Guys I don’t know what to think about this. While the source of the info usually posted good info I think there may be some mistake here. So I don’t know how to rate it. The source posted this on an Asian forum called Sonysdf (Translation here).
The source claims that unlike my previous rumors the 16-50mm has a constant f/2.8 aperture! P.S.: I would be happy to see he is right! That is my main doubt on the list you see below. The list includes E and A mount lenses:
E16-50 F2.8 OSS
E35/1.8
E11-18 F3.5-4.5
A50/1.4 SAM with all time manual focus
A50/1.2 ZA Planar SSM
A70-400 GII
If that is true than it sounds sooooo good 🙂

Boom! first comment!. Also, yes, if it is 2.8 constant it would be good but seeing that it will be a collapsible design, I seriously doubt it.
However, this source also told us that all those E mount lens are is not pancake.
believed it?
It would be a complete miracle if it even starts at f2.8…
The source said “none of the above E lenses are pancake” when he refers to the six lenses listed above.
He also said:
“2. A77 will have new firmware but he doesn’t know the timing.
3. A99 will use iISO but with have additional mount point for the future GN 60 flash
All the above info are very different from SAR rumors”
would be insanely cool, but: seeing the 16-50 2.8 Alpha lens and its size which is APS-C only, i highly doubt its going to happen.
But, alpha lens is a design for SLR, so there is a chance even if this would be a 2.8 constant, that it would be somewhat smaller.
That being said, I still think that the lens will not be 2.8 constant because of the factor that it is a collapsible design (like the Panasonic)
A 16-50/2.8 G pancake lens. Alright!! ⌐.⌐
…you forgot to mention OSS is also included with this super-fast-pancake!
This will definitely stop the we-need-lenses-whining to start complaints like I-can’t-afford-it…
make it plastic!!! cuts the price in half
make it pinhole … don’t even have to pay for lens 😀
Oh no, please no more “first” “second” and so on posts…
Constant 2.8 would be great, though I am more interested in the Zeiss 50mm…
Sounds too good to be true, so I am not keeping my hopes up.
Why not? The SAL1650 is F2.8 too, so Sony may have been able to re-use some of that lens’ formula.
Why not? It’s called physics.
Why not? If they do something with microlenses alignment or something else that solves color shifting/smearing edge issue in their new 5R and 6, then they can use simple symmetric design for the lens: forget about SLR/SLT with their stupid mirrors. Although I rather think this source is wrong, it will be 16-50/3.5-5.6 as was told before. But this can be true: as it was told, 11-18/4 expected to be pancake zoom. This means it has nearly symmetric design.
Ok, enlighten us then. If you use the word physics, you should also be able to explain the actual laws of physics that make a 16-50/2.8 lens impossible.
+1000
Well!! We’re waiting…
It’s possible to make an ultra-compact retractable-type zoom lens with oss but it has to be slow (small aperture) or it won’t be compact. It is impossible to make a 16-50 constant f/2.8 oss aps-c lens even remotely compact. Even a basic understanding of lens design (elements/groups/diameters) should tell you this, or you could just look at other modern lenses like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC.
There’s simply no way to get more light through a piece of glass without making that piece of glass larger. If you doubt this, draw a curtain across a window. This becomes more relevant the wider the angle of received light you want to transmit. It should be as obvious as saying water is wet. Demanding an explanation demonstrates a lack of education. Why not educate yourself about refraction and lens design ? It’s all available on the internet.
Sony already displayed a mock-up of the 11-18 a year or so ago and if iirc it looked slightly larger than the 18-55.
Apologies for the above – I thought someone was claiming an aps-c 16-50 f/2.8 oss would be a compact lens.
Your “education” is limited at looking at that Tamron lenses, and you have never designed anything.
Which is the minimum diameter for lens element allowable by physics?
The answer is easy: 50/2.8 = 17 mm
Larger glasses are needed to make clearance for mirror, and improve image quality.
Re-think that for an aps-c image circle, a 3x zoom with oss and an 85 degree view, and tell us the number of elements, groups and diameters for YOUR design. Or just look up a patent, which is what I’ve done.
