Schneider confirms MFT lenses are coming in 2014.

43rumors reader Jan asked Schneider when they expect to release the MFT lenses. This is their official answer that supports the rumor we posted a while ago:

Many thanks for your interest in our M43 lens.
From today’s perspective the lens is expected  in 2014.
Thank you for your kind understanding and patience.

As I told you before there may be some changes on the original lens specs (14mm f/2.0 the 30mm f/1.4 and the Macro 60mm f/2.4). And I secretly hope the impossible, a Xenon 16mm f/1.2   🙂

Current Schneider lenses (non MFT mount):

  1. I think it is known that they will be AF lenses. But are they developed for the m43 mount / image circle or for APS-C?

        1. Performance is never about looks, and I’m sure these will be fantastic lenses, but is it just me or are these some ugly looking lenses?

    1. Barrett..did not see your post before I posted….so the lenses are supposed to be AF….bu not made specifically for MFT…just adapted APS-C lenses?

  2. Schneider are nices lens. Sad there will be no 25mm like Leica/Voightlander.

And 14/2 is not enough wide, Leica 15/1.7 is incoming soon, maybe before Schneider 14/2. And Olympus 12/2 is a superb lens.

      1. +10000!

Using mediocre lenses really makes the most sense.
Why would anyone want to squeeze maximum performance out of M4/3 sensors by using the best available lenses? 😉

  3. Really looking forward to these. Dedicated fast AF lenses now from Schneider, Oly, Panny/leica, plus fast dedicated manual lenses from VL, Kodak, plus the usual cross branded sigma, samyang, tamron, SLR magic.

MFT really is dying as a system, right?! 😉

  4. Native MFT with AF – very good, should be small and optically superb, but focal length is not so good.

    – 14mm f/2.0 – there is Olympus 12/2 and Panasonic f/2.5 – Schneider will be much more expensive. Why to buy expensive 14/2 instead of cheaper Oly or Pana?

    – 30mm f/1.4 – there is superb PanaLeica 25/1.4 – cheaper, better focal length. Why should I choose more expensive 30/1.4?

    – macro 60mm f/2.4 – there is not expensive Olympus 60/2.8 macro – Schneider will be twice or more expensive.

Much, much better will be native MFT 16/1.2 (but small enough for MFT). 25/0.95 with AF. 180/2.8 with size for MFT. Or for example 10/2 (or 10/2.8).

    I don’t see clients for very expensive 14/2, 30/1.4 or 60/2.4.

    1. I agree…for a lens company like Snhneider to come in to the party late, and to be able to see the total lay-of-the-land of a developing system …to me…they have chosen to produce some “interesting” focal lengths for MFT????

  5. All we need, and i know lot of people will agree with me, is a ultra wide angle…

I’m not fan of zoom, just like uwa prime.

  6. the weird focal lengths suggests these are adapted from APS-C

Still think 17mm is a weak spot in m43. A 17mm 1.4 with AF would hit a very sweet spot.

Those mentioning the 14mm 2.5 should get real. That lens has great attributes, size and value for money. IQ is good – considering. The 12mm 2.0 seems like the real competition there.

The upcoming 15mm 1.2 also sounds like a winner.

Man, what a lucky system we have.

    1. It’s nice to see two german lens superbrands like Leica and Schneider making MFT lenses. Olympus has a new pro range (the zooms) and a great premium range (12mm, 17mm, 45mm, 60mm, 75mm). Zeiss is making A and E mount lenses. The G lenses are also premium ones. So MFT cameras and Sony cameras have much more possibilities regarding premium/luxury lenses than Canon and Nikon.

    2. I agree. I love the Schneider quality but to propose 60mm and 120 FOV equivalents which are BOTH odd focal lenghts and which already exist in the m4/3 lens line up , added to the price would make, I am afraid , for VERY marginal sales that may make Schneider think that there is not a large enough market for them for m4/3rds

Where is the schneider tele Xenar 3.5 or 4/150mm ( 300mm equivalent). ?

      Harold

      1. Only odd to you because you haven’t seen one yet. If you use one you won’t be seeing too much difference between them and a 50 mm and 135 mm respectively. Also, are you really aware of any particular FL when you are using a zoom? And does it bother you?

  7. Schneider`s never ending delay is absolutely ridiculous. Other competitors develop generations of lenses within the same time. Comments introduced with “from today`s perspective” are nothing to build on. MFT engagement is an absolutely weak chapter of Schneider`s history.

  8. Initially I have strong urge to buy this 14mm F2.0 & it really took too long for schneider to put it in the market .
Now with the announcement of Leica DG Summilux 15mm F1.7 , I afraid it might steal the show .

