Vote the cameras that Sony should release for 2013!

A week ago I asked SAR readers to send me a list of camera suggestions. I simplified your very long wishlist in a few type of cameras to realize that poll. Please be aware that we are not going to talk about the details of the single camera yet (like price, features and so on). For now the only goal is to understand what type of camera you would need from Sony. Please be honest. Vote the camera you would really buy knowing that some of the options will be very pricey! Thanks!

[poll id=”126″]

Ask your friends to participate the poll! More votes we have more Sony will listen….hopefully!

Note: because you can select more than one camera the sum of the percentage will be over 100%. A percentage of lets’ say 43% close to one of the options means that 43% of all single voters that participated selected that specific option.

  1. EVF is for anachronics. Why enlarge the cameras for an EVF ? Those should always be an optional add-on.

This said, I would like an RX200 with 14MP 1″ sensor with on-sensor PDAF, and smaller than the current RX100 🙂

      1. And those two comments are the reason we have no viewfinder at all with the RX1.

Would have prefered anything built into the body. Hate shooting with the LCD… especially when its fixed.

        1. You misunderstood. Here’s how it should be:

And those two comments are the reason we have an option to choose viewfinder for the RX1. OVF for those who like optical viewfinders, and EVF for those who like advantages it gives. Oh, and finally: No viewfinder for those who want as portable camera as it gets.

          See? The world of choices.

ps. your comment is exactly the reason why we’ll never see fully modular camera (you know – one without any bayonet, any viewfinder, or perhaps: even any sensor, with everything fully optional). Some people are just unable to comprehend this idea and will complain that the body doesn’t have anything and how it sux.

          1. It will never happen but I would love to be able to custom order a camera just as you can a computer from DELL
            Body size,build,mount,sensor,AF module,viewfinder,
buffer, software options etc with expected delivery less than 3 months.

          2. > OVF for those who like optical viewfinders, and EVF for those who like advantages it gives.

            Well said!

          3. Absolutely agree, and this is why I’m ecstatic that the RX-1 has no VF built in, and finally bit the bullet and pre ordered one last night.

          4. I have come to like the idea of an accessory EVF, especially the hinged type. A swivel or even a remote link could be nice as well. On the down side, they tend to be expensive. Understandable with the extra connections, inventory costs and so on, but still extra bucks. Maybe they could be a little less costly bundled with the camera.

    1. 36mpx FF Nex would be the ideal landscape photographers camera..great with wide angle lenses and plenty of res to print or crop while being easy to carry!

  2. Yes it always amuses me when people whine about no EVF…if you insist on evf and external flash at the same time then you’re probably better off with a DSLR/SLT. All an integrated EVF does it jack up the price and make the camera bigger. A tilt-screen is way more important than integrated EVF.

    1. Yes, this is probably the future. But currently, displays are not bright enough in my opinion. It’s too often that the environment light is too bright and I need the EVF.

    2. … except when you are out in bright sunlight and can not focus on a video shoot with a damn. The EVF provides better concentration and focus in any light. Increased stability is also a plus since one can shoot video with the arms supported by the elbows in contact with the body torso. Sure far better then trying to shoot a video in bright light trying to squint at what you are looking on the screen and holding the camera as if you are holding a steering wheel to drive a car. If a camera does NOT have an EVF, it’s generally a non-consideration. I am waiting for the release of the NEX-6 as such (to replace the just sold NEX-7).

      1. EVF also gives you one hugely important advantage over external screen – you stabilize your camera with your body.

That’s one of the reasons why these idiots filming with DSLRs put huge stickers at the rear LCD hoping to make an EVF out of it. Instead of getting SLT with proper EVF. 😉

  3. Why in the vote there are no APS-C alfa-cameras? For example, a77 with sensor from a580 and optical viewfinder.

    1. very good question.
But considering that in recent times most of SAR readers are NEX users that don’t care shit about A-mount – it wouldn’t get much votes anyway. *eyerolls*
As I said elsewhere: there should be a separate website – sonynexrumors – so that all the haters would have a place to stay.

      1. As already stated before, NEX is part of the Alpha brand and they are very much linked in terms of hardware – LA-EA2 adapter for example, that enables the two systems to share lenses.

I don’t know where you get your us and them attitude when it comes to the two systems. I’m happily using both and think that splitting this website into two is a terrible idea.

        1. The answer is quite easy: I get it from reading all of the comments from Canon/Nikon users caring only about NEX stuff and posting “Sony should abandon A-mount” BS whenever possible.

    2. I can understand the questions/speculations about an hypotetic A77 upgrade next year (because of reviewed by dPr more than one year ago…) but not for the A99, which is the best digital SLR camera ever produced …!

How can we imagine that Sony would make enough sales back, for a period as short as only one year, with a poll like this? :-/

If we disclosed confidential information through SAR, is not to help them to kill the DSLR Sony market back … (lol)

Moreover, it is not certain that we can see a new camera with all the amazing features of the A99 already have, for very longtime from Sony…! Because of the Sony-Hasselblad DSLR projects in common …

A new FF in 2013 is a pure unfounded supposition (except from Hassy…). And this poll dosen’t make sense, since we know he don’t incorporate the first Hasselblad DSLR ever with alpha mount embedded!

  4. I currently own a NEX-7 and apart from the availability of the 24MM Zeiss lense I am pretty happy. However there are a few minor things that are annoying, the record button, 10 second timer (not good for landscapes/tripod work) etc.

