I’ve just received confirmation from the trusted Japanese source. Fuji stepped on the gas and is ready to release the X-E1 successor in October.
It will have the X-Trans sensor II of the X100S (16MP), a better LCD, Lens Modulation Optimizer and WiFi.
It’s said to come on October 18, so stay tuned and follow Fujirumors via facebook, twitter and RSS feed.
Remember that new sources told me that there will be one more camera released the same day.

Yay !!..btw any news on X-Pro2?
Not sure I really want the X-trans II sensor. Haven’t seen really any speed different between the x100s and the xe1. The xe1 sensor seems to have a bit better dynamic range. Now a better low light EVF with less lag would be better.
I agree Joe. I have used both the X100s and the XE-1 on vacation, though wasn’t able to compare them head to head, but in general I don’t remember the X100s feeling much faster than the latest firmware XE-1. I’m coming around to the idea that the AF is just not going to be SLR fast and I could get a cheap SLR if necessary. But it seems more reasonable to have faster operational speed in a successor, less shutter lag, faster startup time, faster write to disk etc. When I pan around in the EVF I want a faster FPS, when I take a shot, I want to immediately be returned to the current live view (I’ve disabled image review).
Speed is most important for the EVF refresh etc. imho ! And if that is indeed the case, it may be able to ‘process’ the CDAF faster as well, considering that it’s using the very same live-view image to do so. If it’s like the X100 vs X100s in amount of improvements then i assume they will have worked on the ‘little things’ the most, things that don’t necessarily show up on a specs sheet, but just make it a better experience in general. (hope so)
Should also have the unique split screen focusing feature that probably nobody is using. 😛 But it’s kinda cool anyway.
ps. A ‘cheap’ SLR doesn’t have very good AF either. That is often the biggest difference with a semi pro SLR versus entry-level. And that’s not just so for tracking.
Im sure its in the works, Think after the last set of debugging of everything to make good cameras great there holding it till they are sure X E1B or what ever the name is right. Good news as Im holding off getting my next one as I need PAF that works.
is it possible to have full manual control on video announced too?
What’s ‘lens modulation optimizer’?
http://fujifilm-x.com/development_story/en/processor/ (Lens Modulation Optimiser processing made possible by integrated development of lenses, sensors and processors. This is the secret to resolving diffraction)
Cheers Patrick.
Hey, Joe, it might surprise you, but a camera’s sensor has nothing to do with the speed of af or camera in general. It’s the processor that takes care of this.))
X100s have PDAF system on sensor… orher X series “only slower” CDAF
Oleg, if you understand so very little, why do you post comments?
The answer is – You probably don’t even know how little you understand…
Oh god… I was ABOUT to buy a X-E1… now I don’t know what to do… :/
Wait first, the new X-E1s might have updates you might like. If you still like the previous one, it will be cheaper when the new one comes out.
I think just wait a little to see. Then maybe it’ll be the same as the X100 vs X100s where both would be a great deal, just one might (eventually) be half the price of the other. 🙂
Can’t wait! this can possibly be the Fuji I have been waiting for.
yesteday, that chinese website http://xjrumo.com/2013/09/26/x-e2/ also said there will be a press event in Shanghai on Oct 18. they also mention touch screen
Hard to believe my camera body replacement is coming out before my favorite focal length lens (10-24). RELEASE THE ULTRAWIDE ZOOM ALREADY
Did the roadmap change? In any case, screaming certainly won’t.
This is great news. However, I am waiting for an X-Pro 1 successor, which would need to be a much more significant upgrade than PDAF and WiFi. For me to upgrade, it will need the following:
– the organic sensor and/or a full frame sensor
– no AA filter, just like the current model – never going back to unnecessary blur.
– a brighter, larger EVF/OVF
– hopefully a more accurate OVF, though not a deal breaker
– improved AF accuracy and speed
Without the above, it really would not be a worthwhile upgrade, as the X-Pro 1 is fantastic already.
With Sony introducing full frame options, as much as I don’t like the size and design of their NEX series cameras, Fuji must step it up with near future cameras. In my opinion, they must provide a full frame X-Pro 2 in early to mid 2014, along with some significant improvements to their APS-C cameras. And, the full frame version must come in for around $2000 – $2250.
Might be a long wait for Fuji FF sensor… Do you honestly think that they would create an FF camera, when their XF lens lineup supports only APS-C sized sensor?
