New SH-1 is the first worldwide compact camera with 5 axis on sensor IS for stills and images.

P.S.: I don’t know where you can have that sexy leather case for the new SH-1.

The first PEN looking compact camera has one unique feature: It’s the first camera with a 5 axis on sensor stabilization. Combine this with the super 25-600mm zoom range and you will have a great combination! A nice introduction of the camera with specs, video and images of the camera can be seen at GetOlympus (Click here). 1. So, the SH-50 has 3-axis mechanical. It does the other 2 for video only digitally by cropping in the sensor and shifting the image.

    2. In fact, the info on SH-50 is not so much clear. Yes, for still it was only 3-axis; 5-axis is for video, but the specs are not clear about how it is (I’ve searched a bit). Could really be as Andrew said (3-axis mechanical plus digitally crop – like the E-M10 in video mode, in fact), or could be 5-axis mechanical (in some press releases Olympus even said “A first for point-and-shoot cameras, its 24x optical zoom lens (25-600mm equivalent)* combines with an advanced image stabilization mechanism, originally developed for the Olympus OM-D E-M5 flagship interchangeable lens camera, to compensate for image blur in all situations regardless of the scene. ”

Beacuse of the E-M5 reference, I supposed that the IBIS was the same in the SH-50 (but somehow disabled for stills).

And to correct myself, the LCD is not worse, it have the same resolution of the SH-50, 460k – I’ve read a wrong info in another site saying that the SH-50 had an 960k lcd.

  1. How about the Casio ZR800/ZR1200 compact superzooms? I thought they had the first 5-axis IS on compacts?

      1. So it is like when they claimed the E-P3 had the fastest autofocus? :p
(Don’t get me wrong. I like Olympus. But I’d like to be fair.)

        1. OK, I see how this 5-axis IS is different from the other 5-axis IS now. The Casios only claim to have a abysmal 2.5 stop advantage (or is it 1.5? I can’t remember) so I knew there must be some “cheating” involved. I’ve seen how good the “real” 5-axis IS is on the OMDs and the E-P5. It’s truly scary to think they’ve managed that kind of stability for a theoretically inferior sensor-based IS (in theory, in-lens IS is always better, I presume?)

        2. Olympus have been claiming fastest ever AF since the E3 LOL, It usually boils down to one very specific scenario shooting one specific lens and just as with all the mFT models it was never related to C-AF or tracking Olympus lagged behind other DSLRs in FT and still lags behind DSLRs in mFT. There are very few cameras from the cheapest on the market p&s that cannot do decent s-af .

  2. This would be my dream camera. An Olympus compact with a 1″ sensor, 24-85 mm f2.8 lens, 5 axis stabilization for video, mic and headphone jacks, full manual control for video, at least be able to shoot 24/60p, have it be no bigger than the Stylus 1 and be capable of shooting great video, priced at $599.

  3. Umm, the SH-1 is just a tarted up SH-50. A quick glance shows, it has wi-fi support, and now 5 axis IS for stills (SH-50 had 3 axis for stills, 5 axis for video). You can now do 1080 60p video instead of 1080 30p or 1080 60i. It adds the new interval timer support. Lens has the same specs, f/3.0-6.3. Sensor is 16 megapixels and 1/2.3″ size. It has a faux leather grip, and the price is $50 (US) than the current SH-50. The battery is now the LI-92B instead of LI-90B.

    1. Why are people so thick? The SH-50 didn’t have 5 axis mechanical. The last two axes were done digitally for video by further cropping the sensor and digitally shifting the image.

The Panasonic models used optical stabilization. So yes, it is a first.

  4. As others have already pointed out this SH1 is not the first to have 5 axis IS in a compact camera,, and has one should consider the Pany ZS40 or TZ60 which has a reportedly excellent 5 axis OIS rock solid even at max 720mm range. The ZS40 in addition has a small EVF, LCD screen is 920,000 dot resolution, offers GPS, and even RAW.

        1. From the press release: “*2 Optical image stabilization is defined by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) guidelines and includes sensor-shift image stabilization.”

