  1. Utter FAILURE!

This can fall in line w/ the useless GM-1 marketing ‘small footprint’ HYPE.

    1. The GM1 is quite good in specification and image quality, though, for just a bit more for the current kit.

Of course, there is no 10x zoom lens or f/2.8 but what image quality will you get from a point-and-shoot?

      1. “Of course, there is no 10x zoom lens or f/2.8”

But there are interchangeable lenses, so you can get about any FOV with a similar or faster aperture, just not in a single lens.

        Different compromises for different users.

    2. The price point is completely wrong but in about a year it will sell for $200. Why not just start it at that price? There’s not a large market for a $700 P&S.

    3. A quick comparison:
      Stylus1 GM1
      Sensor: 1/1.7″ (7.44 x 5.58 mm) 4/3″ (17,30 x 13.00 mm)
      Weight: 402 g 204 g ( + lens 12-32mm = 291)
      Dim.: 116 x 67 x 57 mm 98.5 x 54.9 x 30.4 mm
      EVF No EVF
      Fixed lens Interchangeable lenses

To me these are completely different cameras.

  2. It doesn’t look bad for a point and shoot – and I was pleasantly surprised with the built in flash, something the e-m5 should have had. But that price is out to lunch, I don’t know who this is for.

    1. Agreed. I would have loved a built-in flash like this, for those occassional times I need a fill-flash. I hate that little flash accessory.

I also agree that the price seems to be a bit high. I would assume this competes with something like a Canon G16, which is about $150 cheaper.

  3. It is small with the lens retracted. Seems like it is pocketable — in a jacket. Most 43 readers would probably prefer a larger sensor, so the reception in this forum is likely not representative of the general reception. Having used the XZ-1 and been disappointed with the sensor quality above iso 400, I’m curious how it compares to e.g my (later) PEN E-P3. But that is probably for another forum/dpreview.

    1. Serieous? Dissapointed with a P&S above iso400? When I look at pics from my Oly E-500, iso 400 wasn´t really useable either. Take any enthusiast P&S and show me a not-smeared pic at iso400. Infact, the XZ-1 already starts smearing detail at iso200. At 100% it looks like a painting. What do people expect from P&S in future? Useable iso25K so you can take pictures in absolutly darkness? Conclusion: sometimes a picture can´t be taken handheld any more. For me it´s still on of the best pocketable P&S. (at least it fits perfectly into the side pockets of my shorts) The Stylus 1 is a nice but not so little P&S. I like it but will pass.

        1. I wouldn´t see this as an example of how well small sensors can perform in high iso!

For example this picture of yours! Even at iso125 it doesn´t look really good regarding noise and detail(e.g.bridge). http://www.flickr.com/photos/geoffroy65/10107558785/sizes/o/in/photostream/

          The reliable website digitalkamera.de writes:
“Starke Rauschunterdrückung sorgt für detailarme Bilder oberhalb von ISO 400”, basically means, “havy noise reduction above iso400 leads to a loss in detail”.

I mean, I know that. I don´t expect anything else. Small sensors with 10+MP can´t perform well regarding noise.

But, to be disappointed by small sensors iso performance means, that people still believe in miracles. And that is a little naiv, I think. ISO 400 with a P&S? Come on.

The xz-1 offers an 1.8-2.5 aparture! And being aware of the already mediocre iso200, I don´t shoot this cam above. Maybe there are some good P&S who deliver “satisfying” quality until iso400, but that´s it.

    2. In fact, XZ-2 has big improvement over XZ-1 due to the use of a better sensor. It is not fair to compare with PEN though because the sensor size already makes the difference, though E-P3 is not using a very high quality sensor as well. You have different zoom and aperture range. Just ask what you need, but the price tag of Stylus 1 is actually too high which makes me think Sony RX10 to be more attractive (especially the video features) in comparison.

  4. This is a superzoom! Feature rich, nicely built, and the price is good.
If you know what a superzoom is, you know it is really nice in its class.

    1. That’s just a ridiculous comment to make. It’s meant to look like an OM-D & be usable similarly to an XZ-2 but with built in flash & EVF & those that like it will buy it & without your ridicule.

  5. Personnally, I think it looks like a toy camera. But to be honest, I do not understand the Olympus designers: this camera includes a C1 and C2 positions in the top dial, something that the “Pro” E-M1 or the E-P5 is missing! What the hell are they thinking??

    1. You can set any four dial positions to be custom settings on the E-M1.
Unless of course you want to use i-auto on your ‘pro’ camera.
Which some of the people posting on here will no doubt do in real life.

        1. What’s wrong with handing it over in P mode? They’re unlikely to change any settings, ISO or WB, unless they’re trying to.

          1. I can have the PSAM modes configured to manual ISO, WB and focus point. iAuto makes it auto-everything.

  6. LOL Oly has lost it completly with their new camera’s. They all have small sensors an big prices. By by Oly. Ps i am surprised Oly did not put the word PRO on the camera just like the EM1. That would make it even more pathetic.