The thing that is really holding me back from investing in Sony is their lack of firmware upgrades. Their answer to fixing issues appears to be the release of a new camera. I can understand this approach for the lower end consumer market, sub £500 but the NEX-7 is aimed at the enthusiast/pro market. If you are spending £1,000+ on a body then you are not going to replace it in 6 months. So much of a modern camera is controlled by firmware, a good investment in this direction could provide more substantial updates like improving image quality, better jpeg engine etc.

Also this approach greatly devalues the model that is being replaced so even if you try to sell it to upgrade you are not going to get a lot.

If Sony don’t invest in their customers then they will leave. As we know more and more manufactures are using Sony sensors so differentiation will come down to firmware and lenses.

    Rant over! 🙂

    1. +10
I don’t Care about new bodies ! Sony should propose a new firmware for the nex 7 which is available just since a few mounth !
Something great could be to give the possibility to download new apps via usb!

  5. Somehow I couldn’t vote for all of them. Maybe that is not allowed?

I want them all. I want all the cameras. I need m43, APS-C, FF and medium format.

A99 is too expensive. That’s why I need A88. But for my medium format needs I am willing to pay more.

And NEX. Of course I need a FF NEX. Current NEX cameras do not fully cover my photographic needs. I need a High ISO, low noise 14-bit camera.

I need IBIS with NEX. Some of my shots are blurry and I hate that.

Some people say I cannot take better pictures with a better camera. They must be jealous that I can spend that kind of money (but A99 is still too expensive) and that I have so much time. If I take all my cameras with me and take at least one photo with each, I am sure at least one will be good.

Oh, I want OVF by the way. Terribly.

    1. I just realized: I am very pissed at Sony.

I want those cameras now! God knows how many great shots I have missed because I didn’t have the right camera.

      Sony, come on. Help me.

      1. I think I am going to jump ship.

        Yeah, I think I should.

Help me Sony. I don’t know how to swim.

        I also want cheap Zeiss.

    1. I see your point but I think a lot of us (here) hoping for a FF NEX want it to use RF and legacy glass. Plus at this point the NEX system has plenty of lenses out now or in the first half of 2013. Are they affordable? No. That’s to bad but that’s what the kit zooms are for!

    1. I totally agree.

The list is definitely missing some very important camera possibilities.

Some combinations are simply not there.!!!

Like, uhm… full-frame vertical sensor camera? Where is it?

    2. I just want to see an APS-C A-Mount camera… Might be small and light-weight, mirrorless and EVF, but I just want to feel sure that I can continue using all my A-Mount lenses!

      1. No, I’m not crying for OVF,nor do I insist on the mirror, neither flip-up nor pellicle. I wasn’t explicitey asking for an A590.

I’m not against progress in any way – I just want an up-to-date A-Mount camera to accomodate my lenses (some of them with screw-driven AF, so don’t forget the AF drive)

        Peter

    3. did you just add the “Sony A590 APS-C” option a minute ago, or didn’t I saw it the first time?
Thanks anyway, this is exactly what I am waiting for +-500€, and this is all I need for 98% of my pictures ( OVF is not dead !!!)

      1. not really. It was always there. You just missed it 😉 Now: get more votes for it, cause this cannot be that a camera like that gets less support then m4/3 from Sony.

    1. I agree on that of a in body 5-axis image stabilization!!!
It’s one of the big advantages of having the image stabilzation in the camera body by moving the imagesensor.
Image stabilzation in the lenses can never be done 5-axis!
Sony must use this and by that having a better image stabilzation than canikon can make with their in lens image stabilizations.

Besides this I want an APS-C camera following the A57 (or A77), with the double autofocus system based on on imagesensor PDAF and the SLT PDAF-module from the A99.
For me is the APS-C sensor format the one I prefer, with smaller lenses and a DOF that I prefer for my photographing.

      1. I suppose A78 will have it. Both of it. At least: I hope so…. cause these two are one of a very few things that would make me switch from A77 to a newer camera.

  6. I’d definitely consider a cheap ff but any danger of them making more of those things you stick on the end of the body? I hear Canikon has a nifty sideline selling them…

  7. Can someone please tell Sony that they should update their current camera. On my A77 I am still waiting for manual audio control for video, selectable aperture for video in auto focus….

What good does it do if sony releases camera after camera without fixing the bugs on the older (just about 1 year old) cameras.

    1. No worries, 1 year long lifespan applies only to entry level – just like with Canon and Nikon – and as it’s usually for them: They don’t get updates. Your A77 is already over year long and there’s not even a single rumour about replacement “”fixing”” issues.
Though to a degree: It’s bound to happen anyway – first generations always get replaced by second with hardware fixes (which saddens me too, as I got A77 as well).

  8. Love an A950, new body shape and ergonomics (like A99), 6fps , 100% monster viewfinder and A99 sensor. I don’t think Sony should completely abandon DSLR until mirorless A mount is a reality. Also a mirrorless Medium Format camera in partnership with Hasselblad would definitely get my vote and I would purchase 100%.

      1. Agreed!

With SONY moving their DSLR line of cameras to to Electronic Viewfinder SLT cameras, they’re leaving their long-time professional Minolta customers behind. If you’ve ever worked as a professional photographer shooting weddings and events every weekend, you know that looking through a bright 6500K Electronic Viewfinder is a terrible way to work in a dimly lit 2800K reception hall, or event venue. The eye strain from peering into the bright Viewfinder and then lowering the camera and walking around the dim room can be very taxing on the eyes. I’ve accidentally walked on top of a few kids and tripped a few old ladies on the dance floor as a result!

