(SR3) Sony announcement party on August 28th??? Follow SonyAlphaRumors!

This rumor still hasn’t been confirmed by trusted sources but according to two anonymous messages I got the last 48hours the big Sony DDAY announcement is scheduled for August 28th! I hope trusted sources can confirm this within the next hours so that I can upgrade the rumor from SR3 to SR5. I am also not sure if this announcement is just for NEX or for NEX and the A99!

I also have been told that we should expect major leaks the days before the announcement. For now we know the A99 (with new flash and vertical grip and more), NEX-5R, NEX-6 are coming. On the lens front we could see a new 70-200mm, 300mm A mount lens (and maybe a 50mm prime) and on the NEX front I am sure we will have the new 11-18 and 16-50mm pancake(!) zooms and a new 35mm f/1.8 prime lens. I will write an exact roundup of all camera, lens accessories and features next week. Let’s hope Sony models will be as successful as the [shoplink 13014]Sony RX100[/shoplink] (on top of the rankings at Amazon US).

This means that you guys can’t afford to miss a single day on SonyAlphaRumors! And be sure to be online here on August 28th at between 5 and 7 am London time to follow the announcement live on SAR! Follow SAR RSS feed or follow me on Twitter and join the super friendly Facebook comunity! Share the news on your blog and your Sony (and Nikon LOL) community.

  1. Done… gave you your 6000 FB like. 🙂

Looking forward to checking SAR everyday for the next couple of weeks.

  2. My hopes are for the new 50mm Zeiss and the replacement 70-400
    Both are on my short-list!
And if the a99 looks good, then I’ll buy the new lenses and plan on the 2013 camera to replace my a850’s

If all if this happens………….I’m will be in love with Sony and my then become a fanboi 😉

  3. will buy A99, 70-200 f2.8G, Zeiss 50 f1.2 & SEL 16-50mm (?2.8) {definitely will not be a pancake tho}
May even sell my feature deplete (with reference to newer models) NEX7 and pick up a NEX6/5R.
    Am checking SAR hourly!!

  4. I said it in the D600 thread, for Sony to make a splash with its DLSR’s it needs to beat Nikon (D600) and Canon (rumored “budget” FF, 6d??) to the punch or the A99 will get buried in a sea of CaNikon hype, leaving it DOA. Smart move – IF – its true. And that’s a big if given Sony’s recent struggles with its pro DSLR’s. I’m watching the A99 closely as it might become the compliment camera to my FS100 and Nex5n. I wish Sony would update VG video camera as well as its getting lost in the endless Nex camera body updates.

    1. You won’t be able to buy the Zeiss 1.2 because it isn’t coming. The Zeiss 50mm will be 1.4. Making it 1.2 would compromise quality, raise the weight and treble the price – not to mention produce a wafer thin field of focus on full-frame. It isn’t happening.

    2. D600 will be competitive for sure.
I’m not so sure about the Canon, it will look very strange if a lo-cost gets announced (and maybe even materializes) while the 1Dx continues to be waporware.
People will start asking why Pro’s aren’t taken care of, and why all development resources have been spent on this camera instead.
So the Canon offer probably needs to wait until the 1Dx is out.
Next question is then what sensor to reuse again, and how that affects camera sales on cameras with the same sensor.

  5. I am truly suprised we haven’t heard about a new 35 f1.4 or f2. The 35G scores embarrassingly and is a staple lens in any system. The 70-200 and 50 are still fine lenses and test well, so why is
are we getting refreshes of some lensesu

Weak or non-existent but important lenses:
    17-35 f4 zeiss or sony
    35 f1.4-f2 g/zeiss
    70-200 f4 g/sony
    50 1.8 Sony
    85 1.8 sony
24-85/24-120 zeiss or sony (just need high quality)

Serious but a little more upscale
    21 f2.8 zeiss
    28 f2 “Hollywood” zeiss
    200 2.8 Minolta
    a-mount nex, aspc

Lens that would makes a-mount badass:
    50 makro plannar zeiss
    100 makro plannar zeiss
    Zeiss 55/50 1.2
    Also, an a-mount nex ff

Shooters would flick with this line up so much more than new video features…it’s really too bad Sony doesn’t take advantage of the zeiss legacy–it anchors them with quality optics among old and new shooters.

