That’s cool: Gaffer taped NEX-7!

Our reader Jimmy Fok found a way to make look the NEX-7 even more sexy. He gaffer taped the Zeiss 24mm, NEX7 and 50mm lenses because “I hate the shiny look and didn’t want attention to the camera.” Looks cool or not?

P.S.: Jimmy’s website is www.calibrepics.com

    1. Yeah, perhaps not a good tape to use. There are some very good masking tapes available in hobby shops so he could have used that and colored it black for the same effect. Or just stretch over some sections of tubular neoprene on the lens and use a removable black marker on the Sony logo. Oh well. Cool ? Not to me, but it looks like he made the effort to do a good job with the tape he chose.

  1. I’ve been looking a way to paint black my 50mm 1.8, I hate the shining silver color of the nex lenses… I might try this!

    1. Why not using a Hoya filter as protector to your lens? I already broken to protector filters on my lenses, but better them than a 1.000€ lens.

      1. He means you should use high quality filters like b+ w and rodenstock. Hoya have high quality version of their filters as well, mind you.

        1. I’m not trolling i’m a NEX user myself i love them to bits. They are a lot of great things but pretty they are not, and work of art they definitely not! Different strokes for different folks I guess.

    1. When you do photography in same difficult places and you have camera with a zeiss or leica logo, somebody may Hijack you.

    2. @Ibrahim: the same reason why people prefer the Leica M9-P over the M9. They just don’t care to show off

      1. I think its the exact opposite. Showing off is exactly what he is doing. The same as people who do it to the m9 d800 whatever. “Look I got this expensive gear but i’m a pro and this is my tool, I did buy it for its looks”. They know the people that they are trying to impress, other photographers. They will still recognise what camera it is and be impressed. henri cartier bresson used to do this for all the right reasons but fanboys read his bio and copy him. they have pretty big shoes to fill.

  2. I would rather see him spray paint it! Can’t wait to see the sticky residue when the tape falls off.

  3. I used to do this when I was a Photo-journalist. Its not pretty, but its practical. You don’t draw attention to yourself, you don’t have people trying to see what camera your shooting with and start a conversation, and it makes it look like junk so people don’t want to steel it 🙂

  4. Btw for those of you thinking it leaves a sticky residue when you take the tape off, think again! Thats why its called gaffer tape, its special tape that is mixed with adhesive and spread on to a cloth web for strength. Its main benefit is that it leaves little or no residue when you peel it off. I had this stuff for almost a year on most of my alphas and when I removed it, I only had a tiny amount of residue and it came off easily.

  5. I did that to the focus ring of my 16mm + NEX fisheye converter because:
    1) The fisheye converter is loose and moves around depending on how the camera is elevated.
    2) Can’t see focus peaking well enough in the sunlight so I use DMF to focus at the hyperfocal distance then set the camera to MF.
    3) I got tired of bumping the focus ring which would make me have to refocus.

  6. I also have to jump on the hate bandwagon. Not really my style. Looks tacky. Besides, I don’t see how you will get less attention with this abomination…

  7. I don’t mind the look but if it gets hot enough that glue is going to sep into the the lens and fog it over time.

  8. This tape article has no place in a news blog. Some guy puts tape on his lens and that warrants a post ? Come-on Andrea, your better than this. Just skip a day’s posting if there is nothing worthy of posting at that time.

    1. so you are incapable of deciding not to read something which doesn’t interest you??

(sorry, reply to Zony not JB)

      1. Who wouldn’t want less detris in their day. Here is other compelling news you should read; the sun rose and set today- pictures to follow. Not news, is it ? As a matter of fact its a waste of your time even seeing my news item that the sun rose today. So someone put tape on their lens – we all could have better spent that 20 seconds of our life some way other than staring at tape. And, doesn’t Andrea have more important stories to chase? Are there no better ways to spend his bandwidth than non-news fluffball stories about gaffer tape ?

    2. I laughed at the URI, which I won’t bother to visit. “Pimped up Nikon D4” – I am pretty sure the price tag of the D4 implies it is pimped up to begin with.

  9. This is actually quite a proven way to prevent theft of equipment, especially when you’re travelling.

Hard to believe, but it actually works. Less shiny cameras with no visible brands on them get stolen less often.

    1. until the glue get hot and fogs the non sealed lens. Taping over the name is much different the taping up the entire camera.

  10. I’ve done that since day one on my gf1. The most recurent question i have about my camera is ‘is it digital?’, so i assume it works.

  11. This affects functionality zero, so anyone who has an issue with this is being pretty vain about a camera, that is not even theirs no less.

  12. If you believe putting a B+W filter will make your pictures sharper instead of a Hoya you might as well think mayo makes all food taste better.

  13. I think it looks ok

Those that question him covering up the Zeiss emblem or saying the camera is a “work of art” is quite absurd to me. I can’t believe there are people who WANT people to look at their camera like that. It is a camera, not jewelry. I could see it being called a work of art from a technological perspective, but physically it is just a camera.

  14. Something about thousands of dollars of electronics and any kind of “tape” is usually not an improvement. Thumbs down.

  15. I have been putting gaffers tape on my lenses and cameras for a couple years now, mainly to protect them from scratches and wear. Certain areas like the inside of the grip, edges that stick out and lens hoods tend to acquire lots of scratches. By applying this tape in the right spots, it keeps them nice and protected, and I think it looks cool too. Also, I’ve found it helps give better grip to the Ownuser battery grips for NEX-5 and a55 cameras. When duct tape dies and goes to heaven, it becomes gaffers tape.