And… If you’re firing off-camera flash to light the room, via radio transmitters, or if you’re bouncing a Metz or Sunpak handle grip flash, you encounter additional problems because the Viewfinder doesn’t know that your flash is going to go off when the picture gets taken. So… You end up having a VERY dark (underexposed) scene to look at through the Viewfinder. The only real way to combat this is to shoot in Manual Exposure Mode and dial in a very long shutter speed like 1/2 of a second or longer to be able to see the room around you through the viewfinder. But the problem with doing that is that with such a long shutter speed, you’ll end up with too much orange, streaky, ambient light in the exposure after the flash(es) fire. Or worse yet, if the room is lit with fluorescent lighting, you’d have way too much yellowish/green light spilling into your photo.

I, for one, need an Optical Viewfinder in order to continue making a living with my vast array of A-Mount lenses. I was a Minolta shooter for several years, and I’m now on my third SONY alpha body (the shutters do actually die at some point after 100,000 actuations!).

If neither SONY nor Hasselblad announce (or leak a patent and/or credible rumor) for an upcoming Optical Viewfinder DSLR for 2013 or 2014, my only option will be to start stockpiling a900 and a850 bodies from ebay and keh.com… and that’s something that I’ll happily do, even though I’d prefer to be giving my money to SONY and supporting their hard work in developing technologies like on-sensor phase detect AF points!

  9. I vote for a NEX that can do video properly. I mean without aliasing and moire.
The Cybershot team can make it with the HX9v and the RX100.
The Handycam team can make it with all the Handycam video cameras.
These two teams works with various sensor size (from 1/4 to 1 inch) and various MP numbers that need to be downsized “on the fly” to 1080p, and they can make it !
So why is the Alpha/NEX team totally unable to do it as well ???

  10. I’m bit surprised by how few votes OVF cameras got. Best – A950 – got barely 18%, and APS-C with optical viewfinder got LESS votes then totally ridiculous m4/3 camera from Sony?
    I’m astonished.

Seems like truly – all the OVF fans left for Canon/Nikon/Pentax.

  11. everybody wants a FF NEX but with FF E mount there is not enough room for IBIS. On the other hand there are no E mount FF lenses and A mount lenses are not stabilized. So how can FF NEX really happen? unless you give up on the idea of image stabilization.

    1. good point. I hope thats what they are working on now. I really want a full frame nex. Playing with all the lens options it opens up is so much fun.

    2. A77 can use electronic image stabilization. No moving parts involved. NEX could get the same (although picture size would probably need to be slightly smaller then FF. Say: crop x1.1)

  12. None of the available options for me thank you. I really don’t care about FF, EVF, wifi, apps, GPS etc.

What I want to see is very simple: a NEX camera with a screen that not only tilts up and down, but left and right as well.

Silly? Maybe, but that is the only wish I have left for the NEX camera. No need for other frills or thrills. KISS! (Keep It Simple Stu … ehr .. Sony).

  13. A budget SLT is missing from that list. The A37 is too expensive in comparison to the beginner CaNikon’s.

Sony need to kick-start the bottom of the range to get people interested in the brand, these are the people that then move on to higher models.

If I was a noob starting out again I’d probably go with the “safe” choices of Canon 1100D/Nikon D3200. Sony need to be MUCH cheaper than these.

  14. Not even December and we already plan for the next year. It feels like Walmart’s Xmas shopping offers: “Tell Santa now what you want!” Let’s skip Halloween altogether.

That being said, the argument in the previous comments differs little from any other argument when rumors come out: “EVF is shit…meh meh meh…we need EVF, its the future! meh meh meh….no guys, what we need is a 50mp canikon killer meh meh meh…”

The poll results as well are not surprising…people never happy with what is offered now and want non existent products.

  15. One camera that I’ll buy, not listed for vote, is RX200, the same as RX100 but with bigger optical zoom and GPS.
    I selected:
    – NEX-9 with Full Frame sensor = for the choice of E-mount and A-mount lenses
    – NEX-7n with all possible NEX features = for GPS
    – Sony Micro Four Thirds camera = this will be a smaller camera, including lenses, also it will have a lens with bigger zoom of 300mm (600mm in FF terms)

  16. Sony really needs to make a Full Frame nex, a Nex-9. It’s not that we really need a ff mirroless right now, its just to mark position, because if Canon or nikon decide to make a FF mirroless we will se a major run from other systems (including nex) to the one of the big names…

Sony should release the Nex-9, asap, with a fast kit lens (24-70/2.8) and a standard prime (M-rokkor 40mm f2 cames to mind), that would be enough to grab lots of users who want a FF to adapt lenses like leicas, zeiss, voigthlander…

a new revival of the M-rokkors 28/2.8, 40/2 and 90/4 would be killer, the lenses are so small and with excelent IQ, and with new coatings they would be perfect to a FF nex

      1. I saw that and felt discouraged but then I realized the whole image looks really, really soft. Perhaps it is not focused properly or there’s an issue with the lens, adapter, sensor, combo. The CV 35mm shot is a little soft but the corners are better and if you bump up the contrast it looks pretty decent. So I’m still hopeful.

        1. Yes, it is soft, simply out of focus, but the purple fringe can’t be explained by focusing error. And this is not even RF lens, although very aggressive: Zuiko 21 has small exit pupil pretty close to the film plane. I hope 28mm RF lenses will be fine.

          1. I’m honestly not seeing this egregious purple fringe but it is just so hard to tell with the focus being so off. Honestly, I appreciate that photog sharing so many sample videos and pictures but a lot of his images seem weirdly out of focus.

  17. Lot’s of excellent potential products on that list. Larger format cameras, full frame mirrorless, faster compact cameras. Andrea should be Sony’s product manager instead of the overly cautious and conservative one’s they have currently.