    1. Would also add 28-300/5.6 for a one shot full frame walkabout. Nikon do this and could be very attractive on the D600

    1. Aha, so that’s why Sony is so slow with lenses – they give us time to save. How thoughtful. 😉

BTW – what is a pancake(!) zoom. Does (!) indicate it comes with a topping ? Maple syrup ? Fried Banana ?

Any news on those waffle lenses ? I’m a bit tired of pancakes tbh.

  6. Is Sony so stupid that they wouldn’t announce at Photokina.. but right after?

It runs Tuesday, September 18 to Sunday, September 23, 2012

    1. No, the Sony people are not that stupid. This rumoured announcement will happen (if true) THIS month – before Photokina. 🙂

    2. I might be wrong, but I think that in the standard calendar the 28th of August comes before 18th-23rd of September… 😀

  7. Back on march 7, we read here about a new announcement strategy from Sony whereby they would not announce multiple new ‘big’ products all at the same time. (just in case some products didn’t quite get the attention they might otherwise deserve)

Since then, Sony has indeed seemed to split up it’s big new product announcements, so presumably we will see at one major new product on the 28th. I’m still keen to know what it is though…

  8. What about FF EVIL, however it would be called?

I thought for a second about A99, idea is nice, but I need very good 35 1.4 lens to attach to it, I do not need mirror increasing bode size and weight. Lens must be very good wide open.
(if I would need it very good stopped down – I would not buy FF)

All reviews of Sony lens tell I can not find good lens to attach it to A99…

I would prefer to get FF NEX and attach to it CV 35 1.2 or Leica 35 1.4 Summilux.
    When? When? When?

  9. Maybe sony will also announce the rumored and along awaited NEX 7 firmware upgrade. Just a wish. Or maybe we should sell the NEX 7 for the NEX 6?

  10. I don’t claim to know much about how the camera industry markets its products but it’s not uncommon to preannounce something to help build interest before a trade show.
Sony what’s to drive people to its booth and month or so before a show is a good time to start generating buzz.
I would not be surprised for Sony to show a little leg with a clear plastic a99 mockup and tease with some new Zeiss lenses.

  11. The A99 has been rumored about for longer than any camera I can think of. Just release the damn thing already.

  12. “I also have been told that we should expect major leaks the days before the announcement.”

    Pre-announced “leaks” now?

Can there be any less doubt that these “leaks” and “rumors” are deliberate PR moves by Sony, either trying to gauge interest in potential products or to stoke interest in those about to be released?

  13. sony camera announcement on 2012 Aug30th announcement = 2013 January Delivery = Summer 2013 1st Fireware Fix attempts.

This thing will not even begin to deliver results till next summer.

  14. Sony needs to do it TRULY RIGHT. A77 was DOA: very poor samples, many bugs, very disappointing ISO performance, limited video functionality, tiny buffer size, EVF issues… 1 year later they’ve abandoned A77 firmware updates! Only 1 year later, despite the many bugs still present!

Sony NEEDS to do it TRULY RIGHT with the A99, or SLT will be dead. They haven’t a second chance. Do it wrong and…Cybershots will be the next flagship cameras.

  15. I for one am very excited to see if Sony will finally give full frame shooters the updated equipment they need. I liked the a900, but my D7000 has better low light performance (or close to it). I’m hoping the a99 is a far more streamlined machine than the clunky a900. I don’t need d3s performance, all I ask for is usuable ISO 6400, better bracketing, etc. Love the zeiss lenses, and nothing can match their look

  16. I hope they deliver the long long awaited A77 firmware upgrade that include a top JPEG engine like in the A57

  17. people who are going to buy the A99 will fall into 1 of few different categories
    1. those that want the ultimate stills/video camera (me).
    2. those that want the razor thin DOF and FOV a FF offers
    3. and people that love to shoot in low light
I think the true “pros” would already be so heavily invested in their glass that it would be near impossible/costly for them to change mount systems, so therefore the bulk of their potential customer base would be newcomers to DSLR or people with “small” lens investments. Either way the pros will be watching this space but would not initially contribute greatly to the purchasing demographic IMHO.

    1. If you see it a system swap, yes. But there must be some that just want the best tool fo the job, and if that means they need to buy a hammer besides the screwdriver, then so be it.

Look at it this way: If you are in for a 500/4, then the price of the rear lens cap may not be the most important thing in the world.

      1. sure and thats what i mean by “small” investment. But if you had say 6 expensive lenses, flashes, batteries and other accessories then the thought of a system swap is daunting, trust me i’ve done it and it hurts.
