNR in the corners?
If there isn’t any, all A-mount should work perfectly on the A7r, If not, The A7 could be the only option for the A-lenses….”
You can imagine solutions for this, like if the microlenses are small enough, some of the microlenses are titled one way, and some titled in another way or normally. And the software processing emphasizes (uses more information from) one “type” of pixels under the microlenses best suited for the attached lens (which identifies itself to the camera via the lens mount pins).
Wow…one downsampled flash photo made everyone unsee the full pixel real world samples from last week…amazing
OMG, it’s so amazing!
1987 called. They want their stylist back.
UGH, I wouldn’t want this.
my imperfections in HD would show like a sore-thumb.
🙁