  18. I don’t want another new camera. I can’t afford another new camera. I will not buy another new (Sony) camera. Why…read on.

All I, and so many other people, want is for Sony to give us firmware updates to give us a proper Jpeg engine and better ISO for the A65/A77 and any other cam which needs it. If they had done this and looked after their existing users, my first paragraph would have read “I don’t really want a new camera, I can’t really afford a new camera…..BUT…..”. You see, Sony, confidence in the product and the manufacturer is paramount. No confidence, no more sales.

Look at the initial problems with the A65/A77. The very poor Jpeg engine and ISO problems still exist (even, apparently, with the new cams as well) with nothing whatsoever coming from Sony to help.

Sony really don’t care about existing camera owners, all they want to do is keep on pushing out more and so called better cameras which still have their problems and which, as Sony keep proving, they do not care about and will not fix.

Sony’s fix is to give us another new camera.

Sorry Sony, we have had enough. You are taking yourself on a very slippery road downwards with your poor reputation for customer care.

As I have said before, you make great sensors…It’s just a pity that you don’t get the best out of them because of your poor firmware team. You let everyone else beat you…..with your own sensors.

Sony….Please sort out your firmware team and give us updates to give our A65/A77′s (and others)a proper Jpeg engine and better ISO. QUICKLY…before it’s too late.

    1. Canon and Nikon are no different. If you were a Nikon user you’d be bitching about the lack of firmware updates for your D’whatever. Have a look at the CaNikon forums, the grass isn’t greener.

      1. Yes,Frank, I understand what you say and agree…except that CaNikon’s cameras work very well all things being considered and the updates they do need, unlike Sony, are not for basic photographic essentials like Jpeg engines and ISO which, as I said in my initial post, Sony urgently need to address.

Sony should stop producing cameras for a little while, sit back and think very carefully. It’s not just about the camera and what it does, it’s about the picture it takes. The camera could be the best thing since sliced bread but if the firmware (Jpeg, ISO) is crap, like it is on the A65/A77 then, by default, so is the camera. If Sony won’t fix these problems then confidence will (and already is) go downhill very fast…then who is going to buy the next generation of cameras, knowing that if there is a problem, Sony won’t fix it….they’ll just bring out another model…………..

  19. i vote for :

RX2 with fixed fast lens 35mm/2 lens (and possibly integrated evf, tilt LCD, leaf shutter with high speed sync flash 1/4000 up to 1/8000, high fps 8-10fps, with wide 24mm/tele50mm conventer lens) price around $2800 include lens hood 😀

A95 SLT with Full Frame sensor, tilt LCD like a99 and sub $2000 price

  20. I DO NOT BUY ANY SONY….this year
    and not next year……because the
funny games Sony and his comatic
department does, is millions of miles
    away…

I Do NOT…will not and want not
    spend one $….

    in 2014 every fulsensor cam
    -new 88
    -new 89
new what ever…tipical sensless marketing shit

every cambody will be under 1300 $..

so fine for the first sheeps
    finer for me.

i am the boss of the $$$$

  21. How about an RX5- w/ff sensor, built in OVF, more prominent hand grip (yet svelte), slightly less expensive materials, 50mm fixed CZ f/1.4 lens w/auxiliary wide/tele options? Priced at $1899.00

    I’d love something like that.

      1. Uh no. I’d like what I said I’d like. I’ve already got DSLR’s and other cameras coming out of my ears from manufacturers here for review.

Personally, the NEX6 is probably the camera I’ve wanted to keep for personal use for a LONG time.

For others a FF option would be nice, something similar to what I specced out would be more appropriate and sell better for Sony most likely.

  22. How about an RX7 w/ a 1.3 litre turbocharged rotary engine and fully independent suspension? Priced at $28,000.

  23. Stupid poll. Nothing interesting there. Personally I would like Sony to do only one thing – new software for A700 and A900 to enable true raw+good jpg quality, where jpg looks like this from v5 NEX software.

SLT cameras are far behind A700 / A900 quality standards (well, maybe A99 will be up to).

    1. My portrait, web clients are well served by a700 quality and fast editing it provides. They also like my prices staying low for not having upgraded to a camera they get no benefit from. And the wedding togs I support with gear are not yearning for anything more than the a700 either. That cam is easily capable of producing excellent quality for the largest album print requirements. Anything more is overkill.

I just equipped another tog with two practically new a700’s, vertical grip, flash, a kit lens and f2.8 zoom for $800. Kit paid for itself on his first job last weekend. That kit begins earning 100% profit this weekend and will multiply my investment ten fold by end of year. The deals on quality cameras are crazy good right now.

Don’t get me wrong… the a77 is fabulous. Just nothing I or my team needs at the moment.

  24. LOL i guess SONY do have some one read this site …

Bring on A95 (A88)! They can do it with A65, WHy not, just as they did with A850!

    NEX-9 at 2500 / NEX -7N at 1200 sounds juicy!

  25. I want Sony to take some of their R&D people and focus on lenses. I’m very content with their camera lineup now. It’s not perfect, but they and Oly have really driven the market forward over the last 18mos. What I want now is a good fast zoom lens that isn’t the size or weight of a brick.

    1. Where have you been? Sony just released 3 lenses for NEX (actually 4 if you missed recent power zoom) and 1 for Alpha announcing 1 more while Zeiss announced 2 E-mount lenses. There’s quite a bit going on recently in terms of lens department.

  26. I wish Sony would start producing weather sealed f4 zooms to go together with A99. That’s the only thing I would need beside A99 itself.

  27. It amazes me that people are still clinging to the OVF raft from Sony.
That ship has sailed long ago and the only rescue is getting on ANOTHER ship.

