  1. “Again, all that stuff is coming on Wednesday! ”

SteveHuff mentions that he is under NDA, but will post everything on Tuesday … Are we sure it’s Wednesday and not Tuesday?

  2. First !!! 🙂

All images with the lens looking upward are somehow flatered…
They look somehow more compact than they are…

        1. As we haved told that this would be a game changer one, judging by the sensor plane mark, could this be the one that has hybrid mount camera sony had planned to release? Admin?

      1. To me, the rear screen sort of looks like it might at least tilt up similar to the NEX5? At least I hope. If Sony opted not to offer a built in viewfinder, the very least they could do is offer a tilting LCD.

    1. It’s a lock dial, to avoid switching by mistake. On my Pentax, it’s a real pain, you must use your two hand to turn the dial, one to push hard on the button, one to turn the firm dial 🙁

  3. It’s strange that Sony would release RX1 with a fix glass with an “assume” high price. The fix glass just wipe out most of the potential of the FF sensor feature. (unless RX1 is really not a fix lens) Wouldn’t it makes more sense to put the FF in a NEX? Why would one want a RX1 when the A99 has more punch (feature wise, unless as an expensive 2nd cam)? I can appreciate the Zeiss lens could have cost 1/2 the camera price. What is the market segment strategy? This is not disruptive technology at all.

    Things to note:
The RX1 sensor position is far more to the back compared to NEX6. This is to achieve the require focal distance. I guess the articulate LCD screen from NEX may be hampering the possibility to push NEX 6 sensor further back so that it could benefit from a FF sensor.

Looking forward to Photokina gonna get the tickets this week. NEX 6 here I come baby….

    1. Sony has a BIG problem with lenses. They are criticized for not being on par with Canon and Nikon in the full-frame area (not enough weather sealed lenses, no tilt-shift lenses…) and even more for the “limited” lens selection in the NEX system. Just imagine the reaction of whiners if Sony launched a full-frame compact system with just one or two lenses. So it makes sense they first launch this “teaser”.

    2. I see what you mean. I was dissapointed too, but…

…when you think about it, you cannot make a full blown Zeiss 35/2 FF camera this compact unless it is fixed lens (look how deep the sensor plane is on the RX1 compared to an NEX).

I hope and think a FF NEX will come late next year, and such a lens would/will be comparably bulky, whether it is E-mount or adapted A-mount (the SEL 24/1.8 gives one a good idea, and that is APS-C only most likely).

I am getting more and more tempted by this 35mm monster though.

People who wanted to shoot legacy glass on FF should be the most disapointed however, that is why I am a little disapointed.

      1. So are you trying to say that because of the E Mount format, lenses physically cannot be small sized?

How did Leica managed to have their lenses to be same sized on the M9? And I wonder why Sony never took this into account when designing the E-Mount? They basically has a clean sheet to begin with!

          1. Hmm, true, but how would you explain Fuji X lenses? They are just as small as the Zeiss E Mount, yet is able to autofocus and comes at f/1.4!

Of course the Fuji is an APSC sized sensor, but Fuji managed to make the lenses for their X Mount with AF at around the size of classic lenses. So I dont think by adding AF to FF will make the lens as large as DSLR lenses, probably around the size of the Noctilux?

          2. Owen – spaceman is right.
E-mount is limiting for lens size, as so is any other mount with interchangeable lenses. Simply because you can’t change how the microlenses are aligned in ILC, while you can perfectly align them for fixed-lens design. This opens a sea of opportunities, especially for primes. This one full frame lens is not much bigger then m4/3 primes while it covers sensor of twice the area! You’ll never get such a truly portable combo with mirrorless designs and sensor of this size.

          3. OWEN fuji lenses are not fullframe, with fullframe you are talking about even larger lenses than the body itself unless people want to start using manual focus only lenses

        1. Well, it is preatty clear that Sony was not aiming at serious photographers when designing the first nex cameras. They never considered Leica as a model, from this point of view. This new camera looks like a starting point for a new system, much more than an “upgraded” nex system. It may have the same E mount, but lenses will have to be different.

However, at the moment they just launched a non interchangeable system, I guess just to tease the market (as Fuji did with the X100).

