The two doubts I have on the NEX-FF and A-mount mirrorless.

I am writing this post for my sources. I have two major doubts to sort out:

1) NEX-FF
While the camera should ship in 2014 I am still not 100% sure if what we are going to see in September-October is the final camera, a prototype or just a general presentation of the new system. Please let me know…thanks!

2) A-mount mirrorless
Will there still be some SLT camera before the full transition to the A-mount mirrorles system?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Regarding the FF NEX I’d assume that they’ll come up with a pre-production type – considering that after that still min 4 month are avaialbale for finalization, this would make sense.

I would not consider that there’ll be any SLT camera. And if, than I would bet one coming only for the low end (A58 successor). Any SLT update at higher level would make no sense taking into account that they skipped the A88 shortly before its release.

  2. The only question Alpha users should be concerned about are for the flash system. CaNikon have their strobist community well outfitted. Sony has left us with a new proprietary hot shoe with an overheating F60, a non locking iISO adapter, a 1/2 second wireless delay, and absolutely no hope for 3rd party support for smart radio slave.

No company can promote themselves to professionals without a proper strobist system worthy of 2014 tech advantage. We deserve more than ability to mount dumb radio slaves. Otherwise it’s just a toy camera playing Make.Believe.

Fix it Sony. It’s broken… and embarrassing.

    1. haha, the flash is the least of my concerns 😛 i agree that AF speed is quite up there, its easy to buy a standard iso cable and use it off camera fully manual, ive done this with my yongnuo

  3. Check this post (one of dozens) complaining about the current flash system.

    Fix it Sony.

We want wireless HSS WITHOUT delay.

Release your protocols and partner with 3rd parties to support the new MIS.

Metal FULL SLED flash feet, like your pro competitors.

Built in radio slave and compact transmitter all powered by AA’s so we don’t have to carry different battery types.

A pro caliber speedlight that doesn’t overheat just by looking at it.

Would be fabulous and innovative if you provided a bare bulb option with interchangeable heads… like the old Sunpak 622 and 120J. CaNikon strobists would come running in droves.

Put a PC port on the flash please… like your pro competitors.

Honor your loyal stills photographer evangelists.

A robust flash system would be such an easy thing, and garner so much free publicity and high industry praise. Such a simple win Sony. Don’t be such a videocentric snob Sony. Give us the innovation that Minolta users expect from a flash system.

    1. Completely agree with your points, I have 2 F60M flashes and they suck at events. Constantly overheating… I contacted Sony Canada and asked if this was normal for their flagship flash. Their reply was they are designed for casual use and are not for events. $600 flash better be professional that doesn’t even work with most manual triggers. Yongnuo is my backup but most reliable flash, its fully manual, never overheats, and never misses a moment with its very fast recycle time. Sony’s flash is feature rich with great design (except the plastic foot, and no sync socket) but not useable due to excessive overheating and no radio trigger support.

      1. Sharpshooter – that reply from Sony is frankly amazing! I have recently decided against buying the f60. I’ll keep struggling with my f58+adapter on my a99. I shoot mostly Manila flash or just no flash these days anyway.

  4. Don’t worry admin. I remember the Emount 50mm F1.8 or carl zeiss is released, more than half a year or eight months later we managed to see it in store. Even if it is released in August or October but start shipping in February 2014, I consider it fast. Sony uses non engine ship, perhaps small sail that depend on wind direction to do its shipment. LOL.

    1. yes. Working on that list too. But first I want to sort out the two questions about NEX-FF and A-mount SLT.

  5. Theoretically, a wireless radio transmitter shouldn’t even need batteries for the Sony MIS. There are power terminals in the new shoe which power the optional EVF. That could also power a wireless radio transmitter. That would be a simple game changer… if of course Sony released an F80 with built in receiver that didn’t overheat.

    1. Agree to that kind of convenient usage sony could supply.

The WL delay is in fact an issue, however with a transmitter you can overcome that.

The overheating issue is in my mind some overrated. Every flash gun tends to overheat in case excessive usage.
The sony 60F is handling this in an annoying way – it turns the unit off without pre-warning.

    2. A native, officially supported TTL radio trigger would be awesome.

But probably Sony would charge £££$$$$ for it!

On a similar “product gap” theme, where is the f44 mid-level flash? Where is the macro ring flash? I’d love a native mount ring flash….

          1. I hope the f43m will drop in price soon enough then. Surely it must!

I’m interested to know if the f43m will be get a reputation for easy overheating….

  6. With a 26mm flange distance they could use some E lenses on the FF, until they develop a new series, which will be compatible with a small adapter to the E cameras also.
