The long rumored 85mm f/1.8 just got leaked at Xitek? UPDATE_3: Trusted sources checked the image again. The image is close to the real lens but not the final production version. This will not be the final lens design!
I remind you to read the previous post. Astonishing rumors to be published soon on SAR! For the first time I have the feeling Sony has the chance to catch up with Nikon and Canon! And tell all Nikon-Canon-Pentax lens owners that they can use this 85mm Zeiss lens and their G-K or EF lens on the same camera…With AF!

72mm thread, sounds reasonable, shiny blue badge too!
source forum says it is photoshopped, can you verify?
where?
a couple of comments says the dimensions are not right and it is based on the 16-70 photo, of course I cant verify if anyone on that site
Nope! looks real because it only has a focusing ring and not zoom ring so it should be a tele-prime.
I own the zeiss 85 f/1.4 with 72mm filter thread. And that lens is way bigger than the mount already. I can assure you that should look even bigger on the E-mount.
This back looks to be copied straight from 16-70mm zeiss that has 55mm filter thread.
The focusing ring looks legit. No other focusing ring on E mount lacks a front flush end. This one is not flush with the front, so a new design could be likely.
Also 72mm looks proportional to the mount too.
My vote is for a legit photo.
I just noticed is just not flush either back or front.
MMMM
MMMMMMM
I totally agree that if you look at the alpha mount Zeiss 85, you’ll see this can’t be a 72mm filter.
I just held up my 10-18, which has a 62mm filter to that photo and it lined up pretty well at the mount end where it flares.
It also looks like a different finish in front of the focus ring, than that behind the focus ring.
Not that I don’t want it to be true!
With OSS?
What are the dimensions of that beast ?
This is the A-mount replacement. A-mount is dead, dead, dead. We are now transitioning to E-mount Alpha. I told this would happen. I told it would happen now too. Andrea, go back and check my posts 6 months ago!
Will do that.
1. Its not sure if its faked
2. It doesnt have Image Stabilisation
Why should i want an not stabilized 85mm from Zeiss?
Its well known that most Zeiss Lenses (especially the 85mm) are quite soft wide open and you need to stepp down to at least 5.6 to get razor sharp images.
85mm at f/5.6 sounds like something you want to handhelt in dawn.
Sarcasm?
Pretty soft wide open……. what?
http://www.photozone.de/sonyalphaff/554-zeissza85f14ff?start=1
LOL wut, no it isn’t. The A-mount 85mm f/1.4 is sharp wide-open. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.
“Its well known that most Zeiss Lenses (especially the 85mm) are quite soft wide open and you need to stepp down to at least 5.6 to get razor sharp images.”
E-mount was always superior to A-mount anyway
Lol, does the mount hold the lens any tighter?
It was designed in digital age, unlike A-mount. It was deigned with shorter flange distance, which became possible by removing mirror that was a legacy left over from film DSLRs. It’s more flexible. It’s more adaptable. You can build thinner cameras with it if you want (nex-5) or thicker cameras if you want (A3000). You can do sensor shift AF (new rumor) with any lens on it.
There is absolutely no doubt its a superior mount.
sensor shift AF is possible with any mount
No, A-mount flange distance restricts type of lenses you can mount on it.
An APS-C 85mm f/1.8 lens that replaced a FF 85mm f/1.4.
Cool story bro.
Dan I predicted this 7 months ago. Go check my post.
I also predicted your last post.
Everybody loves an “I told you so”
But first A-mount has to die.
😉
Is Sony releasing a universal mount?
better.
Modular camera, with interchangeable A / E mount?
That sounded really stupid at first, but maybe it would make some sense after all 😉
Wtf?! tell us aldready! this is against the human rights to torture us like this! We should charge you at Haague otherwise…
Give me 5 days. Next week you will see the picture of ana amzing camera. 5 days. No more 🙂
Post SR2 / SR3 whatever you have 😛
You mean photos if the FF Nex as well as the Nex 7 replacement?
Ahhhh! It hurts so much.
I’m getting myself a provoked coma for 5 days starting now.
AT
We were purposely mislead to believe the NEX ff will be announced in late September. Sony will instead ambush us next week with its release.
What could be possibly better than “universal”?
Intergalactic mount?
AT:
Good one!