    😉

  28. Hows about a FF camera that it purely aimed towards being a camera (not a videographer tool), I’m talking super fast processing (duel/quad processors) for fast in camera HDR and such fast FPS back up at 12 like the A77. Really good ISO performance (I realize the 99 already has this). Wifi/smart phone tethering, time laps and a larger EVF

And would it be to much to ask to have some weather sealed lenses to go with our weather sealed cameras ( 24-70 G f2.8 and 70-200 G f2.8 would be a good start)

    And preferably do a bundle A** + 24-70 + 70-200 for ~£4000

  29. A950 or A9, the name isn’t a problem, 24MP, OVF, real 50-25600 ISO, integrated vertical-grip with 4 battery option, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, NO VIDEO, really sealed and ergonomic body (someone remember the Minolta9xi body shape with battery pack?). Ok for $3.000.

    1. This won’t happen. Not from Sony, not from Canon, Nikon, Pentax or even Olympus. Noone will release camera like that today or any time in predictable future.

  30. Dont now. A99 looks fail for me – foto just a bit better than A77 and noise looks very similar to 77. 5DM3 looks much more better. But didnt have tilted screen. 99 with its SLT not faster, not better focusing and not much cheaper than Canon. And white balance like 77 – all is TOO warm.

    So – I want A580 in 77 body wit FF 16 – 18 MP matrix.

    1. Can’t judge the A99 yet. Beta firmware, mostly JPEG images, non controlled shooting situations. The video capability far surpasses many DSLRs, which I suspect is what Sony is really after. And if it is as good a video DSLR as Sony thinks it is, they will be selling a lot of this camera.

  31. More models are nice, but Sony need to start concentrating on proper market segmentation *throughout* and not just hardware only (as they do now).

A pro product should not only have pro hardware, but also pro support. This includes regular firmware updates and the availability of pro support packages direct from Sony. They are an international company and surely have more of the globe covered than Canikon, yet they dont utilise their Sony Centres in this way at all.

A single download page per model (which is all we currently have on the Sony website) and a Facebook wall isnt really my idea of support at beginner level, never mind pro.

We need a a dedicated Sony Alpha/NEX website. If they did that, they would already have tons of content for the A99 from the beta testers to pick and choose from… surely Sony don’t give out beta cameras without stipulating that all testers submit some content at the end of the trial? Marketing schoolboy error!

  32. In my opinion Sony messed up with the AF sensors being all centered, it is a huge point for me and may become a deal breaker for me. I’ll reserve me judgement unil I try the thing. A mount is not sony’s biggest money maker, compact cameras are. Until things change we will get crippled SLR/SLT bodies. A99 AF module puts it in the d600 6d territory, because it is SMALL!!!!

  33. RX1 with hibrid viewfinder and M mount interchangable lenses, so we could use Leica, Zeiss glass stuff..

    Wet dreams!

  34. All options suck.

    What I’d like to see:
    1. An enchanced A99 to compete with D800/5DM3 (autofocus and stuff)
    2. A clear statement that there will be no FF NEX, ever, and that Sony is committed to FF ALPHA cameras.

Else, it’s starting to look like Sony is making mirrorless cameras the priority, not real cameras.

  35. Sony…. Your customer base for the Alpha mount is shrinking rapidly….. Please, don’t kill this mount by consistently taking wrong decisions one after the other.

You decided to go “EVF only” for the alpha line. I’m not a not a die-hard OVF fan… However, I expected that A99 will have significant improvement for its EVF. The technology is still far from perfect. It’s not just the lagging (which is horrible in some cases), but the washed out colors alone can make any cheap narrow OVF seem like heaven. The technology is pushed onto us without perfecting it; you admitted the flaws of EVF as well after A77 launch, and promised to improve it further in future. But, till that future comes to reality, why didn’t you give the customers the option of an OVF model? You intentionally never released A580 the last alpha OVF camera in many parts of the world, including Canada. Were you afraid that it would cannibalize the sales of A55 then? At least that figure may have put the messege through the heads of your decision makers.

You also decided to go “SLT only” for the alpha line. I understand the added profits that SLT brings for you (minus the mirror, minus the flapping machanism, minus the prism OVF). But, SLT itself isn’t perfect. Robbing the light, it now causes additional noise in all your cameras, compared to those of your competators usung the same sensors. And, still you were stubborn enough not to have a DSLR option for the alpha line.

I can go on with this list of you stil not releasing/updating enough lenses… not perfecting the firmwares for some of your top of the line cameras… etc etc. It’s been a year that A77 was released… It’s still an incomplete camera with major issues. What are you guys really thinking?

    1. Where is the evidence to backup your claim that the Sony “customer base for the Alpha mount is shrinking rapidly”…?

Or did you just make it up?

I’ll save you the bother, you just made it up.

      1. According to recent polls – it’s actually growing. Not as fast as NEX (obviously – low-end gear always sells better) but steadily growing. Sony been showing some graphs after the photokina – can’t find them sadly.

  36. Sony,

give me a mirrorless EVF full frame, and give me a reason to walk away from Canikon. I’m not leaving them from SLT APS-C, thank you very much. It has to be FF, and it has to be reasonably affordable (i.e. not $3K for one focal length).