I must confess that, price or not, something like that could interest me only with a good zoom in front of it. I Have the Sony RX100 and it is a great little camera. Something like that slightly bigger with FF would be THE camera I would have with me always, and I could almost forget DSLR (if not for special situations when I need extreme wide angles or macros, which are not so frequent, after all)

          1. I’m secretly hoping that future NEX lenses will be around the size and weight (maybe slightly heavier) then Fuji or Leica lenses, especially when FF NEX is introduced. Doesnt make sense to have DSLR sized lenses on a small body camera.

My other wish is to see the FF NEX to be weather sealed and hopefully future NEX lenses too (though I doubt that, see the current Sony A Mount lens lineup regarding weather sealing)

On the other hand, I guess we all should thank Fuji for making the first move with the X Pro 1, proving that there is a demand for mirrorless professional interchangeable cameras and followed by the OM-D (though I heard there is going to be a PRO OM-D coming soon).

          2. “Doesnt make sense to have DSLR sized lenses on a small body camera.” – then just get a compact. People wanting mirrorless for true portability usually will be nothing else then just disappointed. it’s been proven over and over again – even more with RX1 on top of the screen.

          3. “Doesnt make sense to have DSLR sized lenses on a small body camera.” – then just get a compact. People wanting mirrorless for true portability usually will be nothing else then just disappointed. it’s been proven over and over again – even more with RX1 on top of the screen.

I think you misunderstood me, I have no problems with the RX1 size, my only problem is when you look at the current E Mount lineup, their fastest lens is 1.8 and at that size, it fits the NEX bodies just perfectly (btw I’m ok with the size, not too small not too large), but when you use a 18-200 on a NEX, I know it is a superzoom, the size of the lens is similar to a DSLR lens! and it’s not exactly pleasant or as comfortable to use for long periods (not cause of the weight, but the size when mounted on a NEX body!)

Also considering a 1.8 is just the right size for a NEX body, how will a 1.4 E-Mount lens be? And with rumours regarding Full Frame NEX, it really makes me wonder how large will the lenses be, and as I mention, if it has the size of a Full Frame lens mounted on a NEX sized body, it wont exactly be comfortable.

Try mounting a CZ 50 1.4 on a NEX body and you see what I mean, it just doesnt feel right on a small body like the NEX.

      2. I realise the more I look at the RX1 and ponder upon the type of photography, it does grew on me. It kind of looks sexy but why not a retro silver top like the Fuji?

The orange ring is a real marketing attention seeker.

          1. There’s nothing retro about placing shutter dial on top instead of mode dial. fuji with their X100/X-Pro1/X-E1 got it right. There’s no need for a ‘mode’ dial, you have an ‘A’ position on the aperture ring and shutter dial, set aperture ring to ‘A’ and you are in shutter priority mode, set shutter dial to ‘A’ and you are in the aperture priority mode, set both to ‘A’ and you are in program auto. There’s no need for ‘mode dial’ – it’s just one, unnecessary, step on top because you need to choose mode and then value. With Fuji’s cameras you just set value and shoot – you don’t need to turn your camera on to work out what your settings are. This combined with Auto ISO is all you need.

        1. “The orange ring is a real marketing attention seeker”

It is very strange that the RX1 has the same orange mount ring that is being shown on the a99 if its a fixed lens.

I think its not fixed but a new mount and this new mount is the future and this is why Sony has been so slow releasing new optics for the A-mount and the E-mount.

          1. I’d love to believe that, but why would they put it on the ‘fixed lens’ camera, there’s no mount on it at least I can’t see lens release button?

          2. I can’t see any manual unlock button but maybe Sony invent an electronic unlock. But for me, it’s just a marketing trick, to show thaht the RX1 share the same root than the A99.

    1. It seems like Sony listened to all the complaints about the movie button on the NEX-7. Look at the position of the movie button on both the NEX-6 and RX1, it is turned away to the side from the thumb position so it seems less easy to hit accidentally.

    2. Either that orange ring is a lens mount or else it is meant to convey a specific meaning like the blue ring on a Zeiss lens or the red ring on a Canon lens. Perhaps the RX-1 is a $500 camera with a $1500 lens.

    1. I guess the mic and other new accessories will be working thought the hidden plug inside the new hot shoe. Who knows what secrets are waiting for us inside there? Admin, do you have any idea?

