The Sony RX100 price history in Germany (Source: Idealo).
For the first time I found new RX100 cameras priced under 500 Euro in Europe -> [shoplink 18236 ebay]Photodirect (eBay Germany)[/shoplink]. And in US you can find them for less than $600 on eBay (here on Slidoo). Does it mean the successor is going to be announced soon?
Rumors is floating around a web created by the Chinese Forum XITEK. It says the RX200 is going to be announced the first week of June. It will have a 28-140mm f/1.4-2.2 zoom lens. The body is more or less the same of the RX100 but it includes a pop-up viewfinder.
I hope my sources can tell me more about it soon but to me this sounds like a fake rumor. A 28-140mm with that bright lens and having the same large 1 inch sensor would require a huge lens! It’s almost impossible to maintain the current RX100 size!

Take it as a joke, this is from the rumor section of the forum where people post the craziest rumors, no source, no credits, nothing.
agree. I even didn’t rank this (maybe i shouòdl give it a SR1). Anyway, it’s a good excuse to contact sources and ask them for info 🙂
Pop-up viewfinder? What does it means?
IMO viewfinder is the only missing step to make RX-100 completely awesome.
IMO the hot shoe would be more important. The new hot shoe could accept an EVF or a flash, or XLR mic inputs, etc…
Add-in EVF would stick like a tumour. And you would have do disassemble it every time before you put camera in pocket.
Adding new ports to tiny camera is bad idea, and nobody needs these analogue inputs that catch every noise available around. Digital camera should use digital i/o.
That would be king of bokeh
It is a strange comment. You do realize the impact of the sensor size on the DOF, right? Some of us use, on our full frame bodies, lenses such as the Leica 35 Lux, 75lux, the Noct, the Canon 85 1.2 or even the canon 135 f/2. With such a small sensor, we are very far from the kingdom. And by the way, breaking with the “all in focus” look of compacts still doesn’t guarantee a good bokeh. Some lenses have a very shallow depth of field but render the out of focus areas in a very ugly manner.
It would be king of nothing, but will be just good for available light photography. Small sensors don’t allow shallow DoF and thats why I use Leica D Lux 6. It gives 24mm equivalent in FF with the speed of f/1.4 so I don’t use a flash but not get shallow DoF.
I’ve actually just been doing some DoF test shots. I just picked up the Nikon FT-1 adapter for use with my Nikon1 V1 (I have both the V1 and RX100) which also has a 1″ type sensor. I mounted my 50mm f1.4 on it and… it have to say… the DoF and bokeh are very beautiful! I haven’t posted the images yet, but I’ll likely start putting them up next week.
Doable but would be pointless without rubber eyecup to me.
i think you are strange, not my comment.
by the way, congratulations for your stuff.
A 28-140/1.4-2.2 in that Size is not possible with an 1″ Sensor for that camera size!
pop-up viewfinder = fake.
One of the post in the thread mentioned that the original post is a notorious one that constantly post fake rumor…..
What focal length and aperture zoom lens could you fit onto a 1″ sensor if the camera were shaped like the HX300 series? 24-70/2.0 possible?
28-140mm f/1.4-2.2
a lot of ppl asked for ultrazoom on that well-performing 1″ sensor, so it perfectly makes sense
FAKE!
Must fake.
In China, my country, people always have good dreams. Many people are dreaming if the RX100 have a better grip, a wider range of focal length, the wider the wide-angle, a larger aperture, with a standard hot shoe and EVF viewfinder, etc.
I do not know what is causing these, I can only say that they do not understand the RX100. Many people enjoy the RX100, and praised its design intent.
If this RX200 rumor is true(only if), then the RX series becomes R1 derivative, which is unacceptable.
This lens spec+EVF is possible – but in bridge cam format only. Of course it should be wider than 28mm too.
It would not be called RX200 in bridge cam. RX10 maybe, something other that RX probably.
This is a pop up viewfinder:

Something like it maybe? 🙂
cool!
If there is such a camera in the making, it can’t be in the RXxxx series.
It would require a lens with focal length between 10.4mm to 51.9mm and maximum aperture size up to 23.6mm for the tele end. Way too big !! for the RXxxx form factor.
However, it’s quite possible to build this if the tele end is not fast at all and more like a f/6.2. So the rumour may not be that far off the mark, if that’s the case.
Maybe for an RX1000 with a 1/1.7″ sensor.
I have to say the fast, long lens does sound *almost* too good to be true.
I say *almost* because Sony has obviously made some advancements in reducing lens size recently as is evident in their latest compact, the Cybershot HX50 – a 9.6oz camera with a 24-720mm zoom!!!
I know that’s a compact sensor (1/2.3″) but still…
There’s some engineering magic happening there.
Quick comparison:
RX100 8.5oz 16mm (1″ type) sensor 28-100mm f1.8-4.9
HX50 9.6oz 08mm (1/2.3″) sensor 24-720mm f3.5-6.3
So… is this possible (maybe as a G-series instead of a Zeiss?)
RX200 9.0oz 16mm (1″ type) sensor 28-140mm f1.4-2.2 ????
It would be nice, but HX50 has max aperture size 20.5mm. and it is 64mm high. This rumoured camera would have 23.6mm max aperture, so you’d expect it to be about 68mm high. But RX100 is only 59mm high. So either the speed of tele end is not as good as its rumoured or it will come in another body form.
Actually RX100 is too small for what I think high end PS should be. Nikon P7700 is a form factor that has great potential and ergonomics. My dream camera is a large sensor and zoom PS by Sony in similar form factor.
Give me 28-140mm F1.4-2.2 lens on 1″ sensor, I don’t care about the size. It could be as big as HX300 and that would be OK AFAIC.
When someone writes an paragraph he/she retains the thought of a user in his/her mind that how a user can be aware of it.
Therefore that’s why this paragraph is outstdanding. Thanks!
The lens spec is clearly incorrect for a camera that size i.e. the front elements would need to be more than twice the size of the current RX100.
If it’s true the sensor has got to be smaller perhaps type 1/2.3 inch or type 1/1.7 inch.
An RX1000, perhaps, to extend the bottom end of the RX compact range.
The 28-140mm f/1.4-2.2 lens spec is close to the Olympus XZ10 lens spec (26-130mm f/1.8-2.7 lens) with a type 1/2.3 inch sensor.
And aren’t Olympus and Sony collaborating on lens design?
To compete with the Panasonic LF-1 compact with EVF?
A hotshoe would be interesting for external flash usage!!