Well, if what Sony is going to release is better than a universal mount, it should be a body that mounts A-mount lenses with fast off-sensor PDAF, and E-mount lenses, and as such most other lenses ever produced by any manufacturer via adapters.
I can already see it in front of me: a DSLR that natively mounts A-mount lenses like any DSLT now does, but also has the option to use all other lenses, and E-mount lenses. It will excel in flexibility, and for the first time it will not be a compromise like a NEX with LAEA2 and sub-PDAF-par focusing natively, or like an A-mount body with no access to OSS lenses or nonnative lenses.
That would probably seal the deal for most, but I still doubt Sony is going to release such an amazing product with that kind of functionality. I fear it is not as functional and/or priced as we would like, for example it may not have IBIS since you now have access to OSS E-mount lenses.
However, I am very curious what Andrea will come up with in 5 days, and will hope for some really groundbreaking news!
Looks like a computer rendering to me, especially the Zeiss logo, does not mean it is not a real rendering. 85mm f/1.8 seems to fit the Sony current E-mount schemes. Not sure if faster lenses are being kept for A-mount or just that the size and mass of f/1.4 is unbalanced on E-mount
Many of the official press pictures tend to be renderings.
Damn, very nice if real!
It looks real…until you look harder at the zeiss badge…
Agree! The Zeiss badge is wrong perspective. Look in Photoshop.
A mount 85mm f1.8 sorely missing. It’s worrying seeing all the emphasis on E mount when it’s not the choice of most enthusiast photographers.
Exactly. Sony is really lagging behind with A-mount, and I fear this is because of the emergence of the E-mount. It isn’t really a problem as such, but both systems may come out as not ideal for enthusiasts at this moment.
I think there is a Minolta 85mm 1.8 (a-mount with autofocus), you may want to look into that if you can abide used lenses.
No, all Minolta AF 85s are f/1.4 but they are excellent choices for around 50% of the price of the current Zeiss 85.
Use the 2.8, it’ll do.
It´s a little bit bigger than the SEL-1670F4Z:
http://s14.directupload.net/file/d/3364/ue7kdt2j_jpg.htm
It looks like a fake (Logo too big, 72mm diameter looks too small compared to the G)
Looks like the NEX24F18Z with some Photoshop magic…
Except that the 24 mm looks totally different.
Well the lens body is similar enough to the SEL24F18Z. I could easily do that with Photoshop copy-paste using other lenses for the front and rear.
Sorry SEL24F18Z of course 🙂
If Sony go mirorless way then A-mount is almost for sure dead.
It’s just because E lenses are designed for mirorless, with it’s short 18mm flange focal distance. A-mount have 44.5mm and was designed for mirror/reflex thick bodies.
But….: If you remove the mirror and optical viewfinder completely, then you can have enough space for a variable mounting system without any restrictions, so you could accommodate BOTH A-mount and E-mount in the same body. Wait….Wait….wait!
…”enough space for a variable mounting system without any restrictions”…
Not so true. Image sensor should be at EXACTLY FFD mm from lenses. It’s fixed by design. Otherwise you will get out of focus images.
To be honest Id rather it wasnt a Zeiss lens and it was low priced to match the 50mm or 35mm
+1 My thoughts exactly.
+2 tired of expensive glass. 85mm 1.8 can be sold for £300.00. this will be double and more. we r suckers and they know it.
I was thinking it was just going to be the like the current sony 50mm 1.8 but just 85mm and maybe cost 600.00 but now with the zeiss logo it probably going to cost more than a grand and that sucks
a ZEISS lens? i don’t remember anything in the roadmap said this lens would be a ZEISS lens (very high quality, but very high price and BIG)!!!!
no OSS on 85 mm? can fit only on a future IBIS NEX camera… WTF?
Many people shoot 85mm primes without IBIS or OSS. Downside? Sure, but it doesn’t stop owners of NEX cameras without IBIS from using it.
A fast 85 is a portrait lens. Why someone would want OSS for portraits is beyond me. If there’s no good natural light, then you need reflectors and strobes. Many folks judge camera gear according to a list irrelevant gadgets that aren’t needed and actually force engineering compromise.
And this assumes low natural light doesn’t work with portraits unless you use strobes and reflectors. Countless examples prove that thesis wrong as not every portrait wants to look like a well lit studio shot.
