That’s cool! Shoot new kind of pictures with the Olympus 14-42mm “Freelensing” technique!

If you own the “cheap” and rather unspectacular [shoplink 22691 ebay]Olympus 14-42mm collapsible zoom (here on eBay)[/shoplink]…welll…that new will make your day! It has a unique and surprisingly funny feature. You can actually take shots with it even if you detach it from the camera! 😉

Just watch the video on top to learn the “freelensing” technique discovered by Tony Lin from Witonosfreestyle. By using that method you can get pictures like this one:

  1. Newsflash: you can do that with any lens. That’s an old trick. All you have to do is set your camera to shoot without lens.

    1. Not in all cases. When you want to shoot a far away subject, your focus will want to be close to infinity. When you try this trick with a normal lens, tilting the lens moves it too far away from the sensor. You need a collapsable type lens like the 14-42mm in order to tilt the lens and still be able to focus at infinity due to the glass element being close to the sensor.

      1. So, the same thing can be achieved by using old dslr (longer ffd) lens on mirrorless camera (shorter ffd, no mirror)?

  2. Oh, c’mon! What’s cool in it? it is the principle of the tilt/shift made it cheaper. You can get a Lensbaby very cheaply and get better and more controllable results. 😉

    1. with LB you won’t get the same effect as with tilt/shift lens, The reason, the LB’s have a curved field of focus, and a tilt-shift has a flat.

  3. It’s really old technique and definately not “discovered”. I think even DigitalRev had video about it couple years ago.

  4. I also like to use this lens for super close up macros. Just flip it around at 14mm and start freelensing. Need a good light and a stable hand though.

  5. What would be REALLY cool is if Oly would make the 5 axis movement of the sensor for creative photography. Pentax lets you do shift on some models.

  6. That’s just ridiculous.
You could also run naked down mainstreet in the middle of winter.
That doesn’t mean you should do it.

If I wanted half-baked out-of focus images, there are better ways than that.

    1. the ‘better’ way may cost you at least 2k. technically in winter, the temperature helps cool down the sensor if not the dust :p

  7. That french guy in the video speaks bad english. Which would be ok, if he didn’t also mix guitar rock music a good 6dB louder than his softer speaking parts over it, making it completely illegible. Fix your sound mixing, frenchie! And don’t recommend nearly illegible videos, 43!

  8. works pretty good with the 12-32 too, you just have to open it half way between closed and 12mm, maybe a bit closer to 12mm in order to aquire focus, a very quick example out of my office-window:
