No NEX PRO camera. There will be a Sony RX1 Full Frame fixed lens camera instead (pictures leaked!)

The guys from Photoprice Canada leaked the super secret pics of a new Full Frame camera with fixed(!) Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 compact lens on it! So the big Sony surprise wasn’t really a NEX alike interchangeable camera but rather a big RX100 compact camera alike camera. This is a super nice camera but my first thought was…”damn, I would have loved to have it with interchangeable E-mount like the upcoming VG900” 🙁

P.S.: The lens has a SONNAR design while the already existing [shoplink 13883 ebay]Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 lens (here on eBay)[/shoplink] is BIOGON.
I fear that most of us will wait until we Sony will release an interchangeable version of it…don’t know if I would spend $3000 on a camera with fixed lens. Would you?

This camera is aimed to compete against the Fuji X100 (specs here) and Leica X2 (specs here). But the RX1 will cost more and have a larger FF sensor. But it still will cost a lot less than a Leica M9!!!

    1. zstan – it’s FF compact, not FF mirrorless.

No separate news for A99 pics?!
      C’mon!!! They are HUGE THING!
You can see that camera got both: Mic input and headphones output! Thing people been REALLY waiting for!!!!
If I’m not mistaken – on a shot from top we ALSO SEE BUILD-IN FLASH UNIT.
      (sorry for caps 😉 )

        1. very smart of sony to make it fixed lens!! it keeps it even more compact, and the firmware and lens corrections are tilored for that zeiss lens = extremely high quality images. all the while, not competing with its own a99 sales.

        2. this should be a low light monster!!! no mirror slap, wide 35mm can be easily hand held. full frame sensor of 24mp is more lowlight sensitive than the 36mp nikon d800.

killer compact camera!! is it better than leica m9 + zeiss 35mm?

    2. So THIS is why this camera was considered a ‘hybrid’ … something between a compact camera and a FF camera.

And THIS is why there wouldn’t be any new range of lenses for it … the lens is fixed.

Now, let’s admit it guys — despite so many hundreds of posts here over the last eight months (the first hint about this camera was out before last X-mas, remember?) … noone figured it out. 🙂

    1. An A-mount FF would be much thicker, because the mount-to-sensor distance is greater.

A E-mount FF with an A-mount adapter would again be thick. Take off the adapter, and you have a thin camera.

      1. Still won’t be as thin as compact.
Simply because in compact you have much more freedom in messing with sensor and lens allowing for a perfect set with very portable size – compare this lens with current E-mount 35mm – it’s TINY! 😀

        1. yup it is TINY for its length and aperture!

I do wonder, is it possible for E-Mount or NEX FF lens sizes to be this big? or at least around this size and with this kind of aperture??

If it requires the aperture ring to be placed outside, I don’t mind it at all. From the current NEX lineup, if making a lens to 1.4 requires to be large, then the only benefit for NEX is smaller and lighter body only 🙁

  1. Whaaa.. is that a fullframe lens? BTW I almost think that is the distance scale but it’s just focus limiter x_x

It certainly does not have any trait of the normal NEX tho.

  2. What about EVF?
Otherwise it looks great, an up-sized, ICL, RX100. I have an RX100 and that is a great camera.
But is there really room for an EVF in that small body. No EVF in a FF camera would be as retarded as Leica M9! 🙂

  3. That´s not a systemcamera for interchangeable lenses! This is a FullFrame Camera with build in lens like Fuji X100 and Sony RX100 😉

By the way: I want that!!!

    1. No, look at the dial on the right/bottom, that’s the focus mode selector.
It is probably not a lens interchangable system (RX instead of NEX). But it is going to be a killer range finder that will not only obliterate Leica M series, but also Fuji X, Sigma DP, possibly Canon EOS-M. Seeing the success achieved by RX100, Sony is smart to come up with this bad boy. I only hope that it will be priced right ($1700-2000??)

  4. leica would not die~~~~~but its really good for us!!!! wait for the SPECS of RX1!!!!!

BTW, SAR still not get the SPECS of RX1 yet????

  5. That protruding joystick on the A99 seems like a train-wreck in the making. I’m drafting my request for an RMA in advance and the extended warranty will be a must.

  6. Wow, that is one SEXY camera! Though it looks smaller then the NEX7 and probably slightly larger then the RX100.

So, I’m guessing to make the lens smaller then a typical FF DSLR lens, Sony chose to place the aperture ring on the lens? AWESOME!!

Now this is how a modern and at the same time traditional camera should look like!

Though now it makes me wonder, will there be another NEW mount? and considering it has the name RX1, guess it doesnt belong in the NEX family?

The absence of OLED EVF and or a proper grip will be a deal breaker for me :/

Oh and admin, could this be the same camera that Steve Huff mentioned?

  7. A manual aperture ring on the kit lens? Beautiful. They really are going after Leica.
I’m praying that it has an EVF. It would be incredibly stupid to sell a product like this without one.

  8. the source before told us that FF NEX would be a “PRO” camera. but by inspecting this RX-1, i can’t see any wheels on it (nex-7 have 3 wheels). both the look and the button can’t make me belief this is a “PRO” camrea………………

also, there is no EVF on this RX-1, which NEX-7 do have one. so how can we believe this is a “PRO” camera????

    1. I’m pretty sure they use the Sonnar name to mean whatever they want it to nowadays. The original formula hasn’t been in fashion since double-gauss designs took over the world.

      1. It’s probably a reverse-Sonnar, like the e-mount Ziess 24/1.8. Zeiss has to be creative with the design to improve telecentricity.

    2. Sony designed more than a handful of 35mm Sonnars in the past – usually for compact 35mm film cameras like Rollei35’s and Contax T-models.

Also the 1.8/24mm (35mm eq.) Zeiss lens for Nex is a Sonnar.

  9. Why would they not include an evf? Could the camera be a grand or less? I imagine they’ll want to charge a premium for it- if so, not including an evf strikes me as a HUGE oversight. Maybe $1,199 body only, $2,000 with Zeiss?

  10. I’m very curious about the RX-1. It will be a serious contender if it’ll let me use my Zeiss Alphas with an adapter.

  11. No thanks, I will not ‘upgrade’ to the A99 from my A77. ISO hot shoe, lack of in camera flash, etc, etc…

  12. FF in a compact body? Insane ! Wow! Sony you devil you !
Having said that, they should put a 24-70 f2.8 or 24-50mm f2.8 zoom lens in there instead of a prime. Missed opportunity! NEX FF should be on Sony’s plan next year for sure!

    1. Nope. It’s fine with the prime. More in line with a classic manual 35mm camera. If you want a zoom get the RX100 or wait for the full frame interchangable lens camera.

    2. lol. Prime is just PERFECT. I’d be greatly disappointed if they’d try to put in huge zoom in front of it. Instead we got Zeiss f/2 35mm prime lens… I couldn’t imagine any better and still portable combo!

  13. hard to say if the mock up is for a real camera. look at the lens’ marking, you go from 0.3m to infinity straight away??

this might be intentional though like the “no” instead of “on” for the nex 7.
The lack of grip or obvious wheels (looks like there is one at the back a la RX100 though) is kind of a deal breaker.
    and where is the EVF?
Without the accesory port there is no option to add one after…
    hum, wait till the 12th

    1. Isn’t that a selection ring separate from the manual focus ring? The lens is either in 0.2-0.35 or 0.3-infintity focusing.

    1. Isn’t that a selection ring separate from the manual focus ring? The lens is either in 0.2-0.35 or 0.3-infintity focusing.

  14. If the body only is around a grand I could make do without an evf. That lens is going to be so expensive. I wish this was an A mount, where you could choose from more affordable lenses.

  15. Looks like a great first generation camera. One problem. No EVF. I will probably wait for the second generation with the bugs worked out and an EVF.

Maybe Fuji will follow with a FF…. Or Olympus.

  16. A qualified but enthusiastic “yes” on the RX1 — if it is turns out to be an E-mount camera and if the feature set is right I am very interested. Though, as always, price is a factor though Ia would choose mirrorless over a FF DSLR if the price and features were comparable.