SEL-70400G2 ????
http://www.sony.de/support/de/product/sel-70400g2
A typo. Note that there never was a SEL 70-400 version 1, so why would they name it version 2? 😉
Real.
Hmmm, would rather this were a a”big brother” to the SEL 50mm. A little larger, same great IQ, a bit more expensive, but not a lot. That lens would fly off the shelves!
SAL-120F28 ???
http://www.sony.de/support/de/product/sal-120f28
Hmmm…strange and nice at the same time!
Typo for SAL-20F28 ?
If f1.8 is gonna be 72mm it better cover FF and be sharp as Oly 75mm f1.8
Please make SEL8518 instead… 85mm F/1.8 OSS lens that won’t break my bank…
+ 1
the 50mm 1.8 was a great lens. Want the same quality for the 85mm :3
That’s a nice dream…. but take two of those (85mm, oss, cheap) and it is actually realistic.
Maybe it is a FF lens that’s why it has no OSS.
mmmmm so it’s a Zeiss…they better release a cheap version… I would definitely get the Zeiss version if it gets all the good things you can expect from Zeiss but I’m sure some people would prefer a cheaper version.
Yep, 72mm filter thread seems pretty damn big for an APS-C lens. But DAMN would it be awesome if we really get an 85mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens! This would not only mean the E-Moutn got five (FIVE!!!) Zeiss lenses in one year, it also means I could complete my Zeiss prime line-up with the 12, 24, 50 and 85mm lenses!
There is no reason the 85mm f1.8 should have a 72mm filter thread, unless Sony is standardizing on a couple of thread diameters. The Minolta 85mm f2 MD and the 100mm f2 AF both have 55mm filter threads. The 85mm f1.8 was supposed to be a Sony lens, not a Zeiss one (at least that was the initial rumor, as I understood it). Maybe they changed their minds, or this is a different lens, or this is a fake image.
Agreed. My FF Canon EF 100mm f/2 has a 58mm filter thread, and I believe it’s sister lens, the EF 85mm f/1.8 is the same. These are highly-acclaimed lenses, and being that there is a 62mm precedent for E-mount with the SEL1018 and SEL18200LE, 72mm doesn’t make much sense.
Or maybe we just hit a jackpot, and this lens is for the incoming NEX-FF, otherwise I just don’t see the reason for 72mm thread.
Indeed it is too large for APS-C only. Unless Zeiss tries to make a perfect 85 for that format I presume it covers FF.
Another expensive Zeiss prime? These should be bonus lenses, not the only ones.
If they would do, they would release a cheap 85/2.8 analogue the A-mount. They want to keep sales of there expensive primes high.
Otherwise it would happen same to them than it does to Nikon.
Nikon release a 85/1.8 for roughly a third of the price of the mighty 85/1.4, but with nearly the same performance (except the 2/3 stop disadvantage, which not many are caring about). Sales of the 85/1.4 dropped dramatically.
A 85mm f2.8 would be great, actually.
Yeah +1 Id go for an 85mm f2.8 (if it was appropriately smaller than it’s f1.8 counterpart)
It looks fake as the typography/font doesn’t look like Zeiss at all, but copied and altered from the sel18105/f4 G lens picture.
I also really doubt an aps-c 85/f1.8 lens will have 72mm filter thread and be so long at the same time. Zeiss or no Zeiss.
Is this an APS-C or full frame lens? It’s quite big for a mirrorlens 85mm 1.8. It would be perfect on the upcoming full frame nex!
If true, this would be an ideal lens for me.
The phrase “that will do Zeissly” comes to mind!
Hmm the shininess of the casing is different in front of the focus ring compared to behind so maybe more than one image spliced together?
If it’s real I wonder if it’s APS-C or one of the lenses for the new FF NEX?
If this photo is real I think it’s too big to be APS-C (unless the rumor is wrong and it’s a 1.4).
It would be smart to go full frame for this one and let zeiss eventually cover an aps-c 85mm within their Touit line.
Dont buy zeiss… it is this simple. when you stop buying zeiss expencive stuff then there will be no moneyfor them. the next step will be a lot of sales discounts….
and I am not shure if the lenses are not from china I do not think they make them in old germania … any a real proof?
im sorry if im wrong.. do you ever use the nick “full frame” ?
I think this is Sony Zeiss.
“For the first time I have the feeling Sony has the chance to catch up with Nikon and Canon!”
