Tomorrow (Sept 4 at 16:00 London time) Sony will announce plenty of new stuff. This includes the QX lenscameras, the new 4K camcorders, the new action camera and I am still not sure about this…maybe the 70-200mmII lens and some other lens. What I don’t expect to be announced tomorrow is the NEX-FF camera. The leaked Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 Full Frame should have convinced everyone that Sony will launch the camera. The questions now are…when is it coming? And how will the camera be?
The rumors I got said that there will be a big Sony presentation in late September. And here are some early tidbits on the super secret Sony NEX-FF camera:
(SR4) A source (Thanks Un…S..!!!) that gave me many correct info in the past shared some bits on the upcoming NEX-FF photocamera….actually photocameras (plural!).
He told me that more than two FF-NEXs are under development. There is also a “cheap” model that will be highly competitive to Canon/Nikon FF entry-level cameras! This suggest it could be priced at $2,000 which is the current price of the [shoplink 20844 ebay]Canon 6D (Click here)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 20846 ebay]Nikon D600 (Click here)[/shoplink]. UPDATE: New Question to source: Is the first camera coming in late September?
(SR3) A new source told me that the NEX-FF with kit lens (a new FF G zoom) will be priced at around $3,500. Announcement in a couple of weeks!
What is SR5 for now are the two Zeiss prime lenses, 35mm f/2.8 and 55mm f/1.8. But I have been told at least two more will come!

Sounds awesome! Let’s hope one of the cheap FF E-mount ones is an ILCE 🙂
Hopefully not ! People need a cheap(ish) RX1-like camera with interchangeable lenses, there are plenty of full-frame DSLR cameras to choose from.
Hopefully they will release both. Some lenses are just too big to be adapted on traditional NEX.
Or the FF camera is NEX sized plus a “SLR case/grip” add-on (like the idea of a vertical grip) with electronic connection to control the body exactly like a DSLR. So it becomes a 2-in-1. This add-on casing can also be acted as a protective layer for the actual body, with extended battery, extra connectors (mic, HDMI, data, power).
That will do too.
sadly, knowing sony if they do make it, it will be very expensive
Good news for NEX FF!
Andrea, current prices for the competitors entry models body only are much lower.
My premium reseller offers them for 6D (1629,-€) and D600 (1519,-€).
So the Sony entry level should definetly be below 2k as body only.
you know there is a conversion rate betwenn EUR and USD. $2000 =~ €1515…
Yes but price wise he’s right, they tend to be equal
For example, the SEL50F18 costs $300 in US and 300 € in Europe.
If it’s true that we yanks can buy Sony cameras for the same number of U$D that other are paying for with more valuable euros, we yanks are getting a bargain. Why does Sony do that?
It’s not sony … it the differences between US ad UE market! ..
€ is including VAT, $ is excl. TAX,
amongst other differences.
Wow, that Value Added Tax is substantial! We don’t have that in the USA but we have income tax for those with income. Half the population does not even pay that. But, I digress. As a thrifty yank I’m glad it’s the way it is. If we purchase over the Internet we do not pay any tax, if we are careful how and where we buy it from. Thanks for explaining.
To some extend the price difference can be explained by VAT but that’s not all. In Norway the same SEL50F18 costs $400 and we are already paying minimum 36% income tax.
It’s not just the tax, the default extra year of warranty isn’t free from cost either.

3500 with kit lens is actually not a bad price, how much will the flagship model cost?
-1!
3500 Euros are way to much for a low end NEX-FF bundled with Kit Lens!
I agree. $3500 is not that bad considering that it’s FF mirrorless with a G lens. Are people seriously expecting a cheap G zoom to go with a high-end mirrorless? And nobody said this is the “cheap” model. Could very well be the premium model (G zoom, hello?)
i bet most people who complain the FF NEX is expensive and buy the lowest one will just adapt cheap lenses on it anyway
I know you indicated $, but as you know, Sony has equal values in $ and €.
I bet one NEX FF has the current 2.3 Oled Viewfinder and the other one has the new better one.
And fuji has the 23 1.4 aka 35 1.4 ! I think fuji hit a home run this time!
but is not full frame
why going full frame with a bigger size only for a tiny dof? aps-c or at least MF make sense today
@bere concept of new fullframe nex = small body + bigger sensor. its not only about shallow depth of field. bigger sensor also means more dynamic range and less noise (as long as the sensor pixels dont get too small by excessively inreasing their number). “mf” means medium format? medium format is a totally different league.