For a fixed lens camera? No way.

That said, I don’t feel any need to be first on the block to own one. I can wait to see the full specs and hear some reports from real-world users before I pull out the credit card.

  17. Why on earth they did it fixed lens? Interchangable would be a bestseller NO.1 camera, but who would want to spend a whole lot of money on a fixed lens ff? I just don’t get it, this is so strange, so I guess this is not fixed lens

    1. Fuji sold over 100,000 x100s. Lots of people will pay big money for a camera like this. I would if I had the money. This is pretty much my dream camera.

    2. 35mm fixed lens makes a lot of sense. It will be a killer and very versatile rangefinder-style camera (without a VF it can’t be called a true range finder). I own a Sigma DP1s and is thinking about getting the new DP1 Merrill (amazing IQ in good light, BTW), now it all has to be re-evaluated.

      1. Yes, it could be a DP2M killer if the price is right. (The Sigma is around £800 in the UK.)

It would be an ideal street and indoor camera.

In many ways it is a modern version of all the dozens of fixed-lens rangfinder cameras that were so popular in the days of film. They usually had good f/2 or f/1.7 lenses, 45 or 50mm. This new Sony is wider angle, I guess to make it more compact.

  18. Too bad for the evf thing…

Anyway, I think the A99 has a built-in flash after all, look on the top behind the microfone. And there is a button for the flash just like on the A77.

    1. Well spotted! man that could be a flash to optically trigger other ones!
no need for a full siz one in this case! Sweet

  19. Oh shit, it is fixed. What will they sell this thing for? $1,299? I know Sony will want to price it higher. It is certainly appealing. That’s my favorite focal length. Very cool. I so want it- but I can’t afford it.

    1. For a full frame with Zeiss 35mm f/2? I’d sell NEX7 in a day if… I’d have one ;P
Sorry but no NEX can offer stuff this camera has. It’s versatile, it’s portable, it’s full frame, it’s got excellent optics, and excellent sensor… seems like it’ll beat crap out of any NEX that’s on a market!

      1. Sure, unless you want any other focal length… The point is, Andrea was telling us to sell our Nex 7s; as nice of a camera as I’m sure this is, it’s a different kind of tool. Had I heeded that advice I’d have no camera body and a bunch of lenses.

      2. If I purely will use this as a street photography tool, then yes. Most likely I’ll sell the NEX7 for this, but considering I do have a need for other focal lengths, guess I’ll stick to the NEX7 for now.

Although, it looks like a great camera and most likely will appeal to street photography crowd or for those who are looking a walk around Full Frame walk around camera.

I’ll get this if I have alot of extra money

  20. That confirms it. I’m going to be bankrupt come October. It seems that I want pretty much everything I’m hearing about from Sony these days. The RX1 looks sensational as a travel/street cam. I can see why Steve Huff would love it.

And the A99… I wasn’t sure from the Xitek photo whether I’d like it. Turns out, I DO! WANT!!

  21. Looks good, but I don’t see any lens release button! Although the orange bayonet mount ring is virtually the same as the A99.

There is no Alpha logo, so I guess it is fixed lens!

  22. hmm, looking at the RX1 and A99 design, this is what I guess how the NEX9 or PRO NEX will look like.
    – Body similar looking as the NEX 7, probably slightly larger to accommodate FF sensor
    – AF/AFC/MF/DMF mode dial at the front, similar like the RX1
    – Absence of pop up flash, replaced with mode dial similar to RX1

Somebody willing to do a NEX9 or PRO NEX mockup?

As for lenses, get ready guys and this is purely speculation but heck, the NEX line is still new anything could happen:
Sony will screw us all up by releasing all new E Mount lenses, designed for FF lens and probably at the size and retaining aperture ring of Leica-like lenses (likely to be bigger due to AF). This would probably explain the lack of new lenses

      1. They could not produce this lens with an A mount, as it needs to be too close to the sensor. An A mount 35mm has to be of inverted telephoto design.

They could however make an E mount version.

  23. Probably Sony has significantly cut down the production costs of a FF sensor. And they’re now starting the switch from APS-C to FF, which others will have to follow.

The low-cost D600 which has the same sensor is yet another indicator for this theory.

Unfortunately, that also means that they’re selling the A99 with considerable profit margin, probably much higher than before.

    1. Probably Sony is doing this to bring down the cost of fabricating FF sensors, if this camera sells like the X100, it will be a huge profit boost or ROI for Sony! and by using more FF sensors throughout their range and selling them to competitors (to make bring down the cost due to high volume), Sony would be able to invest and increase the production of the FF sensors (they probably manage to get a good yield these days), hence in the long run, making FF sensors would just be slightly more expensive then APSC. That’s my guess behind Sony strategy.

  24. Ok, it’s official… I’m in love with the a99.

The RX1 is a really lovely camera, but i don’t know.. In times like this is a kind of weird to use this technology for a fixed lens camera.

    IMHO

  25. Meh, EVF is awesome if you have one but lately I have using my LCD 80% of the time on my X100. I can just get a Zacuto Z-Finder or something similar and there you go, an EVF. Well its going to be mine soon after its released, I’m glad I haven’t bought RX100 yet because I’m considering to get it, but with this baby soon to be released I can’t see why I would want it anymore. 35mm f2.0 on a full frame sensor, that is sweet, if its priced right at $1000ish or even lower, it would be a good deal. It’s good that sony is coming out with something that is out of the box to take out Nikon and Canon, if this keeps up, I don’t see why they would lose to the two giants. Also I can definitely see an FF NEX in the future, if they can create the RX1 I don’t see why they can’t do an FF NEX. Keep up the good work and thanks Andrea for getting this rumor =)

    1. I’m the exact opposite with my X100. In fact, I bought a leather half-case that covers the LCD altogether, so I don’t use it at all.

  26. This is a totally unexpected camera from Sony. It doesn’t appear to have EVF port, or other control wheel. The control wheel is on the lens designed for this model (a new standard?), so any regular alpha lenses need a new adapter with aperture ring and perhaps manual only.

If I can mount external LCD viewfinder via HDMI, I can see this RX1 could be a powerful landscape machine, If this thing sells for $1000 body only, I am wondering how many people will cancel D600 per-order just for this?

  27. judge by the naming scheme, there will be an RX10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    a APSC sensor series…. with CZ 16-50 or 80 fixed lens…

you read it here first :p

  28. Please, Please!!!!! I want to deactivat the Movie Record Button on my a77 and on the a99. I hate this button when using M mode.

    1. the recording button is always in the way for NEX series… time after time.. video is triggered when u least wanted it… they should have move all of the camera button to the LEFT side of the camera!!!

having hardly use the video button, i wish it would be customized like other button and have a wheel to select video mode for it to be on and return to movie function, else it is whitebalance of soemthing i can customise

  29. Note that it has a 49mm diameter with full frame covering (if this is true)…
mmmmm…zeiss lens with the diameter of almost all E-mount, mmmm zeiss promoting new line of lenses with full frame covering for mirrorless…. i think the chainslave is now closing

  30. One thing to remember … Fuji started off with a fixed-lens caméra (X100), and then came a camera for interchangeable lenses. Same thing happened with Konica Hexar back in the 1990’es.

If the RX1 is a succes, we are sure to see a sibling made for interchangeable lenses in a year or two 🙂

      1. My money is on the 36mp, D800 sensor. The 24mp A99 sensor seems to be designed with video functions at its core.
The $3K price tag sure is steep, if you think about it, it is more than A99 and D800, albeit body-only. A Fuji X-pro with a 18mm F2 lens costs $2300. RX1 should not priced much above this mark.

  31. RX1 and A99 mounts look exactly the same: same color, same text. Compare the images. Could the RX1 be A-mount?

But then again, there’s no lens release button on the RX1…

  32. Two questions for dear Andrea:

    1) Do you really think the RX1 will sell for $3k? I see it selling at substantially less…

    2) Do you miss your Nex7 yet? 🙂

  33. I can’t respond to the RX1 poll because it all depends on the mount. If its an Alpha A-Mount then yes! If not, I’ll just do more arm curls and stick to the A900/A99 for everything.

