Actually hotshoe is as sturdy as is 1/4″ plate at the bottom. It is designed to have heavier and long attachments that will have a stronger forces applied than the body itself alone in smaller surface than bottom plate.
You can even see the common accidents reports where cameras drops with flashes, lights and displays attached to hotshoe and the mount doesn’t break at all so easily. But the bottom plate will come out fairly easily, why Canon was even required to redesign their already sturdy bottom plate among Nikon.
I’m sure the weight is going to the bottom plate. This is designed to carry the camera, lens and heavy equipment. The hot-shoe is not as sturdy as you might think.
I am using a big Nikon flash or a microphone on the hot-shoe. The hot-shoe of my GH3 came loose after almost 2 years of usage. Got it repaired within the warranty time.
This seems to be a week spot of the GH3. There are only a few very small screws and especially the big flash puts a lot of load on the hot-shoe if you move the camera around.
If you do anything beside narrative film production, this sort of stuff is ridiculous. If you can’t shoot good video with a “naked” camera, you ain’t gonna have any easier time with a bunch of crap hanging off the side of it.
I do wonder if this kind of stuff is more for people that want to play “dress-up” with their gear than anything practical?
Wow. That’s an incredibly complex kickstarter page. If you can’t clearly understand somethings value and cost in under five minutes, that’s usually a clear sign to me, not to buy in.

Everybody thinks their needs for on camera accessories makes for a hit product.
Makes their Willy go hard more like…
How old are you, 13?
This dude will look back at his Kickstarter video in 5 years time and think “what the f*ck was i doing?”
From an engineer’s point of view the hotshoe is a soft point unsuitable for rigid attachment, damage to the camera may ensue.
It is pretty clear that the hot shoe is not load bearing.

I whipped off my GH3 hotshoe walking under a door frame with mu Rode Mic still attached. Peeled that sucker right off.

Making money? Helping other film makers?
Geez. Frankencage. Just as insane and unpleaseant to the eye.
Nah, I can see a point with cages and rigs. Just not this one…
Looks like theres some sort of zacuto style grip mount option? seems like that could be useful – is this something available already for the GH4?
