I got this info a couple of weeks ago and another source confirmed that the specs are correct. So here is the new info about the new E-Pm2 (or E-PM3?) model. I have been told there is a compatibility between the new PEN cameras and smart phones. So probably a sort of remote control and photo sharing service like we will see on the Panasonic GH3. The E-PM has a touchscreen that should be the same of the [shoplink 29074]Olympus E-M5[/shoplink]. The sensor is also the same of the [shoplink 29074]Olympus E-M5[/shoplink] but the new PEN cameras will not have the advanced 5 Axis IBIS of the E-M5. The new E-PM2 will come in RED, White, Silver and of course Black. And it has a new grip. The camera with battery and [shoplink 33351 ebay]SD card[/shoplink] weights 280 grams.
P.S.: If you don’t care about getting always the newest stuff there is some nice deal on the current E-PM1. The Black camera with kit lens sells new for 299 Euro on [shoplink 33352 ebay]eBay Germany (Click here)[/shoplink]. US readers can find plenty of refurbished E-PM1 at Cameta (Click here).

Sounds like a nice camera. Love the E-M5 touchscreen so that would be a welcome addition. Plan to pick one of these up for my wife once they are out.
“Love the E-M5 touchscreen ”
Agreed!!
The E-M5 touchscreen is fantastic, very well implemented and easy to use for shooting.
My plan is to purchase a new PEN as an E-M5 backup, maybe with the new 17mm lens at some point and a VF-1 for the top.
that does sound promising… i assume the touchscreen info is also valid for the e-pl5 then?
I certainly hope so. Unless Olympus is hamstringing it’s upper tier PEN like it did with the E-P3. The upload to smartphone function sounds plausible, but the phone as a remote trigger? What? Doesn’t at all sound like something that would be used by P&S upgraders, unless it’s a substitute for the timer…
admin, any info about gh3 videocodec and framerates?
I alreayd posted them last week!
I know, just wanted to know if you haven´t got something new about gh3 before announcement..
Would be nice if we could use the iPhone as Viewfinder (for stills work in the studio).
Really ? I don’t think it will ake a lot of difference : the smartphone display aren’t much bigger than the camera display, may be even smaller ?
What we need is a tablet, like the new ipad3.
I like touschscreen on the OMD. If the shutter is also quiet, die E-PM2 or 3 is a interesting “every-day-camera” for me.
there is no mechanical shutter in any m43 cameras, So what do you mean by quiet shutter ?
There is a mechnical shutter in EVERY m43 camera so far, so it does make a difference. I don’t know of any mirrorless system cameras that lack a mechanical shutter other than the Nikon J1/J2.
Yes, and the shutter of the E-PL3 is rather loud and shocking the camera. The M5 shutter is much much more pleasant, quiet and less shocking the M5 body.
Not according to a number of posters on DPreview who have experienced significant “camera shock” on the E-M5 at certain shutter speeds
Yes, there definitely is a mechanical shutter. What there is not, is a mirror, though :-). In the Nikon V1, you can choose whether to use the mechanical shutter (more accurate?) or the electronic shutter (faster).
Mechanical shutter on the V1 give faster flash sync speed. There might be other advantages too since the shutter eliminate the dependency on the readout speed of the sensor (which creates the yello-effect on video). I’m not sure how much diffence it makes for stills though as a mecanical shutter also use some time to open and shut.
Electronic global shutters that would eliminate mechanical ones have been rumored since before the GH2 was launched, still only rumors for these types of cameras. Electronic global shutters would need a lot of support circuts on the sensor and reduce the light sensitive area.
Have not E-M5 only, one shutter eliminate, and so have only the last shutter eliminate.
You mustn’t own the E-PM1. Apart from a new sensor, a quieter shutter is on the top of my wish list. It has woken up a sleeping baby.
My E30 wouldn’t just wake the baby, it would scare the living daylights out of it. 😉 At a concert it is very noticable & can only be used during the loud sections whereas the E-M5 is sooo much better (quieter). I guess the body of the E-PM models may not be as heavy & solid to dampen the shutter (like the difference between E30 & E5) as much as the E-M5 does & might not be as quite.
+ 10000000000 that will be great ^^
Will it auto-rotate images?
This sounds good. E-M5 sensor plus touch screen makes it a pocketable complement to my E-M5, for those times when I don’t want to carry a camera or bag around my neck. The old IBIS is OK by me.
I would hope they’d at least update the existing IBIS so it actually works. Otherwise looking like a very well spec’d camera for around $500. Only other hope is for a full-sized screen when in 3:4 format, the current 2.3″ usable area is less than acceptable given the 4/3’s sensor size.