Dream on. There’s no FF coming from fuji, and Sonys FF Nex is predicted to come in at $3000, so let the FF freaks empty their bank accounts for it. Put a Sony FF image side by side with an Xp1 and you won’t know the difference, so why bother.
Well, to be honest, you can. I have no preference between one system and the next but on pure image quality, I have to give it to the FF Sony over the APS-C Fuji at this point in time.
I run a Sony RX1 alongside a Fuji X-E1 wherever I go.
You can kiss FF – certainly ILC – it’s not in line with what Fuji are doing – their cameras are all about portability – you may one day get something like a x1000s with fixed lens and FF – now that would be something – most people who buy the Fuji xe1 and pro1 have come from larger cameras and lenses and are tired of the bulk…
It is funny how closed minded many people are. A full frame version of the X-Pro would compliment the existing cameras, and will provide those coming from full frame DSLRs with a full frame option in a smaller mirrorless system.
While I agree that most people, including myself, buying into the Fuji system are looking for a compact camera, it doesn’t mean that all mirrorless cameras need to be tiny. Personally, I bought an X-Pro 1 over an X-E1 (which my wife uses) in part because I prefer the size of the X-Pro 1 (the X-E1 is a little too small for me) and in part because of the OVF.
Although the existing lenses will not cover full frame, there is no reason why Fuji couldn’t produce a set of fast primes (forget the slow zooms) for full frame
But would it make them money? FF will be costly to bring out. At some point they may but after the X line is filled up.
Yay! I was probably one of the first buyers of x-e1 in my country. I was hoping they would fix all the issues with firmware. Now I’m pretty much disappointed. Yes, we’ve got so called focus peaking (worst implementation I’ve seen so far). No, we have no minimum shutter speed setting with auto iso. No, we have no real RAW support. No, we have none of the all promissed blows and whistles. Resell value of my x-e1 is less than 50% of what I paid. I like the toy I bought for the price of full frame camera. It’s small, I can take it every where, It takes RAW images which look crap. Yes I can shoot jpeg but…
I’m not sure why your X-E1 RAW files look like crap, but my X-pro 1 RAW files look great with minimal tweaking.
Try Capture One for raw processing. while focus peaking could be much improved, it has helped me in some situations. minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO is a must though, and they are apparently working on it for a future firmware update.
I think you’re being a little drastic don’t you?
A camera isn’t an investment, it’s a tool. Go out there and make wonderful photos with it.
If you didn’t like the camera, why did you buy it?
Also, if you were an early adopter, you had 3 or 4 firmware updates to fix a number of issues. So… the camera got better and you’re complaining?
I know people like to whine, but you seem to really be clutching at straws here.
You knew everything you have bought will lose a lot of value, especially when the next model is released, so why on earth are you surprised about this?
Oh please….what a joke post this is, sony boy. Go get yer DSLR out and get outta here whiner.
Happy days.
I’d find it odd if the Pro isn’t the second camera.
If it isn’t, that can only mean an X-Pro2 rather than a X-Pro1s.
IE: If not an incremental bump for the Pro, then they’d be holding out for a bigger release (maybe the organic sensor? although that seems too far off).
24MP organic x-trans ? Well, maybe a new x-trans, but the organic sensor would be waaay too long a wait, because any later than early 2014, would be too long ! And organic sensors are probably 2015 material (at least) i think.
marcin, I find the xe-1 focus peaking not worse than on my Nex5n. A lot depends on how much contrast your lens has. I mostly use high contrast contax g lenses on the xe-1.
Raw support: PhotoNinja published a x-trans supporting pre release yesterday. It is already a bit better than C1 IMHO.
http://www.picturecode.com/download_prerelease.php
I find the raw images converted with C1 and PhotoNinja superb.
I am really suprised to hear Fuji plans to update the X-E1 after just one year. The X-E1 is their ‘advanced amateur camera’ like in 7 series in the good old minolta days or the 5 series for canon. Normally, companies keep these cameras current for at least 2 if not 3 years to protect the investments of their customers and, most of all, of the retailers. I guess such a fast move will piss many people off.
In particular as the X-E1 is still a very good camera doesn’t need updating in my eyes.
The X-Pro1, although being their top model, has fallen behind in several areas (slow autofocus, low res monitor, …). I already put the mony aside to buy an X-Pro2 the day it gets released 🙂
Hope this will be the second announcement in October…
But consider the number of updates from Sony and Olympus.
No surprises.
I think the only thing Fuji needs is to really get strong performance and an AF that really works. Hopefully they will be able to hit up Panasonic and get help on autofocusing and performance issues.
I must be alone in thinking this. But I can’t think of anything that will make me upgrade at this point. Love the X-Pro 1 the way it is since the firmware updates.
I think you have hit on something. An X-E1s (or whatever it will be called) with some evolutionary updates isn’t likely intended to get current owners of an X-E1 or X-Pro1 to “upgrade”. It’s designed to get new customers.
Though I suspect there will be plenty of existing customers that will get the latest and greatest anyway.
Yep. Bingo. Right on. Serial upgraders aside, these are fine cameras for working pros, so good enough for the rest of us. There will continue to be the ding dongs that think the camera should autofocus faster than a FF DSLR while chasing a fire truck on foot through New York City but you gotta have those whiners to make fun of em.
I find it strange that people always act like it should be ‘upgrade worthy’ when they already have one, it’s not like the factories stop producing immediately after you’ve bought one. New people are always looking for a camera, and new ones are always being made. They’re not asking anybody to upgrade, they’re just keeping up with demand. It’s only logical that they offer the best they can, when they can. right.
Agreed.
And if Fuji wanted to push for people buying the latest, they would not release updates.
They want new users. And existing users to buy lenses.
You are not alone Glenn. I totally agree … The only improvements I’d really love is better focus peaking (which hopefully can be had via firmware) and for a new body I’d really love weather sealing…anything else is “nice to have” (better af, wifi, etc.) or even “getting in the way” (touch screen, flip screen, video, etc) at this point.
Isaac…i think you’re right. People will complain especially in a forum. Can’t help but think they’ve just bought into the wrong system. If speed is the issue then an slr is the answer. For me it’s never been a problem and i have less focussing issues in terms of accuracy than my dslrs. If they’re not happy with their Fujis they can switch to something else easily enough…and whine about that.
Hopefully, we can start getting some leaked teaser pictures or specs from some of the more trusted sources.
Might just not be the best timing for an update. To many owners it would still seem good enough to rather invest in lenses. You would probably see the GASers considering it and those people would be holding off to see what Sony brings to the table.
Also we now have an uncertain situation regarding the lenses. For a year and a half now we pretty much knew what was going to happen, updates to the lens roadmap were predictable and/or mildly surprising. Also we (=I) don’t know what is holding off Sigma or Tamron.
So at the very least they would need to present an update to the lens roadmap with new lenses. Personally I think the xf18 is going to be “replaced” whichever way.
Given the pace in new cameras from Sony and Olympus, the need to keep iterating.
You’re right though, the market for lenses is what Fuji want you to invest in.
Updates to the camera body is to keep competative to new users.
Question: Why is there no tele converter for msc?
Any updates on an X100 firmware release?
no… seems that the bugs to fix are more than expected. But I’m confident that once it will be released it will be really awesome 😉
Any updates on an X100s firmware release? ^ o ^
Just be happy that you have one. ^ o ^
Hopefully will have the X E1 successor the face detection! It is really a big help if you like to take portraits or hand your camera to someone else.
My X-E1 is great as is, I wouldn’t trade it no matter what!!!
Sure, I could use some software support for raw,
or
better and faster focus which is PDAF based and has real focus tracking
and
I would be happy to have shorter viewfinder\screen lags
or
weather sealing or a better grip, longer battery life, ISO of 100, flash sync speed of similar cameras on the market.
faster frame rate, better controls in video and maybe a dedicated video button, shutter speed of 1/8000, IBIS, more responsive camera, stronger flash, more viewfinder coverage.
screen resolution of similar cameras on the market, a tilt screen.
Like any other mirrorless in the market I wish my X-E1 would show the exposure information in the viewfinder while you change your focus point and will not make me constantly switch modes.
I would be happy for better ergonomics that will prevent me from accidentally pushing buttons and scrolling. and I wish that there would be only one way to insert the battery – the right way.
and I could use a separate grip which do not prevent me from changing the battery and the memory card.
I would be happy if the EVF would have been less prone to extraneous light and
I wish I could set shutter speed limit in Auto ISO. and I wish it had touch screen and WIFI.
!BUT! all the most competing mirrorless cameras have this feature, so what’s the point? I wouldn’t feel so special…
Fuji – please don’t add no more “magical” features, just X-e1 according to the list.
