(SR5) UPDATED: New QX “Smart Shot” pictures! Has in Image Stabilization!

And here are a couple of new pictures of the QX10 “lenscamera”. As you see it comes in white too (via Digicameinfo). I also got info from my sources (some of the info matches with Digicaminfo sources). So here are the news:

1) The name of these cameras is actually “Smart Shot“. It’s a mix between Smart-phone and Cyber-Shot.

2) The SmartShot lenses have in lens stabilization!

3) Again, it’s compatible with all Android and iOS devices via Playmemories APP (the new version will come out soon. My sources tested the BETA version). Connection via Wi-Fi/NFC

4) Videos in HD video 1080/30p, format MP4. Can be recorded with low noise even in dark places.

5) The captured image is saved automatically in both the smartphone and memory in the camera.

6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.

7) The QX10 has the same 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and  f/3,3-5.9 lens as the Sony WX150 ($400 on Amazon). WIll be priced at $250.

8) The QX100  costs $450. That is $300 less than the price of the RX100MII camera ($748 here at Amazon) that features the same sensor and lens! Greta pricing! You can get the best compact camera yet on market for $300 less.

Announcement on Tuesday (Spetember 4). Follow the event live on SonyAlphaRumors!!!

IMPORTANT: I promise you to post an image of a new E-mount camera the day after the event. Stay tuned 🙂

UPDATE: Some more images of the QX10 and QX100:

  1. when the camera and the lens is the same, does it really matter if it has in-body image stabilisation or in-lens stabilisation?

    1. Optical-based stabilization= ILIS, sensor-shift=IBIS. Not necessarily true, technically, but that’s how I understand it.

    2. The really crucial difference is optical vs. electronic. Often cheap compacts with stabs. only offer the latter. And even then it’s not ‘real’ electronics IS you get in advanced video cameras but just another word for high (useless) ISO.

      1. How many shots can take with the battery?..I think, due to the small size it can’t take more then 100 shots…

        1. With no evf or screen it won’t be a big battery hog. You can’t compare usage with a typical camera using a LCD and evf.

  2. I’ll be very fun to use it with the Samsung Galaxy NX.
Make an expensive camera even more expensive.

“Yo, dawg, I’ve heard you like smartphones and cameras, so I….”

  3. in-body IS? unless you call optical IS in-body IS. and indeed it is inbody-is since it is build-in lens.

It is hard to believe it will sport sensor-is, since wx150 itself has lens IS

    1. I’m not part of the “younger crowd” but I will be buying one to use with my Galaxy S3. Considering the size (about the size of a squashed golf ball), you will have the opportunity to make some really good quality shots using your phone as the Viewfinder and storage and this as the higher quality lens and sensor. Good job, Sony!

  4. Electronic shutter or mechanical shutter? Is IS worth it on an electronic shutter in most cases? Not quite a low light beast.

    1. The RX100 is a very capable low light shooter and there is no reason to believe the QX100 wont be anything different. Certainly a heck of an improvement over any current phone’s camera.

  5. Any ideas if this beauty will be able to utilize the flash of the smartphone? It will be connected to the phone wirelessly, therefore I wonder how the shutter lag and flash lag will be managed.

  6. You made an mistake

The Sensor is not 1/2,3 inch, its an 1/2,3″ (the ” doesnt stand for “inch” surprisingly, its for “type”)

So its an 1/2,3type (or just 1/2,3″) Sensor as the Sensor is actually _much_ smaller than 1/2,3 inch

1/2,3 inch would be 0,43 inch but the Sensor actually is 0,28 inch which is only a bit more than the half of 0,43

    1. For comparison an APS-C is 1,05 inch and an FullFrame Sensor have 1,70 inch, so 0,28 inch is about the size of your smallest finger nail or even smaller.

          1. Already have, what are you missing? Better yet, just do some measuring and stfu next time, a-hole.

          2. Wow, Jason, nicely put. What I am missing is where an APS-C sensor is “much larger than 1 inch”. The only dimension where an APS-C sensor is bigger than an inch is its diagonal and then only barely. And the RX100 doesn’t have a 1″ sensor, no matter what dimension you choose. As already pointed out by MdB these are simply designations, not actual measurements.
So, as I already said, check your own link and do some measuring.

        1. That guy above is mentally impaired, but for this matter he has a point, a 1/2.3″ sensor is actually the sensor size of a…1/2.3″ video tube( or something, I don’t remember the exact name, go wiki it), which is physically smaller than a sensor that’s actually 1/2.3″ diagonally.

        2. An APS-C Sensor is 22,2×14,8mm

If you have only a _bit_ of math knowledge you can easly calculate the an APS-C Sensor is barely 1 inch.

An Full Frame Sensor have 36x24mm, that is ~1,7 inch

The RX100 _doesnt_ have an 1 inch Sensor.

It have an 1″ Sensor which is _not_ 1 inch.

