Metabones announced that it will add autofocus support on [shoplink 15341 ebay]EF to NEX Smart Adapter II (they are here on eBay)[/shoplink]. What follows is the official press release:
—
Vancouver, Canada, November 7, 2012 – Metabones adds autofocus support for select Canon lenses to its Smart Adapter II (for mounting EF and EF-S mount lenses on Sony NEX cameras).
To ensure the best possible accuracy, autofocus is enabled only for late-model Canon-brand lenses (introduced circa 2006 or later).
Significant effort has been put into focus accuracy research and we conclude that only lenses capable of the most precise control in their autofocus mechanisms could reliably deliver pixel-accurate results when adapted to Sony NEX cameras. Autofocus is disabled for most older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, but aperture control, image stabilization (if applicable), EXIF and other features will continue to work just like before.
Autofocus speed is significantly slower than on a DSLR camera. Phase detection feature of NEX-5R/6 is not used at this time. As a result, autofocus speed of a Canon EF/EF-S lens on Sony NEX is usually slower than on the new Canon EOS M. Compared with Sony’s own A-mount lens adapters, Metabones Smart Adapter II is faster than LA-EA1 but slower than the translucent-mirror-equipped LA-EA2.
Smart Adapter II with autofocus support is available right now at the same price (US$399+applicable tax/duty) from Metabones’ distributors in many countries all over the world and the Metabones online shop. Existing Smart Adapter II customers may send their units back for an upgrade for a nominal shipping/handling charge of $50.

Metabones screwed all the version one owners. Never again will I purchase anything from them. To much money and no allegiance to their customers. I’ll wait for the knock off’s.
So, your version one adapter stopped working now? Did they promise you there would never be a better adapter created in the future, forcing you to buy their version one adapter? Did they stop supporting their version one adapter?
If they were smart, yes, they would offer version one owners a break on upgrading to the new version II, but….
Bottom line, glad to see they were able to improve their adapter. Other Canon lens owners will be happy at least.
No, the problem is that they’ve said “The unit has an USB port so that the user can update adapter firmware to add useful features in the future, such as AF”.
Now we have to send the adapter to them so that THEY can use the USB port to update it themselves.
Would you mind citing where you get that misinformation from? Was that really the offical word from Metabones, or false rumour given by an unreliable source? The data port on the side of the adapter is NOT USB at all.
Could be an unofficial source, sorry for the confusion.
Confused? Metabones stated that the version one adapter was firmware up gradable and implied they were working on adding AF, which they did but not to this adapter. My point is that they are not to be trusted and I would recommend not buying their unit, but getting a less expensive version. If you truly love them than go ahead and trow your money away, no confusion about that.
Good news for V1 owners for Metabones recently introduced an upgrade for you, too. It was a hardware upgrade including a circuit board replacement, and changing the rectangular opening to a round opening with extra anti-reflection measures. The only V2 feature missing after the hardware upgrade would be the detachable Arca-Swiss style quick release.
“Existing Smart Adapter II customers may send their units back for an upgrade for a nominal shipping/handling charge of $50.”
$50 shipping/handling is screwing their v1 customers?
Guess what, you’ll be screwed once again when you’ll try to use one of all these adapters with the fortchoming Full Frame NEX or when you’re buying a NEX-VG900 now.
What does version 2 have to do with version 1?
NEX is the ultimate platform camera!
Is there any EOS to A-Mount adapter?
EF mount has a 44mm flange focal distance. Sony A-mount is 44.5mm, making it impossible (short of corrective optics).
$400-500 for an adapter??? Get real!!!
When you have L glass that’s $1000-$10000 a pop, $500 ain’t much to make it work on a different manufacturers camera.
slower AF than LA-EA2? blergh WHATS THE POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!
isn’t LA-EA2 supposed to focus pretty fast? I know LA-EA1 is slow as molasses, but… (I own that one, and man, that is ridiculously slow…)