I really don’t care too much about been collapsible, but e mount constant f2.8 zoom lens with OSS will be my 95% camera lens.
The 11-18 looks promising too!
Ditto this. Even if it’s bigger than the SEL50F18, just as long as its smaller than the SEL18200LE.
While I’m daydreaming, if it can take the FCL-ECU1/ECF1… then I will bounce around in my cube until I swoon with overheated excitement.
So possible, yes. collapsible, no. Why not do both? Replace the kit zoom with a collapsible variety and make the f2.8 the $$$ G option.
A lot of people would then say “Gosh, Sony, why so much $$$? The main appeal of NEX is it’s price..blah blah blah..I would prefer a 3.5-5.6 that I can buy because I am not so serious (tears of frustration coming down) meh meh meh meh”
I am with you, however. I wish Sony would grab it by the balls and go BOOM! 2.8 constant great performance with excellent centre to borders…BOOM! $1K!
I read Chinese and they said there is not a single lenses in the list that is a pancake.
This sucks as I really want a 11-18 pancake…
How many dozen more 16-50’s is Sony going to produce before they realize there is a whole lot more to photography that that very limited focal range.
Electrons are cheap, one does not have to stuff everything into one photo with a wide angle lens. Is it that folks don’t know how to pick out a subject to focus on? So shoot it all at once and maybe somewhere in there is the composition?
Firstly, a 16-50 covers range from wide angle to medium tele, and is certainly not so limited like a prime lens.
Secondly, There are other lenses if you don’t want such a limited focal range, like the 18-200 and 55-200, but I guess you aim for a lens like 16-80 or 16-105.
and then u cry 4 fo fast pancakes
don’t feed the troll
First of all – his not a troll.
Secondly – he is right. E mount needs some variation in lenses, at least to include the holy trinity of primes. Yes, they can be f/1.8, but… let them be there!
I so want a 16-80 f/3.5-4.5 oss. I’m hoping this will be the G lens on the roadmap, coming in 2013.
Stating obvious doesn’t prevent him from being a troll
Booe – you sure that saying anything doesn’t prevent people from being trolls? 😉 I’d avoid calling people trolls just because I disagree.
To begin with, Walter Knapp didn’t state a point which could be argued pro or contra. He effectively said
“I am a serious photog. Sony makes crap for morons”
What makes you think I disagree with him?
“How many dozen more 16-50′s is Sony going to produce before they realize there is a whole lot more to photography that that very limited focal range.”
Yes Walt – because Sony only produces lenses in that range. You are one very strange character.
OMG, that lens (16-50 f2.8) would be amazing, especially with OSS, who cares about “collapsibility”. A similar lens from Leica/Panasonic has just come to market for the micro four thirds (MFT) system and it’s not small or cheap ($1000), but on an APS-C sensor would kick its ass. I reckon the “collapsable” lens will be another one, no way could it be this, but again so what!! Similar lens for the Alpha A mount is very chunky so on the E mount it will be smaller but not by much.
16-50/2.8 for E-mount would be about as half weight of 16-50/2.8 for A-mount, much smaller
Doubt it. The Alpha 16-50/2.8 doesn’t have OSS, but the E 16-50/2.8 would (well, I hope so). Also, the E 50/1.8 isn’t that much smaller/lighter than the Alpha 50/1.8.
But, we’ll see how small/light Sony can make the E 16-50/2.8.
A-mount 50/1.8 is small because its focal length is near its flange distance. But 16-50 has to be large because widest focal length is very small compared to allowable backfocus.
“A-mount 50/1.8 is small because its focal length is near its flange distance.”
My point exactly as 16-50mm covers that focal length. Longer focal lengths have less chances of getting smaller/lighter on mirrorless and we see this with not just the 50/1.8, but also the 18-55mm and 55-210mm. Anyway, not saying that the e 16-50mm won’t be smaller. Short flange distance does allow for simpler/smaller wide angle lens design, e.g. non-retrofocal. Also, other manufacturers have made smaller/lighter mirrorless lenses with long(-ish) focal lengths, e.g. Olympus 4/3 50/2 vs Olympus m4/3 45/1.8.
I think it’ll be little bit smaller, but not too much. It’ll still be a largest standard zoom lens of all by a large margin.
