While the Panasonic GX7 specs are well known (announcement in late August) we are still in the dark when it comes to talk about the new Olympus cameras. For now we got rumors from anonymous soruces about a new entry level OMD and a new FT camera.
Today two trusted sources confirmed that Olympus will announce new products the second week of September. I hope they can soon share us some details about the new cameras and elnses too!
Rumored OMD entry level info:
– Same shape as the E-M5
– Same 16MP sensor
– Built.in EVF with lower resolution EVF (compared to the 2.3 from the OMD)
– 2 axes stabilization
– no weather sealing

Looking at the specs, it seems that Olympus is getting ready to release a competition to the rumored Panasonic GX7 camera. But probably at a lower price level.
Interesting.
I would think that the GX-7 would be bought mostly by the people who were waiting for a RF design, prob the same people who dislike the OMD design. So i wonder if a cheaper OMD could really be a competitor for such group of photographers..
See my early considerations about the Panny 18 Mpx sensor. It remains to be seen if it has the same or better IQ than the Oly 16 Mpx one.
Megapickles are not everything, you should know.
…Megapickles are my world, just so you know
yes but i was merely wondering if a mirrorless with a hump can be considered as a competetive choice for the many people who prefer the RF design. so purely an aesthetic matter(at least thats how i see the main difference in both designs, ignoring the claims that its a case of ergonomics too)
I think this is olympus answer to usa-europe market that seems to prefer dslr style cameras. Like panasonic is doing with the G6.
I assume it’s possible this is just the Sony sensor with multi-aspect ratio re-enabled? I was under the impression the new sensor had the same die layout (18MP) as the GH2 which preceded it, but MAR was disabled on the GH3.
you think GH2 layout made by Sony(MA enabled) ,but i guess 1.4μm FSI pixel i read from image-sensor-world they(panny)developed and succeed on 2011,reporting 72% QE in its 1.4um FSI pixel – better than BSI
How cheaper than the OM-D EM-5 (already now discounted) that is an interesting pricing exercise for Olympus. Anyway this is rather a G6 competitor than against the GX7, in my mind though. The RF form factor is a key asset for the GX7 that the OM-D line doesn’t provide, although both will not be practically pocketable (of course, fanboys have special Mary Poppins-like pockets but that’s another story). I would say 200 USD lower than current OMD EM-5 street price, assuming none of the newer EP5 features will be there, in which case the price might be higher, as we know..
+100
do we really assume that RF for factor is better than SLR for factor?
I know for sure that my girlfriend do not like at all my Bessa R2, but she’s fine with the SLR in general
No one is assuming that the RF form factor is better than that of the SLR. But it IS a key asset in marketing the GX7 to those who prefer the flat top.
@admin The OM-D E-M5 does not have a 2.3MP viewfinder. It has a 1.4MP viewfinder. The new VF-4 viewfinder has 2.3M. You have been making that mistake for last several posts. 🙂
+1, I have noticed this too.
I also believe that a EVF with less resolution compared to VF2 or OMD would be a flop. Didn’t Pana try the same with G10? (that was a model below G2 with worse EVF).
Hopefully anonymous sources mean “below VF4” and it is only a misunderstanding of admin.
It probably is the spec of the V3 which is less than the V2 and designed for low-end PENs The V2 has the same spec as the eM5 …
You may want to clarify what you mean about EVF, since the OM-D E-M5 isn’t 2.3MP, maybe the next high-end one will be.
A pure FT camera would be the biggest possible mistake Olympus can do at this moment. The sooner killing FourThirds the better! It would be a much smarter idea to adapt a kind of in-sensor PDAF solution similar to the one from Canon EOS 70D for upcoming MFT cameras.
We is to many so mistake by FT camera, so the is maybe not stupid of Olympus and support us. :-p
I agree that the market for FT is now so small that some kind of hybrid an mFT body with proper AF of FT lenses would be a much better solution.Looking at the launch price of the E-5 $1700 how much would a dedicated FT camera with similar quality body to the E-5 with all the latest developments sensor, 5-axis etc have to be priced at considering the FT market is tiny. The non weather sealed, E-P5 with its bolt on EVF costs $1280 a high end E-7 FT only body would likely be priced near the $2000 market assuming that they wanted to make any money on it { the E-5 makes the E-M5 feel like a toy}. Problem with that kind of pricing is that you are in the space of the D600/6D and would be way above the excellent APS cameras
Only FT standar lens and maybe HG lens is for MFT camera, more is the not to say. 😉
There is a plenty of market for E-7, with 5-axis stabilization, OM-D sensor, 10+ fps – combined with 35-100 f/2 and/or 90-250/2.8 it would be sports and birding monster!