  4. Is it possible that the PASM selection wheel on the NEX-6 is stacked onto a control wheel (so that the black part of the wheel lets you select PASM etc. and the silver part is not locked to it so it lets you control e.g. aperture, shutter speed etc.)?

    1. That was said like a million times here… Bunch of people complaining about the drop of Tri-Navi. But I support the mode wheel and Bi-navi.

  5. Seems like Sony themselves are unsure about the best position for the movie record button:
Should it be on the back of camera like the A99, the side of the camera like the RX1, or diagonally like the NEX-6?… Three different cameras with three different positions. I’m not sure if Sony is looking to test user feedback, or is just plain crazy. Would be nice if there was some consistency… Just like the shutter button!

  6. The nex6 looks great to me more like a 7 in looks. Much prettier than the 4 and 5. Looks like its a bit smaller than the 7 too much would be better for my needs. I’m excited.

      1. 4 is 3 + WIFI and an electronic lens wiper? 2015 ;P
        I think he meant 3.
Sony will not name anything “4” being Japanese….

  7. About the A99: I am…
    … really curious image quality
… excited what the AF Range (and other AF enhancements) brings
… sad that the vertical grip is not build in
    … missing tethering
… hoping that 11 cross AF points are enough for serious sports photography
… praying that Sony presents an entire Alpha Roadmap on the 12th

    …buying the A99

        1. What are you guys afraid of? Do you think they did all R&D for A99 to suddenly drop the whole A-line? Of course new and better lenses will follow!

  8. When Sony makes product images for the A99 they should picture it
with the Sony/Zeiss 85mm or 135mm. They look BIG 🙂
    Or the Sony/Zeiss 24-70mm.

  9. When I was looking at the picture of the RX1 it all of sudden brought me to an idea….When you look at the RX1 lense it seems to have the same bajonet mount as the NEX 16mm lense does. So it may be possible to add the wide angel or fisheye add-on lenses. If Sony would extend the range of these very high grade but cheap (as they need no focus or aperature control) stacked optics, this system all of sudden would make a lot of sense and appear as the game changer they spoke about. Naked 35mm for street, ECU or ECF for wide angle, ECT, ECZ or ECM for Telephoto, Zoom or Macro…This would be a very capabale system with the very high level 35mm as a base. The cost for lenses could leverage the initial price.

    1. Good idea Andy_schw. I hope Sony is listening to this idea.

If the wide angle adapter could bring down the 35mm to 24mm, the fisheye to something lower and som tele adapters making it 50mm, 75mm and 150mm who knows 😉

  10. Even if I am a Point-and-Shoot photographer currently using an RX100 because my former NEX-5n was too large for me, can’t help but to wish for the RX1…looks like the most compact camera with no compromises in picture quality. RX100 + RX1 would make a very powerful combination.

I hate interchangeable lenses, I hate “EVF” word, I hate touch screens, tilt-screens, etc. why do I need all of these when I can take perfectly fine pictures without them ? just give me a means to get the best image quality with a camera I can carry everywhere with me, and I am happy.

It makes sense for Sony to sell fixed lens cameras, because their purpose is to sell their sensors (of which the full-frame sensors are the most profitable despite being the most expensive to make), not their (or Zeiss’s) lenses. And by doing this kind of cameras, they also fulfill our dreams of pocket cameras with perfect image quality.

    1. As I was saying above, an RX100 with FF sensor (or: an RX1 with a zoom) would be THE camera I would carry with me for years to come. OTOH, I don’t really fancy the idea of a non-zoom fixed lens. I have plenty of magnificent fixed lenses for my Nikon, and when I go around I don’t even carry them anymore (with the exception of the 105/2.8 macro). I think compacts have to be small but relatively flexible, so a zoom is a requirement (for me, at least)…

  11. I’m just waiting for the first leak of the A99 commercial. Two days before the official release date, they leaked on eastern-european Sony websites for the A700, A900 and A77. Just curious where the curtain raises too early this time…

  12. Good stuff is coming. Finally.

The RX1 is not aimed at people who have a lot of Sony/CZ glass. I imagine it to be aimed at Leica users and avantgarde people. Even if I had the money, I couldn’t imagine taking the RX1 as a 3rd or 4th backup camera to shoot a wedding or event. I’d rather get the 35 1.4 G :-))

I like the orange ring at the mount. Makes the camera system unique in a sense, you can spot a Sony shooter now from farer away, like Nikon has the red mark on the hand grip. But it’s of course of no big use, still looking good.