Take any fullframe 24-70/2.8 and downscale it 1.5 times. Note that you cannot do this for A-mount aps-c, because mirror is disproportionally large.
Also note that Fuji X 2.8-4 zoom is barely heavier than 300 grams.
“Take any fullframe 24-70/2.8 and downscale it 1.5 times” – it doesn’t work that way. FF 24-70 needs to have design that incorporates mirror chamber. NEX 16-50 doesn’t need that making overall construction simpler. But still this focal length with aperture force a large diameter of entrance pupil – you can’t cheat physics. Light needs to be gathered to get f/2.8 all across the range.
It *WILL* work. Any SLR lens design can be adapted to mirrorless with the worst expense or making lens barell longer.
(Downscaling won’t work for SLR FF -> crop DSLR)
If you insist NEX version should be even simpler, then it’s would be even lighter that downscaled FF lens… How would that be?
Sony 24-70mm F2.8 is 111 mm long and weights 955 g.
Downscaling 1.5 times: 111/1.5 = 74 mm and 955 / 1.5^3 = 283 g
Aforementioned extra barell length = 44.5/1.5 – 18 = 11.7 mm
74 + 11.7 = 87 mm long, 283 g weight. ONLY SLIGHTLY LARGER than E-mount kit zoom, without inventing anything. But you said design could be made simpler? Fine. It could be reworked and made even smaller.
Unlike you, I do know physics and what entrance pupil is.
The E35f1.8 is a logical (although a little late) step in the lineup, as were all the other lenses. The E16-50f2.8 isn’t a strange move of course, since many people walk around with 18-200s which size and weight will be approximately the same as a 16-50f2.8.
This one deserves a SR(-1)^(1/2)
:D, nice!
sri? Why? too imaginary?
I can read chinese. The rumor is saying that none of the E-mount lens above is pancake. Second, A77 will get new firmware but unsure on when will it be. Third, A99 is still using the minolta hotsoe but with more contact points for the future 60flash. BTW this source have posted quite a lot correct rumors before.
All I can say is that if the rumor is true, I’m buying one.
The Alpha DT version is already huge, and it does not have stabilization. So yeah, not as a pancake.
IF there is a pancake zoom and a G zoom, the G zoom can have constant 2.8. but the pancake will be 3.5-5.6 or 4-5.6 or something like that.
E16-50 F2.8 OSS > i doubt it.. if true this will be large not pancake.. but i dont care as long this lens give good image quality
E35/1.8 > waiting for it 😀
E11-18 F3.5-4.5 > this home run i really want it!! 😀 constant aperture f/4 would be nice 😀
A50/1.4 SAM > with all time manual focus > i hope this lens have a good image quality than before..
A50/1.2 ZA Planar SSM > home run again for alpha mount 😀 really exited about this 😀
hope sony make zeiss 100mm/2 macro and zeiss 28mm/1.8 or zeiss 35mm/1.4
I am with you on these. I would pay $350 for the 35mm, $1,000 for the 16-50 if it’s good and 2.8 constant (still in line with other 24-70 equiv lenses from Canon/Nikon/Zeiss in price if not a bit cheaper) and $600 for the 11-18 if it has f4 constant and it is also optically excellent.
Fuck collapsibility if it compromises the borders!
Who’s with me?
I am!
🙂
Yes, quality vs trendy….quality!
@50 f/1.4 SAM – If it’s as good as all the recent SAM lenses in their respective classes – I think we all will be happy 🙂 Plus – this new SAM engine behaves almost like SSM! Which makes me even more happy, cause I seriously hated the old version and considered using it instead of screwdrive motor as a mistake making the costs go needlessly higher. New one, the one in 18-135mm SAM is a completely different story 🙂
Sadly, the source says there is no pancake in that list…
E16-50 F2.8 OSS would be bliss.
I personally hope that the 16-50 is constant 2.8. I’d be more tempted by the NEX system with a bright, high quality standard zoom as an option. I don’t care about pancakes except for the ones I eat. 😉
The forum mentioned that these E-mounts are not pankcake glass, more of reason to doubt the validity of the 16-50mm f2.8 OSS (But we always can dream about it)
E35mm f/1.8 *faints*
50mm F1.2 ZA Planar SSM is the only lens that sounds appealing…
I wouldn’t be so extreme, but of course yes, it’s the most exciting of the bunch. 🙂
With an exciting price to match, no doubt!
