(FT5) First High End OMD test report.

I got two short feedbacks from trusted sources who were able to test the new OMD. There are two things to report:

1) AF has been reported to be very fast, reliable and accurate with Four Thirds lenses. It’s on the same level as “native” MFT lenses. This is possible because of the new on sensor PDAF

2) IQ, DR and noise is only slightly better than current OMD sensor. (Thanks to new processor and some other “tweaks”).

One more thing: The camera will ship worldwide from end November!

  1. Gaudeamus!

Good catch Admin! At least know we know that it is PDAF-on-sensor. So:

    – better CAF

    – hike in the ebay prices for 4/3 lenses. 🙂

    Is the E-7 project discontinued?

          1. and you are an idiot. If what you say is true all you are doing is giving publicity to his views.

          2. All I know is that this forum is a much better place without this amalric jackass. Admin…can you please ban this guy…give us all a break?

          3. You are also not the solution. At least amalric is under therapy by the Forum physicians.

      1. based on
“IQ, DR and noise is only slightly better than current OMD sensor. (Thanks to new processor and some other “tweaks”).”

        and

        http://www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lumix-gx7-vs-olympus-om-d-e-m5-comparison-review-22646?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Ephotozine+(ePHOTOzine)

i.e. GX7 has similar ISO performance as OMD (GX7 beats OMD on high ISO – 12800/25600) and OMD Pro is slightly better then OMD (probably using the same sensor but treaking JPEG engine, otherwise they will say it has a new sensor)

        1. As far as I understand, these tests were based on JPEGs from a pre-production GX7. It wouldn’t be surprising if the final verdict concerning the GX7’s capabilities would turn out somewhat different.

          1. It wouldn’t be surprising if the final GX7 performs quite different than the one with a not final firmware? So you’re convinced that Panasonic gave out samples for initial testing which perform considerably different to the final product?
I don’t disagree with being careful about judging the final product by a not final version, but these samples should be pretty close to final.
Just because the firmware is v0.2 or v0.3 it doesn’t mean that Panasonic will for sure make 7-8 more substantial improvements, they might skip a few numbers if everything is ready and tested out.

    1. I bet the jpeg and the RAW files look better (as usual) out of the Olympus. …for that matter I prefer my OMD files to what jpegs and RAWs I have seen out of the GX7 so far. Sand but true. We need a good review, though…not a bunch of hype from Panny sponsors etc…to be sure …but that is the way it looks to me, so far. I am not a Oly fanboy either, I owned a GF1, GF5 and still own a GX1..which has a nice form factor.. I like that….but the images out of the Oly put it to shame. Just calling it the way I see it.

      1. you still can’t see good review gx7 don’t use final firmware
i wonder test of raw gx7 have better number of noise than EM-5 / EPL 5 but your eyes seen that worse

    1. What shall we do?

      Wait.

Be patient for confirmed specifications, prices, availability, etc.

If you need distractions to help you be patient, grab a camera and a couple of lenses and go make some images. If you do it right, the new camera will be here before you notice.

      😉

  2. Would not mind having a tough little body to go with my 12-60 50-200 swds, my usage is travel/holiday and light but tough is a bonus.
And i do not mind using evil, would love a tilting one like the panny, but weatherprotection and most important pdaf/caf realy working with a 43 lens.

Since my next trip could take a while i might wait a bit

  3. Thank you admin. Just what I was hoping to hear. All I miss in the E-M5 is PDAF. IQ? I stopped worrying about it long ago. It’s just good enough for my needs.

  4. Ahhhhh… “only slightly better”. Sounds to me as if we are all being set up for a bit of a disappointment about the sensor.

    1. Considering that the current sensor is superb in real world use I am not going to hold my breath for a new sensor from anyone.
Shoot pictures and stop glaring at your screen at 1600%.

      1. To be honest, I look at the screen in Aperture or Lightroom at standard sizes and see grain at all ISO ranges (obviously getting worse at higher ISO’s). That is why I dumped the OM-D. You don’t have to pixel peep to notice that its average when compared to FF.

        1. Thats true. I often notice that to. But i didnt dump mine.
It will take more Than one gen Progress to get rid of noise have super clean low isos.

        2. Get a better screen or pair of eyes. I use a Macbook Pro with Retina screen and don’t see what you are reporting.

          1. You can ridicule people all you want in the safety of the net, however I have 20/20 vision and I have multiple macs with Retina display. I am sorry if I notice grain on OMD images. I notice the grain on every image I see that was taken with these small cameras all over the net. I am sorry that I can see imperfections quite clearly that you cannot. I don’t mind seeing grain on certain images, but when you do want an absolutely clean file, it cannot produce it. Try this, take a shot on a clear sky day with the sun behind you. Now, switch to black and white and play with detail. The errors that pop up just don’t show up on D700 or D800 (I am sure most full frame cameras) images. You don’t have to attack someone for seeing problems.
I am sick to death of this mediocre, it’s good enough attitude. No wonder our pop culture is falling to bits. Just insult me more. Go on. You will feel better.

          2. Once you go oversharpen a d800 image it also looks uggly, same for a d4, 5dmk3, 1dx, d600, 6d and all others. Different? Possibly, more to your liking? Posdibly and entirely your thing, but if you are so sick of a ‘good enough’ attitude, wtf are you doing here, and why are you looking at tiny 135 format sensors, go get yourself a pentax 645, leica s or large format back. You don’t? Then you have the exact same ‘good enough’ attitude, and the entire attitude you are showing is just stupid.

        3. “You don’t have to pixel peep to notice that its average when compared to FF.”

Well, I would surely hope that a Full Frame DSLR would show a significant difference. For the size, weight and cost difference, it better. Olympus is not challenging Full Frame at all. Nor is there any intention for it to. But average then would mean it does compete successfully with APS-c since that is the “average” standard.

It is silly comparing two such dramatically different sizes. Same silliness the world went through when 35mm film first appeared, and the so called Pro’s argued it would never compete with their medium format and “4X5 Speed Graphics”. At least they argued that until journalists and their 35mm’s delivered images that the world loved. Images that changed the way we saw the world. No body cared about the image grain quality difference, they cared about the images themselves, and the stories they told.

In the end it is always the photographer and not the camera that makes the image. And there are different cameras for different purposes and end uses. They are just tools. Each has its place.

        4. You must have some magical full frame camera. I own a Canon 6D and an E-P5, and at ISO 1600 or lower the E-P5 wipes the floor with the Canon.

          1. meaningless
what you were supposed to be doing was looking at ISO 1600 FF
            and ISO 400 m43rds
if you are going to have a mantra for BS, you might as well get it right
            no need to thank me

        5. Of course a new FF is better in IQ, no doubt. Remember most m43 users want to compromise to some extent on IQ but they do not want to pay a hefty weight price. To others, that weight is just fine and they can fgo for a FF. No problem, glad we can choose.

          1. It appears that YOU are the NOISY person. I didn’t INSULT ANYONE? However, because I notice some flaws in a camera that you don’t upsets you enough to speak up and insult me. Great. You made me change my mind and think that the OMD is up to the performance of a full frame camera. GOD. I want small just like everyone else. I clearly stated that. But for professional work, it is not ready yet. If you have a logical argument, put it forward. OR, just show us your exceptional images.

          2. Your entire way of commenting, talking about ‘good enough’ attitude (which you have as well else you’d be shooting medium/large format) and how you get sick of it shows it all. Go learn to express your opinion without implicit insults someday.

  5. So far this ¨hybrid¨ camera gets a lot of positive attention.

Personally I am doubting the use of a small body with very large 4/3 lenses, because there goes ¨portability¨…

    1. I’m worried about that too. Even if they do a larger body, i doubt it would be as large as the E-30 even… and then there’s the issue of balance.

    2. its all good – You can use m43 for portability and 43 for performance! – it wont be hard to shoot with big lenses – I find no problems with FF 35mm lenses on my EP1…

  6. Really good, so now I can use my 4/3 and my m4/3 lenses on the same camera. I have learnt to like the EVF on my EM-5, but I hope this one has the VF4 tech.

    1. It will have wifi so you should be able to control and view photos on your tablet. I am guessing the next version of Olympus app for mobile devices will allow full control of the camera from the mobile device. The current version only allows the camera to be in i-auto mode.

  7. Pity this will only be available starting in late November — but it sounds like on-sensor PDAF (and with it, full 4/3 lens support) is this gadget’s claim to fame. So, sports / action shooters will want an early copy while the rest of us can wait a bit.

Admin — any news about the high-end lens that was rumored to come along with this camera?

    1. How would that possibly work in your opinion? They’ll be bitten by a radioactive spider to acquire superpowers or..

    2. Well, that’s body’s responsable to make PDAF work with M4/3 lens, but that’s depends Olympus ‘s will, to to not to.

    3. No reason they could not use a hybrid AF for m434 lenses – i.e. PDAF to tell the camera where abouts to focus the lens then use CDAF to hone in the last bit of sharpness – would have potential to be faster then just pure CDAF (and still keep the accuracy of CDAF)

      1. Yes, if the firmware is upto to the task of using both the PDAF and CDAF information the AF system just might be the best of any camera. The speed of the PDAF because it knows the distance and the accuracy of CDAF. Plus the intellence of face/eye detection. Then again it usually takes couple of versions of the hardware and firmware to get perfection. Still with it has AF speed with FT lenses equal to the E-5 then it should be good enough. I am thinking how nice the 90-250 f2.8 lens would be for wildlife and bird photography.

    4. pdAF is just multiple data sets to determine focus position
all lenses will use pdAF unless you assign cdAF
      hence
if m43rds were fast before, they will be even faster now
and potentially they are among the fastest focussing lenses of all (any format)
this because of their inherent fast focus qualities and linear focus motor actuators

the problem for 43rds lenses was they lacked those qualities
therefore they didnt shunt focus very well as they are slow to respond
pdAF puts these 43rds lenses back to as they would be on an SLR
but probably more accurate, as they wont have indexing issues

  8. Eh. Olympus sold its kingdom for a dish of old mastodontic lenses lost in some warehouse somewhere.. sic (Olympus = Esau who sold his birth-right for a dish of pottage).
    Sic.

      1. Uh oh… double dose is not working anymore. Going to fall back on therapist advice and recommend institutionalization. He is all yours, colleague!

    1. Yep – so far the camera sounds excelent but it would be let down by poor video options!
      Should support:
      640×480 60p, 60i, 30p
      768×576 50p, 50i, 25p
      720 & 1080@ 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p.
      720 & 1080@ 60i, 50i.
      AVCHD and MPG4 @ 17Mbit, 21Mbit, 28Mbit, 36Mbit, 48Mbit.

Would also love to see (to make this cover all the visual requirments you may need):
      1080 @ 120fps
      720@ 240fps
      640×480 & 768×576 @ 960fps

And finaly a proper intavalometer so timelapse is fully catered for – frame numbers from 1 – 9999 (+ infinate frame option) and interval from 0.5sec to 24hrs

These additions would cover all the forms of image capture required by anyone… all in one device. – and none of this is beyond achivable with current technology levels!

  9. Only ‘a little better’ quality ??????
And they call this a ‘high end’ ????
Should I wait for the OMD EM-6 ???
What to do. What to do !!!!

      1. i’m downsizing from my d7000. I dont want a huge heavy lens that FF will probably require.. defeats my purpose… i’d be happy with any present OMD, but i dont mind waiting for a decent bump in technology which might happen if a ‘new improved sony sensor’ is unleashed in 2014.. if i can hold my breath that long.

    1. sorry, iq of the E-M5 sensor is good enough. next big step in sensor technology will maybe be the new organic sensors (maybe). until then, new sensors will be maybe a few percents better then the old ones, not more.