Why not OM-D E-M6 with 5-axis stabilization, in-sensor phase detection, 10+ fps, FT–MFT adapter – combined with 35-100 f/2 and/or 90-250/2.8? 😀
Maybe on tripod, not else. 😛
E-7 is in order. I never had a 43 cam but I think a good 43 cam every 1,5 to 2 years at 1000 euro body only would keep quite a few users into that system. Surely if you have all that nice glass around.
I would much rather buy a new 4/3 body for my many “old” 4/3 l3nses than many new lenses and a new m4/3 body. Besides, there is not one excellent standard zoom for m4/3.
Indeed. Only those with very little budget would really care about that. The camera should simply be state of the art, that’s all. It should bring new live to all that wonderful glass FT users have gathered over the years.
But all this discussion is meaningless. Just let it rest and wait…
Hard to believe that the current price of the E-M5, equipped with integrated viewfinder and weather sealing, is the same as the viewfinder-less, non-weathersealed E-P5, especially when they share the same exact sensor. With that said, this low-end OM-D should clearly fall between the top two PENs in terms of price. By losing all the pro features of the current E-M5, this camera effectively becomes an E-PL5 with a permanently attached viewfinder. The entry-level OM-D shouldn’t come in at a penny over $750. Seriously doubtful that this savings in price will be worth all the key features lost.
I am very interested in how Olympus researches its market. From the beginning, they’re undermining their own cameras with a questionable line-up and pricing to match. Like you, I really don’t see the point of a lower-end OM-D.
well, I see the point of an eplxx with integrated viewfinder. What’s wrong with that?
E-P5 has 1/8000sec and a 50% faster AF in low light!!
With these specs, what is the reason to release such camera? Take away everything what makes OM-D special and release a standard camera. We have 100s of same camera in different packages now.
If it sells, it will strengthen the position of the m43 system. Just look at most DSLRs that Canikon sell worldwide and you should understand.
there’s no reason to release a camera with these specs. Just mantain M5 at a lower price and concentrata all efforts on a higher spec omd (not more MP please).
Here in taiwan I still saw plenty ppl shooting ft
“Same shape as the E-M5”
I hope not exactly the same … I hate it. It’s awkward to hold and as a design it’s just wrong.
That’s subjective or even a lie. Success of the E-M5 is largely due to how easy it is to hold, and how pretty the camera is in the flesh.
People however don’t realise that it is a 400 gr. camera, so even with a pancake, not easy to carry in a pocket. If the successor was plastic. then some would see it as an advantage. Aren’t Panny cameras all made in plastic, after all? 🙂
Success of the camera is in how it performs, ergonomics are horrible. Grip is worse than even pens. All panny cameras made in plastic? Lol, that’s so clueless. Even those cheap and plastic g5-g6 have far better and much more comfortable grip.
Olympus just going into fashion and doesn’t care much about handling.
“”Olympus just going into fashion and doesn’t care much about handling.””
+1
The E-M5 has amongst the worst ergonomics I have ever experienced.
amalric looks like he is used to handling tiny equipment
I have relatively big hands. I have used the OM-D extensively for over a year, with lenses ranging from the 12mm to the 75-300mm. Not once have I used the extra grips that came with it. In my experience, it is *clearly* superior to the PEN E-P3 wrt ergonomics, mainly due to the rubberized thumb rest. It is not perfect (a couple of small, rubber like buttons; too easy to change the focus point; the twitching between LCD and EVF), but to say that it is lousy or even poor makes me think: not a trustworthy “user”. For reference, I used a Nikon D300 for 3 years prior to the OM-D.
Indeed. People saying that the E-M5 is un-ergonomic, never used one.
Suffice to say how many Pros adopted it: if basic operation was difficult they would have never tried a new format. And it has kept its price fairly well after 1 and 1/3 years, quite unique feat in the m4/3 price mess.