– for that they would need to release over 10 new A-mount lenses. And by new I mean: New fl/aperture, not just refurbished variants of older lenses. E-mount is light years behind Canon and Nikon so there isn’t even a reason to bother with that.
There is even much mroe to come than you think Sky. Stay tuned.
P.S.: Do not think lens only. Think service too.
This still looks photoshopped. If you take the image of the 18-105, scale down the front to the right diameter, remove the front ring, remove the zoom rocker and place a Zeiss logo there, you basically get the above picture.
And the dimensions are wrong. The size of the mount is known and fixed, and the front of this lens is certainly not 72 mm. It’s 62 mm at most.
I’m tempted to give it a try myself later 🙂
Side note: Sony may well release a 85/1.8. After all, they have previewed an E-mount “mid-telephoto” already in 2010. I’m only saying that the above image is not real.
C’mon, guys! What’s all the fuzz about A-mount death or not? I am an A-mount and FF only addict and IMHO it will be very easy for Sony to design a much simpler A-E adapter (than the current LEA1 and LEA2! If the idea is an e-mount mirrorless FF with on sensor PDAF/CDAF as top of the line, the adapter can actually be just a ring with a male A mount on one side and a female E-mount on the other, plus the electrical contacts. If you still have shaft-driven AF lenses, and extension AF shaft can be easily incorporated in an optional adapter. No more need for an MT and AF motor like the bulky LAE2!
Just make it simple!
modular body
AF on sensor ?
🙂
Many people on Xitek don’t believe that, even the guy who posted it. They found the evidence that the front glass looks pretty much the same as the one on the A-mount 135ZA.
So let’s think it’s a fake one temporarily…
I care about what my sources say. In four years on every picture that got leaked you always here “that’s a fake. i am sure”. And they try to porve that in many ways”look ate the shadows” and so on 🙂
Even if it would not be a real image – as of the fact that you received a trusted message that it will look like this, it is fine for me.
Don’t bother about this nit-picking nerd.
If he’s a hundred percent sure about it, let’s ask him about tomorrow’s lottery numbers… 😛
Look closer. This is not the front of the 135/1.8, it’s the front of the SEL-P18105G.
Can confirm it is for apsc or ff?
APS-C.
If it is for APS-C then why isn’t it designed to look like a Touit lens? I didn’t think we would see more APS-C lenses from Zeiss for E-mounts that weren’t Touits.
Touit would be for Fuji X cameras too.
It’s a Sony Zeiss, not just Zeiss. See 24mm SEL.
Thanks God it is not a Touit.
Have you tried the Touits? Compare there awkward AF versus the Sony Zeiss AF – worlds between…
If this is proportionate image with viewing angle of 15 degrees, size of this lens is 78mm outside diameter by 91mm length to flange
Andrea, it’s a Zeiss, so don’t expect it cheaper than the Touit 32, meaning 799,-. Seemingly Sony likes the 999,- price tag for the Sony Zeiss’.
72 is way to bug now that i think of it.
No reason for this other than super high quality and thats a shame on asc since you cant charge ultimate premium for it.
Therefore i hope this is fake.
“And tell all Nikon-Canon-Pentax lens owners that they can use this 85mm Zeiss lens and their G-K or EF lens on the same camera…With AF!”
Sounds kind of like the sensor will move itself back and forth to focus the old manual focus lenses?
My Minolta MC 85mm/1.7 lens has a 55mm filter thread and it is a full frame lens. There is no way a Zeiss 85/1.8 APC lens would use a 72mm filter. I would bet the photo is faked.
If there is small/independent adapter manufacturers who can make Contax-G and EOS AF adapter, I am sure Sony can do the same. But probably Nikon/Canon would sue Sony for patent violation…
Look what I made in just 20 minutes (click nickname link). Imagine spending 2 more hours on it, and it could look legit.
Andrea can you just tell us if the next revolutionary camera has a RF or DSLR for factor !?? DSLR would kill it for me, but I know some other people would like it better. I’m sure we’d all like to know.
This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
Here’s a hint: we’ve seen comments like yours with every official picture ever released on SAR. All of which (the pictures that is) turned out to be legit. 😉
But this is one of the few times I can say that the image isn’t the real thing. I just updated the pic. Trusted sources took a closer look and found it’s not 100% correct.
It was a joke. Google “this looks shopped meme”