Oh that’s true. I actually think that a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 SSM would be more than enough for all needs. Cheaper and lighter.
Is that physically possible?
fast 35? omg, my heart, it melts
I’m very much up to buy 50/1.2 ZA Planar SSM and would look at 70-400 GII also. My plan has been and still is to replace my old Minolta 50 1.4 and 70-400.Then replace my a850’s with the 2013 full frame.
I was just about to buy the current 70-400 but for the rumor that it would be replaced with a lens that’s not a funny silver color.
Wow only f2.8 and OSS?? With pancake we should have at least constant f1.8 and OSS and should be very compact
please tell me you are joking, because an OSS 16-50 “1.8” pancake is, as far as i know, almost impossible. Just imagine somthing like the 16-50 2.8, which is huge, and then try to make it a constant 1.8, add OSS and then try to put that in a pancake. even if it was possible, carrying a 4< pounds lens with you on a nex doesn't make sense, but we can keep on dreaming.
however i have to agree, that would be awesome 😉
16-50 F/2.8? Then it’s not a pancake lens. That’s it.
I wish Sony had a reasonably priced 35mm equivalent. The Zeiss is out of reach for most Nex owners- and 35mm is one of the most common focal lengths. Anyway, these are some useful lenses. The Nex lens lineup is finally beginning to shape up.
haha, what a load, Sony can barely make a fast pancake PRIME, the chance of them making a constant aperture pancake zoom just doesn’t exist.
I’d be surprised if even with a changing aperture they managed to make a real pancake.
only your momma can make a real pancake 😀
Is the 50/1.4 SAM just a repackaging of current original version… ? Like the 28-75 repackage?
Was really hoping to see a ZA/SSM version of the new 15/2.8 ZF/ZE… That would really round out the prime set, and pave the way for a TS series.
_______
Now where’s my 40-110mm f/2.0 Portrait Slayer?… with matching 1.5x for 60-165mm f2.8?
Really excited about the 50 1.2, however i miss something like a weathersealed 70-200 2.8 II , because i’d like to have weathersealed lenses for fullframe, that do not cost over 8000 bucks (300 2.8).
And having several weathersealed cameras in their lineup, sony should really care about weathersealed lenses, because WS-camera and non-WS-lens, doesn’t make too much sense, atleast in my eyes.
Please correct me if i’m wrong, but I think there are only 3 weathersealed a-lenses out there the 16-50 2.8 (DT), the 300 2.8 G and the 500 2.8 G.
How likelyisnthe zeiss 50 being f/1.2? Isn’t the only 1.2 they ever did the insane 85 mm anniversay? Besides I’ve shot a lot with the Canon 50 1.2 and even the af n 5d mkIII can’t move that glass fast enough so it’s actually something of a double edged sword…
Frankly, I would be thrilled with the announcement of *ANY* Full Frame lens. If it were a 40 mm f/8 lens with manual aperture and no exif, it would be better than what we’ve gotten lately, which is really nothing.
Another kit or DT lens? Not interested.
Sony are announcing new lenses alongside appropriate bodies. With each body they have announced they have announced a new lens for that catagory or class of camera. The full frame lenses will get announced next to a new full frame camera, simple as that really.
– 16-50
– f2.8
– OSS
– Pancake
You can choose any two.
Just two?
In one line 16-50 f2.8.
The new Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 with OIS, is a great example of a fast zoom for the Nex, Panasonic will gonna launch a 35-100mm f2.8 too, so come on Sony, unleash the Kraken…. 😉
16-50mm 2.8
how about a pancake oss??? how stupid is that question^^ ?
why do you have to piss on everyone’s fire? you dick
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!
take some cake, throw it onto a hot frying-pan, shake it – there you go! An OSS pancake!
They really can make it… that says nothing about usefullness of such a non-lens
You can add
– affordable
and then you can pick even three! 😉
Well. I bet the price gonna ruin it for us !!.
