Olympus 12-40mm Lens is “in short supply”. But first lenses are alreayd shipping in US (Amazon and eBay)

Olympus Japan just issued an official statement. It says that the demand of the lens has been higher than expected and therefore not all that preordered the lens will get it in time (late November-early December). The lens has still an ETA of December 7 at Amazon US (Click here). But a couple of 43rumors readers luckily told me that their US preorders already shipped! And there is even a first lens auction on [shoplink 42953 ebay]eBay US (Click here)[/shoplink]. So I guess the supply shortage will only affect those of you that will preorder the lens now.

Preorders: Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, AmazonDE (viaDL), Amazon ES (via DL).

  1. I picked mine up from Bergen County Camera in NJ 2 weeks ago…. I posted here about it. Lovely lens- as heavy as it is u laugh because the whole setup with the e-m1 is probably still lighter than any FF 24-70 kit and thus, more fun to use.

  2. This sucks for people counting on those rebates that won’t have their ship in time.
Keep in mind, your rebate will most likely get rejected if you don’t include a receipt or invoice that says PAID. And places like Amazon, Adorama, etc won’t charge you, and create a receipt, until the item ships.
    Rebate states:
“Enclose a copy of the sales receipt or packaging slip from the lens dated between 9/10/13 and 12/2/13.”

    1. The rebate on my pre-ordered E-M5 was dated from the time of deposit being paid and then they extended the deadline due to the high demand

    2. the rebate should still be fine. the order date is the date they go by, not the ship date. the big risk is whether it will arrive in time to cut the upc and mail before the mail deadline. this is per the rebate form and numerous calls to olympus and b&h

    3. Hopefully my rebate will not be rejected because my E-M1 was purchased at my local camera store on 9/7/2013. I mailed the rebate yesterday. I love the camera and lens.

    4. It would be OK. I sent an email about this same concern to Olympus customer service and they responded that they would still honor the MIR. If in doubt, email them.

  3. Seem to be giving priority to 12-40 kit sales – Amazon UK has these scheduled for availability tomorrow (20th Nov), whilst lens alone is still shown as “1 to 4 months”

  4. So what happens to that rebate offer in the US if you ordered in Nov but got your lens past the Dec. 2 deadline or possibly in January?

          1. Only if they charge your card. You have to have a dated receipt or invoice. No a pre-order confirmation, as these rebate houses love to reject those (especially on rebates that don’t require all UPCs).
So if you don’t get a shipping/billing confirmation, or a dated receipt or packing list by December, 22, your rebate no worky.

  5. I ordered my 12-40mm 3 weeks ago from B&H with EM-1 … but still have not heard any shipping date yet. I think I will wait for a little bit more.

  6. Ordered EM1 and 12-40 from Olympus USA on Nov. 10, body will be here tomorrow, lens “in a few weeks”, but they assured me that it will still be eligible for the rebate even if it arrives after Dec. 2.

  7. Hey folks,
For years I’ve read this blog and rumors, and your concerns about prices being this or dat. Sad, here in BR, we can’t find ANY M43 cam on a regular store, if you want one, you must buy at a local, screwed-up eBay.

Finally I find an almost new, mint condition Oly E-PL5. I have already owned a Pana LX5 and got dissatisfied wit it (ISO past 400 was a total joke, Chroma noise also). I also have 2 C.FD lenses, 28mm 2.8 and 50-1.4, I want to adapt.
Any advices? I also loved the form-factor of GX7, but too distant, too pricey. haha
I feel like pairing it up wit 25-1.4 or 20-1.7 in the future. I heard they did a bad choice over the screen prop., its intended to movies, not pics.

Anyone out there wit concerns, appraises?

    1. DON’T buy a kippon adaptor it’s very bad, a lot of mechanical play…I tried it and was very disapointed by quality. Then, I bought a novoflex, expensive but perfect…

      1. What sort of adapter are you talking about? Ah I see Canon FD, cannot comment on that but I do possess a Kipon OM to u43 shift adapter which is night on perfect, use it with Zuiko 21 and 24mm lenses, for perspective correction and for panoramic shots, not prefect for that but far better than panning the camera as three frames are perfect to overlap and stitch in PS.

  8. Oly has Better build, close focus capability, longer range, manual focus clutch and preset focus pulling.

    Panny is bad.

        1. …but the guys the other day on that page said that the Panny is Purple??? Is that true??? I have never held one in my hand. Purple Panny..Purple Panny…Purple Panny….
I am definitely buying the Oly 12-40mm…….you are clearly getting more for your money…especially if the Panny fluxuates between $900-$1300 in price.

    1. The resolving power of the panny seems to be much better, but they are both great lenses with trade-offs. You do a disservice by calling either of them “bad.”

      1. No No I Own both and resolution is the same, i don’t know where you get the ” MUCH better ” ? Even i’ll say that wide open the Oly is a little bit better. The bokeh is better too. I’m selling the 12-35mm

    1. Don’t agree with you. Oly knew his lens was going t be a niche market. Normal business sense dictates that a low production rate is fine. They probably didn’t produce enough.

  9. I’ve had my 12-40 since Nov 1 from Adorama and I’ve posted that before in the comments on this blog so Admin maybe isn’t following closely.

Anyway clearly there have been very low inventories. Hope others receive their lenses soon. I reviewed the lens on the adorama product page (the quick down and dirty review). There is nothing not to like other than the relatively slow 2.8 f stop. But it’s a zoom and it’s pretty small all things considered. And it has and extra 10mm on the telephoto side so 2.0 wasn’t in the offing.

    1. I had mine from 17st photo NYC since mid october, its just a week after i had my E-M1 .i think i always got the olympus gear earlier than other people here in US,.

i brought along to watched Photo plus expo,.and some of the people asked me ,how did i get the body and lens so early ?,.do i worked for olympus,.?,.

  10. I bought one last week in Bangkok. 34950 baht.
+- 830 euro’s. Including free olympus 62mm uv filter. ( designed for this lens by olympus).

  11. I bought mine about a month ago from Best Buy online and just got it yesterday.

I am not a lens reviewer, and haven’t taken any “real” photos yet, but from playing around with it yesterday on my GH3, I can say that it focuses INSANELY fast. Nearly instantly, and accurately. I have a feeling I’m going to be VERY happy with it.

  12. just received notice from amazon usa that my lens shipped! i ordered mine the day that it was announced and made available for pre-order. looking forward to playing with it and my em5…

  13. Funny that Olympus is always shocked when there is high demand for one of their high-quality products. Guess they’re so used to making boring stuff that nobody likes?

    1. I think Olympus is shocked that so many people are throwing away or selling the inferior Pana 12-35 so they can order Olympus 12-40… LOL

  14. I’ve had mine for a week. Our ‘pro’ store in Seattle was sold out so I called Tall’s and they had both the E-M1 and the 12-40. Grabbed both, then jumped on a plane to Asia. Nice lens.