Let the clueless foam at the mouth. Being anonymous protects them from ridicule.
It would have been fine for me except for arthritis in my thumb joint where I first made my own add on grip & then got the HLD-6. When using the ZD70-300 lens (with MMF-3), the grip was appreciated & now I leave it on all the time, but the best part is that the E-M5 can be used without, with part or all the grip on & that to me makes it a nice versatile system.
Maybe you should try to learn a bit about the difference between your opinion and fact. In your opinion the ergonomics are crap, but that doesn’t make it ‘fact’. There exist many people disagreeing with your opinion, but their opinion isn’t ‘fact’ either.
Easy to hold??? With WHAT, a overpriced Grip?
Now that’s a Lie if I ever saw one.. Hahaha “easy to hold.” Hahaha!!!
Yes, I have tiny tiny hands, in fact I am a dwarf. Living among so many trolls lying through their teeth I thought I would go unnoticed.
Aren’t there any other hobbits here?
U’re a racist ignorant person. Period.
You must never have held a E-P1/2/3/5 then. 🙂
It’s probably mostly the buttons, the grip is not great, but it’s uglier even more. Compared to the OM-1 (or the OM-4Ti) they did everything they could to ruin everything that was good about it from a design point of view. Trying to make it ‘modern’ or something, but just ended up adding visual and practical annoyances.
http://www.olympus-global.com/en/corc/history/camera/popup/om_om4ti.html
It may be subjective, but then they just don’t know what they’re missing. ^^
What I find funny is that the E-M5 has been the most resounding success of m4/3 history, so that tells that people appreciated both design and ergos.
I remember having tried one at a Photo Fair just after and X Pro 1, and thinking how there was no comparison between the latter slippery body, and the solid grab of the E-M5.
Rather the opposite of you trolls foaming at the mouth, never having touched one. So what do you have instead in your troll pigsties? GF2? Bwahahah…
I remember you spitting sentences on OMD about how big it was and about its hump. THEN, one day, you bought, and suddenly realized that your opinions were just biased BS. That speaks a lot about you. You could be a great italian politician LOL
I still don’t like the hump. However it is a v. minor encumbrance, problem being the weight of a v. solid camera. So I solved the problem with an E-PMx, for when I don’t go for a dedicated shoot. Best of both worlds, so no need of a RF-like.
Now if instead of blabbering about Italian politicians, not my brothers anyway, you told me how you became a slave to the NSA, in the Land of the ex-Free?
My most sincere condolences, LOL
Shut up, ape. LOL
The E-M5 success is due to the sensor, integrated VF and IBIS. I don’t mind the grip size since I wanted a small camera but the mushy buttons placement and menus are pretty bad.
As owner and regular user of a PEN FT, OM-1, E-P1 and E-M5 I totally disagree with what you are saying, but that is just MY opinion, you don’t have to share it but you should realize you aren’t making a statement of fact, nor are you talking for all users.
E-M5 is still selling well after 1.5 years. Are people paying top dollars for this camera blind?
All you Panny boys are doing a disservice to Panasonic attacking Oly with no valid reasons.
Whats the point…..? There is enough choice for Olympus bodies.
What we really need is better tele-lenses! With a brighter aperture and fast focussing. Yes the Panasonic 35-100mm is one, but is only 200mm. For sports the range from 200-400mm with f2.8 or f2.8-f4 would be more as welcome.
Then buy a Kodak superzoom, lamer 🙂
I’m serious! Ever since the Olympus E1 I was interested in this system. But only when the OM-D came I made the switch from Canon dslr gear. Although I had an E3 together with the Canon stuff for almost a year to give it a try also.
Olympus missed the pro photographers because the camera/sensor just wasn’t good enough. The lenses were top notch! Now the OM-D etc are very capable cameras and with the better lenses can compete with most big dslr gear. in many ways. But sports C-AF + more bright tele-lenses with reach at least to 400mm are missing. I know pros are not the main goal for Olympus, but although MFT has the most lenses to choose from in the mirrorless world. But still a few are missing. So why again another body… Don’t you think there are enough bodies to choose form right now.