      1. so if i’m not into 4/3 lenses, then maybe the EM1 is overkilll ? better to stay with the EM5 and save $500 or more ?

        1. That would rather depend on what features a ne om-d pro has over the e-m5, and how bad you need those features.

    1. “Good news for my ZD 7-14, 14-54, 25/1.4, 50/2, 50/200”
That 50/2 sounds good, but wouldn’t you have major diffraction and more importantly light gathering problems with a 50/200. 😉 (Just kidding.)

  10. “It’s on the same level as “native” MFT lenses”… Does it mean that tracking AF sucks (on the same level as native MFT)?

  11. “AF has been reported to be very fast, reliable and accurate with Four Thirds lenses.” Excellent! That will hopefully appear in lower end models as well.

    1. I wouldn’t count on it. Olympus has been working on this for the last five years. This feature might be reserved for high end only for a while.

      1. I wouldnt think it would take that long
I think it more natural for pdAF sensors to be installed on upgraded cameras are they become due. But thats just what I think

  12. IQ & DR are slightly better than OMD means no true breakthrough in sensor tech considering the OMD is already around 2 years old .
Thanks , I know what to get .
The GX7 fit me better .

          1. Yes ! When gx7 arrive here I will go and laugh when two months after you start seeing then in the second hand shop I was yesterday there already two gh3 and lots 12-35 -35-100. And lots of m43 models I think many ppl buy and sell quickly cuz they are use the dslrs ..mostly girls in auto mode ^_^

          2. You saw 2 GH3s about 9 months after release? and you call that bad?? How bout the 600$ discount the 5d mk3 got not even 3 months in the market? what do you call that?

          3. And the EOS M that is sold for less than 1/3 of it’s introduction price. At that rate you will probably soon get a free EOS M when you buy a box of cornflakes.

      1. And your camera has a sensor so old and primitive that has been designed by the Lumiere brothers! In your face!

    1. I won’t be able to justify buying this OM-D (to my wife), but I am hoping a better telephoto zoom lens comes for M4/3’s (for my E-M5). Then again, 4/3’s lenses might be what they only want to offer in the longer bright lenses.

      1. If it is really true that you cannot build a 150mm or 300mm F2.8 lens significantly smaller than those 43 lenses why should they bother. But I understand you point. 😉
Actually I have an even more unrealistic wish: a kit with Oly E-M5 and the Pana 14-140 II. Buying them seperately will be 1500€ and I will definitely go for the G6 kit instead. 😀

    2. But the “new” Panasonic GX7 sensor is not performing as good as the “old” Olympus/Sony sensor! So what good is “new” in this case?

      1. I have to laugh! One person’s going to buy the GX-7 because the new OM doesn’t have a “new” sensor, even though we don’t really know how the GX-7 sensor will perform. Another says the GX-7 sensor isn’t as good as the OM-D’s, but we don’t know that yet, either. Yet another says the GX uses a tweaked GH2 sensor, when a simple comparison of sensor specs will show this isn’t the case.

It would appear the world’s educational institutions have completely failed at teaching the skills of reading comprehension, analysis, and logic.

What a joke these comments threads have become.

      2. Huh? There are no tests done yet, wtf are you talking about? Iso test photos look slightly better even from those pre-production models. But have to wait for dxo to directly compare them.

    3. I got my silver OMD-Em5 on May 2012, it was the first silver copy to arrive in Italy. Less than 2 years old then.

  13. Bottom line: The “High-End OM-D” will not be very interesting for those of us NOT having old FT glass.

    1. I have a E-M5 and no FT lenses. Still if the new OMD-Pro has solved the C-AF and tracking issues and can use the FT lenses at their full potential I can see myself buying a few of them. The FT lenses at leat the HQ and SHQ lenses have no equal. Plus once you get into the telephoto range there is really no difference in size. I can see myself buying the 90-250 f2.8 for wildlife photography. The 70-300 is ok but it is just way too slow for wildlife at dawn and dusk.

  14. Admin, was there any detail about the mount/adapter? It’s getting more likely that it will be a standard solution, and the sensor being the component to fullfill the OBS concept. Could this mean that future lower end models, even PEN’s, will be equipped with such sensor? So the whole future line-up being able to embrace the FT lenses 100% just by using the standard MFT/FT adapter.

          1. Yes, it would, but on the other hand Panasonic just closed the gap a little by switching to sensor based stabilization…

      1. If I remember correctly, the MMF-3 has a plastic barrel, and maybe the MMF-4(?) will be more solid using a metal barrel. Yes, it makes sense to me that in a year or two, the whole MFT system will be one with its ancester system. Maybe it will be renamed as the Olympus OBS System.

          1. These are the facts of life. Panny has only a few 4/3 lenses, while Oly has 30 of them, and is aiming at selling them out entirely.

Moreover if it is PDAF-on-sensor it’s likely to be Sony technology. Hopefully it will give an edge for CAF (tracking is more a matter of processing speed).

These are competitive advantages which are not easily shared.

          2. anyone that thinks a company stores lenses for years on end is on drugs
inventory management is like 40% of costs
they wont make what they dont need, because they simply cant store it too long

          3. Calm down, we have excellent therapists down here 🙂

There was this interesting snippet about Oly calling all reps to send back their display units, so they really want to sell everything, and begin the next stage.

Thath’s probably the meaning of the introduction in September of the new fast (?) zoom. PDAF-on-sensor of course improves AF on NEW lenses too.

          4. Am. – You are starting to make sense. The Forum therapy seems to be working. Keep taking your meds.

          5. yeah.. you would think by the accounts of some fans, that Oly’s big business strategy to save the camera division it so push a huge stockpile of 4/3 lenses. Haha.

          6. why? So they can sit on shelves too? They didn’t sell when 4/3 cameras were being released, and they wont sell now when a single niche model may support them.