      1. Could very well be. But the 25mm 1.4 is one of the best lenses in the system, I see no reason why the 15 would be much worse. That said, the 25 also suffers from barrel distorsion. If Schneider can pull off distortion free, it would indeed result in slightly sharper lenses, especially in the corners. But at what cost.

I for one am REALLY looking forward to the Pana Leica 15, that’s next on my purchase list, based on the quality of the 25.

    1. I worry that the aperture ring will only work on Panny cameras (like Oly lens function buttons). Not a deal breaker but will limit sales to those with small Oly cameras and may discourage those thinking about switching to MFT.

      1. If they were smart they would make it manual, and then when you want auto/camera controlled, click it over to the ‘A’ pictured in the mock-up.

As I understand it there has already been a lens with a similar aperture ring, but it did not work like this. Does anyone know what lens that was and how it worked?

      2. Yes, it’s sad that Olympus won’t dedicate a bit of firmware space for the aperture ring. Even my Four-Thirds Leica/Panasonic 25mm f/1.4’s aperture ring works through the adapter on my GH3.

  9. Schneider has more expertise for fast wides and lenses for smaller formats than anyone else, and I assume these are just the beginning. 12mm? 9mm? 5mm? 🙂

    1. Don’t go thinking there will be more when the 14mm f/2.0 hasn’t even arrived, and I could swear that it was to be available in late 2013.

I really hope they’re weather-sealed because I really don’t want to use anything other than weather-sealed equipment.

  10. If these do not have a manual focus mode it would be a deal breaker for me. I would have prefered distance marks, common housing size and cine gearing. More exciting are the Xenon Full Frame Primes which will be adaptable via speed booster. They will probably be about $4K a pop, though.

  11. was thinking about the 14mm with weathing sealing
but now just saveing money for olympus super telephoto
more short length lens that are all ready made not so good but more lens to pick from is good
would pay a lot for 180mm f2.8 mft with AF i have an old OM wich is
great but no AF or tirpod shoe

  12. Who the f cares about this?

Nearly 2 months with no omd available, where are the availability problems post admin? Apply only to panasonic?

    1. iirc it was supposed to be available from around oct. 5th, which is less then a month ago, not 2 months. And indeed some people received theirs, I didn’t yet, but supposedly thats gonna be fixed this or early next week…

But know what True Homer, your exaggeration and off-topic post clearly marks you as a troll, regardless of if you do happen to have some point (which you somewhat do about rather limited availability of the E-M1 so far)

      1. The em1 was released sept 10. And the fact its off topic proves my point. Amazon has an estimated ship of december and adorama doesnt know. When 3 weeks went by with the gh3 there were already posts about shipping problems

        1. No it was ANNOUNCED on that date, go learn the difference if you are at all capable of that. Also, posting off-topic things only proves something about the poster, and not something to be proud of.

  13. Not sure there is enough differentiation esp. macro and 14mm. 30 mm is useful – fits spot on between Panny 20mm and Oly 45mm. More interesting would be:

    10mm f2.8
    400mm f4 tele
    Any f1 lens with AF
These would be big and expensive, but would work nicely with the new breed of larger MFT bodies and Schneider would have the market to themselves.

    1. +1.
Getting crowded in the 12 to 60 mm corner, even for really good lenses.
I think Schneider planned these a long long time ago when it wasn’t that crowded.
Both 10 (or wider!) and 400 are actually missing, but schneider’s not the right company for the latter. In particular of the already have problems getting AF for normal primes right.

  14. Panasonic Leica 15mm f/2 or Schneider 14mm f/2, that is the question for me. Whoever gets its lens out first will get my money, and I suspect that of many others too. M43 does not have any decent prime that is so wide as yet. So, let the race begin. Winner of the race takes all, or most of the money that people have been waiting to spend on something like this.

    1. I cannot really comment on the Olympus 2/12, I never even held it in my hand. Of course, it all depends on how high you raise the bar, but my assumption is that it is a very decent wide prime lens.

  15. C’mon guys,
the image don’t represent future MFT lenses, but actual APS-C.
It’s said that “As I told you before there may be some changes on the original lens specs (14mm f/2.0 the 30mm f/1.4 and the Macro 60mm f/2.4). And I secretly hope the impossible, a Xenon 16mm f/1.2”
Can’t imagine Schneider engineers taking 1/2 years to design a m4/3 lens mount…
They are probably dealing with aperture ring, fast & silent AF, etc. to provide a premium set of lenses.
Let’s dream : the equivalence in m4/3 would be:
    – 10.5mm f/2.0 => say 10mm, that’s interesting !
    – 22.5mm f/1.4 => say 23mm, if it’s premium let’s say no vignetting, no distortion, silent & quick zoom, ultra sharp wide open! What an all-around lens!
    – 45mm f/2.4 (macro)=> ultra-sharp, maybe 1=1?
At the end of the dream, the prices : 1500-2500 USD?