  37. Good Haevens, I want You inspire Sony to built RX10 with 10x zoom (collapsible!!!:)), APS-C sensor from NEX-5R, EVF, ISO hot-shoe and 1500$ price. :)))))

    1. I am sure there are plenty of people here that came from (or tried) Sony R1: a jewel, one of a kind bridge camera with APS-C sensor and marvelous Zeiss lens (built-in). I “upgraded” to A700, then to A57 and still miss the versatility and image quality of my old R1. Yes, I do have baby Zeiss 16-80 that is similar to the lens on R1, but wish Sony would make another serious bridge camera on steroids. Tired of carying all the lenses, & NEX with its limited lens selection and bulky filters with no OIS & slow focusing is not a solution. I would jump on anything similar to RX10 with APS, built-in EVF and hotshoe as long as it has a quality lens (even if non-removable) with range of 16-135. 16MP is plenty for me, make it sturdy built (dropped that R1 multiple times, even on tile) and versatile and Sony will get plenty of business! Not for professional use, but for day to day shots, that’s all that one needs. Hope someone agrees with me.

      1. Sure, THIS RX10 could be as almost compact as NEX-6 with 18-55.
And a lot of customers, more than RX1 and RX100 in total.

  38. I would suggest to specify for nex 7n: 16mp PDAF sensor (not the current 24 mp, which is not good for nex)

I would also add the option for RX2 camera – the RX1 camera + tiltable touch screen as in nex-5R, plus updated sensor to accomodate the PDAF. If if would be available – I would simply buy it right away.

  39. Sony,
I love your color filters and if you decide to release a FF nex let me know soon as I’m this close to buying a VG 900 in the spring. I’m very much afraid of the electronic shutter on the VG but all of the M mount lenses I bought to use on your fabulous nex cameras keep taunting me to buy a FF camera.

    P.S.
I think there is a real market for sub 500€ MF e-mount lenses. Just make them compact and robust and faster than f2! I’d kill for a 16mm f1.4 or a 10mm f2 even if only in dx.

    1. So does SLR Magic. Most of their newly announced lenses are within that price. The problem is making a lens that wide and that fast for that cheap. If you can live with 24mm you should check them out.

      1. Yeah, I know! I have all the voigtlander lenses f2 and faster. My point is I really wouldn’t mind sony making some money off of those purchases. In fact I wish they would!
I really have no problem with the current trend of every year we get a new sensor and the bodies get cheap for the previous year. I’m also making enough these days that I can afford to buy sony’s new shiny thing AND interesting lenses.

I’m just not too interested in the lenses that I see from sony. I don’t want a zoom, even when I had an A900 it travelled in coat pockets so it was always with me. Furthermore I’m pathologically lazy and my pictures go to shit when a zoom doesn’t force me to frame a shot with my body.

I sold my A900 and 6 sony/minolta lenses after using the nex3 for 6mo. because I could focus better with the nex than AF could. The AF lenses on the nex don’t inspire me so I’ll keep buying other people’s lenses to put on the nex. I’ll get a VG900 so that I can use the whole image circle.

I like having lenses, I like discovering their personalities and I could see buying 5 different 35mm lenses from sony if they were the right price (under 500, and under 200 for really strange things like a f1.0 mirror lens) and didn’t try to be the perfect lens.

That said, I’ll now be keeping an eye out for interesting lenses from SLRmagic, the look to be producing interesting lenses hooray!

  40. I chose Full-frame NEX 9. Right now it would open up a lot of lens choices. E mount in crop-mode, A-mount, 3rd party like the SLR Magic lenses that get reviewed here, and legacy. Go SONY!!

  41. While we’re wishing, I’d like to see a high MP mirrorless aimed at studio, landscape and architecture photography. Sony seems to have a lead in high-MP FF sensors and the NEX mount would be ideal, with plenty of room for adapters, tilt-shift and so on.

Sure, it’s a niche market. But for the moment it’s a wide open niche that could lead to more professionals looking at SLT and NEX if it catches on.

    1. My concern is that the higher the megapixels the smaller the photosites and I personally want a FF NEX that will play nice with RF lenses. Sure even the wide angle CV lenses are passable on the 5N but I figure we need photo sites even bigger for the edges of the frame.

  42. What should Sony make?

    I’m a still photographer.
I don’t care if it’s a NEX E-Mount or a A-Mount, I want (need) a camera that can produce an image as good as, or better than anything else on the market for its size and portability. One that delivers top notch metering & focus accuracy with low light / high ISO performance that is also as good if not better than any of the competition. The number of megapixels the sensor offers is not that important, but needs to be 24MP or greater to allow for cropping. If bigger that’s fine I will purchase a faster computer and bigger storage as I’ve been doing anyway since computers first came to market in the 1980’s.

Ergonomics & handling is also very important as the camera/lens combination needs to be as light as it can in weight but not so to harm any of the above and it must not be so small that its awkward to hold in my hand and work with for hours and to adjust the required manual controls. The build needs to be solid and protected against moisture and the occasional blast of water from a police water canon at a protest.

Last but not least, it must be part of a system of equal high quality and fast optics that cover 10 to 600mm with flash and other options, including tethering as not to limit my ability to work both on the street and in the studio with the same camera body.

Price; If it has all of the above and is better than the rest, then it can cost more.
If it dosen’t have the IQ, build and a supporting system then a price a few hundred dollars cheaper is not going to make any difference to me, as I don’t want it at any price.

      1. I’ve been shooting Minolta/Sony full-frame for a long time and I own many nice lenses.
Also, I do like the EVF and IBS and other things only Sony has
So go to Hell, you don’t own this website do you?

And even if I do and add a different vendors product to my bag, I do sill have the right to participate.

I’ve been on this site for several years now and you king of remind me of the old SonyA77 fanboy of last year that was always trying to chase posters away is that you? did you change your screen name?

  43. Admin/Andrea: I am still waiting for the newest A77 firmware update. When will that going to happen?

By the way: The A99 will cost 2499,- ( lowest price) in the Netherlands.