  7. Btw, this is probably the wrong forum to post about this camera. Sure, it looks like the other O-MD cameras, but the similarities stop there. It doesn’t surprise me that there are overly-critical comments about this camera, and not indicative of the target market.

    1. Good video. This camera looks like an excellent point and shoot (I like the new level gauge too). If it was selling for $500, people would probably be far less critical of it.

  8. It’s probably the best travel super zoom coming onto the marrket. All it needs now is weather sealing. In the travel market Oly has a winner

  9. 10x F2.8 zoom on a 1/1.7″ sensor is a great idea, a first. It’s quite thin, so the lens is nicely done. I don’t like the looks, but this is possibly the best camera in class filled with >5x zoom models. They had better made that zoom a bit faster, even if was twice as thick – there are bigger fixed lens camera on the market.

  10. This is priced almost the same or higher than the PL5, the GM1, and the RX100, close to the EM5, the GX7, and the RX10, is almost as big as the EM5, has an 1.7″ sensor, and half the reach of the FZ200. Yes, the lens specifications still sound awesome, but the the total package is still a joke. This is not even marketing-driven, because real marketing presupposes some amount of market research. What is the niche that this camera is supposed to serve? Is it just my idea, or is Oly losing it?

    1. It’s just your idea. It will sell to those it’s aimed at. Not long ago I had a very real need and had to settle for the nikon p7000.

    2. There are obviously different cameras for different market niches. No one can take you seriously if you say that a $799 camera is priced close to a $1299 camera.

  11. A waste of R&D and marketing and production effort.
a Small camera that is not pocketable is not worth having. ( see RX100 )
and it is bigger than cameras with much bigger sensor and capabilities.
I guess it is a good argument towards smartphones killed the P&S.

    1. I don´t agree. Sure, I won´t buy it either but some month ago I suggested a friend to buy the Fuji X20.

He wanted to get a mirrorless cam, couldn´t spend more than 500,- Euro but it should deliver everything: macro, portrait, landscape and architecture.

Told him that this is not possible and he has to spend several hundreds more… except he is willing to settle with an enthusiast p&s.

He is a beginne. So what better to suggest to a guy with a limited budget and without any knowledge about cams.

They offer everything (regarding functions) like the tall brothers and sisters, you can learn how to use it all, aperture, focal distance, iso, … and learn where your preferences lie.

You can even take pretty nice portraits at the long end, supermacros at distance of 1 cm, landscape and architecture at 28mm… summed up, the best compromise for the money.

He is now really into it. He loves his Fuji and is really keen to learn everything about it.

  12. Very nice lightweight package e. g. for climbers, who want to take pictures from wide to decent tele and don’t want to change lenses all the time.

First “superzoom” camera with suitable EVF and no spyhole as in other P&S such as nikon P7800 or Panasonic LF1.

This cam has a lot to like:

+ tiltable LCD touch panel with 1040K dots
    + live view with histogram
+ EVF with 1440K dots and 100% field of view
    + eye sensor

    + fixed bright aperture f2.8
    + focal length 28-300 mm
    + image stabilizer (2-axis)
    + auto lens cap included

+ contrast detection AF with 35 points
    + autofocus illuminator lamp

    + built-in pop-up flash
+ wireless external flash control triggered by built-in flash
    + hot shoe

    + RAW
    + remote control via RM-UC1
    + level gauge (2-axis)
    + built-in ND Filter (3 EV)
    + self timer (2/12/custom)

    + large BLS‑5 Li-Ion battery with 410 shots (CIPA)

BTW, MY WISHLIST FOR THE NEXT ITERATION:

    1) wheather sealing
    2) filter thread (polarising filter)
    3) lens hood (best petal shaped)
    4) tripod socket centered with lens axis
    5) larger buttons (for use with gloves) matt black anodized
    6) 5-axis IBIS 😉
    7) better video performance

    Thx Olympus 🙂

    1. Spoken like a true Olympus salesman. Sorry, but Canon’s G series and Panasonic’s super zoom will keep this camera from selling.
Olympus thought they could be slick by offering a OMD lookalike camera with a rediculous price… hahaha! The jokes on them. This camera should cost no more than $300.00.. .

  13. I’m sorry, I just don’t understand the hate for this camera that I’m reading from some posters. Sure, I wish the new Stylus 1 had weather resistance. But, other than that, this is a nice piece for the travel/bridge camera market.

Sensor technology continues to advance and one can now get very reasonable IQ out of a 1/1.7 sensor. Think: Are all of your vacation and/or travel images fine art – or are they mostly happy snaps? When your family looks back at photos taken from eyars back, are they obsessed with IQ or technical excellence – or do they simply see of great shot someone they love?

It’s time to lighten up. If you don’t like the Stylus 1, then buy something else. I have both DSLR and micro four-thirds systems. But I can see a use for this new camera in my kit – certainly more than the Sony RX10 at twice the price.