I’m one of those very few full-time photographers where I live who choose Olympus. They even look weird or have a quiet laugh about it. Not that I care about it, its all about the pics. But Olympus misses a part of the market this way.
Sorry then. People needing fast but heavy telezooms are a very small subset of *Micro* 4/3. They’ll have the hybrid body to accomodate past lenses, but I don’t see new ones being produced because they are just – heavy.
…and something completely different.
Consider the FT lens line-up and awaken.
If the new FT camera will not a mixed one, I will not buy it. I hope it can be a MFT camera with great support of FT lens.
However, I will sell my E5.
Has the light OMD no hump?
– Same shape as E-M5
– no hump?
wat.
When does it even ever bother anyone.
Okay, three things:
1. Entry level OMD: Not just true for Oly, but in general – mirrorless failed to attract anough buyers away from DSLRs, so Oly is taking the fight to them with a camera with the same general shape and form factor.
2. New FT camera? I thought it was going to be a hybrid, or at least a MFT camera with better FT lens support. Oly likes to ride dead horses if this is true, or it is the last effort to keep the last 5 FT users in the boat until the OBs finally arrives (i.e. when Sony decides that Oly can now use its new sensors – definitely after Sony has introduced it in their own cameras)
3. Where is the new GX7 info??? 😉 Too bad the specs are known already. I assume there will be no pleasant surprises such as weather-sealing, new high-res finder, or kick-ass sensor. I still fear it is the old GH2 sensor, to be honest.

A recent poll conducted over at DPR by a user makes this first comment untrue. The majority of people there were attracted over from a DSLR, either as a second or primary system.

There is noone out there with more information than Olympus on this subject. Everyone else if speaking pure fantasy (read BS) when they comment on how many users there are.
A 43rds body is the best way of retaining existing customers, and even potentially drawing them up the food chain into the HG lenses. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a redesigned body for around 1300-1400.
That was a great verbal slap-around, thank you.
FT is a minuscule part of the photography market too low to even register on any sales charts for the last couple of years no surprise given the one model option .Olympus lost money throughout the FT years there was a rumour that they lost money on every model lol. Anyone still opting for FT are doing so because the already own all the good glass they need hence their reluctance to move away from the system. To suggest FT as a way forwards is idiotic Olympus need huge mass market popularity not aiming a body at a tiny niche group who have had years to build up their lens collection. There has been no new entry model in FT for 5 years , do you honestly think anyone will give up on the better DSLR options from Nikon Canon or the wonderful freedom the smaller lighter options in mFT give , for a system that has its top model as large heavy and expensive as some FF options , with lenses that at the top end cost a fortune and weigh as much as FF seriously apart from those entrenched in the system who would go for this . I hope that they find a way to make FT glass function correctly on mFT
has spoken!
if you want surprises go to the movies. We want cameras 🙂 as cheaper, sooner and better as possible. Then we might even (god forbid) take pictures with them, if we are really bored..
Curious, I personally know more then 5 4/3 users already…
Olympus we don’t need a dumbed down E-M5, we could really use an update to the E-M5 with some better video functions. 1080p with higher bit rates and and 720p 60fps would be a great start. The competition doesn’t have your steady cam stabilisation, so it is worth doing….. please
+1000
24/25p + 44mbit/s paired with the 5-axis ibis. that’d be awesome! C’mon Oly, yes you can!
You may not need a lower-end om-d, and nor do I. Also, I’d like the changes you mention, and add 25/50fps support.
BUT
Olympus isn’t exactly in the business of exclusively satisfying your and my needs, and it might be worth considering what users they are targetting before claiming such a camera isn’t needed.
Many people are in fact waiting for such a camera that has an INTEGRATED EVF so the hotshoe can be used together with the EVF, and that includes ibis comparable to that of the e-620, for a better price then the e-m5. That neither you or me are part of that group means exactly zero.
Well put, keep it up!
That’s also why Fuji are producing another cheaper model below the X-M1, to cater for those on a lower budget that will hopefully upgrade later as well, but at least get them into the brand.
There is no sense produce new FT body. 4/3 is dead. Micro43 gives smaller size (unfulfilled promise 4/3). If Oly want to give us old 4/3 lenses, the only reasonable way is to make new OMD with good adapter for 4/3 lenses and grip to make camera bigger. For such camera we will have primes from micro43 and zooms from 4/3 (for me not acceptable due to size).