  13. Good God are they really printing “35mm Full Frame CMOS Image Sensor” on that freaking orange lens mount?

    Noooooooooo Freeeaaaakkkiking WAaaaaay!

Shows on the left side photo and on top view photo of a99. Front view doesn’t show it but it could be at angle.

What…? Do they think I’m going to forget?

And that God DANG PC port is going to be so uncomfortable in the left hand vertical shooting with that stupid door and cable swinging down into my palm. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING SONY??? Do you bother to use your cameras before selling them? Put the PC port on the FRONT!!!!!

Did Sony take a poll to see if people really wanted the chip specs printed on a glowing lens mount? Not good for covert journalism. Please somebody sell a stealth kit before I unroll the black tape.

    1. It’s not that easy to read unless you point the top of the camera at the subject. But I suspect 99% for people I shoot on the street have no clue what full frame means; rather, they’ll see a rather small point and shoot camera trying to look spiffy.

  14. Does no one here seem to notice that the ring on the a99 mount is the same as the RX1???

    It could be exchangeable lens!

I am not saying its alpha line…because the size is smaller and the focal length flange is shorter…but look closely.

    1. There is no lens release button anywhere to be found. Just that stupid advertisement printing…
“35mm Full Frame CMOS Image Sensor”

Makes me sick they print that on the lens mount. I’d rather they printed “Super Steady Shot Inside!” right next to “Look Ma’ No Mirrors” Freaking idiots piss me off with the needless adhoc.

  15. Admin, THIS IS A CRITICAL QUESTION…!!!

If the NEX-6 will be using the new hot shoe…what options for external microphones do we have if they ommited the audio-in jack on that camera??? I predict, ultimate fail with that camera unless they bring some means of using external mic..

  16. I love the look of the A99, really nice camera: if “inside” (with options like “time lapse” in the menu or high ISO performances, for example) is as cool as “outside” I think we might have a winner! And that kinda copper looking like ring outside: kinda really distinctive.
I don’t think I’m gonna get one anyway, I’m still too happy about my A900.
No pop up flash? Who cares. I’ve been shooting since I was 12 (so it’s now 30 years) and I think I used the built in flash with a film camera (Minolta 700si) something in between 5 to 10 times and never again. It might be useful sometimes and results can be pleasant, if used together with the “slow sync” option button.
Definately I’m gonna go for the RX1, it’s gonna be nice to have such a beauty with a Zeiss 35 attached to it: it makes you think about the shooting and the composition! 😀

  17. “Dear” SONY!

Do you want to earn. I want to FF HEX + Normal price +
I have a lot of lenses.

    We have different interests.

Still there FUJI NIKON CANON …

    Enough LEICA – HASSELBLAD !

  18. So two control dials on the RX1 back, plus mode dial, exp comp dial, aperture ring and finally AF mode dial on the front. That is actually pretty awesome.

    1. That is a flash PC sync socket, not HD-SDI (I wish). Though nothing to say there won’t be via accs shoe, maybe even part of the XLR adapter as a ‘pro video connectivity adapter’?

  19. I really doubt there will be any significant IQ differences between a NEX-5R+Zeiss 24 1.8 and the RX1. Well, except that the RX1 will be $1000 more expensive.

  20. Look at the photo from the side!!! The release is on the bottom of the lens!!!! The ring and where the lens begins makes it look like it could be mounted!!!!

    1. Carl Zeiss did announce they were going to be showing off AF lenses for unnamed mirrorless cams. Plus a while ago they said they are only making FF lenses no more APS-C. So maybe? But I think putting those things together, it is more likely they will be making some FF AF lenses for the VG900 and upcoming FF NEX (they said coming mid 2013).

This is definitely fixed lens, but FF NEX is only 6-9 months away and my bet is CZ are making FF lenses for it! Also this is not an Alpha brand camera, it is a niche premium ‘Sony’ or perhaps ‘Cybershot’.

