We were already certain the E-M1 uses an Epson EVF. Anyway, now it’s official. Epson issued a press release saying the Olympus E-M1 is using their Ultimicron EVF with 2.36 million dot resolution:

Good choice by Olympus.
The Sony A7 ‘s use it too, don’t they?
Imaging Resource says the Sony A7/R EVFs are OLED, similar to the EVF in SLT A99. The Epsons EVFs are LCD.
Ok…Thanks for the info!….I also see now that both the Sony A7r and the M1 viewfinders both have about the same pixel count..
Do you know if one is one better than the other for clarity, color or refresh rate?
i’ve tried A7 today at local photo fair and i had E-M1 5 days for testing and my feeling is that E-M1 EVF has better colors out of the box on factory settings than A7 EVF, also feels a bit larger. maybe A7 EVF can be adjusted through camera settings but i didn’t have the chance to do that today at Sony stand at the photo fair
Thanks for the input…I have the VF4 on my E-P5 and the viewfinder is quite a step up from the EM 5…which I thought was fine …until I started using this! The tech is getting really good. I actually prefer shooting with an EVF than optically.
@admin,what is EVF-Producer that use in GX7 ?,
native size 16:9 when use 4:3 it ‘s too small
but resolution is good 2.7Mdot
No EVF no buy!
Err.. I meant not pocketable EVF NO BUY! And it has to be cheap! And and..
Sony sensor +
Epson EVF +
Sigma made glass +
corporate fraud =
OilyLimpPuss fail
(do they design any of it?)
(perhaps they designed the battery compartment lol)
yeah, they know nothing about design. their cameras are only good as door stoppers or better still, missiles to throw at rabid oly fanboys
“OilyLimpPuss” aren’t you a clever boy, did you think of that all by yourself?
If that is the extent of your creativity – you should strongly consider cutting your wrists – remember its up the street, not across the road.
Brutally funny!
Makes for a good laugh 🙂 That troll just got owned
Sony sensor >> Pana sensor
Epson EVF >> Pana EVF
Sigma and Oly ZD glass > Pana glass
Oly color >>> Pana ugliest color
go cry to your mother you want a cheap Pana toy, LOL!
Still think that Olympus/Epson would’ve been a good merger.

The two together have no overlap but a lot of synergy.
Admin, you mentioned a cashback of 200 USD – but that is for US residents only…!!
The body alone is sold by Amazon USA for 1399$, in Europe we have to pay 1499€ (= 2000$), almost 50% more!!
Will there be a cashback in Europe too?
We would need it much more – I would propose at least 300€…;-)
No. Buy it and shut up.
If you come to your senses, Canons and Nikons are better and cheaper, pretty much all of them.
The cashback is if you purchase the E-M1 and 12-40 2.8 lens separately, which makes it the same price if you purchased the kit. The reason is that they are not selling the kits in the US. I understand that they are selling the kits in the UK.
Sorry, I meant Europe, not UK.
Ah, ok, thank you!
In other words, in Europe the cashback is included in the set (2200€).
I am in the same boat as you. I really like the E-M1. I would by it in a heartbeat at the US prices. But the local prices are ridiculously high.
Olympus local is selling it for 1,670 EUR for body only!!! That is 2,280 USD just for the body.
Would you guys buy this camera at these prices?
I am sure that no hobby/enthusiast would spend this much money on an m43 camera.
That sucks. Are other cameras marked up that much? How about Panasonic’s offerings?
It was very good, especially with sunglasses. It beats my Panasonic GH3 EVF easily. I always find a bad angle, especially when wearing sunglasses, and I see nothing in the EVF. Of course, using it more than a couple of hours may prove differently.
stop trolling mate. there is no way olympus is better. Even the GH1 vf beats the all oly vf by miles. typical oly fanboy saying otherwise
A troll saying “stop trolling”… That is very funny.
Very funny. I don’t even have an Olympus camera with an EVF.