      1. Ooops! Thanks I wasn’t paying attention. Besides I couldn’t justify both anyway, so my money is on the A99 and hopefully some new Zeiss glass.

  34. Zoom with your legs, people.
There are many advantages of a fixed lens design. It is interesting people complain about contradictory things, e.g.:
    1. Lenses are too big for the body! (that’s what you get for having zoom)
    2. Pancake lenses are too slow!
    3. Fixed FL lenses are lame (but they are fast and small, with good IQ)

You just have to pick your compromises, it is just not possible to have everything in photography, with ANY amount of money.

      1. Using a fixed lens camera is all about working within constraints. You can take great portraits with a 35mm lens, you just can’t take passport photo portraits of people framed above the shoulder, unless you purposefully want distortion.

        1. Agree, zoom with legs and cropping are important skills, if you hope to benefit from the advantages provided by such design. With an excellent lens and 36mp, there is a lot of potential in this package.

          1. I tried that foot zoom in the past first time I fell over a cliff , second time I ended up in the ocean, third time I was attacked by lions lol Now I use zoom lenses , though they are tricky now that the lions ate my left arm

  35. Hi Just for my own curiosity I did some sizing based on the known fact that the filter thread diameter is 49mm:

    width: approx 89mm (3.5″)
    flange to sensor: approx 15.9mm

Interesting markings on the lens, it looks like they have set hyperfocal distances for f5.6.

    Sam

    1. On fixed prime cameras, the flange is arbitrary. This lens likely has elements that are right up against the sensor, like the Fuji X100.

  36. Why is it necessary to have a fullframe at 35mm? Full frame is good for low light and DoF. 35mm+FF might be good for architectural night shots. But I’d rather have 50mm+FF+1.4 and be able to take all kinds of people shots and still be able to take decent night (although cropped) architectural shots.

    1. Pending how it actually performs, in terms of build and specs, this is the perfect professional’s street camera.

      1. Street camera… Absolutely, but is that really something that is sought after by a majority of the people buying full frame cameras?

        1. There are something like a dozen FF cameras for you, if this doesn’t seem to fit. The whole idea is of course that it should be small, so why are you whining? Go buy a 1Ds and 85/1.2 if you want to shoot models.

          1. There’s only one other small camera that is full frame that can take a 50mm lens. And that brand is simply too expensive (even though this one seems to be really pricy as well for some mysterious reason).

The only quarrel with the camera that I have is Sony’s choice of lens. Hell I don’t even mind the absence of a viewfinder.

      2. Exactly, for news photography you need a fast 35mm to capture the moment, that’s where canon and nikon started their boom, just make sure this is a solid camera, not some drop it and you loose it toy.

Plus it is great to train yourself with a fixed lens for your photo skills, look at other FF 35mm packages, even the rumored d600 + 35mm 1.4 from nikon would be more than $3500, plus a lot more load….this is a good test for sony before the real deal comes out

  37. As much as I like the RX1, the people at Sony are on crack if they think they’re gonna sell these at anywhere close to $3,000.

      1. No competition? You can pick up the x100 for far less- and get the fantastic hybrid viewfjnder to boot. Or get the upcoming d600 and the Nikon 35mm f2 and save around $1,200. By the way, the x100 should get an update soon. I laugh at people trying to justify this idiotic price- anyone who pays it has more money than sense. Thing is, very few will pay it. We’re talking Sony, not Leica. And this camera is not as stylish as the x100. Not even a viewfinder. smh

  38. This RX-1 reminds me of those fine FujiFilm medium format film cameras of the past with fixed lenses. Very expensive and treasured by a very small group of photographers. It even has a wide angle lens like they did.

  39. shit, can’t change the lens.. so it’s like fuji X100 on full frame sensor.. if this camera sell $1000 i will buy it, but if price is more i will skip it and wait for Nex FF!! 😀

  40. Ehm, is it me or does the A99 have the same color ring lens mount as the RX1?
Are you sure it’s fixed? Why would they give a ring the same color if it’s not a mounting point for a lens? Or is this just the new Sony style?

  41. Where are those funny trolls saying that Sony is not able to listen to photographers dreams? I mean FF fixed lens!! That doesn’t sound like a toy camera at all. Oh those trolls!!!

PS: A99 is amazing. What is that new copper ring around the mount? It’s aggressive to say the least!! GREAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!!

    1. It’s great that it’s FF and the lens could be great. But the lack of a vf solution and no shutter speed dial is a huge mistake. It has the price, sensor, and lens of a pro-ish/advanced amateur but with the control layout for beginners/p&s types.

      1. With an aperture tiny on the lens itself, and exposure comp on the top of the camera, shutter speed could easily be adjusted with a dial on the back of the camera. What it the problem with that?

        1. Indeed! But you now, nowadays it’s so fashionable to look for retro styled bodies that people forgot to wonder why they’d want it like that.

  42. Fixed lens camera in Fuji X100 fashion? Yes, it’s fine, since the price is not too bad. Full frame with fixed lens with this price tag? No, it’s too much to take for me. Instead of $3000 with a fixed lens, please return with one at $2300 or so with a compact full frame body, though.

  43. Thanks Adrea for telling everyone before to start selling their NEX 7’s. I am sure everyone who has flogged them on ebay will be grateful.

No, its not your fault, but I think the measurement of excitement on your posts should be better measured.

I haven’t sold my NEX 7, but I would closely look at this cam. It feels like its going to be….the SHIT! woohoo!

  44. It can’t be $3000.

This is essentially a digital version of a Contax T2/T3 high-end compact, except with a faster Zeiss lens…

    1. I agree. To price this thing anywhere close to $3,000 is idiotic- it doesn’t even have an evf! This is not a Leica. If the pricing is accurate Sony will join the ranks of Sigma when it comes to laughable pricing. One of the main expenses of the X100 was the hybrid viewfinder. No such expense here. $3,000?! That’s insane!

    2. Worst case scenario is that you can buy an NEX-6 and sort of upgrade by downgrading. ;~)

EDIT: that was in response to Patrick.

  45. I don’t know if I would like a camera without a viewfinder, optical or electronic. If they created this why not an interchangeable lens mount. Maybe instead of producing $2000 lenses, Sony will be producing $2000 lenses with the camera attached to it.

  46. It is a dear shame, however, that this cam appears not not have a slue of an EVF or any other eyepiece.

    That…would be a shame

    1. I suspect the new Sony ISO-esque hotshoe has a high-speed data connection (totally just a guess/hunch) and it will allow for an EVF.

If not, it is a real shame. Still I doubt I’d buy this camera. I would LOVE to buy this combo but with the Zeiss lens being removable.

      1. Its up to taste, my man. I love 35mm and 90% of my photos are made with this focal length so I am an inmediate buyer.

        Questions to answer:

        1) EVF?
        2) AF speed like RX100 or even NEX 7?
        3) Focus Peaking too? if so, then MF is a no brainer.
        4) Maybe wide angle converters like X100? If not, no biggie.
        5) If this combo is $2500, sony gets itself a winner.
        6) Video, 35/24 and 60/50p as well? Hopefully not locked on 60p only.

When will we see the 50mm version?

      2. Did not think of that. Would be cool but then you would have to drop another 400 on the EVF accessory. Then you are back to not being able to use a viewfinder and speedlight. Cool camera but it seems that SOny would have got more out of this camera if it was a nex FF with the release of good glass options. At least it makes my decision an easy one. It will be the 99.

    1. 35mm is the perfect walk around lens. Look at the sales of Fuji X100.
The lens choice is right, but to include flash and exclude build in EVF seems weird to me.

  47. On an unrelated note: that lens is a 35mm f/2 SONNAR. Just me or is that new Zeiss design? I guess this means whatever CMOS sensor Sony is using still doesn’t handle the incident angles of a biogon design well enough which is disappointing.