          7. Yes, Panasonic dropped from 4/3 before it had the chance to make many lenses (although the ones it made are excellent), but that does not mean that it should not adopt on-sensor PDAF. On the contrary, this technology should give 4/3 lens owners a valid alternative. Some of them won’t be very keen on buying another Olympus. Besides, I believe PDAF has the potential to expand the photographic applications of m4/3 glass as well as 4/3 glass.
Panasonic has just embraced IBIS, so why not be part of the OBS celebration?

          8. Hopefully it will work better than the on-sensor C-AF in Sony’s A99. That camera still relies on the separate PDAF sensors for most purposes, because the on-chip PDAF simply isn’t fast enough.

      2. S*cking new adapter — and we will for sure have to pay again sth like 200 bucks. Hopefully it hast more metal than the MMF-3

      3. The adapter is surely included with the body. A seperate buy would result in lots of negative comments(this time with a good reason imho).

          1. This is Oly we are talking about here.
in the UK, perhaps complimentary… in the USA… $299 for the final piece to that “one beautiful system”

      1. I have a hacked GH2, a GH3, a pre-order on the new BMPC and badly want an OMD with 5-axis ibis and PRO video codecs for my video production work!! What’s the matter with this??!?

  15. Such a pity it is only coming at the end of november. I hoped the camera would be available before my holidays this autumn. Now I fear, that there will be one more big journey for the E-3 (although I crave for more DR and less noise).

    1. I feel the pain of early adopters; I was considering the OMD pro for an upcoming 3 day project in Jakarta end of oktober , but besides the november shipping, I already have a hard time to arrange the budget for the ticket:-)

      1. I would not consider myself to be an early adopter. I tend to use things as long as possible (I have had E-3 for several years now). However, on this particular journey, a camera with higher DR and lower noise would be extremely useful. For example, I would like to take pictures by night with stars in the sky, for which I need clean ISO 1600 (or at least ISO 800). That’s something my E-3 does not offer. Taking pictures of stars in the sky is something I can only do on holidays, as we don’t have lots of them here in over-populated Germany…

  16. Cool I will hang onto my Leica 14-150mm that I have been using on my GH2. Amazing lens. If this new OMD does 60p and is not massive in size, then Olympus will get my $$$

  17. Oh, NO! Only slightly better IQ! The sky is falling!

(Let’s ignore the fact that the OM-D and GH3 already produce excellent images, and start complaining about a camera that isn’t even available yet. When this is released, the hype and whining is going to be deafening.

I’ve got a clue for you all: no new camera will make you a better photographer.

    1. But new gear will likely push us to go out, take photos, and improve! 🙂 I know I’m just trying to ignore GAS.. (November: there’s time to see the new NEX FF and decide where to put money)

    2. And suddenly that “ancient” E-M5 sensor isn’t any good any more. This is the kind of nonsense we continue to endure from many on this forum – the non-photographers.

  18. “IQ, DR and noise is only slightly better than current OMD sensor. (Thanks to new processor and some other “tweaks”).”

I am amazed at how few posts there are about how Oly are a crazy company (bordering on idiocy) for putting old sensors into new cameras. And how they are gong to sell their MFT cameras and by CaNikon. Or are such comments reserved only for Panasonic cameras?

    1. You’re being selective. Oly has gotten its fair share until they switched from Pany to Sony for the E-M5 sensor.

Sensor specs are one of the first things forum warriors learn to “discuss”. Remember that many here are respectable but rather simple consumers that demand simple messages (from their peers, the companies they buy from, and their governments).

  19. Admin – any other info on the PDAF? Is it there as a ‘focus assist’ function, or does it offer a focus tracking closer the that achieved with DSLRs?

  20. Hahaha…..just slightly better then em5. So still small size blurry photos with body good lens combo At 2000 euro. This is just pathetic. I feel sorry for m43/43 users. Nobody i say nobody exept fangirls is going to buy this.

        1. Aaah…you just said that to the wrong person. Unlike 90% of people out there, I print A LOT. Ive p6rinted in m43s, aps c and aps h. From a4 to 60×40. All things being equal Aps c always ends up being the softest

    1. Another one-system believer. Misinformed friend, buying into a system does not mean adhering to the strict precepts of some exclusive religion (or is it? Maybe it’s me). It’s just another option. And most people here know when to leave their APS-C, FF or MF gear at home. And most here know how to operate a camera, any camera. Go practice.

  21. Great rumor about AF, I hope it’s true.
I hope Panasonic will use PDAF on sensor too for the next GH, as they are better suited than OM-D for 4/3 lenses.

DR slightly better than OM-D/GH3? Who cares, it’s already excellent, more than most people need!

  22. Meanwhile, as predicted, 4/3 forum at DPR is undergoing meltdown:

“My E-5 , E-30 , E-30 and E-510 does not just evaporate over night. Neither do my 15 4/3 lenses. People have been trying to exterminate this forum for years , be it other brands , Olympus itself with leaving us dying on the vine , or the m4/3 converts and m4/3 users either bashing away at the old brigade of bombarding us with propaganda.

Giving the choice of 1041 or drinking sulfuric acid , the acid could be a option. But self preservation would probably say no and I would walk by 1041 on my way to the Nikon forum.”

Said one Collbaxter, drama queen, and Safari owner. And then again, on the dissolution of the forum:

“Art the outcome at 1041 would be a pre ordained conclusion. It appears that some people (The ones with the big mouths) want to burn 4/3 users as heretics. You get that with splinter religions s well. Voting on that site would go along general pre described requirements small , light wight and cheap (affordable) . Some would be to scared to vote against the m4/3 bible due to victimization. We don’t have that problem as we have nothing to lose.”

I foresee further siege mentality and final Meltdown 🙂

    1. > I foresee further siege mentality and final Meltdown 🙂

      Well, why meltdown?

If as rumored, the body support the FT lenses, then it is a FT body too. However it is implemented.

