  1. “With the WCL-X100 and TCL, X100/s owner will have a three-lens mini system (28mm, 35mm and 50mm) with leaf shutter, fast aperture and terrific IQ.”

Mini system? Have you seen the size of that thing? I’d wager an XPro1 with 18-55 would be smaller, and an XPro1 with 18, 27 and 35 would be a smaller system to carry around.

      1. But wouldn’t the maximum iris opening stay the same on the lens? On the regular 23mm lens, the formula would suggest a 23mm / 2.0 = 11.5 mm iris opening.

Now if you make the focal length 35 mm instead at the same maximum iris opening, your f-stop would be 35mm / 11.5 mm = about f3.0. That is, unless the firmware can tell the aperture blades to open up further when the tele conversion lens is attached.

I could be missing something, but that is my understanding.

In any case, even if your f-stop stayed the same, your t-stop would inevitably be affected because you are putting additional glass in front of the lens, which the light then has to travel through. So even if the f-stop were the same, you would need to use slightly higher ISO or longer shutter speed with the conversion lens attached than without.

      2. Sorry, should have researched a bit more, the entrance pupil apparently is not the same thing as the iris opening.

But the second part would still apply I suppose, putting on more glass in front of the lens eats up some light unless the additional lenses somehow reduce the final image circle.

  2. A sellotaped-on magnifying glass? On an x100?? I don’t know what’s worse. That, or the flappy screen rumour. Good grief.

I fear this shows a lack of commitment to the original vision.

    1. Fuji is offering the 28mm equivalent and reviews say it keeps IQ, besides it is not small either.

This one come in the same line of options and I don’t see why it “shows a lack of commitment to the original vision” as the camera design and specifications didn’t change and nobody “has to” buy this stuff. However, for people that were asking Fuji to allow them to shoot with wider or narrower angles it may show a commitment to keep users satisfied, instead.

Till the moment I didn’t buy the wide angle adapter and I don’t know if I’ll ever buy this new one, but it is good to know they are there if you want to.

  3. Hi all,
    Silent reader until now.
    Cool website, interesting people around.
That converter will be a must have for me. The fabulous x100s completed with the option of 50mm equivalent to “extract” portions of the landscape and for portraits of the “more classic” kind… I have my x100s since 9 month and my adored D200 hasn’t seen the light since then… The Fuji around my neck and a “small” (even if not so…) 50mm option in the backpack will make it real hard to take out the heavy gear again…
I already see the desperate expression in my wife’s face when the converter will be available… That will cost me weeks of flowers and passito… 🙂

    1. I also jumped from a D200 to the x100s and have no regrets. Even with the fixed 23mm lens it gets great shots and I can take it everywhere with no debate over which lenses to lug along with me. But that said, a 50mm converter would still be a must buy for me, and most other I assume.

    1. Dpreview suggests around 300$, so I’d go betting for 299$.
Antoine, we could buy it together with Mau. Maybe that way we get it for your 250 bucks… Deal?

  4. Weeellll,
I am not so certain! Just as the wide-one is little bit too narrow (should have been like 24mm), this one is a little to wide, should have been at least like 60mm. Now, one can just as well crop. Besides is too big.

As for myself, I have started using my xe1 with 27mm as travel camera. It is just as small as X100. I miss the hybrid wf, but can live with that.

  5. This is so amazing. I’ve been on the edge of selling my x100 (I have an A7r) but I can’t bring myself to do it, but I prefer 50mm to 35. And now I’ll get it. I have the WCL already, and it’s spectacular.

  6. This is going to be really cool for X100/X100S owners.

Finally, a 50mm version of the X100/X100S. I think a lot of people had been saying it couldn’t or wouldn’t be done.. not physically possible or IQ would not be on par.. I mean we still don’t know how well it will function, but I’m optimistic… the wide angle converter is great.. there was absolutely no loss in IQ, in some strange cases I felt the IQ may have improved slightly.. still, if this new 50mm converter does as good as job as the wide angle did, the X100S will be even more tempting as a great main or backup camera.

FYI, at first I thought the wide angle wouldn’t be enough.. 28mm?.. but, having tried it, it actually added more into the scene than I though possible, originally. Not bad, imho.

Overall, a 28mm, 35mm & 50mm all in an X100/X100S that has a great leaf shutter and great IQ in a compact simple package is wonderful.

From my experience, this kit with all 3 focal lengths would be very cool to carry around because the converter lenses are a lot easier and faster to switch between focal lengths than actually switching whole lenses.

They screw right on (and off, when removing) of the existing 35mm (equiv.) X100/X100S lens really fast. You don’t have to fiddle with buttons, twisting lenses off… never have to worry about getting dirt or dust into the camera cause it will never be exposed.. it’s a lot easier and safer to deal with dust or dirt on the converter lens than it is with a more expensive full lens or an open camera body when changing focal lengths.

For the enthusiast and pro who primarily goes to these 3 focal lengths, it’s a great kit.

Essentially, for the cost of the 2 converter lenses (28mm & 50mm) for $600 new, that’s the same cost as 1 new FX lens alone.. sure, they aren’t exactly the same, but I think one be a bit stuck up and not seeing the potential here and discrediting the X100/X100S camera’s capabilities. The X100/X100S is a great camera by itself and if the IQ & performance holds up with the converter lenses (like it has with the 28mm already), then you can’t really lose or go wrong with all that an X100/X100S could offer you for under $2k.

    1. … forgot to add, although I am excited about the potential to add more value and flexibility to the X100/X100S, I just wished they could have designed the new 50mm converter lens a bit more in line like the wide one.. more straight from the camera instead of getting wider and fluting out at the end.. oh, well… still good to have a 50mm FOV for the X100/X100S.

talking about the end of the new 50mm converter.. I noticed it does not have the bayonet mount like the wide converter or even the fixed 35mm (equiv.) lens.. since it’s obviously wider than the fixed & wide converter lens, it won’t be able to use the same lens hood… hmm.. a new lens hood for this converter lens, I guess?… looks like it may need to be a screw on though the inner filter threads at the front of the lens. I guess we’ll learn more soon enough…

      1. Without such a big opening you will lose light. If you want a 50mm f2 you will have to put up with the big opening otherwise there are smaller converters out there if you don’t mind an f2.8 or f3.5

  7. The most exciting thing about this for me suggests that they’ll be sticking with the form factor and unlikely to squeeze in the (IMO unnecessary) FF sensor any time soon. If they were going to, the lens would need a re-design and as a result, the screw on converters would probably not fit…

Once again Fuji displaying that they are committed to their customers and enhancing the range across the board.

I hope it is as optically good as the 23 and 28mm on the x100(s). The WCL does distort a but but it’s still a great addition.

    Now, where’s my XT1 and 56mm…

    1. I know you read it already. Just for the sake of completenss I’ll post it again. 😉

It should work fine with the EVF. For proper framing in the OVF it will need a firmware update, just like the X100s. And for correct EXIF-Data as well.