I am excited to see this optical design in a interchangeable lens (and I’m about positive it will happen) because the sonnar design seem to be sharp, like the planars but with smoother bokeh. However, the lens not only extends out a fair distance it clearly recedes pretty far back into the camera. A removable version will be a big lens just like the ZE 24mm sonnar. Guess I was kinda hoping for some viable compact biogon designs.

    1. Considering that I shoot my NEX-5N with the Zeiss 24 attached about 90% of the time, I certainly am not complaining about a fixed 35 on the FF camera. It’s a great focal length for the street photography I like to shoot.

EDIT: that was supposed to be a reply to Lotus eater.

    2. Joel, are you pretty sure that the CZ SONNAR cannot have a internal focus design? Can you give some examples? I’m sorry about my ignorance.

      1. Ping, I’m not saying that it can’t have internal focus–it probably does. I am saying if you look at the distance between the sensor plane (marked on the top plate) and the front element of the lens, it appears to be a long lens for a rangefinder/mirrorless design. I was hoping a full-frame sensor would be more forgiving than the NEX-7 with small photosites and allow the excellent and compact biogon design to be used.

  48. Suck it X100!!! I wish it was priced at about $1800 rather than $3000. I’d buy one if it were sub $2000 and ditch all my Nex stuff.

      1. This is true. The X100 got many fans thanks to the viewfinder (whether hybrid or not) because it still followed a tradition in photography and a need.

  49. LOL. My first idea about the “super secret camera” was “It’s a full frame RX100!” … and then I scrapped that because it was supposed to be a NEX. 🙂

But if Steve Huff drooled over it, it just had to be something pocketable, not a DSLR-sized NEX.

  50. Andrea are you saying that the price you’re hearing is around 3000, or you’re just thinking that sounds about right for what you can tell of the product?

      1. Sony and Steve Huff are both on crack.
This camera should cost no more than $1200
Just under double the price of the RX100.
        It’s a $3000 P&S.
The execs from Sigma must of had some gorilla dung leftover from their SD1 smoke fest and sent Sony some.

        1. Well, if it was interchangeable lens camera, a Zeiss 35mm F2.0 lens itself would cost more than $2000 for full-frame.

However, I am still hoping the price for R1 is under $2000

          1. Zeiss 35mm Distagon for Full Frame is ~$1500 so a full frame body plus lens (sayt he cheapest now is D700 from Nikon) it would bring it to around $2500.

Mmmm… the price is right I am afraid. Of course I would want it cheaper…but full frame isnt cheap by any stretch of the imagination even the budget D600 and cheaper 5D will cost around $1500

      2. Just under 3k? Ouch… I would have a hard nut to crack if it’d be just under 2k. Think about it – how much D600 with a same sensor will cost, again? Yea yea, this one is portable, but hey… it’s just one camera with one lens… and Sony isn’t Leica nor Nikon or Canon to afford overpriced products just for a brand.

    1. So its probably an updated Contax design. Never used one but from what I’ve seen it should give great results.

$3000 is what I was gearing up to spend when i thought this was an NEX with a removable Zeiss lens. The price makes sense but it is a little disappointing.

      1. The price makes sense…but not so much like this because:

        1) Imagine that Sony RX2 is a 50mm variant. You would have spent around $5.5 k in essentially a 2 lens combo (ok, two bodies too but still)

        2) This camera will be worth as much as its video, stills quality and lens quality amount together…if one of these falls short, even $2500 would seem high.

        3) If around $2000/£1800 in the UK, I am so in but it needs a cheap EVF (~£200) to go with it ASAP

  51. Regardless, this is a major breakthrough and though it seems like a commercial risk bodes well for trends that will find their way into the NEX system. Very encouraging.

  52. if this is the nex pro camera they’re introducing then i’m buying Fuji X-E1 instead, has the same EVF as NEX-7 and Fuji’s lenses are brilliant. Was hoping for interchangeable full frame NEX. I already have small compact with 35mm angle of view – X100.

  53. I think I would love this camera.

    Dreaming of a Leica M9 + 35mm,
this would be alot more affordable.

I like 35mm and want something smaller than my dslr for everyday use.

  54. 1. It’s a street photographers ideal focal length
    2. Since it’s FF you can crop to get in a little tighter without losing that much detail.
    3. If it wasn’t a fixed lens the lens would be much bigger.

  55. I don’t know what happen to my previous post regarding the protruding joystick on the A99 but I’ll say it again. It’s a train wreck in the making. I’ll bet it will be the source of many RMA’a and warranty claims for years to come.

Still, if Sony were to develop a pro-level customer service department they would easily attract more tog’ professionals. Ok, I can day-dream the thought.

      1. Not sure what that has to do with this thread but no. I don’t recall my exact post whereby I essentially indicated … ‘if I were buying today’ I would likely go for the D800 but that isn’t my first choice. In fact, I still think about it.

I want to stay with the Alpha mount because of the auto-focus glass from Zeiss. It is the main reason I love my A900 and hopefully, the A99 will also be a hit. Prior to my Alpha gear I was shooting the Leica M8 with Leica primes so I’m hard to please but the Zeiss keeps me in the Sony camp.

        1. Wow looks like you’re really used to the best gear out there. But well, as you’re realizing too, I guess this camera won’t disappoint you neither.. 😉

  56. Further to my last post re: approx size

If this camera is real, the width of the body is smaller than the RX100 which apparently is 102mm vs my estimated 89mm for this camera.

And a small correction to my last post too – they do seem to have some sort of hyperfocal distance choices on the lens, but not specifically for f5.6.

    Sam

    1. From what I am seeing, there is a two positions Wheel on the lens : macro for focusing from 0.2 to 0.35 meters, and an other for focusing from 0.3 to infinity.

Also, it seem it will have an tilt screen as I see little ergo on top of what looks like the screen.

  57. Wow looks like a revival of the old Minolta Hi Matic series. Having an FF sensor build in makes this an perfect travel made without compromising on quality. The Zeiss lens and the function seems equal to Leica. I guess Nikon and Canon getting shocked. This will become a top seller.

  58. $3000 is a ridiculous price with almost for sure more than $2000 profit margin for Sony.

The sensor price difference is maybe some $300 in production. If I am generous, I’d say add $200 for that Zeiss lens. Everything else is standard electronics not much different than any entry-level NEX.

    1. So, how do you explain the E mount CZ24mm cost over $1000?
They need fast processor to handle the increased mp too.
Forget about R/D cost, let’s just assume the body cost about the same as 5N ($500)+ FF sensor (+$300) + CZ lens ($1100), it is reasonable to price this at around or just above $2000.
$3000 is a bit too high; I wonder what the target audience is, if this pricing is true.

    2. I think you’re seriously underestimating the cost of the Zeiss lens. You may be right about the sensor if it uses an existing design like the 24 or 36mpx. If its a new sensor then development costs are a lot to recoup.

  59. You can’t hold a camera with an M43 or bigger sensor steady enough , if it does not have a viewfinder or articulating screen .
    Hence, it’s useless …

  60. I think the REALLY big thing here is that there is a CARL ZEISS 35 mm f/2 lens in existence AND that it sits on a Sony FF camera. Which probably means that such a lens is not too far away from the Alpha Mount????

  61. I don’t mind the price, as long as it is doesn’t have toy controls like the NEX 7. Fixed lens is definitely a no go.

  62. Sony has too much time on their hands while it loses billions. A FF Nex and some nice new e lens would seal the deal for them, but they’re tinkering around. Would love to see future nex cameras with the same smooth rounded design.

  63. Maybe this is the future of photography: Fixed lenses with fixed FL on small cameras with large sensors and many MPs. Like Nokias 41MP sensor in a smartphone. You zoom by cropping. If FF sensors are getting cheaper and less and less noisy, this may be the way to go.

