I have one of these brackets. Fantastic on all counts except one: The USB/HDMI door is blocked, to the extent you have to unbolt the L bracket and fold the rubber door back before bolting the bracket on again. Doing this repeatedly will kill the seal on that door (maybe its hinge as well). I’ve let RRS know this and asked if they can note this incompatibility for buyers on their website, which they do not right now.
I thought I had the same problem. However, you can reach around behind the L-bracket and open the doors.
What on earth is that good for? It doesn’t even have a second tripod mount on the “L component”.
Hubertus – these are arca-swiss compatible tripod L plates (so it is as good as you can get for mounting on a tripod given that some of the best heads are arca-compatible) If you want to thread in a mini tripod, you can still do that on the bottom but a centred thread on the side would block both doors!!
What about the GX7? People are waiting for some bigger grip!
Don’t know about a larger grip, but a custom L-plate for the GX7 would indeed be nice.
These RRS plates are worst designed and ugliest accessory for any camera, ever.
And among the most useful for anyone who extensively uses a tripod and needs to switch between landscape and portrait orientations quickly.
It’s a purely functional accessory, something that I’ve found to be essential for certain kinds of work.
Hogwash.
I think I should buy a milling machine and start cranking these things out. I think I could match the quality and beat the $125 price pretty easily.
Yes, you can easily beat that $125 price. There are plenty of Chinese made 3 way milling machines with computer inputs that you can purchase for your home and open source software to program them. As long as you have access to aluminum stock this is fairly easy to make.
But, they are first out of the gate and you are paying up because there is no competition. So, if you have the knowledge I suggest you make some to help drive down the price. The guys who make Nodal Ninja may already have a cheaper version that does the same. I have the Fanotec offset plate and will have to see if the fits the E-M1.
Give it a few months and there will be others I am sure as long as the camera remains popular
Does your cheaper price include the labour to produce the goods, process the orders, package the items, pay taxes, pay the capital cost of the milling machine plus any repairs/ parts it may require, the cost of setting up the website, any advertising costs, any extra for returns/fraudulent payments, insurance for you business, fire and health and safety costs to meet regulations for your workshop etc etc.
With most businesses the goods are a relatively small part of the business.
Yes.
If it aint broke, don’t fix it!
While this contraption may indeed serve some purpose from some smaller cameras but why I’d want this on my em1 I honestly don’t know.
Take a thing of beauty designed by Olympus and attatch that thing on there?…not for me thanks.
So you would rather have an offset hole when creating panoramas?
Offset holes tend not to be a problem with the majority of “normal” QR plates as they have adjustable fixings to take account of the variation between cameras; but if you’re happy to buy special overpriced customised brackets for each camera -no problem
If you think that the functionality of an L-bracket has anything to do with the size of a camera, you don’t understand why they are so useful.
It’s ok. We get that you and many others here don’t actually know what an L-bracket is used for. Once you use one or see how useful it is, you’ll want one.
Before these things arrived on the scene, what do you think we were doing, just giving up? This isn’t the only solution and those who don’t use are ignorant of it but each to their own I guess. Not for me though.
I know it’s not the only solution. It’s just one of many tools that will help the photographer capture the scene before that moment vanishes.
Before autofocus arrived on the scene, what do you think we were doing, just giving up? NO, of course not! We WERE taking a lot longer to get the shot though. Same thing applies here.
Many times I’ve had to shoot something really quick, I’ve already composed the shot but at the last minute I decided it would look better in portrait mode (or landscape). So I have to loosen the tripod head and rotate it sideways. I then need to recompose the shot because rotating the head moved the camera to the left (or right). By the time that is over, I’ve missed it the shot. If the object was really close, after I had rotate the head to the side, I would have had to move the whole tripod to get my composition again. An L-bracket allows you the speed of simply rotating the camera on its side without needing to recompose. I don’t see why people WOULDN’T like this.
@jshaw
Seriously, if it works for you that’s great. From what I’ve read you’ve confirmed my point anyway, there’s more than one way and that method isn’t for me but for you it’s working and that’s great.
Before af arrived, how do you think people took pictures with things being in focus?
Before the advent of auto exposure, how did people get well exposed pictures?
RRS brackets are very well made and of great value for tripod use. I consider them an essential accessory.
actually if they would make some strap holes loops on the left part also it would make a very comfy carry option either regular or diagonal, with the lens pointed down and still being able to have a flat bottom, tripod hole…
Not to mention that you add some meat to the camera to hold it.
LOL, we M43 fanboys and girls want small camera’s and we do not care so much about image quality. But now we are getting big grips, big lenses, big prices and big camera’s with the same old not so good tiny sensors. M43 its a funny world.
It’s funny, you have a choice, you can pick up small or fairly large stuff in m4/3. It’s ridiculous.
Does not compute: Large camera stuff with tiny sensor.
If for you half the size means tiny than I understand why for you can’t compute so many things.
You haven’t shown us your mad skillz yet, Shenkie. I can’t imagine why that would be. 😉
Were are the endless posts about the non availability of the em1? Does that only apply to panasonic?
This would be great!!! If B&H would ever SHIP ME MY CAMERA!!!!
Excuseme, I still don’t get it. What is this used for?
Is there some video?
Thanks
I got mine in yesterday and its fantastic. It does a few things.
It adds a quick method to use a tripod in both horizontal and vertical orientation if you ball head supports it. And two it adds about a 1/4″ or so to the height making it a little more comfortable to grip. Before my pinky would fall off the end, but now it’s secure and improves handling even more.
Anybody know whose wrist strap that is? Looks very nice.
This is the GS-3 wrist strap originally made for the Olympus E5/battery grip combo.