Yes, in fact I suspect that E-M5 + grip is just a rehearsal for such a hybrid camera. Just add some PDAF on Sensor by Sony, and it’s ready.
Possibly the very OM-D form factor might have been chosen to prove that old 4/3 ends there. Though we’ll have to wait till Christmas to know.
Using discounted 4/3 zooms, excellent ones, is not to be despised. It is the old format which is dead.
Lovely. Slowly turning the mind in the right direction… but still not realizing that proclaiming something as “dead” is irrelevant and silly.
If the FT lenses live, FT will live.
Just as you didn’t like the E-M5 at first and are now an advocate, you will maybe one day own an FT camera that also supports m43. But you will state it’s the other way around, again being silly. 🙂
isnt Sep is a year since the E-PL5 & E-PM2 launch
ignoring the E-PL6 (JP only) we are on the fourth generation PL and second gen PM … while I personally find nothing lacking in either camera and while the own the m43 16mp sensor PERHAPS its time for an update?!
sad but true that a year is a dinosaur at the entry level … WiFi & NFC would be the logical additions
and both E-PL7 & E-PM3 should be available “body only” but in boxed kits with that silly 15/8 … we’ve seen the new colours!
Who wants this?
There are already two Olympus bodies without weathersealing or 5 axis IS. Who wants a third? Especially since Sony is also going to be bringing out competitive products with 5 axis IS.
Maybe those that were asking for a cheaper version of the OM-D last year & those that want an OM-D with built in EVF but can’t afford the E-M5. I think it will sell.
Sure it will. And it will be cheaper for Olympus to produce, rather than lowering the price of the EM-5. Good news for existing EM-5 owners (for future resale value).
It may nicely replace the wonderful (and often underrated) G3 I have.
Its mFT.
Thanks. I was worried for a moment.
I’m very tempted to look through all of your posts and see what your track record is. 😉
The low end OMD definitely not my type & my attention certainly on the GX7 . The GX7 did everything right initially except the mysterious 18 megapixels remain to be seen . I still insist it don’t worth of upgrade from GX1 if the GX7 packed with sensor that is on par with current EM5 . Better save money for other stuffs .
The GX1 still a very very nice camera to use .
it’s an EPL-5 in a EM-5 Shape. It’s a EM-5 down ok but maybe have 1/8000s, wifi nfc, focus peaking, etc… what do you think? maybe can use HDL-6 also.
@Admin – PLEASE, stop saying “2-axis IBIS.” My E-PL1 corrects in 3-axes. There is NO 2-axis IBIS. It’s driving me batty.
It goes up & down or left & right. What’s the other direction? Axis does not refer to the modes of IS1, IS2 or IS3.
The sensor can move up and down and sideways at the same time. In marketing speak they call this a third axis. On the OMD, the sensor can also rotate left and right, adding two more axes.
The old IBIS system, in all PEN cameras up to the E-P3, corrects for camera motion in the three rotational axes. These are: 1) Pitch – Rotation about the x-axis, 2) Yaw – Rotation about the y-axis, and 3) Roll – Rotation about the z-axis.
The camera accomplishes these corrections by shifting the sensor up/down, left/right or by rotating the sensor.
The new IBIS system (referred to as 5-axis) corrects for these three rotational motions in addition to correcting for shift along the x-axis and shift along the y-axis.
What most seem not to be aware of is that correction of the additional two movements (x and y axis shift) is only useful for macro photography, and can only be implemented when the camera knows the current camera to subject distance. So, you can’t correct all five camera movements with a non-electronically-coupled lens.
The old IBIS system, in all the PEN cameras up to and including the E-P3, corrects for rotational movement about all three axes. Pitch (x-axis), Yaw (y-axis) and Roll (z-axis). It did not correct for translational movement (shift) in any direction. The camera accomplished these corrections by shifting the sensor up/down and left/right and by rotating the sensor.
The new IBIS system (referred to as 5-axis) corrects for the three rotational movements and adds correction for translation in the x and y axes.
HOWEVER, the additional two movements are only useful for macro photography and they don’t work unless you have an electronically-coupled lens. The camera has to know the subject distance to accurately correct for shift.