Don’t buy it then… and let other live!
Full Frame has better Dynamic Range, Color Depth, and Signal to Noise Ratio compare to APSC.
IMHO, most of the APSC DSLR nowadays, has maximum usable ISO at about ISO800 only.
Not just because of the rise in noise, but also the significant drop in Dynamic Range at high ISO.
Some high end APSC may able to output “clean” ISO1600 file after image processing, however lots of the detail has been wash away because of the aggressive noise reduction.
Full Frame camera is still better than APSC for indoor sport, indoor running pets & kids, etc.
It depends on the task. I can live with ISO6400 of APS-C cameras, cause I don’t print in large sizes. And forget about old NR methods: modern one do wonderful job at detail restoration, not just dropping higher frequencies, so fears of detail loss are highly overrated. Of course, FF sensors gives more, thanks to their higher sensitivities and higher resolutions (again, NR methods benefit higher resolutions and in most cases NR-ed and downscaled higher MP image would be significantly better than lower MP one, despite the advantage of individual pixel sensitivity of latter. Even more so with higher MP larger sensors).
For a ff camera i would like to get my moneys worth.
Since ff is 2.25x the area of c sensor it should be 2.25x the pixels in order to maintain the same resolution.
A ff horizontal picture could be croped vertically yielding the same image as a c shot vertically.
A 24mp c should translate to 56mp ff or a 32mp c should translate to 72mp ff.
For me the resolution is the most important feature.
If sony wants to attract non sony users to thier new universal system the first task is to make switching easy but they need to accomplish the second half…give them a compelling reason to switch.
One version should have each of the following
The highest resolution of any camera.
The highest iso of any camera.
The highest dynamic range of any camera.
Each of these will appeal to a different market segment and some users will want one of each.
What you need is a photo course starting from scratch. Really, keep the good money, you don’t have the competence – yet.
Pro
You make the totally wrong assumption that all a camera does is take pretty pictures and thats all people do woth it.
A photograph is also a reference tool.
As such the primary purpose is to capture every possible detail for later use.
I have little use for pretty birds with no feather detail or pretty trees with no leaf structure.
I currently stitch together multiple images to get enough detail. This is not my preffered method but is necessary to compensate for cameras that only take pretty pictures without details.
Large format is not better because it is actually LOWER resolution in adition to being too big and expensive.
Ive read your books and taken your courses but todays cameras still do not capture the detail.
Your definition of good pictures matches my definition of crap.
While on the subject of good photographs I have slwsys admired the work of Ansel Adams.
Using an 8×10″ view camera he captured great detail and intricate textures. The objects in his landscapes be they trees or rocks or anything all possesed intricate detail and more importantly structure.
What would Ansel Adams think of todays 35mmcameras cameras limited to 24 or 36mp?
First: bigger sensor = better picture, all the rest being equal.
Second: bigger sensor = thinner DOF (up to 135 because MF mostly has slower lenses that negate this advantage).
Third: these technical details make a negligible difference to the quality of your photos. Study and experiments make a lot more, but you need to invest time and dedication.
full frame?

more aka 35/2
35/2, to be exact 😉
Nice. Nice. Playing nicely here.
US $2.000 isn’t really “cheap”, but but already makes me consider to skip the NEX-5T…
compared to the other FF interchangable lens mirrorless camera Leica M240 it is cheap 😀
Cheap FF Nex an ILCE please!!!!
+1
admin, any ideas on the spec of the FF G Zoom? (please let it be constant aperture)
Please let the cheap FF-Nex be with EVF
It’s probably another half year until cheaper one is released and it is very likely not to have the have stabilization or it might still rely on the lens.
I guess that cheaper NEX-FF (NEX-8 ?) will be 24 Mpix and more expensive one will be 32 Mpix.
What does NEX mean in this context — E-mount or a form factor?
If the latter, than ILCs don’t qualify.
“What does NEX mean in this context — E-mount or a form factor?”
I believe both.
now i won’t be able to sleep well tonight, can’t wait to see what the FF NEX looks like, i guess i’ll have a look at which features each one offers and decide which one to buy accordingly!
Andrea
Thanks so much for spreading out all the news over the last few days,
it might have been too much for my heart if it was all at once.
How many will now cancel orders for 16-70mm Zeiss?