      1. Those geniuses were so blind to rename a year ago the ‘4/3 forum’ the ‘4/3 dSLR forum’ to keep out m4/3 users, never predicting that a hybrid camera would put them out of business.

With the new OM-D who would buy or build another 4/3 dSLR?

So now, by the own doing of those intolerant thugs, the 1022, an old and once honourable forum, now faces sudden extinction.

          1. You need to know that he was banned by those guys, you know.
That’s why he’s obsessed with that forum and the bashing of 43 gear.

(Let me end now with a preaching sentence, slightly unsettling and baffling in its own way:) There’s always a reason for mental conditions and self-destructive behaviors.

    2. Olympus themselves could sign up and straight out post in Olympus logo font on that forum “We stopped production and development on 4/3 4 years ago. There have not been and will not be any more lenses, bodies, accessories, or anything. Buy a m4/3 camera.”

And they would be called a troll by 40 or so people, and banned by that childish moderator. And then that topic would disappear within seconds under a flood of new topics speculating on the E7, and stating how the Tweaked sensor of the E5 beats any full-frame DSLR.

It’s cute that they are all clueless Oly nerds, but they are jerks to anyone talking about the state of the platform truthfully, and they are complete douches for offering buying advice to honest people there. “Oh, don’t buy that new Nikon, just wait for the E7, it’s due out any second now and 5 more lenses too.”

Those DPReview 4/3 SLR people need to all shut up and stick to the on thing they are good at: Photos of their cats.

      1. Exactly so. in fact I remember being told a long time ago about an internal strife at the Olympus board between the defenders of mirrorless and those of dSLR.

It seems clear to me who won. But Olympus itself has much prolonged the agony, which is now coming to an end. Unfortunately to say the evidence means being banned in some parts.

If people think to build a system on the basis of 4/3 they will do so at their own risk. Those lenses and their parts have probably been stopped being made 4 or 5 yrs. ago. Once the stocks are finished, the system is gone.

  23. The 12-60 lens will finally function correctly in Live View.

Such an amazing oversight when it was released in 2007 alongside the E3, a camera that was supposed to excel in Live View (compared to its peers)

  24. I did drop my old Olympus and my set of lenses last year. Did switch totally to the OMD. Did not regret at all my decision. Size, weight, iq, sensor cover my needs. I would like to remind everyone that before bitching for even better, improved, greater performance for this and that, it still is the photographer that is key. So start working on your skills first!

  25. IQ is way better than E-M5 and E-P5.

PDAF on sensor with 4/3 lenses works like a treat.

It will be a dream camera for many.

    1. Thanks!! I was already thinking on Sony…

I like & want Olympus, even don’t know wich lenses I shall take.

    2. I heard that as well. Admin is under selling this a little but that’s a good thing. Better than building it up and people being disappointed.

I think the sensor is new and megapixels are higher, like18 or 20.

  26. >> Yet another says the GX uses a tweaked GH2 sensor, when a simple comparison of sensor specs will show this isn’t the case.

    Are you sure? Prove it!

    1. Not even the pixel size is the same. The sensor was stated as new with bigger photodiodes. whats your proof?

          1. I thought most people don’t care about puny onboard flash
I don’t hear many Canon FF owner complain about that

          2. The onboard flashes are in the E3 & E5 but it is really only useful as commander for pro use & that is when the small clip on one can be used or else the FL600 (& I think the FL300 too) can be used as a commander too & that can be used to trigger the FL50R (& FL36R) flashes.

    1. So it’s a tiny camera?

It won’t sell. Totally uninteresting to most 4/3 owners due to faulty ergonomics and size and weight issues.

Hopefully the E-7 will be released too.

    2. “House is OMD style. Slightly larger grip. No onboard flash. Cheers”

Thanks!! That sounds much more interesting than a E-1/E-3/E-5 style body. Though price I’m sure would be prohibitive to me.

  27. I wonder !!! 😉
-why we need an new adapter on OM-D Pro if this camera have PDAF on sensor ?
-Is the Sony so have produce thene sensor for only OM-D Pro ?

    1. I also want to know why a new adaptor is required, if there is on-sensor PDAF. The adaptor should be only an extension tube with the right number of electronic contacts and a 4/3 bayonet on one and an m4/3 bayonet on the other end, just like any already available 4/3 to m4/3 adaptor.

      1. I can think of only one depressing reason: they weren’t properly prepared for PDAF and need one or two extra electrical contacts. Ouch, that’s too depressing…

        1. 4/3 lens and camera bayonets 9 electrical contatcs, m4/3 have 11 contacts. The new adaptor may utilize 9 contatcs as if there were 11 of them.

          1. Let me try this again:

4/3 lens and camera bayonets are equipped with 9 electrical contacts, m4/3 have 11 contacts. The new adaptor may utilize 9 contacts as if there were 11 of them.

            (Still no EDIT function?)

    2. the new adaptor will come free in box with the new omd pro. Its nothing special except that it cosmetically designed to look like its part of the new omd pro body. it wont be available on its own.

  28. all the current olympus lineup now shares the same sensor with only minor improvements added in every newer model. omd has great usability, pen 5 makes only sense thanks to its form factor.

I believe what we need now is more megapixel and a step up in the low light capabilities. A 1500 dollar body which is only slightly better than om-d on the sensor department doesn’t make sense anymore.

  29. 2 Qs that I didn’t see answered yet.

    1. PDAF – will that allow me to AF 3rd party lenses (with appropriate mount adapters)? I can buy a BUNCH of decent 50 mm 1.8 AF lenses from Canikon for FAR less than m43. NOTE I already have a 45mm 1.8 Oly, which is a great lens, but there are others I am tempted by, esp. some fast lenses.

    2. Will tracking focus be better?

IQ and DR should be good enough for me.

Add an articulating screen, and I’m in! (current Panny G series user for ergonomics reasons…)

    RT

    1. 1. Is a bit silly – won’t ever happen.
      2. Everybody assumes C-AF will be comparable to 4/3. I assume it will also kick behinds as far as video is concerned. Oh joy, my legacy “D-E-A-D” F/T glass can then be used for stabilized and continuous focus video recording.