If it would have an 1″ sensor at an 3:2 aspect ratio it would be an APS-C Sensor whic it isnt.

The 1″ Sensor of the RX100 have 12.8×9.6 mm

          a²+b²=c²

          12.8²+9.6²=256

The sqrt of 256 is 16

          16mm are ~0.63inch

The 1″ Sensor of Sony have a diagonal of 0.63inch, (in fact its 0.62992126)

Thats very simple math and nothing to argue about!

    2. Uhmmmm no, it is a 1/2.3″ type sensor. Or 1/2.3 inch type sensor. The RX100 is a 1″ type sensor. This is a format system that goes back to old camera tubes. The ” does not mean type. Also, NO image sensor is measured on the diagonal – Only noobs who think they measure them like their TV think that.

        1. No it comes from a diameter measurement of the video tube, it has nothing to actually do with the sensor and measuring the diagonal is irrelevant anyway. But anyway, my point is a LOT of people still think that 35mm is measured across the sensor 😉

      1. Every time I see “sensor size discussions” I’m thinking: They should have dropped the 1/N” inch-notation in favor of X x Y mm a long time ago and save lots of trouble for everybody. But they just won’t 🙂

  7. Hy Andrea. Is there any rumor about an “Windows Phone 8” app to take control. Or just iO`s and Android. Because, Sony made also Win 8 apps to control their BRAVIA TV`s. Thanks.

    1. Whatever the battery life…I find it quite a nice touch to have a small lcd with the battery icon on the module itself. I wonder if the Zeiss module has the same.

      1. This is designed to use the LCD from your smartphone and on some built in LCD on the device…there are already actual P&S cameras for this…this is a lens camera, not a camera camera.

        1. cant see if the battery is built in or removable.

and im a little bit concerned that this thing is using constant wi-fi/NFC to connect to your device which will affect battery life.

maybe you could connect it via usb to your smart device for a little extra juice in desperate situations.

          1. its got a on/off, so when its not connected it’ll go into deep sleep? and then can be woken up when you want to connect to the wifi

  8. Smart Shot is much better than ExpressOn or whatever… Should we expect a Cyberphone from Sony in the near future :)?

“I promise you to post an image of a new E-mount camera the day after the event.”

Someone might beat you to it and you may regret not sharing them with us earlier…

    1. I think Sony will not make a APSC size sensor RX10,
because if the RX10 have a zoom lens the size will be much larger than the RX100,
      may be similar to RX1.

I dont think many people will buy this RX10, because there are many NEX with APSC sensor already.

  9. Interesting techno stuff, but i confess i can’t handle much more impatience about more rumors about new sony camera that can use nikkor G and canon lenses too…
Plz Andrea, do u know at The moment if that camera is in Nex shape Or Dslt shape?
    Thanks

    1. I think this lens-camera will utilize the processing from the app on the smartphone and not something internal….although not positive.

    2. RAW ? these camera are a complement for smartphone owner, consider yourself happy if there is manual control. It’s for p&s shooter, not amateur 🙂 I guess there is dozen of scene mode like pet, children, party, familly, sunset, sport, candle light, hdr, pano, all the situation you’ll live.

  10. I like innovation, but this makes it almost certain that Sony won’t produce a RX100 with a Android phone back – think Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, only with a superb camera module and great pocketability.

I would have preferred it over this, however these “tiny” cameras bring many new use-cases (especially after the first price drops and availability of on the used market). I hope it it/will be possible to manage more than one device with one app, although I fear it won’t be.

    1. Think of it this way: use S4 zoom for daytime pictures ( it has 1/2.33″ sensor like QX10 and most compacts ) and S4 + QX100 for low light. At least when you don’t have your ILC around :).

    1. Would be cool, through pretty unlikey as NEX-5T doesn’t run Android. (and Sony supposedly said they won’t implement Android).

    1. Now that’s an interesting use case and they’d be about the perfect size too! Wonder if there is a way you trigger 1, 2 or many of these simultaneously…

  11. I have just one question about these lenses/cameras. Are they going to be usable without the pone? Let’s say a want to configure the camera in manual or aperture mode, ISO 200, f 7.1. Will it be able to remember those setting while it is separated from the phone, an the phone is in my pocket? If not it will be pretty useless

    1. Not sure they have a shutter button… Or any way to frame your shot – but I guess that won’t bother you with it taped to your shoe 😉

  12. admin, please release the pic of new E camera eariler….we cannot wait….or other website like Digicameinfo may release earlier…

    1. I knwo that. I may post it earlier. But I do this because I want to work with other sources to get more info.

  13. You can see “Cyber-Shot” written on both lens-camera pictures (on the QX10 it is less obvious but it’s a “C” not an “S”), and yet you still think it will be called “Smart Shot” ? :))

  14. What’s interesting is that the mounts are not magnetic, as can be clearly seen. You attach the camera by pushing and rotating it into the permanent smartphone mount. Not bad and much safer than a magnetic mount.