What about a new Nex7 successor? …
well, since 2011 i have enjoyed using sony alphas. i really applaud sony for doing the advancements that they have, but now they just seem to disappoint, specially customers in europe. only offering one A mount full frame at the price of 2500 euros, no other option for those who like sony and want full frame. well i sold all my sony stuff and got a canon 6d at the reasonable price of 1450 euros. maybe one day sony will realize that there are people who actually enjoyed what the alpha series had to offer and maybe they will make something attractive and reasonably priced instead of just shoving NEX down everybodys throat.but till then its another brand for me, thanks sony but no thanks
the argument is understandable…unfortunately true
You sold all your Sony stuff and lost money just to buy a cheaper body from Canon?
Lack of patience.
He’ll come back, dont worry.
Surprised? That’s what people do when they need to get things done: they buy a more suitable tool. Computer and gadget freaks are a different story of course.
Yep, surprised, that is why I asked him the question. Your comment doesn’t make any sense in the context of my question, though.
Who makes no sense again? Whoops a geeko.
You, again.
actually i didnt loose any money, i actually turned in nice profit due to the fact that sony in the USA is super cheap and thats where i bought my stuff; whereas sony europe loves to rape their loyal customers and simply charge a lot more and europe is where i sold my stuff. i really hope to come back to sony, i really do, but at the moment they just have nothing which can compete with the queality of a sub 2000 dollar full frame like the 6d……… because they simply dont offer a sub 2000 dollar full frame.
I see. Good that you managed the resale. Yeah, agreed, not having a camera to fill that gap is bad for them right now. I think Canikon are playing on their strength and selling these bodies with very small or non-existent profit to fight what is coming from Sony. Let’s hope that Sony does bring something nice to the table (although I am pretty confident they will).
Well, I think you will not be looking back. Once you get to see the Canon color rendition, you will not want to go back to Sony cameras except for compactness reasons.
belive me, i already amazed by the quality of the 6d, and at a pretty amazing price at that.
I hear you. And let me add: over the Alpha 99, the Canons have proper viewfinders and a degree of usability that make one addicted. You just shoot and she does what you want, she does not stand in the way so to speak. It might not strike you at once, because it’s easy to get used to good things, but I usually notice a step back more than a step up. I tried an Alpha 99 a while back, I was all eager the first minutes but then I quickly handed it back.
Maybe we can expect for a version without AA filter !??.. Like RX1 and RX1r…
I am going to assume NEX-FF actually means E-mount FF.
It’s FE-Mount which means your E-Mount lenses will work, but in APS-C crop mode and the A-Mount lenses will work but with a 26mm adaptor, thats on the FF Nex body.
Then with the DSLR style body they are attempting to implement a sliding sensor which means an FE-Mount and native support for E-Mount and A-Mount, but in a bigger body.
Great news for the E Mount crowd, but where is the A Mount love??? :/
Isn’t it a rather moot point? By by buying a single adapter all our Alpha lenses become fully functional on a FF E mount camera. No?
But there are no rumors about such FF adapter with quick focus and full support of A-lenses. Current LAEA1 – ^%$@, LAEA2 – to big and cost as half of lens.
Now look at Four Thirds. For m4/3 olympus provide a adapter FT->MFT, but FT mout (almost)dead a years ago.
True AlinGlow, I’m hoping this means that a hybrid body is in the works that will accept and support both Alpha and E-mount lenses (and legacy with an adapter). That has been rumored. If not, then let me start that rumor effective immediately.
Z shift should provide fast autofocus for any lens if it works well.
No E mount bodies yet support IBIS, save other things.
It will become a moot point, but we aren’t there yet.
+1
Adapter isn’t an option, nor ever will be. The day Sony decides to force people into using adapters will be my (and probably many other) people last day with Sony.
I don’t know how you can raise such demand (and speak for many others). Before this Sony FF, there is no other universal platform to speak of. So yes, if you don’t want to stay with Sony, then go right ahead to other brand and be locked into one brand only. Why would Sony produce cameras of their own with others’ mounts? To satisfy the absurd need of individual that can’t deal with the use of adapter like a spoiled brat?
Please explain me. Why would use Canon or Nikon users Sony camera with their lenses instead of the original brand camera?
They would only do sp if sony offerred a substantially better camera than anything the competition does.
Features like the hgest redolution or highest iso or hoghest dynamic range.
animalsbybarry – you live in alternative universe where noone even knows a term “investment in a gear”. Bodies come and go – even if Sony would release camera that’s best in everything and offers 2EV advantage in high ISOs – most people would still not even consider buying it and dumping Canon or Nikon.
