(SR4) No new high end NEX camera coming this year…

Trusted sources just told me that a new high end APS-C model is expected for 2013 only and certainly not for Photokina this year. The high end model for 2012 will be (and remain) the already super Sony NEX-7.

Sony NEX-7 price check at [shopcountry 8454]. If you own or (soon will own) the NEX-7 you ahve to pair it witht he superb Zeiss 24mm lens in Stock now at Amazon.

    1. @Joe… ditto, right on. Except that if the GPS provides real world ‘human’ information like location map, and/or landmarks and not just cryptic coordinates. The articulating screen like on the compact Panasonic cameras I feel are better, more versatile, and apparently more durable then the flimsier angle up-down design on the NEX cameras.

By not releasing a new model until 2013, Sony does me (us) a favor….. retain money in the pocket then finding a reason to offload money. Where Sony can really do every one a favor is to provide more lens choices.

  1. That’s fine, but Sony is really strating to demonstrate an all-around inability to actually launch photography product of any type.

      1. How’s that a99 working out? How long did it take to get the NEX 7 going? Sure, there’s the NEX 3f. Weeee. Fun with that 18-55! Where are all the lenses Sony has talked about in their roadmap promises?

        1. Wake up Anon
Sony is doing a nice job. Starting to become one of the leaders.
A57,A65,A77 — Awesome cropped sensors cameras!!!
Rx100 — best point and shoot ever
Nex-f3 — amazing camera for the price
Nex-5n — Amazing in low light
Nex-7 — Amazing camera that has all other companies trying to make a clone.

          A99 — Worth waiting for!!!

          1. We’ll talk again in December while we are still waiting for those announced lenses to actually ship.

Out of the cameras you listed, the RX100 is fantastic for its camera class, as is the 5n for IQ (though th add on EVF is $$$ and there are so few lenses). The 7 is OK, esp for MF. The rest can be tossed in the hopper.

  2. Good move. But more lenses are needed. Waiting for a good telephoto, something like a OSS 85mm f/1.8 and 30mm f/2, if you want, with OSS.

      1. A new 24mm F2 or F2.5 lens would be great! Just make iit cheaper than €400 and half the size of the Zeiss at the largest. Canon did it, why can’t Sony?!

And Sony, while you’re at it:

60mm F2.0 macro (if you don’t have the resources your Tamron friends should know how to design such a lens 😉

14-40mm F4 OSS (wider but not longer than the kit lens, sharp across the frame starting at max aperture and priced around the same as the excellent SAL1550F28 – if it is doable at all of course. I’m no expert on lens design but I think I remember something about WA being easier to design for mirrorless than tele)

50-150mm or 50-200mm F4 OSS (under €1K and wider but not longer than the SEL55210)

      1. Thank you…………
        I get’s a little old doesn’t it, people asking for a full-frame NEX (E-Mount).
They don”t understand that the lens needs to be sized for the sensor.
Maybe what they are asking for is a smaller mirrorless A-Mount. But the lens size would never be as small as they want.
DT lenses work on APS-C sensors
Full-frame lenses work on both but ARE bigger
        E-mount lenses work on APS-C

        1. I’d happily settle for a full frame alpha where the translucent mirror could be moved out of the way.

  3. My Wishlist: Full Frame Nex (using mount that is compatible with alpha lenses, and including an adapter that drops in to use Nex lenses). I like the idea of a full frame mirror-less camera… Not sure how technically feasible it is…

    1. You see man, this is relatively stupid. A compatible mount with Alpha mount is alpha mount. An adaptable mount with alpha mount is NEX mount (with adapter obviously)

Now, you want that mount? then the camera must be as thick as alpha to begin with because of the sensor-mount distance so the lenses can focus. Mate, a full frame nex, to be as thin as NEX or Fuij X pro (which is actually marginally thinner mount flange) would require a whole new set of lenses. Seriously, there are not many lenses for NEX that are as good as the Zeiss 24 (stop whining about the price people) Yes, Canon just made a 22mm f2, so what? is it good? we dont know. Will it be like the CZ 24 or like the Sony 16mm? If its like the latter, F!ӣ it, it aint wirth its salt.

Do we want more quality NEX lenses first? or a new full frame nex camera that will require either an adaptor or be as thick as SLT/SLR just to fit the current alpha line? Or we want a full frame NEX that will require a whole new set of lenses and, with sony’s great track record at bringing quality lenses, wait 3 years for good stuff to come? I am tired of this wishful thinking. Its like wishing Kate Moss was your wife now but she looked like she did in 1991.

      MATE!!

      1. Patrick, You will have the benefit of low-light performance that the alpha line simply cannot match due to their translucent mirror design.

Whether there is some clever way of designing it, or creating a slightly different sensor size, I don’t know, but I would like a portable Nex for much of my time, and a full-frame one for times when I need the ultimate in Image Quality and Low Light Sensitivity.

You would not need new lenses for a Nex FF of course – it would be compatible with alpha-lenses…and I just meant alpha “type” mount, since obviously behind it there won’t be a mirror, so some kind of change needs to be done throughout the imaging path. The actual mount itself should be 100% compatible with Alpha.