      1. The quote from the news release says optical IS.

“3. The world’s first*1 optical*2 5-axis image stabilisation compatible with both still images and movies”

    1. So the Panasonics have a different hybrid system. They use some sensor shift and some OIS to get what they call 5-axis stabilization. The difference with this Olympus is that it does all 5 on the sensor. And yes, again, this is different from the SH-50 which did 3 on the sensor and 2 digitally for video only.

  5. No really a breakthough .
I would prefer if the sensor can be a bit bigger .
Nowadays APSC cemeras become cheaper , look at NEX 3 & A5000 .
    M4/3 cameras become expensive .
    I’m shock to learn A6000 cost less than GX7 & EP5 (body only) .
Wondering what is going on now ?
Where is NEX 7 resale value ???

    1. I agree I love M43. But lenses and bodies are expensive. Sony seems to be competing on price and rightly so as Fuji and M43’s have some nice gear. Sony has failed in lenses and I think that is why so many have turned to M43 and Fuji. Of course also the horrible NEX menu and lack of manual controls but they are trying to improve but still no IBIS and no Touch LCD except NEX5

    2. The Stylus 1 has the slightly bigger sensor, 1/1.7″ & a constant bright(ish) f2.8 lens too with a 10.7 X zoom in the style of the OM-D.

  6. I saw what the admin here: omit sensor size info in article header (twice!) for clickbait 😛

SmallSensorRumors would be a better place for such news 😉

  7. That sensor is only negligibly larger than that of many a smart phone. Add IS all you want, but if you don’t build more desirable core elements into the camera, you’re not going to get the people who still buy compacts, to buy this one.

  8. stuff changes fast, 2 newsposts below is was:
The world’s first optical*5 axis image stabilisation compatible with both still images and movies
    now its sensor is :S

    1. No. It was 5 axis stabilization. Than people started to complain (you know those people that always want to say soemthing). And I added “on sensor” to quite them down 🙂

      1. Doesn’t matter anyway. It’s a compact, not MFT, and it’s another silly “worlds first” claim. The best thing you can do is delete the item completely.

  9. Dear Olympus,
Your cameras are awesome. They’re the most interesting thing on the market right now and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Keep it up!!!

  10. Very nice looks. Nice focal length. I would have put the sensor and lens from Stylus1 in the SH1. Lens to slow.

  11. The lens and given aperture makes no sense and it’s too bad for everyone. Unnecessary long and painfully slow zooms still remain the achilles’ heel of compact digital cameras. Olympus should have just put a good, normal prime on this thing, or simply a shorter zoom with a practical, constant aperture. I can almost promise that no one is going to take a picture with this thing at 600m f/7 and get a shot worth saving.

    1. totally agree – why not the lens they put in the Stylus 1 – 28-300 F2.8 – and yes also the tiny bit larger sensor – 600mm is so long that it becomes so hard to hand-hold and also just to much atmospheric haze for such a small sensor – so the 28-300 F2.8 makes a lot more sense –
so now we do not hear that much about Mega Pixels but X X Zooooom 🙂 is the rave now –
I have the Sony HX50v which has a tiny bit faster lens at 600mm at 6.3 and certainly does not looks as nice and has a so so Sony menu system and no Touch LCD etc. for about the same price – I would have gotten this Olympus for looks and menu system and Touch LCD with Touch To Focus but as I also got the Stylus 1 with a faster lens and larger sensor I will pass

    1. They don’t get it wrong. It’s 5 of the singular. It’s correct to say that “5-axis stabilization stabilizes all 5 axes”. Let’s replace “axis” with “dog” to illustrate. You would say that “5-dog stabilization stabilizes all 5 dogs”. Let’s use person/people and house now. “A 2-person house holds 2 people”. You wouldn’t say “2-people house”. You could instead say “a house that hold 2 people”, but it would then be a “2-person house”.

      You get the idea.

    2. “Plural of axis is axes. It must be 5-axes. Why Oly and everyone else get wrong?”
      1) see Andrew’s reply
      2) “It should be 5-axes”, not “it must be 5-axes”.
      3) “Why Oly and everyone else get it wrong?”, not “Why Oly and everyone else get wrong?”.

  12. Another toy without manual controls, a dark lens and a hefty price. 400 USD should be the price of an OMD! The folks at Olympus have no clue and they are sinking the boat fast.