For a serious photography you need reliable gear – and using adapters automatically makes in unreliable (who will give you an insurance money when they found out that you’ve broken your lens while using it on an adaptor?!) – you need flashes, you need accessories, you need customer service, and so on and so on.
Something that Sony does not offer for NEX-FF, or actually: ANY E-mount camera (as far as I know even FS series camcoders aren’t covered by D2D service).
Lenslall
No one needs to give up anything to buy another universal body..
The new body would just be an addition to be used when most appropriate.
I bet the “cheaper” option will sell like hot cakes, especially if it retains the RF form factor, no DSLR shaped body for me, thanks (or else I’d go with the excelletn 6D/D600 cheaper with more lens options !).
+1
Don’t worry, I am sure Sony knows this 🙂
More lens options?! I thought you enjoyed shooting with legacy glass….
+1 FF in RF form will make me happy….
I’ll only buy way after reviews are in, just making sure there won’t be any clicking issues/overheating problems just like the 5N/NEX7… Had to take both of them back…I’ll wait this time around.
But exciting nonetheless !
Andrea,
Any idea what the price is for the more expensive FF NEX?
no, but the goodnews is a second trusted sources confirmed the rumor yet. Now waiting for details to post this as SR5!
Andrea – any idea whether one of the ff lenses will be a macro? That would be the main thing stopping me from grabbing a cheap ff nex…
you can just use any macro you want on e-mount already, it’s not like you need autofocus for macro…
True – but I tend to use mine as a short telephoto too (in which case af is very helpful).
Z shift sensor should provide suto focus to any lens as well as additional close focus range.
I agree that nothing compares to a true macro and nex is completely lacking in that.
Any news on cheap FF A-mount camera?
Andrea, will there be a M-mount version Nex-FF?
You can already use ANY m-mount lens via a simple adapter on any NEX camera, and you will with all the FF E-Mount bodies as well.
Don’t like adapters. Don’t know why, but got the impression, it lowers IQ. Will see…
A decent adapter shouldn’t – provided it fits well and doesn’t add more glass
An adaptor, with no optics of its own, can’t possibly lower the IQ – unless it has reflective surfaces inside, leaks light, or something like that.
If you want an “M-mount version” use an adapter ~ or buy a Leica. M mount cannot be used for autofocus and there is no real provision for non-mechanical communication between lens and body.
lets hope these FF nex have good video , especially if it has olympus 5 axis ibis , they will be fantastic
Having both APS-C and FF NEX bodies means my legacy lens count suddenly doubles 😉 My 40, 50, 60, 75, 135, 200, 300…
The FF NEX will have to become a disruption in the camera world!
I bet the “cheaper” one will be an enormous commercial hit !!!
I’d love if they made an entry-level alpha FF camera (with a similar body to the A57) Maybe that’ll happen in the next generation of mirrorless SLT’s… (SLR, or whatever)
I sold my A100 and A700 today.
So I am waiting…
Farking Sony. Why can’t you just make ONE NEX-FF model so I won’t have to choose?
Or at least release them all at the same time so people don’t have to wait for a premium or budget version.
+/- 100 posts on NEX FF before it happens. We’re already at 53. I’m taking the over. 🙂
Admin
My longer comments are going to moderation my shorter ones dont.
Does the filter tag long coments?
Any indication about the resolution we can expect? I have some nice Canon glass that deserves more pixel …
Many users of non sony lenses believe thier lenses are the sharpest best lenses tere are.
To make the new sony universal camera irresitable to then the best strategy would be to produce the highest resolution camera made to match thier highest resolution lenses.
Whether thier lenses are actually better or not is irrelevent. If they believe they are the best it will require the best camera to entice them over.
Many brands have nice lenses. Didn’t want to say that Canon’s are the best, but I have them. What I don’t have is solid high res body.
I totally agree. High res lenses (regardless of brand ) deserve a high resolution camera to maximize thier potential.
Lenses don’t “deserve” anything. These are just tools.
Oh, so sad. Nothing about the NEX 6 or NEX 7 successor. Looking forward to the NEX FF though, but it is way to expansive for me.
Since there are no new NEX Rangefinder with Viewfinder APS-C whatever cameras to come soon, I am going to buy a Fuji X-E1.
Maybe I’ll buy a FF NEX in a year or so. See you then 😉
I rather expected an updated Nex 7 with its successor than a Cheap Nex FF camera. Because like with hotels rooms, we dont have bargain without lowering the quality of services( soundproofing, size of the room, etc…). In other words i think that to get a cheap Nex FF camera they will downgrade other features of the Nex 7 which makes it so particular…
Andrea, I think a lot of us are confused/curious about how the price rumor ($3500) is affected by the rumor of MULTIPLE NEX-FF cameras. Specifically is the $3500 w/ kit lens price for the higher- or lower-end camera?
