New RX1R and RX100MII reviews.

The new Sony RX cameras got tested! Here are two new reviews:

1) The RX1R has been reviewed by Photographyblog:

“The RX1R’s photos are very subtly sharper and more detailed than the RX1’s, and unless you shoot a lot of subjects with very fine details like fabrics or man-made patterns, you’ll be hard-pushed to spot any moire or colour aliasing (we couldn’t find any in our sample shots). Even if you do, there are certain techniques that you can employ both during shooting and in post-production, so if out and out resolution is a key requirement then we’d recommend opting for the RX1R”

2) And the RX100MII got tested by the guys from ePhotozine:

The RX100 II’s image quality is noticeably improved over the already good RX100, with impressive noise performance even at high ISO settings up to and including ISO6400, with the multi-frame noise reduction performing significantly better than the previous model. With additional features and greater versatility the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II could be the last compact camera you’ll ever need, and is therefore Highly Recommended.

  1. An already great camera with a small tweak and a great camera improved.

Now, it’s time to cater to the 50mm and 24mm crowd, Sony. It would make the RXx line very appealing to a broader audience.

    1. +2 I would get the 50mm as overall camera, and 24mm for landscapes. Two little beasts to carry around. (I can’t buy both at the same time though)

  2. What happened to the CEO’s commitment to release a next version of camera…only if there is a huge difference ?
RX1R and RX100 mk-2 is almost same as earlier version..except some minor changes (we know R and mk-2 additions).

    1. no comment for RX1R, but you call the RX100m2 a minor change? with a different image sensor, tiltable back screen, and Multi interface hotshoe?

      1. titable screen is huge.

However, it’s actually a feature that should have been in the original RX100 given it’s price IMO.

        1. Perhaps it simply wasn’t technically possible at the time. But what do I know? I don’t work for Sony.

    2. That commitment was for alpha line cameras.
      And RX100m2 has huge improvement.
RX1R is not suposed to be upgrade from RX1.

  3. Hmmm… if Sony improved on some image processing functions (like multi frame)
it would be really nice with a firmware update for RX100.
But I guess that will never come.
With app support such could be possible. Just get the latest version of the app.

    1. My thoughts exactly. No way I’d pay the asking price of the RX100II, images look good have to say, but ooops no viewfinder, no grip on the front either tried the RX100 decent but not enough as the high asking price.

RX1R is a niche product clearly.
Hey I don’t mind but they’ve let A mount lag behind so that’s where the work needs to go IMO.

    1. No perfect camera without a viewfinder sorry.
You can buy the EVF one but cost up the total package and it’s pricey.

    2. Not the best example: in my opinion, while I like the composition, the lights on the left are “burnt” and there’s a lot of unpleasant noise. Maybe shot in b&w it would look like a film grain, but not here.
Anyway, this little P&S is something special.

      1. he had to choose to keep the shadow detail, or keep the highlights in range… what would you choose? my A700 wouldnt be able to pick up so much range in exposure and my big A77 dont even have a stop of advantage in DR over this litle camera!

for me, this picture works great, perfect balance, stretching this camera capabilities to its limits.

          1. so, what did i said that wasnt correct? i never mentioned the Nex-6, the nex-6 is small, but even without a lens is way bigger then a RX100 ( http://j.mp/11pXuqC
), and you can bet that in real life shooting (leave DXOMark numbers at home…) you wont spot any difference in DR between your Nex-6 and the RX100II! and yes, i konw that the A77 has more dynamic range than the RX100, it has a 24mpx APS-C sensor, but its advantage is less then a stop in laboratory measurements, as i mentioned in my post above, and in real life is almost negligible

and who said i dont shoot RAW? even with RAW you have limits to your exposure range (the magic word here is range…), but if you want i can show you some photos, and you can show me some of yours and we can both learn something in the process, but i suspect you will decline…

        1. Hellven, I don’t think I offended anyone, I simply stated my opinion. Personally I would have kept more shadows. And probably I would have taken the photo in b&w. Again, rx100 delivers really good files, considering its dimensions.

  4. I shoot panny, oly and sony and have everything from p&s, m43, apsc and full frame. What camera do I use the most when I am on the go? It is the little gem called the rx100. It is a p&s but it’s iq is good enough that the bigger stuff is left behind when I need portability. Does it go on my paying jobs? No. I also think it and the rx100II are overpriced by $100 each. Actually all of Sony’s stuff is overpriced. But I don’t buy a model when it first comes out anymore. I have learned to wait 6 months. But the bottom line is how much I have enjoyed using the rx100. I love the little thing both in stills and video. Sure there are things it doesn’t do well and there are things I wish it had. But then it is a p&s. It is not a nex or slt. I don’t wish for features that don’t make sense for its size like an evf. But I will give Sony praise and am grateful for having so many choices in gear. It is a wonderful time in the history of photography and it will only get better. Happy shooting.

  5. Admin,

Possible RX100 II news/rumor found on Dpreview forums:

“After waiting for what seems forever amount of time, my Sony Canada order page has finally changed from “Processing” to “Ready for shipment” on 7/15.

When I asked customer service why the delay from 7/8 to 7/15, he said the first batch was held up due to direct request from Sony Marketing in Japan to update firmware. Maybe due to the rumored/unconfirmed issue of softness at base ISO?”

  6. “subjects with very fine details like fabrics or man-made patterns” … Sounds like something our friend Barry here may like 🙂

  7. I wonder which camera & lens were used by the photographer who captured the product shots for Sony. Great shots.

  8. Ha, just get my used RX100 mk1 today. Pretty good camera. Sounds like Mk2 is better but not $300 better than what I paid.