      1. AFAIK the NEX users who want to use FF need to get LA-EA3 and A-mount lenses. Quite neat, clean solution – there’s no point in building 4th line of the lenses (after A, A DT and E) when you can easily use existing gear. Sony needs to build up E-mount (APS-C) lenses first, then they can think about expanding further – and that won’t be achieved in next 5 years with the current speed.

        1. Yeah, but there is nothing stopping third parties from making native FF lenses for NEX. It is quite convenient that CZ are announcing mirrorless lenses at photokina where Sony is launching the first FF E-Mount camera. That and Sony / CZ partnership and that CZ have already designed a 35mm f2 lens for the RX1. Sony are getting their partner CZ to design FF lenses for their NEX cams for enthusiasts and Sony do the DT lenses for NEX. Its a pretty clever plan, especially for all the whining that Sony don’t have enough lenses for HEX let alone a FF lens line up, for which Sony will stick with A-Mount.

          1. Hey man, I am just saying it like it is….what other lens on earth do you see there that would have something akin to a small lever be sticking out on the lens?

Because of its position, I am willing to put money that the front of the lens (focusing mechanism) comes out but not the aperture ring and thats how you would change the lens lines, 50, 35, 24, 85 and all of them will be f2. Saves cash in producing the aperture mechanism in all of them.

            You read it here first!!

          2. I forgot to add….

The back of the camera will definitively make or break it!

            BOOM!

            You read it here first…again.

  21. Any one notice the A99 mode change dial has a button right in the middle?

I like the copper/orange ring, such good match with black colour. It looks like RX1 has the same lens ring as the A99. Do you think its detactable lens on the RX1?

  22. Oh and the top photo of the RX1 shows two little clip points or possibly hinges in the screen, very much like a NEX and nothing like an RX100, could still be a tilt-y job?

  23. My opinions are different to quite a few on here but based on the images only;

A99 – has small pop-up flash. Same LCD tilting mechanism as A77.

NEX 6 – definitely has tilting LCD. The hinge is quite clear. Some sort of bi-navi system between NEX 5 and 7.

RX1 – that lens is detachable in my opinion. Otherwise why have such a definite flange? I think the orange ring stays on the camera and the rest comes off. There is a whole piece of the front that none of the pictures show – that’s where the release button is!! And I disagree with whoever said the orange ring is ugly – it looks great!!

    1. R-series never got interchangeable lenses. I don’t see it changing. For ILCs there are NEXes.
R-series was made of large-sensor compacts. RX1 perfectly fits in it.

    2. If you look at the top of the A99, it doesn’t look like the flash (if it is a flash) would pop-up high enough.

However, wasn’t there a rumour that the A99 would have a built-in LED for video? Maybe it’s that.

      1. If that is indeed a pop-up whatever, just how difficult would it have been, given the number of images leaked, to have taken just one with the whatever raised?

  24. Also admin any info on the viewfinders available? Would be amazing if they did an OVF bright frame finder with exposure and settings info in it via the smart accs shoe! That would make this about my perfect camera, or a FF X100 with hybrid OVF/EVF.

      1. Yeah I read that, but what I am getting at is that being that this new hotshoe has data connectivity there is a chance there could be a data readout (similar to OVF SLR) to show exposure and settings info at the bottom of the OVF.

  25. Looking at these finally on a real computer, that RX1 is freakin’ tiny! Being that that is a 49mm thread on the lens, the same size as NEX and X100, that gives a pretty strong idea how absolutely small this FF RX1 is. It is smaller than a NEX-7 and barely bigger than the RX100, smaller in width than the RX100 with lens out! This is an absolutely revolutionary camera.

    1. yup, especially since it is a Full Frame sensor camera!

I just dont get it about people complaining it being expensive. I do wish it to be slightly cheaper (perhaps D600 price?) but not as cheap as some suggested :/

  26. I’m curious to see the low-light performance of the new Nex 5R and 6 sensor compared to the Nex 7. I think I’d still go for a Nex 7 if there is no new Nex coming soon.

I wanted sooo bladly to see a new Nex 7 coming instead of this RX1.