Based on the translate article, the sentence below the lens info makes it sound like its a standard lens, not a pancake.
From Translate: “Above E mirror not a biscuit mirror” Translates further to: “Above E lens is not a pancake lens….”
Having the FS700, a 16-50 2.8 OSS is ALL i want. It’s the only thing i’m really hoping for in E-mount. If it’s announced, i’ll pre-order it Day 1. I kinda don’t want it to be collapsable. Really don’t want a pancake.
I know people with the NEX7 and 5n want smaller lenses. Maybe we’ll get two different kinds! But there’s quite a demand for us FS100/700 owners too. 16-50 2.8 OSS would probably be the top selling lens no matter how bit it is.
And in A99 news, did anyone else see Rex’s followup on the flash hotshoe issue? Apparently it’s not ISO after all, but a completely new design to accommodate microphones, lights, and other accessories:
http://www.dynaxdigital.com/general-photography-talk/a99/
11-18 sounds awesome. I really do wish they’d revisit that 16mm prime though. It’d be great to give the m43 12mm some true competition.
Have to remember that large black g standard zoom that they originally showed back on the first roadmap. Would suck though for all the lenses to come out now i have jumped ship to m43. I mean that first 2011 roadmap has been spot on so far about types of lens (even if time scales have slipped a little).
There is a standard zoom coming, which all rumors point to being collapsible/pancake.
Then there is the high quality G standard zoom, which is likely to be a faster aperture zoom.
They are not the same lens, look at the roadmap. The first will launch in September, the second in early 2013. The first will also (maybe slowly) replace the existing kit zoom, it is purely about making the kit smaller. The second is about being high quality but will be more expensive, larger, heavier. They are direct competitors of the Panasonic X 14-42 and X 12-35 respectively.
Unbunch your knickers everyone.
Cosidering size and cost, I’d rather a 16-50/f4.0 !
Thats what i want! better then 3.5-5.6!
it’s still better then f/4-6.5.
Be optimistic!
Sony is really lacking a fisheye for APS-C where all competitions already have.
There is some third party one… not too useful focal lenght.
They also talk about the hot shoe will be able to convert to AIS(which the handycam recent use) and new 60 flash light, WOW.
Also interesting is that the NEX-6 and 5R (?) will also include this new hot shoe. It sounds like the NEX-6 will use the NEX-7’s sensor, but the question is will it have a touchscreen.
50mm Zeiss will be awesome. Anybody out there with a 70-400G that has problems with soft appearing (not very sharp) photos when at 400mm f.5.6?
That 50mm 1.4 SAM sounds very appealing to me and my budget. Especially given that SAM is quieter and faster now, and that it’s been upgraded from f1.8 to f1.4 it should be a very nice lens for those that aren’t professionals, if the price stays similar to now. Should be a good video lens now too that it’s quieter.
It won’t be a replacement of the 50mm f1.8 DT SAM. It will be replacing the 50mm f1.4 screw drive Minolta rebadge from the 80’s, it will also be Full Frame unlike the DT.
Indeed Matt. The f1.8 and f1.4 versions will co-exist.
The original text clearly says: none of the E lenses is a pancake.
This site’s name is Sony DSLR Family.
Not SonySDF…it’s only domain name.
So 3 Nex lenses the same as current alpha lenses, an updated 50/1.4 with a motor, a revised 70-400 in a different colour and a 50/1.2 which is actually a new lens.
None of this is bad, but I can’t help feeling underwhelmed. Nex lenses are good for the nex people, and the zeiss will get some followers. However, the lineup really does need more than this.
16-50 2.8 G quality OSS APS-C pancake?
impossible
or maybe laws of physics changed 🙂
Guy specifically says on the website that this lens won’t be a pancake as SAR reported.
But that said – it’s just yet another rumor.
Check this old lens preview lineup.
http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/1009/sony/Photokina_E-mount_06.jpg
The G standard zoom is way too big to be a pancake. Remembering this image, I was surprised, when the G pancake rumour surfaced. The new 16-50/2.8 rumour is much more in line with this old image.
If the 16-50 would be a 2,8 lense, that would be a dream come true to me! Then i would stay on nex system for sure.