Gyro sensor is 3-axis is one thing, but IS in camera is the any thing, this is the ondt two.
My PEN E-P2 has 2-axis stabilization: horizontal and vertical.
Please stop writing “2-axis.” The plural of axis is “axes.”
Where is the OM-D PRO?? If I remember it had high FT4-5 rate scheduled for second half of 2013, probably with the 4/3 adapting solution (incl. PDAF). It seems it turned to four-thirds only camera??
+100 whats with the om-d pro indeed that has been previously rumored ???
now there’s only low end om-d and FT-only left?
I am sceptical on the FT-only rumor..
Recent rumors from Panasonic and Sony have put this into shade… Olympus has to offer something more interesting.
Considering the age and price of the current OMD the lower spec OMD shouldn’t be more than 499$ otherwise there is no point when you can get refurb OMD for under 800$
There most certainly is a point as most consumers don’t buy refurbished cameras, won’t know where they could get those to begin with, and care enough about waranty to get suckered into extended waranties.
New Canon 70D seams to have a great C-AF on sensor. They only use the mirror for an optical viewfinder.
Every new MFT Top Modell will be asked for perfect C-AF support from know on. Otherwise Oly and Pana will loose more market shares.
An existing OMD technologie has to be lowered in price instead of creating a doubtfull low end model of an OMD.
…from now on…
I’ve heard mixed reports about the 70D on-sensor AF. Either way, the Olympus AF on the PENs and OM-D is very competitive and Canon is playing catch up.
It is a catch up in the market of DSLM…
Soon Canon will equip a new EOS-M II with that new Phase-AF Sensor. And it is obvious, there will be a OVF-Line with 70D and a EVF-Line with EOS-M II and they can sit and watch which one will get more market shares.
And what about a low end OMD in that situation? Same future as a low end panasonic G-Modell had some years before – the G10. Who still knows that one? Who bought it?
Hey, can I borrow that crystal ball? I need the numbers for next weekends lotery.
Canon allways used the same Sensor, from 550D to 60D and for EOS-M. Same procedure as Olympus with its 12 MP Sensor.
You need no cristal ball to predict a use of that Sensor in the next EOS-M Modell. It ist made for mirrorless! In sense of allready the 70D is mirrorless!
But you do need one to predict what canon will do, how its going to perform in reality, and how the market will respond to it. Making a mirrorless that directly competes with their dslrs isn’t a likely action by Canon in the near future.
An entry level OM-D would be competing with every entry level SLR on the planet (and with the likes of G5, G6, GalaxyNX and NX20). It’s an exhausted segment of the market where the only way to sell is to reduce the price far enough. Not much to win there. Olympus should learn from its recent history (4/3).
Olympus (and all the other brands) will continue to produce this garbage as long as consumers demand it.
It is always best to ignore the lower end segment, and if budget is tight look for bargains at previous generation mid-to-high end. It’s the same with Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.. etc..
Admin is there any news about the new fast zooms you mentioned in january? I would really like a Olympus fast standard zoom of something like the 4/3 12-60mm. I would sell my 12 and 45mm for it. Keep on going with the good work on your site.
yes, waiting also for zooms, zooms, zooms…
No. It corrects for the three rotational camera movements, pitch, yaw and roll.
Stop saying omd has 2.3mp evf dummy!
OK, so options are…
– OMD low end (less features)
– OMD high end (EP5 specs, better video, bigger higher res EVF, wifi…)
– E7 4/3 camera with the new sensor, 5-axis stab, etc…
– Pen with EVF on left hand side (OMD-Pen hybrid, new line or Pen PRO?)
– Hybrid m4/3 & 4/3 camera (with Sony’s on-sensor AF pixels)
Olympus resources can only release one camera at a time. Maximum two. Soo….
PS: Low end OMD will obviously be the most boring option.
But with the new Sony partnership I imagine there are exciting things that can happen!
Oh yeah, we really need a fast high quality zoom a-la 4/3 12-60 or 14-54mm!!
How about 12-54mm f2.8-f3.5?? Make it very sharp and its a hot seller!
With all the OMDs and EP5s out there I bet there is demand for a great zoom.
That 12-50mm does not cut it!!