    1. Torsten, I like your idea. But it will be different for FF sensor because the depth of field will be much narrower. It is probably going to take a lot of planning, composing and thinking if using only cropping as zooming.
But like I said earlier, zooming with legs and cropping is enough for my shooting when paired with the 35mm lens. Now, only if the price is right…

  64. So: a fixed lens full frame mirrorless, without EVF, priced around 3000. Ok, why not. But is THIS the reason people should immediately sell their Nex 7, as you said previously? It’s a totally different kind of camera…

  65. I think there is something wrong with the photo though. A 35mm lens cannot have 0.3M to infinity in acceptable focus even at f/22. The infinity range can only occur at 1.3M minimum.

    1. That’s not a distance scale. I suppose it is an AF range limiter, one position for close-up up to 35cm, and the other position for 30cm to infinity.

  66. Well I’ve already got a Zeiss Biogon 35/2 which I use on my NEX 5n. Was desperately hoping for a fullframe with the potential for interchangeable lenses.

  67. i know i won’t be a first adopter but it is good to see a 35mm full frame point and shoot. maybe i can ditch my nikon and go with just x pro 1 and this 35mm FF “P&S”

  68. I don’t know… this really looks like some non-sony move to me. It could easily be a mock-up or something like that. also, could be some desinfo strategy from Sony. could be a lot of things, a FF with fixed lens being the least likely. It is a step down with the whole mirrorless thing. sony knows that. even with a sonnar as fixed lens. They now have the chance to do even better than leica, sensor/bodywise. I don’t think they would screw up that bad…

    1. They’re keeping it compact and tidy.

You’ve got tons of 3rd party shoe-mounted 35 mm OVFs and Sony will very likely offer a shoe-mounted EVF.

    2. Well, we might have to wait…
No spec yet, thus, we don’t know if it is fixed lens or not…after all this is rumor site! We love you Andrea though!!

      12th only two days away!!!

      1. Is it possible that Sony has found a way to make the focus mode switch double as a lens release button? It would be great if this really was an interchangeable lens camera after all.

      2. True. That would mean that that thick orange mount base looking thing is just there for cosmetic reasons. Sad.

      3. The lens release is combined with the shutter release button. Push half way down and the lens comes off.

        😉

I hope this is a game changer. Though I am a M 4/3 person, I want Sony to succeed in a big way.

  69. Sony is really showing a lot more innovation recently. Bodes well for the future (shows a real commintment to imaging).

    1. Yes, I agree. However, remember that the RX100 came in at a relatively high price. I am making the assumption that the RX10, APS-sized sensor compact will fit in between the two; both in terms of performance and price.

    2. Yeah, like that “republican” Oprah, or that “republican” Buffett, or that “republican” Gates, or that “republican” Spielberg, or that….well, you get the picture.

  70. I think Sony is trying to Compete with Big Co’s Like Leica. Look at the Hot shoe on RX 1 no TTL contacts on it. So one has shoot in the Manual mode or Set flash for auto which may not be 100% Accurate.

Sony needs to stay focused & stick with just a few great Models & it will capture the Market. The A850 & A900 were excellent pro cameras with highest resolution. A77 also is a Great Camera in the APS-C. Photographers can’t be going back & forth trying to keep up with the new models. I like to stay with the Full Frame you know the quality is great.

Coming from a SONY TECH like me that turned Pro Photographer years ago. Sony Needs to talk to Photographers & listen to their Needs. Coming up with new Models is good. Need to add Hot shoe for all their P&S Cameras {Like the Lumix LX 7} & NEX cameras. Also stick to their TTL contacts & not Change them. I use a Metz Flashes with an Adapter made for Sony it has worked fine from A100, 350, 580, 850, 900 & A77. Hope they don’t change that. So what I am saying is STANDARDIZE the Important Factors in a CAMERA. Good LUCK.

    1. I think they *are* standardizing right now. So far Sony has four different accessory shoes – the Alpha shoe (inherited from Minolta), the mini-shoe of the NEX series, the “Intelligent Accessory Shoe” (discontinued), and the “Active Interface Shoe” (used on camcorders). Join all of these into one and add an ISO base, and there you have your systemwide standard.

  71. Very unexpected. Close to $3000 is a bit much; a street price of around $2500 is probably more reasonable if you consider that the NEX-7 + 24/1.8 is $2300 and the A99 body only is $2800. Sure it is missing a bunch of stuff that the A99 has, the EVF being the most important one, but you can’t buy a cheaper digital fullframe camera with a fast 35mm prime than that. Anyway, I expect you can attach an optional EVF – I hope so at least.

That said, Sony may have projected it to be a low volume seller; hence, the price of just below $3000. I’m not in the market for a FF + 35mm prime (fixed or interchangeable) so I’ll sit this one out, but there are probably quite a few Henri Cartier-Bresson wannabes out there (no offence) who would buy it.

    Exciting times!

  72. I’m starting to get disappointed with Sony’s inability to think like photographers. Everything is an electronic gadget to them. Too many electronics engineers and marketing leeches. They will never be able to recapture the place they once held in consumers hearts. Apple and Samsung are much more coherent than them now. Sony is all about experimentation and less about coherent product strategy.

  73. 3000 bucks? even if this camera has a evf the price is too high.
I like the “embedded” systems in photography and most of the times they work well, but they also should have a reasonable price.
If Sony will introduce in the next six month an interchangable system with a full frame sensor would be a better choice

  74. Andrea you sell your Nex 7 ??
be careful with rumors !! you are going too fast !! 🙂
don’t follow Sony rythm with Nex cameras

  75. WOW! MY NEXT CAMERA! Now all of a sudden I lost all interest in the A900, GH3, X-E1… Full-frame, fast f/2 35mm macro lens, manual controls (aperture ring, exposure compensation…), tilt LCD, stereo, hot shoe, custom modes…

Would I prefer a different focal length (a 24 or 28mm, maybe a 50) or even a lens mount? Of course! But this is the camera that actually exists. And it’s going to be mine! Woohoo!

  76. Everyone keeps saying mirrorless cameras are supposed to be cheaper to make,
    WTF
There has to be more to this camera than what the picture shows.

    1. >Everyone keeps saying mirrorless cameras are supposed to be cheaper to make,

No, they’re not. A ton of R&D is going into these cameras, they’re going to be pricey.

      1. What R&D?
Panarama/Face Detection/HHT/HDR/MSNR/Smile Shutter/Clear Image Zoom already been done.
        PDAF on sensor…done
        No mirror No prism
Sensor is already on A99 VG900+ more will come
        RX100=$650 + $400 for FF sensor
        Zeiss 35 2.0 is $2000?
        Will it have…
        Global shutter?
        Curved sensor??
Its a $3000 Cyber-shot P&S with no viewfinder and probably fixed lcd that wont fit in your pocket.
4 Years ago the A850 was announced @$1999
        Nikon D600 is rumored @$1500
With all the R&D Sony has done in the last 4 years they have forgotten how to make a FF camera mirrorless or not that is less than $2800.
There had better be some secret voodoo inside to make it worth $3K

        1. I think this price is wierd to me too. if you get fuji XE-1 with the 23mm F1.4 that is in fuji lens road map. wouldn’t be as good or even better than this sony camera in terms of light gathering. and also willbe equal in depth of field because the fuji lens will be F1.4 for APS-C sensor compare F2.0 for a full frame. above all fuji has electronig VF that is same as the one in A99.

  77. Finally seeing the price of the new “Nex pro camera” 🙂 and the fact it as a fixed lens .. heu … oh damn I just bring up my meal !! buarp !!

  78. Admin, please add a “Not sure yet” option to polls like this.
To early to decide when we don’t know the spec. and other important info.
    Price also of course.

Interesting camera. This could be the digital version of
the typical 70’s/80’s-film cameras with fixed lens.
A good alround travel camera. For street shooters maybe?

But I believe the price have to be around $2000 to sell good.
Because of the rumors about both Canon and Nikon releasing “cheap”
FF cameras soon. No EVF? That would be missed, but maybe there is a
    EVF option to add.