@steveo agreed why don’t they have the logical 4×3 ratio screen ?
There is necessary somthing like new PENPAL, and firmware update for all “old” models – EPL2, EP2, EP3, EPL3, EPM1 and OM-D, with Wi-Fi, own battery and possibility to connect with smartphone (and remote control) – compatible with Android, iOS, Symbian Belle, Bada.
New GH3 will have Wi-Fi, new NEX6 will have Wi-Fi, there is necessary to add such funcionality to all bodies – in new PENs maybe directly in body, for older – using accessory.
Dear Admin
Still nothing about a 4/3 lens adapter ?
I start to feel tired on this m4/3 .
Where is the camera to rival RX1 ?
To compete against Fuji’s X-E1 ?
M4/3 really need to catch up faster .
???? Olympus OMD EM-5. I never would chance this camera against Fuji (no IBIS, to less lenses) or the RX1 (to expensive, no interchangable lenses).
So: what’s the point?
Shure – FF makes sense – it’s the new medium format – like the Mamija 645 or the Bronica ETR-Si in the past. So it could be, that I go for the Nikon D600 or a cheap Canon EOS 6D.
m4/3 complements FF much better than aps-c does.
I agree a m4/3 kit along with a FF is ideal. APS-C is just too middle of the road. The bodies and lenses are just too large for a sensor that’s half the area of FF.
admin, what’s going on with the new XZ-2? any information to share??
I agree. I’m also interested on XZ-2. I love my XZ-1 alot but I sometimes also do video. which sucks on XZ-1 though.
+1. Many are very interested in this, Admin, any info appreciated.
+1 – but with bigger sensor. Same as RX 100. Lens: more wideangle please.
XZ-1 was a revolutionary product. the speed was unheard of. and the sharpness is impressive. I have it and happily using it. Really would love to upgrade to XZ-2. I doubt it will be as revolutionary. LX7 probably stole the show already. My gut feeling is it probably using the same sensor as Samsung EX2F or P7700. with slightly faster aperture like LX7.
I really wish someone like Ricoh or Olympus pair a 35/0.95 with 1/1.7 sensor, in a very compact package like XZ-1. that will be so much fun. 🙂
I have the LX3 – good camera. But I watch out for the Sony RX100 – much smaller than the LX7 with a much better IQ.
I think, this Sony-thing is a game changer in this camera class.
Admin, any info on price?
I think 399. Have to look for a confirmation form sources before to post this as FT5!
I hope they do a $399 w/ kit and and $299 w/o kit. If they do, I’ll grab one of those $299. Don’t really need another kit lens….
Yes, please body only option.
Hard to believe it will sell for $399 with kit lens… That would be the less than last year’s starting price for the XZ-1!
I guess they remove more buttons in favour for Touchscreen control (like EOS M).
Makes sense to offer one ultra small model.
If the inclusion of touch screen helping this camera to change the settings quickly, I’m not surprise if EPM-2/3 become the fastest selling camera in m4/3. So I hope Olympus get wise and let user change setting from touch screen like touch screen phone and not relying confirmation through button again.
there’s no hope to see the viewfinder on a new pen?
I wonder if this new mini will be a worthwhile upgrade for those people who already own the e-pm1?
The new sensor and screen should make it worth it alone.
you know what? maybe instead of cameras with application support, cameras that directly stream the images to our phones that already have application support is a much better solution. like those wifi sd cards but with better integration. think about it? a camera with built in wifi or bluetooth streams every photo directly to the phone or a cloud service, we go to the app on the phone and let the application do its thing right there. stich panoramas, upload to fb or instagram, make timelaps, etc…
i would put a little dent on the battery life but not more than doing all these on camera.
The new Pen sounds nice. I hope one of them really has a built-in EVF. If so, I’m there. If not, then there’s no reason for me to change my current micro four-thirds line-up which includes a G3, GX1 and E-PM1.
Add more tethering features to it 🙂 Then update my EM5 to work in a similar fashion with the pen bluetooth accessory for tethering and control.
no swivel lcd?
We won’t see a swivel screen on the E-PM2/3 because the goal of the mini is to be small. I expect the other PEN will have it though.
sounds like a significant upgrade to E-PM1. Thank you Sony (competition). The price at $399 (if true) would be a killer price. With E-M5 sensor, touch to focus feature (great for selective focus), I wouldn’t be surprised if E-PM2 dominates mirrorless sales (but not until they keep manufacturing E-PL1 pretending it’s overstock)