  30. What i still wanna know is there going to be an OMD-EM6 that’s Body only for $999 since the OMD-EM5 is going to be replaced in 2014 says the ADMIN.

  31. “It’s on the same level as “native” MFT lenses.”

No, technically. Hopefully your trusted sources can tell you why.

  32. In fact is an E-P5 build in EV4 with optimised sensor for 4/3 lenses ???

For 1500$ i hope it weather sealded ,better iso performance, 4K video titable viewfinder (like GX7) and come in kit with a new version M4/3 of ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 II.

    1. I’d hope that they’d come up with a better use of the viewfinder for manual focus. I find an EVF counterproductive when photographing sports, and using all points of the auto focus gets the correct focus point.

  33. So wait…
This is basically gonna be a omd body (same ergonomics) with the same omd sensor (same iq) with the difference that it can af very old 43s lenses? And its gonna be 1500$???!!!! And everyone is ok with that???

    1. Have to discount the marketing hype:

1)Only 43 lenses optimised for CDAF will perform on level with M43 lenses.
PDAF lenses will be as slow and inaccurate as before. New body needs NEW LENSES, a firmware update on old PDAF lenses will not do the job.

2)Marketing did NOT sing the praises of CAF, so you can expect the worse
      here.

3)Do you think the VF4 can be squeezed into the OMD body without compromises?

4)So far Sony on sensor PDAF is terrible compared to Canon. Don’t expect a miracle here. IQ will be compromised as well.

5)Video will be the same old, same old…

6)Pany GX7 can AF at -4EV, Sony sensor???

      Reality sucks? 🙂

        1. On whats already known. Unless sony made a huge leap their on sensor pdaf is subpar to say the least. Iq diminishes because on sensor pdaf takes up pixels.and the gh3 focuses in -3ev so theres no need to question the gx7 ability to do so

          1. Wnd if the vf4 is huge as an accessory then itll be huge on the em6. Unless they made compromises

      1. >Have to discount the marketing hype:

        by being a wanker?

        >1)Only 43 lenses optimised for CDAF will perform on level with M43 lenses.

wrong: not true, it doesnt require cdAF optimised to make it the same as on an SLR

        >PDAF lenses will be as slow and inaccurate as before. New body needs NEW LENSES, a firmware update on old PDAF lenses will not do the job.

wrong: also fantasy, all they need to be is as quick as on E5

        >2)Marketing did NOT sing the praises of CAF, so you can expect the worse
        here.

On E5? seems to depend on the skill of the user more. Not really my thing but E5 users are reporting 70% hit rate, about the same as D600 0r more than 6D. On OMD Pro? nobody has set yet, the data is incomplete

        >3)Do you think the VF4 can be squeezed into the OMD body without compromises?

        wrong: what are those ‘compromises’
seems more like a struggling gripe

        >4)So far Sony on sensor PDAF is terrible compared to Canon. Don’t expect a miracle here. IQ will be compromised as well.

DPR found it at 70% on Nex6, which is less than D600 better than 6D

        >5)Video will be the same old, same old…

not sure how we know this, some clown on the internet says so?

        >6)Pany GX7 can AF at -4EV, Sony sensor???

        >Reality sucks? 🙂

        depends what reality is
really trolls here are a dime a dozen, and your attempt is paper thin lies
        thats the ‘reality’

    2. C-AF using PDAF. Better ergonomics. Better finish. Better EVF. Better video. Better shutter. And for those with the proper glass: OBS at last.

If you want to whine, may I suggest the E-P5?

      1. iq of the 43 14-54 would be good enough for me. and a little bit faster then the m43 12-50. weather sealed would also be nice. and if I dream, a makro mode…

or maybe it will be possible to change the sensor of the E-M5 with the new sensor for maybe $ 300? 😉

    1. Good question! For those considering buying the OMD E-M1:
      — buy a 43 zoom, e.g 14-54/II, or
      — wait and hope for a m43 zoom of similar range/quality?

  34. This new OMD will be of benefit mainly to those with existing 4/3 lenses but with higher price maybe less attractive to others except for sports. What I wonder about is whether or not the IQ resolution and detail will be reduced some because of the PAF added to the sensor taking away megapixels? This occured when Sony and Canon added PAF to the sensor ie the NEX7 with 24mp showed no better resolution than the 16mp NEX3 without PAF on sensor? Same was true of the PAF on sensor used in the latest Canon mirrorless?

If the new OMD does indeed have a new higher resolution viewfinder and body I think that would have been mentioned in this rumor of testing the same? I think Oly is rushing this model out earlier before everything they wanted could be incorporated to meet the challenge coming from the GX7?

    1. > I think Oly is rushing this model out earlier before everything they wanted could be incorporated to meet the challenge coming from the GX7?

I doubt it. This camera is 2+ years late considering it’s the camera that bridges FT and MFT… and that’s been promised (and needed) for literally years. It’s painfully late, hardly rushed, and (fingers crossed) a solid performer.

      1. Indeed. Two years ago they reported how they struggled with PDAF for making the OBS really work. If it comes now, it has to deliver the goods.

  35. No more smaller sensor format! I have asked myself to stop buying any cameras less than ASP-C after I have used Sigma DPM2. The X3 technology has three layers of sensor, it equivelent to 3x APS-C size of sensor area. After I used X3, I found the photos I took with Olympus DSLRs that I once proud of, become technically deficient.

I will not buy any M43or Olympus if the size of sensor is less than full frame from now on. I have had 7 Olympus brand DSLR and EP cameras already. Enough is enough!

    1. I shoot Foveon. And a FF DSLR. Still I want this camera badly as it will be a rockstar. So it will probably compete more with FF than a slow Sigma. Maybe a Leica M is more your cup of tea than this silly small sensor stuff?