  79. Everybody wants a FF interchangerable lens camera. What is the bloody point of making one with a fixed lense? I have never heard anyone ask for a fullframe camera with a fixed lense.

Its a bloody waste of the sensor in my opinion. Sony knows everyone has been asking for a FF Nex, yet they bring out this camera?

I hope they bring out a FF Nex but I begining to think they wont, even without native lenses as long as it is cheaper than Lieca’s models Sony stand to making a killing.

Alas they opted for this model.

  80. Where is that 3000$ price tag coming from? It doesn’t appear to be mentioned in the source link.
If this camera had an EVF and a 50mm fixed lens I’d be extremely interested in it even at 3000$. 35mm isn’t my cup of tea though, so no thanks.

BTW is there such a thing as corporate ADHS? I don’t feel as if Sony was very focused on where it wants to go.

  81. It looks absolutely perfect … looks, lens, pedigree … apart from two things; the price and the fixed lens!

$3000 is about twice what I would pay for it especially as the lens is fixed.

That said, I expect that loads of people will buy it when the price drops a bit and then when Sony introduce the interchangeable lens version the RX1 will be very readily available secondhand.

    1. Well since Sony charges over $1000 for the E-mount Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 Sonnar and this looks like a full frame equivalent of that lens + a full frame camera body and sensor I guess a price of $2500 to $3000 is to be expected.

      Still a D600 with a 35mm lens will cost a lot less

    2. I doubt it is fixed lens at this price. Why have that nice orange ring (same as the A99) if it wasn’t A-mount. I don’t care what Andrea says (Sorry Andrea :), that is an interchangeable lens and yes, the focus selector doubles as the lens release.

  82. OMG I NEED THAT CAMERA & the A99!!! Selling 850 gripped,rx100,35mm G now. Lol Nice job Sony, I knew you would come through!

  83. Admin

How can you say “The lens design may be based on the already existing Zeiss Biogon 35mm f/2.0 lens” when the lens clearly says “Sonnar”?

Biogon and Sonnar are two different animals.

  84. They appear to be milking for gear lust. If I was wealthy I would be tempted to buy this even though I may already have plenty of alternatives. They will probably have this out for around a year and then introduce a full frame interchangable nex, and the people who bought this will buy that camera too.

  85. Nice direction we are heading with this camera – big sensor and fast lens.

But .. why can these people not calibrate the lens and provide a manual focus scale with depth of field lines.

I’ve been using my GXR with a ZM 21/4,5 ( 32mm equiv ) for snapshots – the scale works really well as there is no need to raise the camera to change focus in a menu.
Other times it would be nice to have AF – almost there Sony but no biscuit yet.

  86. what gives?
sony could crush the life out of canikon with a FF NEX but instead come up with such a niche market thing..
    sony you are so pathetic!

    1. This is going to make the demand for a full frame mirrorless even stronger.

If I were Nikon (who don’t have a large sensor mirrorless) I would respond to this, the Canon mirrorless, Fuji X-Pro, NEX-7/6, OM-D etc. with a full frame digital Nikon SP.

  87. To me, it seems Sony is filling some time to show that they can do a full frame Nex and they are doing so by releasing this RX1. It’s the same thing Fuji did with their Xpro1, they released a fixed lens camera(x100) and see how people responds to it, at the time the x100 was released $1100 for a compact camera seems a bit steep but look at the sales figure, I hope Sony released this at half of the suggested price at $1500ish(and this will be a hot seller), 3000 is just way too overpriced. You can get a 5Dmkii and a 35mm f1.4. If Nikon can sell a d600 at around $1600 why can’t Sony sell a compact full frame at similar price? I just hope that the price that you are hearing is for the a99 and not for the RX1. Anyway, if we know a NEX full frame is coming, who is going to buy thing? Excuse my broken English. ;p

    1. Nikon D600 $1600 + Zeiss 35mm ZF.2 Distagon $1100 = $2700

That will give you an interchangeable lens mount and viewfinder as well as a Zeiss lens

The only clear advantage of this will be its compact size and maybe a higher resolution sensor

    2. Fel, because the Nikon D600 for $ 1600 will not include a small, autofocusing 35/2,0 Zeiss lens in a notably smaller and lighter combo, perhaps? 🙂
      .

      1. This seems sort of like a full frame Leica X2, with similar kind of pricing – only it says Sony and Zeiss instead of Leica. 😉

    1. Could maybe be a OVF option since the lens is fixed.
You really just need to frame. The rest you can see on the LCD.
OVF is the best when shooting in dim/low light.

      1. I disagree about the OVF and lowlight. I can see things with the LCD on my Sony LCD that I can’t see with my own eyes because it’s so dark. I use the camera as a nightscope to look around at night.

  88. Sony heard so many people wanting a small FF camera (me included..)…
Ok great, but they just made a small mistake, they put a fixed 35mm lens on it and no viewfinder for a bargain price of $3000 !??? So disappointed…

  89. “The lens design may be based on the alreayd existing Zeiss Biogon 35mm f/2.0 lens”…
How can the lens be based on the Zeiss Biogon when it is a SONNAR?!?!

    1. Sonnar lenses are zeiss products with fast aperture, it can be based from the biogon and they probably shared similar characteristics with the biogon but since sonnar term is more popular in Sony Alpha land, they might use it instead of biogon 😉

  90. Does anyone know what the button is to the right of the flash hump? On the a77 the flash button is close to where that button is. I wonder what it is…

  91. Filter thread is 49mm.
So this is a very small FF camera.
Just look at the hight of the camera body, not larger than the lens.
    Maybe around 60mm camera height?
I also guess for a OVF option, you really just need it for framing.

  92. Yeah, I think OVF will be one of the accessories Sony will announce with this camera, but man, I just can’t justify the 3000 dollar price the admin mention. FF sensor is definitely cheaper nowadays, and if canon can make a 300dollar interchangeable 35f2 lens, why couldn’t Sony make one as well. I seriously doubt this thing will be price that high. I am seriously considering getting this camera but with that price I might have to look somewhere else. (hint: a D600 with a 35mm F1.4 G lens) =)

  93. Is this the final image – or has it been doctored ?
Strange that there are no TTL ( let alone EVF ) contacts on the hot shoe.

  94. Great resolution at iso12800?
    OSS ?
    36mpix?
Never seen quality of the lens?

That would be my most important reasons to buy this cam.

  95. Looks beautiful and if money was no object….

However I will be waiting for a FF interchangable version (hopefully with NEX7 style controls (with mode dial) and top end EVF.

  96. Looks excellent; the 35mm fixed focal length is somehow liberating. No need to worry about which focal length to use, just about composition. Looks small and light – a camera to always have with you but with full frame image quality. If the lens is good and the price not too outrageous, I’m in.

  97. FFS, whatta stupid move!

They really can’t listen to what the people say, can’t they?

Eitherway, screw them. I will get much more IQ for much less money from the Sigma DP2M, when it arrives on the market.

  98. Certainly not a stupid move at all!

It is a very smart way to go around the problem of tryng to squeeze in FF-lensens in the NEX (or any other) mount. The main purpose of “mirror free” cameras is to be small and light. With a FF sensor the lenses will be considerably bulkier and heavier than the lenses for APS-C cameras as NEX, and tele- and zoomlenses would not be of much interest anyway.

This will by far be the smallest and lightest digital 1:2.0 FF kamera ever! 🙂
    .

  99. Do I want one? No. It’s not really something that would be of interest to me, at any price. However I’m sure there are a few people for whom this will be the perfect camera. I have to give Sony credit for producing such a unique product. I just wish they’d fill out their NEX lens lineup before moving on to these types of projects.

  100. Seems like fan-art, not a real thing.

Or it’s got an interchangable lens, on or the other.

If you read the text in the lens, you’ll notice theat all the letters go circular fashion to be best read if you rotate your head. On the other hand, if you look at the text in the RX100, you’ll notice how all the text is layed out to be easy to read without having to turn your head upside down.

Thus, either the lens is interchangeable, or this is a fake.