      1. …and it was meant to be ready around now. My guess is that they have a lot of work on the A99 firmware yet though. 😉

  44. How about some updates to A77, 65, 57, 37 for improved BIONZ and an updated A77 flagship APS-C model.

Sony will need an entry level FF SLT to compete with Canon/Nikon.

  45. What about an a99s — the faster alternative to an a99 that shoots 12 FPS like Sony’s other 24MP SLT models? Add a built-in flash to trigger remote flashes, too, and you’d have something much more valuable than the existing a99.

  46. YEAH WHAT A WONDERFUL IDEA !!!
MORE NEX BODIES !! WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH !!
SONY SHOULD PROPOSE A NEW NEX, NOT EVERY FIVE MOUNTH …(LIKE NOW) BUT ONE EVERY MOUNTH !!!
WE DON’T NEED E-MOUNT LENS WITH CONSTANT APERTURE ..

MAY BE ONE DAY, THEY WILL BE A NEW ONE EVERY DAY !!

    OH YEAH

  47. Sony has released plenty of cameras…what it needs to release is lenses. Like a fast (f/1.8 or faster) wideangle prime…I’m talking a 12, 14, 16…something like that. Nobody has released a fast wide prime for E mount. We don’t need any more cameras until the lens line catches up!

  48. Problem with Polls like this, is that most people won’t put their Money where their mouth is, even if Sony came through with the most voted product!

  49. I selected the number 9.
If Sony decides to take this step it will mean that they are looking to the future and are not afraid to take risks.
So help them unbending spirit of the great Amaterasu!

It will be hard but brilliant move Sony.

    KG

  50. I would love to have a new Optical viewfinder to replace my a580 :D, It would be awesome and great for my nite club and night photography 😀 I hope someone from SONY reads this 😀

    1. You can always turn ‘setting control’ mode off, so the evf will act like ovf with no setting in the view finder, everything is bright. I just found that out when using a slt in studio where its really dark.

  51. Give me my NEX 9 in an ultra compact format and I’ll be more than happy. Or, one not thought of, an RX1 v2 with a curved sensor and a compact 18-125mm zoom lens, 4k raw video at 30fps, and full light anti motion-blur pixels (it’s a new thing, helps correct for motion blur, handheld operation FTW!).

If I had that I wouldn’t care about switching lenses ever again! I mean, wide angle to high zoom, assumedly sharp image quality from aforementioned curved sensor, full choice in F-stop, and it fits in my friggen pocket, whoo!

  52. Please don’t make a FF NEX-9 native E-Mount. Please make FF mirrorless that is A-Mount native. Please don’t make me use those awful adapters. Please go larger than 24mp. Please don’t give your best sensor to your competitor… Please remember the photographers that use competitor gear are also MY competitor. Please don’t leave me wanting for what my competitor uses.

Please make a FF 9 series that is designed as a STILLS KILLER KONG… that leaves all others eating dust… with very little if any video. Please know there is a big market still based upon Stills Photographers.

Please make a Ginormous FF Sensor designed to compete with Medium Format… and not your own video cameras.

    I said please.

  53. 4K video at 120 fps. Alpha mount, full frame, 16 megapixels. Storage to three removable 2.5 inch hard drives in raid 5, (SSD or with the ability to use the 750 gig seagate momentus XT). Full wifi, bluetooth, network connectivity with camera working as NAS. Battery pack built in, (it will need it).

Would also like a very powerful, (at least 3 to 5 times more so than any current Sony flash), versatile, handlebar flash designed to work with it.

  54. A NEX body style with a micro four thirds sensor and the ability to mount Oly and Panasonic lenses. Sony, please show Olympus how to design cameras!

  55. any chance of a HX9v-like camera, but with full manual video, proper live view and easier focusing (ie a manual ring) ?

small sensor, fairly fast and sharp zoom lens. (faster than HX9v)
    cheap.

stupid idea? does this camera already exist (other brands)?

  56. Now that Sony is crazy enough to release a FF compact camera, I wish for the following:

Sony RX1000, a megazoom sports/travel camera with that beautiful 1″ sensor, 25-300mm optical, constant aperture f2.8. Gotta keep up with Panasonic FZ200, folks!

Son RX2, 36 Megapixel FF sensor (Nikon D800 sensor), 24mm f2.0 lens, with 3X Clear Image Zoom, what you have here is the dream camera, a compact 24-70mm f2.0 camera. Release Fall 2013, or Q1 2014

  57. Sony would think twice about FF NEX. How big the NEX market? Would they need re-design a whole lens line-up? If FF NEX means bulkier lens, people might as well upgrade to A77. However a compact FF camera like the RX1 with fixed lens may prove to be popular with certain crowd with higher disposable income. The quality of NEX APS-C is more than good enough for enthusiasts, hobbyists, rich people. Hell, even the WX & HX models are good enough for both consumers and hobbyists.

  58. Still missing al NEX based camera capable of recording 4K video… A little bit more compact than the FS700.

  59. “A950 Optical Viewfinder camera with 24 megapixel Full Frame sensor” – make that a 36 megapixel with noise improvements at all ISO, or if not, a 24 megapixel with no or really, really tiny that you have to look very, very close for noise issuse at all ISO. 🙂

  60. WHAT SONY CUSTOMERS REALLY NEED ARE LENSES, some cheaper too!
as an example, 70-200 f/4 SSM lens as a cheap alternative to the SAL70200G or a 24-70mm f/4 SSM lens as a cheap alternative to the SAL2470Z. Bring all that with a cheaper A85 as an alternative to the A99 (which is a very good camera with the 0.90 firmware, tested it a week ago)

The bodies replacements and addons will come for sure. But lenses aren’t guaranteed at all!

