  1. Very interesting. Specs are incorrect on Amazon by the way: the size of QX10 and QX100 are the same, as well as weight.

I might get the QX10, but the shutter lag kills it!

    1. I wonder what would be the wake-up time (and shutter lag) if I attach the lens to the phone permanently and start the app? Could I walk with the phone like this (I mean will it drain the battery or will it go asleep)?

  2. RX100 II is still better because of RAW + possibility to use it with smartphone just like QX100. However, I still think these are awesome products, but for an enthusiastic like myself a fully functioning camera is a better option.

      1. And RX100 doesn’t have WiFi. Online sharing basically requires a computer. And online sharing is what most people do with photos.

    1. according to the requirements no because you need to have the Sony Play Memories mobile app, which is not on WP8 phones 🙁

I learned this when I got my rx100ii and noticed that my Lumia 920 doesn’t have the app! Hopefully sony will develop it seeing that they are focusing on photography and Lumia phones for the past 2 generations have focus on their cameras as a selling point.

      1. Why would Nokia’s focus on photography make Sony more likely to bring PlayMemories to WP? If anything, it makes it less likely.

That said, I hope you get PlayMemories for WP.

        1. i see your point, i guess i was hoping on the idea that sony would perhaps see that some photo enthusiast might own WP8 handsets because of them being some of the best mobile cameras out there.

Hopefully Sony will make a Wp8 app

  3. What happens when you drop it? I have a feeling the worlds first camera you cannot attach a strap to, might be the last.

      1. You will notice that none of the shots after the first feature the strap. Because it looks heinous, and there is no way to carry it or take picture without looking really weird (a lens with a tail hanging off of it). This is an ergonomic nightmare. I really hope the product is a success, but my guess it will be the biggest disaster in terms of actual user experience.

  4. are we sure there is No raw support? I thought i read that you will be able to put in an microsd card in this. wouldn’t that allow you to save raw files?? Obviously the file being sent to the phone will be jpeg

  5. I wonder about the qx100 settings. I love using cameras with manual controls. Will i be able to control iso, shutter speed, and aperture?

    1. I hope so, especially for the QX100. Knowing Sony (and most camera makers, it seems) they’ll cripple it in inexplicable ways.

Crossing my fingers that the PlayMemories app supports it – if only because it might mean that the same functionality for the NEX would get the same features.

  6. What does it all have to “Sony Alpha”? It’s just smartphone camera. And even QX10 won’t be that great with it’s mediocre quality optics.

    1. Perhaps it sounds better in Japanese.

Nowadays there are so many products already on the market that it must be very hard to think of a good new name.

Same problem if you start a band.

      1. Exposure, Shutter, Viewfinder, Capture, Focus, Zoom… You get the point. Add Sony in the front like Google does with Wallet, Maps and Hangouts if the name is already taken.

Sony Alpha, Sony PlayStation, Sony VAIO, Sony Walkman. Sony used to be good with these names. See the Wikipedia article for VAIO name. Pure genius.

“The VAIO logo also represents the integration of analog and digital technology with the ‘VA’ representing an analog wave and the ‘IO’ representing a digital binary code.[3]”

  7. Camera is not for anyone who is somewhat serious about photography. Just read the dpreview write up for it. Summary.

    1) NO SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY
    2) NO MANUAL PRIORITY
    3) NO RAW
    4) NO ABILITY TO CHANGE ISO FOR USER
    5) NO FLASH
    6) NO AF ASSIST LIGHT

= Who is it for? Point-and-shoot crowd who wants to be fashionable? Really? It is more bulky than RX1002 camera. I am not able to change ISO or have RAW files? Seriously? No shutter speed priority. Ridiculous.

    1. What a disappointment. I was hopeful that Sony wouldn’t screw it up, like a total sucker. :/

I can see the point of the QX10 – better camera than what’s on your phone and optical zoom to boot. But I see very little point to the QX100 if it’s so limited- at least for how I use my RX100.

That said, do those limitations you list really matter? I try to watch how people use cameras – not enthusiasts, hobbyists, or pros but general people who have a DSLR, CSC, or nicer camera. Most of them are in full auto or P. I imagine that’s the case for most folks who have purchased an RX100, as hard as it can be to believe for enthusiasts like ourselves. Those people most likely won’t care.

It’s still a big disappointment, though. Pretty lame.

    2. Agree 200%. I was planning to get a QX100 because the idea is great but without raw and all the manual stuff this is a non-starter. Flash I don’t care for.