If it is for a higher end camera and the kit G zoom lives up to its pedigree then $3500 is a very reasonable price I think.
Well, the low-end would cost you $2000 as rumored. This $3500 kit would not be that since I doubt any “kit” would warrant the additional $1500.
Right, I assumed that too but others seem to be assuming otherwise plus the “kit” is a G lens so while $1500 seems excessive it could still be a hefty discount over the street price of the lens itself.
All the rumors so far indicate that Sony is aiming low and on the safe side. For a G zoom to be around $2000 a piece, it should be 2.8 (not f/4 or variable). And that would not mean aiming low and safe. The lens will be ginormous as well, quite bad to be advertised as a kit. Well, unless the “cheap” model is not exactly $2000 :D.
Again, not disagreeing with your logic just hoping for some clarification. The rumored price on the NEX-FF has bounced around a LOT! I’m not wealthy so I’ll need to be saving my pennies to afford this one.
Just curious to know if the cheaper NEX FF would take Canon and Nikon lenses as well?
Yes, same e-mount same adapter options. Now some Canon/Nikon adapters have baffles which improve performance with APS-C sized sensors but will create horrible vignetting on a full-frame sensor. I believe the latest metabones fixed this. Remember the VG900 has been out for a long time. Look for adapters that are compatible with that and they will be compatible with any future FF-NEX.
Why do we talk adapters here? From one of the earlier rumors, I understtod that the NEX FF would attract Canon and Nikon users. I thought that they can use the NEX FF body with their Canon and Nikon lenses without any adapters. If we still need adapters, then I do not believe that Nikon and Canon users will be attracted towards the NEX FF!
the previous rumor is only for shifting a sensor to autofocus, and so (if rumors are correct) autofocus can be achieved with manual focus lenses. you will still need to have the adapter to mount the lens, but you don’t need the connections to focus with those lenses
26min for moderation even though there s no forbidden or adult explicit words or insult :p in my message?
The system sucks! We will switch over on Disquis in one month!
Disquis?! Oh for f*** sake. No.
*goes away sad*
@Admin, do you have any information if any of the FF-Nex will have the rumored sensor shift AF? This would be my dream, Actually If it works I would be willing to pay more or less any price!
$2000 is more like it. Glad to hear that is a possibility.
I just realized that I’m being completely hypocritical. With the a3000 I thought it was a bad idea to start it at low end, and here I am whining that the NEX-FF will start at the high end. Ah, well… 🙂
Haha, nice. Just say you changed your mind between posts.
I thought about buying another A99v but I think I will wait till end of this month to see if Sony really announces this anytime soon.
I may want to go all E mount or E mount + Fuji in next year , oh and Sony needs better PC tethering system.
+1 on the tethering.
+1
It’s not only price or low end/high end that matters.
If the specs i want isn’t included , i don’t buy the camera.
I’m using the site http://snapsort.com to compare and choose the most interesting mirrorless camera for me and unfortunatelly, there s no real good competitors against sony… fuji or canon or samsung suck in that branch
Try comparing with m43 offerings. They’re mirrorless too, and the olympus 5 axis stabilization works great. Lens selection is extensive too, except for the lack of PC lenses.
Fuji has an excellent lens line-up. If they would release a normal Bayer matrix X-E1 version, Fuji would get much more customers (I know I would want one just to use that awesome 14mm). However, with the current off-putting propriety Fuji matrix, Sony definitely has the best all-rounder camera system out there. Lenses are trickled filling up the holes in the line-up. Any other player is not serious enough, and m4/3 is fading since they no longer hold the size advantage and soon the AF advantage.
The cheaper NEX-FF is a NEX-5 with FF sensor, without viewfinder? Don’t bother…
Great, now Sony will have FOUR incomplete/non-competitive lens systems.
Yep. That’s exactly what’s going to happen.
And sadly – it seems like Sony doesn’t have any will at all to complete at least one of them (regardless which one would that be).
Will there be any new adaptor to convert all current full frame A-mount lens to use on FF-NEX? It is a must for users having full gears of A-mount lens like me to really consider FF-NEX. Otherwise, NEX-7 is still the best and no way to FF-NEX.
This adapter already exists. It was released with VG-900.