I’d say fake as the camera would be called NEX-something.

  101. Damn you….so close Sony, so close! Trying to protect A99 from cannibalizing? Why skip lens mount? Why do we have to wait eternally to get Leica competition at cheaper rate?
I am not sure about $3000 for this….too much me thinks. More like $2200 perhaps.

Also why the bronze/brown ring around the mount is similar to A99….? Is it really interchangeable? But I don’t see the lens release lever…

  102. Looks like a proof-of-the-principle type camera. It is released to show muscles, to get rave reviews and collect critics. Kind of public beta testing. CZ just promised new FF lenses for mirrorless but they are not ready yet, neither a new MILC is. Possibly new FF sensors need optimized lenses which don’t exist, hence a fixed lens solution for the time being. Also I cannot imagine this camera with an ugly LA-EA type adaptor and it’s a beauty as it is. I know it sounds like suicide for SONY but it is always a very tempting idea to burn old hardware and start from scratch. There is still A99 for A mount users after all.
    (Just smoking…)

  103. I love how all the haters and trolls have missed the biggest news. Full freaking frame in a compact! The only other option for FF smaller than an SLR is what, a $7,000 Leica? Add a few thousand on top of that for a comparable lens – oh wait, you can’t get AF on the Leica, whoops!

How about a kudos to Sony for once again pushing the innovation envelope?

    1. No but you can get more than one lens/focal length and viewfinder and this is what kills this camera for most people…….oh and the $3k too
Bring out a Nex9 + HQ EVF with NO native lenses and A-mount adapter for $2500 and it would sell more.

      1. Sure you can. But can you get a FF sensor in any other camera this size? Hell no. Thus you have a unique product with no competitor. Steep price and fixed lens be damned, I estimate this will sell extremely well.

I’m pre-ordered on the A99 so my money goes there first but if I was in the market, this camera would top my list.

  104. this is the real shit,
THE BODY LOOKS TINY, THE LENS is 49 filter diameter and looks huge, a true pocketable FULLFRAME CAMERA, I EXPECT A TRUE TELECENTRIC LENS DESIGN

    A DREAM COME TRUE

I BELIEVE THE SMALL SIZE IS ONLY POSSIBLE TO A CLEVER RETROFOCUS DESIGN, that WOULD EXPLAIN WHY IT’S A SONNAR DESIGN, AND NO BIOGON,

I SUSPECT M10 LEICA SENSOR AND THIS CAMERA WILL BE THE SAME

    I’LL BUY BOTH

    BEST DIGITAL CAMERA EVER

    1. Don’t forget..most are amateurs, not professional photographers. Some are, but mostly are just doing as a hobby or just “wanna be”.

    2. Don’t forget..most are amateurs, not professional photographers. Some are, but mostly are just doing as a hobby or just “wanna be”, or thought they are that good.

  105. If its true, its strangest thing I ever saw probably.

Otherwise, if it has regular shutter.. Im already seeing ppl hacking into it. 😀

  106. No EVF, really? Other than the full-frame sensor and the aperture ring, it would seem to me like the NEX-6 with 24mm Zeiss would out-class this in every way. I guess I’ll wait to pass judgement once we get some real info.

  107. It is again all about size.
The RX100 first, and now RX1.
The smallest digital FF camera ever?
Typically for Sony to make something small, just because they can.

  108. I was going to sell my a77 tomorrow, but now I don’t have to. What a relief! Thanks Sony!!

Will be waiting for NEX full-frame…

  109. What a shame! Full Frame YES, but fixed lens really blows it. I would have bought one the first day it was out if it had interchangeable lenses, and hopefully an EVF. Now I’ll just have to keep waiting.. Maybe the NEX Pro still has a chance of being announced.

    1. Only if you want to commit yourself to the torture of using the slow as molasses DP2M and their proprietary RAW management software and bloated file sizes. No thanks.

  110. Given what Sony did with the RX100, I am expecting an impressive camera with exceptional image quality. Sure, I’d hoped for that FF Nex but this seems to indicate that will likely be coming. A $3000 price is too much for many of us but I’d preorder at $1500.

  111. My extreme excitement turned to extreme disappointment. Why doesn’t it have a EVF? If this had a viewfinder (of any sort really) I would have dropped $3k on it if the lens was good.

    1. Hmmm, I wans’t right. I mean yes, there is a FF NEX camcorder. But the RX1 has a fixed lens. It is not a NEX. It looks like Sony is doing everything but not exactly that what I want 🙂

          1. Great point. The R line is tiny though and the current members, the R1 and RX100 have nothing in common other than breakthrough sensors at time of release. The R1 was CMOS, the RX100 1 inch (in a fixed lens format). If we allow that ILC’s are reasonably new to digital outside the DSLR format could we hope that R is more ‘Radical’ than anything and thus any flagship non-DSLR would fit?

All that said – the fact that this tiny size likely needs custom micro-lenses means I know I’m wrong. I just want this to be something it can’t be yet.

    1. Looks like it has AF, servo/continuous, DMF and manual focus easily selected by the switch lower right on the front of the body; lower left front from the user perspective.

  112. It’s that the “game changer” ? An overpriced fixed lenses neo-retro design camera ? I guess image quality will be very good, zeiss brand lenses + sony sensor makes a nice combo but apart for some whealthy people, who will buy this camera ? Film nostalgic won’t go to a camera without OVF/EVF and it’s not retro-look enough, there is no scale distance, no direct speed dial.

    1. +1

One question this will help answer, given Sony’s love affair with tiny cameras: how small can a FF mirrorless get?

      1. +1 35 is too wide for me for the most part. I had the Zeiss 24 for NEX, but I find the Sigma 30 more useful. I suppose it could be useful for wedding photographers in some situations, especially if it’s silent.

    2. If Sony could implement the digital zoom feature on this camera, then we might have the 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm view angles… It’s just like having 3 prime lenses on one camera. Continue dreaming…

    1. Me either. Sometimes you can’t help but wonder how out of touch some of the top marketing guys are with what most consumers need and want. I think this will be a no-go for most except a tiny few with money to burn.

  113. Problem here is that the initial rumour of a full frame nex was what everyone is wanting so the real excitement of an interesting new product has been lost. Can’t wait for this.

  114. NO WAY Sony can sell interchangeable full size now.

If this is the interchangeable FF camera, it certainly should have been a game changer, but it it would have killed most of NEX /a99 sales.

  115. If you’re trying to take some of the market away from Leica with a compact FF camera, it seems like a no brainer to make it with interchangable lenses to allow Leica M glass on here via an adaptor – if they can spend $5k on a lens they won’t think twice about $2-3k for a second, full frame body.

All in all though looks like a nice camera from Sony

  116. What a dumb strategy..they should have released full frame nex instead of RX1..dont know what they’re thinking..but I dont think it will sell..and..i love NEX design much more..

  117. A FF version of the RX100! This will have IQ that will blow away all the existing FF cameras and its size is tiny in comparison. Great to see someone going FF mirrorless. No builtin EVF, too pricey, and a fixed lens and LCD. OK, but this is the first of its kind. There should be no doubt that other interchangeable lens cameras like this will follow. The writing is on the wall for FF DSLRs.

Just like the first NEX cameras are for APS-C sized MILCs, this will spearhead another exciting development. FF MILCs from Fuji, Pentax, Samsung, etc. Canon and Nikon can stay on the sidelines and I wish they do so that the others can have more headstart and become more competitive, so as to break the duopoly. What a great day!

  118. They don’t make lens sales money off people adapting other brand lenses to NEX. Not surprising that they will evolve away from people doing that. In this case they make the money off the lens, no choice. Typical Sony.

Also typical in that they think all anybody wants is a fixed lens consumer camera. Folks claiming so much value for the RX100 have shot themselves in the foot!

    1. but what if the image quality is twice as good as anything out there in 35mm focal range for that price of $2,800? would you buy it? why not if you will mainly shoot in 35mm? what if the image quality surpassess leica m9 + 35mm which will cost 4x as much?