  36. good news for my 12-60,50-200swd 7-14,35-100.90-250 and 150 mm

if the new Olympus pro sensor quality will be little better than OM-D this will be a big step over E-5 quality.

Actually the unique high quality conversion software from Olympus Raw files is the Olympus viewer 3.

    1. the 12-60 and 50-200 will not be helped with this AF method only the CDAF optimized lenses such as the 14-54mk2 will really benefit using a 7.5 pound lens like the 90-250 on an mFT body will not be fun , though I wish I had it to try 🙂

  37. This sounds more like a EM-5 successor every day, especially since the size is apparently only slightly larger + bigger grip. If PDAF also supports m43 lenses in tracking, this might be the new standard for all “high” Oly cams. Just give a kit option with adapter, and one without, and you are ready to go.

    1. I suspect the build quality and weight will be a step up from the E-M5 as well, making it more of a pro camera, i.e., bit bigger, better ergonomics, better build quality, but heavier camera.

From the beginning of year (Q1 2013) roadmap, there may still be a chance for an FT-only camera, so it’s hard to say whether the E-M1 is supposed to play seconds to a fully-fledged pro camera (or whether the recently discontinued E-5 was truly the last FT-only camera, and the E-M1 takes the “pro” designation).

The rumored E-7 was supposed to ship Q4 2013, so time will tell.

      1. i was about to reply with almost the same content as you did, except for the possible FT native body, which will not happen if you ask me. Most people dont see the upcoming differences between the current OMD and the PRO model except for the sensor. I can dig the current OMD’s build quality. But having shot with both E-1 and E-3 it’s clear how the OMP Pro will feel and handle. The EVF will prob use the VF-4 internals so that will add to the higher class build plus PDAF sensor and longerlife shutter. But again..many people dont seem to realize that.

        1. There’s also the very big PLUS that the OMD Pro will allow one to utilize lenses from two different lens lines, 4:3 and µ4:3.

Dedicated 4:3 users may be shock at the tiny, convenient sizes of µ4:3 lenses. Dedicated µ4:3 users will have the ability to incorporate HG and SHG 4:3 lenses into their personal lens arsenals.

          1. I almost think they have to at this point. I am sure they are well aware of the public storm over the grossly overpriced limited black 12/2 edition. And I still want a black 12/2 at a reasonable price, damn it! 😉

They might only include the adapter with OBS bodies to begin with. However, I would hope they make them individually available (at REASONABLE COST!) as well too since adapters, like all separated parts, might disappear in the hustle & bustle of a shoot.

        1. If Oly has managed to integrate PDAF support as rumors suggest, why anybody would want a FT-only camera?

Think of it, with the same camera you get to use the FT HG/SHG zoom AND the tiny MFT primes.

          It’s a win-win.

Unless of course Oly would decide to price it out of this universe. Considering the E-P5’s price tag, and the E-5’s price tag, I wouldn’t be all that surprised though.

    1. I hope not, as it does not give a significant advantage. Olympus never made a monobloc high end body like that, using the modular concept, which fits the OM idea much better(one camera for all situations by adding or removing parts)

      1. Yes, I never used a holder with any Olympus camera to date.

This unified body/sensor with 4:3 adapter simplifies my equipment needs (wants?, obsessions?) considerably. I thought at first to buy three camera systems: a small compact system that could be tossed in a pocket or tiny bag (e.g., the Ricoh GR), a micro system based on a µ4:3 body (e.g., E-P5 or E-M5), and a more comprehensive system based on the unified body (e.g., OBS). Of course, if I opt to go pro or semi-pro, I would required backup bodies for each system.

Now I can focus on just the compact system and the OBS, with backup bodies where needed.

  38. If it has all of the E-P5 refinements, integrated VF-4 Viewfinder, dual SD card slots, I will be buying two at launch. It seems that two of my must haves are in for sure, the dual SD slots is my only concern. I love the OM-D but I could never use it for paid assignments because of the fear of losing data to a corrupt SD card. I am looking forward to the day I can dump my FF DSLRs for paid assignments.

I personally know two other pro photographers that fell in love with m.4/3 that are looking forward to a mini pro camera, it is hassle carrying 2 Nikon D3S cameras, the trinity 2.8 zooms, 85mm 1.4, 24mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 3 speedlights, in a large cumbersome camera bag that weighs 25kg+, especially after the age of 50.

    Bonus:
Size of the OM-D E-5 with the grip portion of the HDL-6.
    Native 100 ISO
    More accurate ISO readings 1600 = 1600, not 1600 = 800
Better WYSIWYG viewfinder, the current EVF is tough to judge and leads to many underexposed images
    Better C-AF
    2-4x larger buffer than OM-D E-5

  39. I can wait an see, luckly I dont plan to buy new camera system for another 6months, So I got time to plan and wait and see how this camera pans out.

  40. Better image quality? Who cares? the OMD is already good enough. We do need dual card slots (that you can use) and larger batteries. Image quality for any camera was good enough 3 years ago. There are very few people who need pixel peeping quality, and if you do then you buy a Hasselblad.

  41. Honestly, as much as I love the OM-D’s quality and IBIS, I can’t get over the ergonomics, especially after having the GH3 for several months. I hope that the OMD-Pro is bigger just so it can have more direct buttons. After all, it’s a “pro” camera and pro cameras should have a lot more direct buttons (unless it’s an MF camera. Different story, lol)

  42. Admin what about the rumored oly lenses? As much as I love the ZDs, I dont want drag ariund a big bag of lenses.q

  43. PDAF+CDAF will work better with any lens is the general assumption. Potentially yes, I’d say. However the matter of motors might be a limit.

I remember people discussing at 4/3 forums heavy native lenses focussing slower. Will they focus faster on m4/3. That is far from certain.

OTH 4/3 already had PDAF+CDAF lenses, possibly with lighter focussing groups, and those will probably focus faster. My old 9-18 has a ‘hesitation’ problem – I expect that will be solved, although I won’t spend $ 1500 for it.