  27. hu! Nex-6 doesnt have microphone input and may not have audio level control like canon EOS M. Video shooters wants these things in a $999 camera. By the way, $999 for body only or with kit lens? Looks like something is good and something is not. When GH3 comes out … all these might look like crippled cameras in terms of hybrid functionality

    1. I have asked this to admin here and on facebook page. No answer yet. I want to know if they’re going to provide a way to use external mic on NEX-6..if not, that’s a big fail, specially since it’s using a hotshoe and some users expect to mount external mics.

  28. Am I the only one not really blown away with the A99s Spec?
I currently own the A77 and am struggling to find many reasons to upgrade. I’m not really into all this video that this camera seems to be into, if I were I would buy a dedicated video device such as the NEX-VG30.

Is it to much to ask for a camera to be primarily about taking photos. If they didn’t spend so much on the video functions we could have a similar priced product with a massive buffer, tethering, Multi core processing for faster proccesing of things like HDR, better Jpeg engines, more x-points and so on… things that people KEEP asking for!!

    1. Maybe some of that will come as a firmware update…oh wait I drifted off into la la land there for a moment…I meant to say when they release the replacement A77 in a year.

    2. The A77 has not-so-stellar high-ISO performance, worse than some NEX-5n or other 16Mp sensors from Sony. The A99 is in another league in this department.

      1. undoubtedly it will have a much better ISO as you would expect from a larger sensor but what else does it bring to the table for the photographer aside from a slightly better focusing system. Remember this camera is basically £1000 more than the A77, most of that money seems to have been directed to videographers which I think is wrong given that it is a first and for-most a camera. It would have been nice to see peoples requests answered on the photographic side of things.

    1. > RX1 joke?

No, another TIPA award, something like “The best mirrorless camera ever”. Although I agree that there is a sense of humor in this ad campaign. Quite unexpected from a giant.

        1. No, I never did… as I know how these rumor sites work.

That cannot stop me from reminding the Admin the mistake he made by comparing this compact non-alpha camera to a NEX in his persuation.

Yes, I love this site too… and that’s the only reason I’m writing the comment for its betterment. Otherwise, I wouldn’t really care.

    2. unless your a total studio photographer with complete control over your lighting and are only shooting iso 100, that extra range in the sensor is well worth the 1000$ (for a pro). This allows you to have lee-way in your raws for all those wedding shots.

Aside from that – for photographers – this camera brings improved AF which will be even better in low light because of the higher iso capabilities. The ability to actually shoot wide angle.. Then there are marginal improvements like having a button on the mode dial (Trust me the a77’s lack is really annoying if your shooting fast)

There are other marginal improvements which totally justify the differences.. Which is why I will sell my a77 a a loss to buy this cam.

For your average amateur though.. ya.. get an a77.

  29. Hi,

it looks like a nice girl’s camera!
Deceive by the price and body.
    At $2800.00 , looks like a $300.00 camera!
It s supposed to be a professionnal camera.

    1. mmhh, so small cameras = girls’ cameras, large cameras = boys’ cameras? I thought that a “girls’ camera” would imply also (in a negative sense) lack of functionality and abundance of stylish design quibbles, such as the pink or violet color of the body, etc.
RX100 does not remotely look like a girls’ camera, nor does this new RX1…

    2. Really, I thought most girls bought m4/3.

This is a very serious camera, FF with a Zeiss lens for 2’800.
Let’s wait for reviews and real world test before dissing it.
I saw many comments similar to the ones posted here when the Fuji X-100 leaked.
Not until real reviews and use did we understand how great it was and it became a commercial success.

    3. LOL you have my vote for “worst attempt at being a troll” for the year.

Now go off and play with your iPhone.

  30. It is shame that one can not re-use the magnificent lens on the RX1 on other cameras.
While cameras are significantly improved every two years, great lenses stay great forever.

On my Nex-5n I use the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 about 90% of the time. (I own most of other the e-mount lenses) With the RX1, I get the same focal length, with much larger sensor. That is not bad.

Does anyone know the size of the RX1. (H,W&L)

    1. According to mirrorless rumours, it is around the size of the GX1 Panasonic. I sized it up against my RX100 which I’m in the process of attaching a cold shoe to, it is bigger, but not that much. Height wise is about the height of a NEX-5, bit thicker body, no big grip. It is damn small. Same filter thread as most HEX lenses, so lens around the size of Sigma 30mm roughly.