I agree 100% with you that they need to focus on e-mount lenses first though! (They could spend the next 2-3 years getting a good selection there, then come out with a FF Nex)

        1. I agree with Patrick. I dont deny the benefit of full frame but you are dreaming. It will be a FAT NEX because of the flange distance. See here on the distance required between sensor/film to mount for any lens (designed for that mount) to focus properly at on the sensor/film plane.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance

So it would either have to be a FAT NEX or a NEX that would appear to walk around with a small sexual arousement around before mounting any lens.

That design also represents a drawback because SLR lenses (as its the whole alpha line) were designed with the limitation that there is a mirror and so their rearmost element cannot go inside any deeper into the body. They are also the reason of why SLR lenses are much bigger than rangefinder lenses at the any focal length and aperture (see Zeiss biogon 35mm and distagon 35mm f2) This presents a challenge as well for wide angles as well as wide aperture designs (see Zeiss biogon 21mm and distagon 21mm) Yes, many M lenses have issues with borders and corners and what not with the NEX 7 but the M9 shows that software pre-programing can take care of the casts albeit not the smudginess (which is a digital sensor/filter/micro lens issue)

So you want a camera 100% compatible with alpha lenses…a camera that by default would have to be thicker than a Fuji X Pro 1, Leica M9. Actually, there is a camera that is designed as such as to support its previous SLR heritage…the Pentax K 01!!! a brick of a camera a full mm thicker than the Sony a mount.

Just see how much any of the adaptors (LA EA1/2) add to a NEX before a good lens on. You see…those who like the Zeiss Sonnar 24mm like it not only because its good but also because it is a 35mm replacement in full frame. Yes, we could all go and buy the best of the worst 35mm in the world! that 35mm 1.4 that Sony has cared least to modify since the Minolta days (actually, apparently the Minolta version, or a version from those days, is better than the Sony version today) So we are left with a lemon! a big lemon!!

Please enlighten us with how do you imagine a full frame NEX retaining a slim (I’ll give it to you, not as slim as today’s NEX) body and discreet appearance when any equivalent lens in the alpha line is MASSIVE! Of course! Sony could make us all a favor! a NEX with M mount!! now that would be original and gutsy of them! So many lenses to choose from! and focus peaking! Now that!!!! that would be a camera. To begin with, it would be nicer looking than the Ricoh.

Although, like LR says, its fine for people to dream. I know that Sony researchers would look at pages like this one (I would say, especially this one and others similar like Sony Alpha Lab) because the get a sense of what current users want and react to/from their products. It was from sites like this that Sony came up with the NEX 7 (more physical controls) Carry on man, wish ahead, but be careful for what you wish because what you may get may not be good.

          1. You didn’t read my post prooerly. I said I’d be ok with it being larger. If someone can come up with a smart way of making it smaller, that would be a bonus. However, I’d be equally happy if Sony comes out with a ff alpha that you can move the translucent mirror out of the way. I want the possibility to have the camera be extra light sensitive at times.

        1. Thanks 🙂 I understand that my wishes and dreams may not appeal to the large masses, but since there is freedom of speech, and I’m hardly being very aggressive about it, I don’t understand the negativity.

  4. sounds good to me, my Nex7 can take a little bit more abuse.. the only things i would change about it would be small things anyways: -unified interface with Alpha series(like the RX100 has)
    -GPS
-shutter remote port instead of Mic in(i know..i don`t do video and don`t care about it at all)
    -programmable video rec button..
-little better build quality on the grip..the rubber is coming of on my Nex7

  5. I can live with no new high-end Nex but all the more reason to give us a firmware update for the 7. Sony knows what’s on the list. And Sony, please add additional aspect ratios on that update. I have projects that require a 1:1 ratio and although I know I can crop later, it’s not the same. Others have expressed the same interest.

    1. I’d say there’s a good chance Sony will release a FW update for the NEX-7. Also, bring out more lenses already.

  6. Give me a mirrorless fullframe with decent usability and I shall ask for no more. No mirrorless fullframe, my money stays in the old oak box.

  7. That’s a shame, i am a pro and I have canon L lenses.
I think there is a canon high end coming soon, that will let me use all my L lenses with auto focus. Plus I have ex flashes, etc.

I really wanted to buy a Sony camera they look like fun cameras, perhaps I will buy the F5, if its good.
I can’t see why it wouldn’t be as the other Nex cameras are great.

    Mark

    1. Thank you, oh professional ne plus ultra photographer, for gracing Sony Alpha Rumors with your presence and let us know that us, lesser mortals using Sony, can not be professionals but enthusiasts with fun cameras.

May Canon seek the path towards a rebadged 5D Mark II minus the mirror and serve it to you as it has served the 7D in its many flavors (600D, 60D, 650D, EOS M) but in mirrorless.

He he…he is living the dream!

  8. Seriously, we just need a proper firmware update for the current NEX7! But Sony seems can release new model cameras faster than release a firmware update.

  9. And I ran as fast as I could, and then some more… To another brand, which has everything I needed. Not a lot of what I don’t and more and more exactly the same of what I don’t need but with a different name… Feels good my friends, my Sony gear got sold for less than it should have, but I took the loss and said thanks…

    1. I need an electronic view finder and in-body stabilisation, neither Canon nor Nikon offer it, they are useless brands to me.

I don’t care what YOU need.