Will the old Mk1 4/3 lenses, those who take 2-3 sec. to focus benefit? I can see them improving to 1 sec. but certainly not to 0.3 sec. That is the domain of light groups, fast linear motors.

It is an important point which makes me use the 14/2.5 and the 19/2.8 as my main lenses. They have instant focus, and they can refocus v. quickly – at 5 fps. Will 4/3 be able to do that? I am skeptical.

So I presume there is a certain amount of hype in the *rumored* announcement. Not all lenses are created equal in the matter of AF. However if 80% of the lenses focussed faster it would still be worth the candle.

For m4/3 lenses the benefit I expect will be in CAF, when the target comes rapidly to you – which is a limit in CDAF. That makes me think that the revamped sensor will be a general feature for Oly cameras in 2014.

I never use CAF, but who knows if it becomes so good I might begin using it. However it is a feature for fast action scenes, that I didn’t use even when shooting a Harleys’ rallye. Not all that shines is gold – goes a saying here. Beware the hype. I hope that the IQ doesn’t worsen, and that size of the camera doesn’t make it ungainly. To me GHxsize is unattractive, but YMMV.

      1. Show us your photography for a change, instead of blabbering of medicines. Are you sick in bed that you can show none? LOL.

        1. I don’t see you showing any photography here, but we can do another Rohrschach test to better gauge how your illness is progressing.

          1. You don’t see it because you are peabrained, I have high view counts from here, lately.

Besides we are asking to see YOUR photography, just to see if you can walk the talk. But nothing forthcoming?

LOL, what a turgid little wanker…

          2. Your mental illness may be treatable up to a point, but I doubt there is a cure for you being a wide open rectal orifice. I’m afraid it’s a permanent condition. You will never fit into a normal human society.

    1. Even the E-P5 had improved focus speed (over the E-M5) with 4/3’s lenses & that was, to quote (from Oly’s news release), “The E-P5’s new autofocus (AF) system enables the same world’s fastest AF speed performance as the OM-D E-M5 and improves on it by providing up to 45% faster AF performance with Zuiko Digital SLR lenses (mounted with a dedicated lens adapter).”

So lenses will vary & slow lenses on the DSLR’s won’t (I guess) be magically made faster on this either. One thing I noticed when using the Sigma 150 macro lens on my E-M5 (in MF) was the amount of shutter delay when using a flash. It would be nice if that could work better on this new pro body.

      1. That is why I said that not all 4/3 lenses are created equal. Some reacted well just to a further increase in processing speed, but not all. I noticed it between my 4/3 40-150 and the 9-18.

It will be interesting to see how the 14-54 Mk1 and the 50-200 will react to PDAF-on- Sensor, because with those it’s not only a matter of processing speed and they were dead slow.

In the end some are really old technology and were already slow with 4/3 cameras. Expectations shouldn’t be too high. Linear motors are at least two steps ahead from there, and PDAF-on-Sensor will help them basically with more precise range finding CAF.

It’s not like you waste your money if not all 4/3 lenses become blazing fast. But that of course could generate outrage in the 4/3 diehards 🙂

        1. Yes, I was agreeing with you on the lens differences. It was surprising that Oly was still updating the firmware of the ZD70-300 lens in Feb 2012 & for a slow focussing lens it actually performs reasonably well on the E-M5 (providing it is good enough light, otherwise it slows right down). I now use the M.ZD75-300 II for birds etc. Besides being faster focussing, it is much lighter too.

          1. 4/3 users are unreasonable. How could they expect AF technology to last for a decade? We can perfectly adapt OM lenses to m4/3, but once set in motion the AF game will obsolesce lenses with past technology.

One can find workarounds, and this is what Oly is doing, but they are asking like the Sun stopped in its tracks. So slowly but surely they have become luddites of the worst kind, asking for Time to stop.

As a corollary they expect the new OM-D to solve all their problems or else get an E-7. But the old batches of 4/3 lenses are at the end, and once finished, there is no incentive for Oly to restart production, since there is no business in them. So they ban m4/3.

We are back to those distant days where film users were smearing digital and trying to ban it. Well, at least we know how it went 🙂

          2. Blahblahblah nonsense.

Obviously technology gets updated, but canon ef lenses from 1988 still work on current bodies as well as they did in 1988. Obviiusly new lenses are better, faster and all that, but it does provide a clear upgrade path, allowing users to upgrade one part at a time. This is much more attractive for users then replacing their entire system all at once.

You call others unreasonable and peabrained, but it is more a case of your own blind arrogance and stupidity. Very much what also showed from your initial moronic whining about the e-m5s ‘hump’ that all of a sudden was no problem when you bought one.

          3. What I find funny id that you don’t have the guts to put a name behind your blabbering, and still you beg for credibility?

            LOL

  44. Yes ! When gx7 arrive here I will go and laugh when two months after you start seeing then in the second hand shop I was yesterday there already two gh3 and lots 12-35 -35-100. And lots of m43 models I think many ppl buy and sell quickly cuz they are use the dslrs M43 is ..mostly use by girls in auto mode ^_^
This will be for shure better than the gh3 and gx7 cuz is olympus and oly make better photo cameras panasonic shut make video cam only but even in that they are not the ( black magic ) cuz in photo even that they use same sensor bla bla bla the om-d e-m5 beat gh3 and gx7

  45. Well tell me where i can find that secondhand shop for all those lenses. I see lots of big bulky DSLR’s with overpriced lenses in second hand shops.

  46. As long as its ISO is not under , like em5 around -1/3 to -2/3 ev , it would on my shopping list. Coz it’s ISO improvement is discounted. Fuji are so tempting at the moment.

  47. I hope the new OM-D is NOT bigger. That’s what the grip is for, if you want it. Personally I do not. If the GH3 is your cup of tea, may the OMD system isn’t. No more bigger is better m4/3 cameras, please.