    2. I shoot my 5N with the Zeiss 24 90% of the time as well. I’ve been considering an upgrade to full frame. I am very intrigued by the RX1. I won’t be an early adapter as I want to see that it’s truly a step up from my current combo, which is quite pleasing to me.

  31. I’m wondering: Is the new 24mp FF sensor going to become like the next 16mp sensor? If so, then will Sony again make the stupid move of handing out their new FF sensor (with on sensor Phase Detect) to Nikon? Or, have they already?

‘Cuz, then, Nikon might just be bringing us to tears by slapping the sensor on something like their Nikon 1 type cameras, and we may see the first FF mirrorless ILC coming from Nikon. Afterall, on-sensor-PDAF goes together with the concept of their Nikon 1s too.

RX1 would then indeed be a “game changer” where it starts the game of FF compacts, and may just lose in its own game…. as I’m pretty sure that if Nikon gets their hand on the sensor, they can come up with FF lenses much faster for their new mount… adopters of RX1 would then be stuck with a fixed focal length of 35mm… cursing Sony.

Again, it’s all a big IF. Nothing to take seriously.

    1. Not sure if Nikon would be allowed to use the on sensor PDAF as Sony and Nikon each hold their own patents in this area for different technologies.

The V1/J1 sensor wasn’t produced by Sony either (Aptina).

      1. I agree.

However, in my opinion, Sony didn’t enter this market smartly, and I’m afraid that RX1 would be something like their showcase camera, that mostly stays at showcase. Something like their first OLED TVs at ~$10000.. something to buy and brag while showing it off on shelves.

I’m also not really sure who RX1 targets… It’s a non-alpha compact of $2800 that normal users of non-alpha compacts cannot afford…. It’s a “PRO” non-alpha compact with a fixed focal length of 35mm… that I doubt would appeal to the same PROs that A99 targets. So, who are these PROs I don’t know that would love running back and forth with a fixed 35mm compact.

Thus, in my opinion, Sony messed up the idea here of an FF compact completely here, and in case other companies do follow Sony, they might make a smarter move than this.

        1. They might be aiming for that same crowd of people willing to pay premium for a good rangefinder-type camera. Most rangefinder users I know usually want to stick to one lens only anyway, and getting it in actual fullframe is a cherry on top. Besides, hard to get better than a Zeiss for your camera.

        2. They target everyone wanting top image quality and having the money to get it. Even I, a point-and-shoot amateur, drool over this camera. It’s incredible to be able to have a full-frame camera with top of the line, bright lens in your pocket.

    1. Where the A77 has the flash release button with lightening bolt on it the A99 has a button with a C. What does the C stand for? The location of the focus mode switch on the A77 is occupied by what looks like continuous turn dial without letters. Both these confuse me.

  32. About the RX1, a FF 24×36 sensor is useful in a interchangeable lens system (like Nex..), to keep the right field of view of legacy lenses (and dof abilities of course..) but in a PAS body (no finder…) with fixed 35mm lens at $2800 !?????….
    That’s a marketing move… 😉

  33. :(((( A99 have same video button that can be pushed when opening LCD display. And play button very low – You cannot find it when want to see foto in EVF – mostly press Digital zoom button than play. And LCD screen that couldnt be made horisontal in one move without tilting. Im not happy at all :((((

  34. On the nex-6 picture, you can see inside the hot shoe mount, a bunch of electrical contacts hidden under the front metal lip.

  35. Still miss that early concept build of the fullframe that had the tilted back frame to make it easier on the nose. The many, many ports on the side alleviate some of my qualms though.

  36. No FF NEX camera? Then I’ll pass on Sony and go with Fuji X-E1 for the time being. Better IQ, better lenses.

The A99 is very nice, though.

  37. $2799 and no viewfinder? Another ripoff!! No, thanks!

Seems Sony has to recover from losses in their imaging division…

IMHO they are very wrong. If Sony was clever, they would buy Sigma and make FOVEON their main system. Just imagine FOVEON quality with great high iso. That would be a winner.