    2. Trip trap trip trap. Don’t you think folks can see through your anti-Sony bitterness? You’re no better than the typical canikon troll. And all because Sony wouldn’t give you an OVF replacement for your A700. A child throwing toys out of his pram is nothing compared to your behaviour.

  119. I wonder how many people sold their NEX-7’s in anticipation for a FF NEX because of the rumor? If they’re disappointed in this release, I’m sure they’re crushed finding out it’s not a NEX (after they sold their bodies). OUCH!

    1. I was one of them about to sell the NEX-7 for exactly that reason, and, in fact, currently have it on Yahoo Japan auction. But, luckily with 2 days remaining on the auction, I am seriously thinking now to close the auction early and keep the NEX-7. The fact that the NEX-6 will soon be announced and has EVF, I may get that as a 2nd body to avoid lens swap.

  120. Has anyone in here looked at the RX100? It is sweet. It feels good and shoots good. This will be a great camera for Sony. It will bring in the Fuji X-Pro1/ wannabe Leica shooters to Sony. It legitimizes Sony. This is for real; it is no toy.

  121. Very nice to see somone headed in the right direction but there is NO WAY I can spend that much on a fixed lens camera. This apeears intended as an ‘interchangeable camera’ to compliment your primary camera. I would be very happy and much more confident to have this in my bag at a wedding as a backup…. if I did weddings.

  122. Oh..no! This look like a shot in the foot. 🙁 For those who were waiting for a full frame NEX camera.

The good thing for me I can wait for a FF NEX next year I cannot afford one at the moment. 🙂

  123. Yes, and to add to that, look at cell phones. We used to be able to grab it securely, today we need rubber to keep it from slipping from our hands. It’s a shame the human hand have not aquired the capability to collpase within the past 30 years, because manual focusing a thin lens is not as pleasant as one the size of our out dated hands.

  124. It proves that Sony is more like a high tech company than a camera maker. High tech companies like to change user behavior. It’s like Sony telling us “Hey guys, shoot it like a i-phone, it’s cool!”. When I have a iphone, I shoot it with a iphone. When I have a camera, I shoot it with a camera, a camera with a viewfinder, period.

  125. Uhhhg they made the aperture ring backwards. Minolta MD rings have wide aperture far left. So do Contax, Leica, Oly PEN… Even Maxxum lenses with manual adapters for NEX have wide aperture at FAR LEFT!

Damnit Sony pay attention to your legacy and keep things consistent.

And where the hail is the front mounted PC port on the a99??? Side mounted PC ports KILL cables in vertical shooting. Put it back where it belongs on the FRONT! I’m sorry your super secret Nat Geo Togs didn’t tell you that. Perhaps you should speak with those who’ve shot Maxxum for 25 years. We don’t like these thoughtless changes that make things worse. Side mounted PC port is for your convenience… not ours.

  126. The Aperture ring is correct for a Zeiss Sonnar, same as on my 1934 5cm F1.5 Sonnar. Zeiss at least paid attention to that.

  127. You guys are camera addicts. This is unique, high quality gear, full frame and quite handsome, and for only a few of us. If Sony can deliver on RX100’s 20 MP sensor, then it will deliver on a FF 24MP sensor for sure. Price seems justified, who cares if you will buy it or not? But what is the point of complaining? Because the rumor mill spoke of game changer, as if it were a claim by Sony? Sony is issuing a couple of products for a couple of target groups. Be happy.
I also don t get the FF NEX hype, it will make the NEX bigger (at least its FF lenses).

  128. Smart move from Sony, seeing there is a overwhelm demand on NEX FF. They’ve made one with non-detachable FF compact, simply because first there is no exiting FF NEX lens (not until they release the lens and body at the same time), secondly they’ve seen the success of Fujifilm X100. However I think the price is little too much for a FF compact. 2k should be best price range for this camera. I like the 35mm F2 Zeiss..Can’t wait to see the quality. For me 35mm is pefect for FF compact. Really good for street photo. As for the sensor. I hope its an improved version of the 24mpx or even better if they can lower it to 16 to 18mpx but improve the ISO.

  129. admin gots it wrong!! admin said to sell off to ebay all u nex7 for this! this is not no game changer! it couldve easily been the game changer if in e-mount with m-mount adapter. couldve but couldnt.

      1. hmmm… high quality lens lasts forever. camera body lasts 2-3 yrs.

lens on camera body = hammer and screwdriver to salvage high quality parts?

  130. At first I saw an orange mount on the body like the a99, I thought holy cow, is it a-mount compact body? Lets see guys, this baby might turn out as an a mount changeable body on sept 12.

  131. Haha Ohh admin this time you are so wrong..this really surprises everyone. Luckily I didnt follow your advice to sell of my new nex7 for this. This really has nothing to do with Nex. Anyway good job in updating us all the latest news. I still waiting for the 3 new nex lenses. Hope these lens wont be disappointing.

  132. Guys… just chill ok . its a freaking rumor site ! Admin as already provided a good overall coverage. Whether this camera suite you or not just move on…

    +1

  133. So, there WILL be a Zeiss Sonnar 35 f/2 after all? I mean, no way they developed this lens for this camera only.
    Alpha mount please, no NEX!

  134. Hi would you mind letting me know which web host you’re working with? I’ve loaded your
blog in 3 completely different browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker
then most. Can you suggest a good internet hosting provider at a fair
    price? Cheers, I appreciate it!

  135. totally nonsense for me is spending 3000$ on a fixed lens FF camera. If it were NEX like, I’d jump on it right now.

  136. This is so frustrating. Why would they release a full-frame, compact body in a fixed lens system, before releasing it in the ILC system. They are really attracting the interest of the pro-photographer community with the NEX 7. This is a disappointing move.

  137. I’m sure that this camera will deliver phenomenal images, but I have to ask even if I risk getting flamed: What is the point? Is this camera really going to be so much better than a camera with an APS-C, 1.5″ or even 1″ sensor? I would understand it if we could interchange sensors like we swapped films the olden days.

But why stick with it in a fixed lens camera? Because of tradition that some guy decided to make a use of cheap movie film over 100 years ago?

I would understand if it came with a M mount. Heck, I would have been intrigued if Sony put a S2-sized sensor in there, just to “break the mold”. But I guess they wanted to capture a part of the rich hipsters market.

P.S. Or maybe Sony is testing the waters for a FF NEX system?

    1. It is what it is because it is an R or RX series. To become qualified as one, it has to be:
-small as possible (no vf, fixed screen, fixed lens)
-expensive. you have to pay more for a smaller package you know… 😛

I can speculate that FF Nex is coming… SR1.

  138. Umm. That lens seems anything but compact to me. If the body is the size of the GX1, then this camera is definitely not pocketable (okay, maybe in a large jacket). But still, full frame with a 2.0 lens in a package smaller than any full frame DSLR currently available? Hmmmmmmmm…

Nah. I’d rather buy another film M instead, at that price. If it were priced at $2,000 then it might just be tempting…

  139. I’m sure there’s a niche market for this with people who will find it’s combination of size and quality images exactly what they want.

But it’s not for me; 35mm would not be my personal choice of focal length and f2 seems too slow for how I’d choose to use it too. (and slower than a lot of competing lenses too; although undoubtable it would have had to be bigger to have been faster)

And assuming that the lens accounts for a large chunk of the price, why would I invest that much into a lens with such a limited lifespan; that is integrated into this one particular camera, which is bound to be superceeded within a few years at maximum.

  140. I prefer 40 mm or 50 mm in a fixed lense like in an analog MF Format

Rangefinder Plaubel Makina67 , better for shooting portraits, people and I prefer the famous HCB look:-) of the 50 mm lense.

I would buy one straight with a 50 on it. love leaf shutter option for artist stuff in combination with fill in flash outside. its like MF in a small body.

But 35 mm is to wide for fashion, portraits and for my style of work.

interchangable lenses okay I would in the boat without to think twice!!!
would be my dream camera like a contax G2 Film System. Perhaps next year:-)