+1
The XE1 needs this, the newer cheaper cameras have some worthwhile features, obviously the min shutter speed, the A1 has a useful feature with Image stabilising lenses that detect movement and will up the auto speed. Face detection for when you hand the camera to a novice to take a picture and Live view upon half press (or optional full time), EVF sensor off when not against your face to save battery (needs lighting restart or you can always turn the eye senor off). And Spot AE linked to focus point please.
If Fuji really want to keep their current base happy, they should upfront let everyone know what of the upgrades they will fix via FW for the current XE1. Phase Focus obviously not, but Min ISO Speed (already promised), face detection. If their honest, it will keep people loyal and they will buy into the lenses and xpro2,xe2 in time. New customers can benefit from XE1s or those that need the features not supported by FW upgrades can buy in also. Fuji’s customer service is a major plus point at the moment. (even if I do think we are sometimes a little too greatful for FW fixes that should not have been right in the first place, I have a LUMIX G1 their first attempt at micro 4/3, it has min iso shutter, face detection, focus tracking etc…) But still all credit to Fuji for addressing these.
Thats why there is such a shortage of x100s’s.
The chips are being used for the X-E1s / X-E2
I couldn’t justify upgrading my x-e1 unless everything about that camera was upgraded starting with an EVF that doesn’t lag and an AF system that is considerably better.
After firmware upgrades the AF is now adequate for slow and deliberate types of photography but can pull of some surprises with good technique with the 6fps burst mode. No, in case anyone is thinking I’m not using my x-e1 as a canon 1Dx substitute, my emphasis is reponsiveness in SAF and an EVF that doesn’t lag.
After this a new sensor at 24mp with a one stop iso performance, DR is already great but I wish I could use most of that DR at lower iso’s, tilt or flip high res screen, larger & slightly more pronounced grip, larger magnification EVF like the Em1 1.48x maybe a few extra gimmicks like built in timelapse, HDR and improved video.
I don’t think I’ll see any of that this year from Fuji but I’m patient because I shoot with more than one system and I’ll be enjoying my Olympus Em1 soon enough along side my x-e1.
I don’t think I’ll be adding any lenses to my two lens xf system until I see a large improvement in AF and EVF responsiveness but I’ll continue to use my Fuji as it compliments my Olympus stuff and they balance each other out.
Sony will have Olympus’ s 5 axis IBIS, a glorious and non-laggy evf, excellent video, super SAF system among other things but
they don’t have Fuji colour and lenses.
Great Colour and lenses are exactly what Olympus does and it seems I’m attracted most to these two things but interestingly these companies have not been the best at AF. Olympus AF with the first coupke generation of Pens was very ordinary to say the least and now they’re on top of the game, who knows maybe Fuji can twist Panasonics arm?
I can only guess what the upgraded features would be. Since it will be using the same sensor as the 100s and comes right at the heels of E-M1, expect PDAF to be very fast. A dual processor and a bigger buffer to handle the complex de-mosaicing algorithm. Better EVF and tiltable LCD. Focus peaking in 3 colors. Wider implementation of auto ISO.
My girlfriend is considering moving to a Fuji setup, she can have my X-E1 if the new one is just ‘snappier’ If operating times in general are better – write speed, af, power on, VF refresh are all improved it’s probably enough to get a sale from me. Perfectly happy with just about everything else, it’s just a bit sluggish – it’s a truly brilliant little camera otherwise.
I’m also hoping for faster operational speed, which is the sole reason I’ve been holding out. I have an x100 and sometimes it’s just beyond frustrating. Handling the xe1 gives me the same feeling. But once an xe2 comes out, I’ll sell the x100 and grab that.
I just need a better AF precision. I love the camera but I am getting a little tired of missing shots. At night, events, weddings, its really difficult to take that perfect shot. JPEG setting to +1 in sharpness helps a lot, but RAW, which I could post-edit, remains soft…
Take the X-E1, make everything inside a little bit faster and better (AF), use the sensor from X100s and the screen of the X-M1 (tiltable), add some the things mentioned above and i know my x-mas gift already in October 🙂
I wanted to buy the x-e1 but I couldn’t live with the lag of the evf. The x100s is a different story, so maybe some of this new found ability will rub of the new camera…I love my S. don’t under estimate the improvements in this camera over the x-e1 and pro1 and obviously over the old x100…it is a totally different camera and worth every penny I paid…
Great! Can’t wait for it 🙂
What about the possibility of the XE=2 being full frame?