    1. It is unlikely that current Foveon sensor design can achieve better high ISO performance than Bayer designs. Stacked sensors lose light at it passes through every layer. High ISO really is not the problem, Foveon is not designed to do sports/action anyways. It is the slowness of the camera that sucks.
I like Foveon, own a DP1s, and is considering DP1 Merrill. The sharpness is unreal. I am with you that I hope a larger company with bigger research budget can advance the Foveon sensors.

  38. So…the RX1 is perfect for my dad. He loves very high quality but he is to old for D-SLR/SLT and the RX1 is much cheaper than a Leica for example.

What is wrong? Is there a limitation for the size of compact-camera? I think not. Most of the people wouldn´t not buy this camera, but the concept is well and Sony is one of the first who is concentrating on the image quality in a camera and not more and more features. Okay…they do both. But if Nikon made this kind of camera everyone would talk positive. Small sensors isn´t good…big sensor isn´t good.

    ….??!

    1. Don’t worry – in some places people really love the whole idea! It’s just that SAR since the arrival of NEX lives through a regular huge waves of trolls – eventually you’ll get used to it and just ignore idiots without money nor life.

    2. For me, only the price is wrong. I bet the IQ will be very good or even stellar, a sensor Sony and Zeiss brand lense makes a fatal combo. But at almost 3000$/3000euro/19000Francs (yes, the french currency before Euro) it’s hard to swallow 🙁 even for photo-gears lovers 😉

    1. So… I’m going to need another adapter from Sony to make my 58 flash work on this damn ISO shoe. Better be a free one in the box!

  39. The last few days have been intense for followers of this blog!

I don’t normally follow it that much over a weekend as our dear admin takes a needed rest and doesn’t post that much till Monday, but not this weekend….

I was up, and high with optimism about Sony then down with cynical despair, and this happen several times this weekend, so much so I was think about getting tested for bipolar disorder.

One post was full of writings about a new PRO NEX and the a99 having a flash (meh) and then not, and then out of the blue we learn that Sony is using their flagship full-frame sensor from the a99 in a pocket camera that is NOT a NEX, but it will have optional viewfinders and stuff………….. Ouch for the NEX crowd.
And it’s a fixed lens, and its $2,800 cool???

Let’s see, then I’ll need one in 35mm and a 85mm for now, but can I get a 70-400 zoom too?
Maybe that’s the future, lenses with build-in cameras
Hopefully we will learn that it’s not a fixed lens but then what would it be a E-Mount, and A-Mount or something new?

I think this week is going to be wild!

  40. These pics of the NEX-6 look like a much more finished product than the previous leaked pics. This is definitely the love child of the NEX-5N(R) and NEX-7. For me this strikes the perfect balance for form and funtcion in the NEX line up…just need the the lenses ;-P

  41. You can see the pop up flash on the a99 much more clearly in these images. It seems to be much smaller but useful as trigger. pretty exciting seeing these images, cant wait for the full specs.

  42. Sure there are 1-2 details Sony may not have fit in. I don’t know if it is by design, but that’s how they keep me wanting to upgrade. Whatever, to me it is working. This is exciting. I love my A77, and I am ready to go full frame. Hopefully I will be able to recover some of the A99 costs by selling my A77. I’m looking forward to popping my 85mm f/1.4 on and seeing the edges of the lens for the first time.

The RX1 is intriguing and I like the 35mm f/2 lens as it is a throwback to an old Konica PS film body I have with the exact same length and aperture. When I went to Europe last year, I took only one body and one lens, the Nex-5 and the 16mm pancake and I got used to the idea of using a fixed focal length all the time. I now use the 85mm on my A77 95% of the time and I don’t own a zoom lens at all. I am not sure what I would buy if I had a zoom lens. I know I could live with the RX1, and it would be a lot easier to buy if I sold both the A77 and the 85mm lens, but then it would be a difficult upgrade path to the A99 successor.

  43. Those RX1 pictures aren’t Photo’s they are CG renders. (which doesn’t mean they aren’t right but they aren’t photos)

  44. A higher spec camera may be called the A9, although the question still stands as to what they will call the successor of the A99.

The pictures of the A99 are very exciting and it is a beautiful camera, something Sony are good at lately, lets hope it performs up to the competition, I fear this is a big crunch time for A mount shooters.