    1. Have you seen the images when attached to a smartphone? Not at all that large and nowhere near “bonkers huge”.

    1. Well, the QX must be perfekt for Hasselblad:
They will manufacture a frame from wood and/or carbon, put a $450 QX10 into a hole in the front and a $500 Android phone into a slot in the back and sell the bundle for $5000.
They will call it Hasselblad Modula and throw in a “Lifetime technology upgrade guarantee” as their unique selling point: Whenever a new lens or display&control module will be released, a customer can send in his old Hasselblad Modula for a factory upgrade to the new version. At reasonable costs, say just $2500, that’s half the price of a new camera.
The Hasselblad product marketing guy must be dancing in a circle about this opportunity.

    2. The Nokia 1020 has a grip attachment which also gives you longer battery life as well as functioning as a camera grip (as the camera is the USP of the 1020).

Hasselblad could, in theory, make an ostrich testicle grip ala 1020 grip with the module attached. $1500 for the pleasure.

    3. They will attach the lenses on a push-up bra and sell them in pairs, people can wear them on the beach. The bra has solar power and 2 USB ports which you can use to charge the lens and your phone.

  15. It will be interesting if there will be a QX1,
Full Frame Sensor with Zeiss Lens.
    (Just Dreaming…)

IF QX10 and QX100 sell good, Sony may make one. 🙂
    Just like the FF Nex.

    1. The first concept art from Sony actually did show an RX1 module…

But I doubt that’s going to be a real product anytime soon.

  16. if RX100 -> QX100 then chances are, we’ll never see an APS RX-10 (and instead RX10 becomes this QX10 thingy with a body)…
On the other hand, Sony naming convention rarely makes any sense in the first place.

  17. “6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.”
what about aperture? the control is on the lensor? i dont see any.

  18. Will be great for street photography. Small and stealth, take pictures while holding the lens/camera in one hand and look the other way with your phone camera controller in other. Shooting from the hip will also be more incognito. Could even be made to clip into clothing. I have a RX1 for street photography and all around carry everywhere camera. This one may be next. Thanks for thinking outside the box Sony!

  19. I originally thought this was a silly idea. But after seeing these photos, I think this could really become the way of the future. No need to carry around camera bodies anymore. Just bring the lens with you. And this fixes the biggest limitation of cell phone cameras — high image quality (especially in low light situations). Plus, you can hold them at any angle to take photos (high, low, up, down). If Sony came out with an APS-C or full frame sensor lens like this one, I might actually buy one.

  20. there is some sort of mount on both lenses if i interpret both images correctly. will it utilize some kind of smartphone holder/adapter?

  21. I really like the idea of having RX100 II for $450 but I’m also having a hard time figuring how practical this can be.

    1. Yeah, I need to wait for some reviews in action. But the QX100 has potential to be my backup camera to my 6D when I need to go smaller.

  22. If the quality of the image of QX100 will be same like RX100, no doubt i will buy one. This is a lens, anytime i can change the compatible body, and phone function sure more than just a camera… I guess…

  23. 1080/30P is really old school
Sony should advance his chips to record upto 120fps in 1080p which will be the new standard in coming 3 years

also, a brand new WX150 only cost $150

  24. Wonder what the range of the WiFi is? Might make an interesting remote control camera for photographs from unusual locations (eg from a remote control plane…).

  25. QX100 will never really replace RX100. I think that the QX control app will be much simpler and without so many modes and settings as in RX. Not to mention the lag in view and the lack of flash. But QX is a very nice idea and i may buy it when the price will go down.

    1. Agree,
I like Sony to make more innovation products.
However, I dont think many people will buy the QX100.
because of the size, control, response, battery life, lack of flash, grip, etc.

If I want a camera that fit the pocket, I will get the RX100MK2.
If I accept the size the QX100, I would prefer get a NEX with the small zoom kit lens.

    1. Speak for yourself. The idea of being able to easily compose a shot without contorting yourself is great! Sure, maybe not a lot of people need this tech, but I’m sure many do want it.

  26. 1. Will it shoot RAW?
    2. Will it operate independently of the phone in, say 5m range, or attached to phone only, or will it be totally free to shoot without a screen?
    3. YES people WILL attach it to android cameras with phone modules – like Samsung S4 zoom. Will look strange to say the least.

  27. i find it so funny that just a few weeks ago u could get a nex3 somthing with its 16-50mm lens for less then 400$ …and this crap cam is priced at over 700$ or this new gadget is priced at almost that deal’s price.

is this like some sort of test where people who actually pay for that stuff should be banned from holding positions that involves using ..hrmmm brains ? 🙂

  28. Hope the lag between the camera and phone will not be a bad as the 5R connected to my phone. It’s pretty much useless with the 5R at the moment.

  29. does this lens work on sony xperia p or no
and what is the specifications does the mobile need to work on it
and does it in egypt or no ? thanx