    – RX1 replacement with built-in EVF. 35mm f/2 lens will stay, with Converters coming too.
    – RX-series with APS-C sensor, but with 24mm f/2 lens as best option and built-in EVF.
    – RX-series as big as DSC-R1 (the old good camera) with a constant aperture, all around lens will come, maybe with a 1.0 Type sensor.

    – A85 it’s coming too, how many months passed when the A900 was released and then the A850 came? Do the math. And I do expect that camera to be launched together with SAL50F14Z (Carl Zeiss ZA 50mm f/1.4 SSM)

    – NEX-9 will come for sure and maybe with an alternative version of the 35mm f/2 we see in DSC-RX1.

What won’t happen is, Sony m4/3 camera, Sony Hybrid EVF, Sony OVF FF camera nor APS-C. What really need to happen is more lenses for A-mount. E-mount already have a roadmap, so the future for A-mount is uncertain.

  61. I’m not interested in further bodies. The newest ones have not even been reviewed yet. Sony does not need millions of models, they should focus on making the current ones perfect.

…and try to stimulate the ecosystem of the accessories and lenses offcourse.

  62. well, whatever they do next, i hope they will add proper live view for video shooting to the new models. (a’la Canon)

  63. My NEX 7 has some glaring problems that could be fixed with a firmware update. They are the usually mentioned ones like the exposure spread on bracketing and a way to make it less easy to turn on video. The lack of a selection of compact, high quality lenses is still a problem. Apparently looking like they do not make mistakes is important to them. If Sony does not care about their existing customers now that is unlikely to change with new cameras. I don’t see much reason to go any farther with Sony even if they improve the autofocus on the new models. I can’t afford to be their beta tester for a subsequent model.

  64. -NEX9 more likely, but i need to see a E-mount lens that work with FF sensor
-A95 almost a sure thing for next year, sony will follow every nikon and canon step
-NEX7n another sure thing, its just a matter of time, incremental better models each year
-A1 sony say 24 is the way to go for movies, but maybe, just maybe they will do it (maybe a new a99 36mp and the actual a99 24mp will become a96 or a95 or a97 or a98)
-A950 i bet is a NO,NO sony say ovf is buried in the past, and i agree
-RX10 i dont think so, sound like a nex, RX100 (only 1 inch sensor) RX1 (nex with FF but since they dont make E-mount lens for FF needed a fixed lens on it)
-A-mount FF+ that could be the future for normal size DSRL and SLT now that mirrorless are taking their world, but a bigger sensor will put them in the EXPENSIVE edge, and probably new mount and surely new lens will be needed, adding to an already expensive new tech.
-NEX-1 if sony go medium, the first will land in SLT regular alpha, NEX will follow after years
-RX1 no, there will be only one rx1, and they will stick with the lens they chose.
-A590 ovf is dead in the water
-NEX hvf i need to play with the fuji x pro one to see if they had gold or hype in there.
-supercheap NEX since now you can get older models for less than that $300, i think not, sony need that price range to clear older inventory, but who knows sony is taking mirrorless market like a tsunami, nikon entry was a flop, but canon late entry its a bigger challenge, so a NEX1 to NEX9 its a good thing, but lenses are the key, and i think canon mirrorless mount path has an advantage.
    – somy mFT never ever gonna happend, i see olympus joining APSC more likely than the other way.

  65. The one I would like to see is the RX1 style with a 24-70 f/2.8 lens.
Failing that, a full frame NEX would be good too, but only if Sony can release a good full frame 24-70 with it–not later.

And please leave out the video completely.

  66. i think and feel 90% of the votes are tourists and ppl who want a “good” camera hence the high choice on the NEX-9 (travel camera)

    1. I have been a pro photographer(payed the bills the last 10 years with photography alone) and i dont think there is anything “tourist” about a possible Sony NEX 9 FF look what is being done with the NEX 7 and 6 with video and stills. If i could lose a pound and a half of camera and still get great shots ,why not.

  67. The one option you missed was an A9 Mirrorless in a full-body design. Basically your A99 without the SLT mirror.

  68. A65 replacement with,
    – NEX-6 sensor
    – hybrid auto focus
    – Multi-interface hot shoe
    – auto-bracket up to at least +-3ev

  69. I would like a Sony with the d800 sensor, IBIS, and by preference an OVF. Only then will I part with my a850.

  70. RX1 Mk II, or RX2, a 36 Megapixel FF compact with 24mm f2.0 lens with superb 3X Clear Image Zoom function. You have a low light, portrait compact camera, no more lugging around 1 kg of glass bulk in you bag.

RX100 Mk II, or RX 200, low magnification zoom, faster aperture lens, 24-85, f1.8-2.8, general purpose, still have that legendary clean ISO performance. Better Macro capability at all focal lengths (not just the widest end)

RX1000, 1/1.7″ sensor, 24-400. f2.8-4.0, megazoom, for travel, nature, event, specially tuned stabiliser at the 400mm end. Macro capability at all focal length

RX100UW (UW for Ultra Wide), 1″ sensor, RX100 style body with a 16-35mm f4 lens, constant aperture, great for architectural shots, travel, indoor photography.

I would probably buy all four since I love what Sony does with RX100 in terms of build quality, design, ergonomics, sensor quality, and portability. Excellent product line, Sony !!

  71. RX10 with 4/3 sensor with the zoom lens of RX100.
This can make it only a little larger than RX100. APS-C sensor will make it larger and there is already the NEX line.
