GH4 Review by Dave Dugdale
According to a very good source Panasonic will release a firmware update which adds Gamma Log on the GH4. The source didnt tell me when exactly the fw will be announced.

Very nice review.
I have only one remark thought: The jpeg engine from Gh4 is fantastic, so much better than anything else on the market (except maybe Fuji).

It is a matter of taste. I personally also like Canon default rendering. But with modern MP counts, the difference is really hardly visible anymore.
There may be a matter of taste in comparing different camera processing algorithms of course. Objectively speaking, the Gh4 sensor and Canon 70D sensor have similar noise levels in RAW but the JPG engine from GH4 makes the files cleaner and more detailed. If someone preferars a mushy and nosier file that’s his choice. The diference is noticeble, GH4 has only 16 Mpix resolution and 70D 20, and GH4 resolves more detail even at minim ISO:

The main difference is about color and tonality and not noise or detail.
No offense but in my opinion all canon APSC until now have the worst colors of any manufacturer. They tend to be neutral-cold and when wormed up they get shity brown. I speak exclusively about jpg engine, not RAW files processed.

Not really, I have no problems with 5D mak 3, 1Dx and 1Dc cameras what so ever, those are very good photographic tools.

No not similar , the gh sensor is far more capable in terms of read noise and dr than the canon. Oh and another bonus is it has very fast readout speed.
Canon is the worst, Sony is the best then Panny, after that all kinda crappy in terms of color and jpeg quality. That said I rarely shoot jpeg mostly shoot raw and use capture one or raw therapy.
Fuji is overrated , so called fuji jpeg or color is nothing special in fact I prefer Sony color over over saturated cyan dominated so called fuji color, even Panasonic has better jpeg engine than that of fuji.
I like the Fuji JPEG engine a lot, I wish they make such great hybrids like Panasonic to be honest.
I believe he’s considering the Sony A7s as well. He’ll get both no doubt.
What is a Gamma Log and why would someone be happy to have it???
It is a super high flat profile useful for grading video, especially 10 bit with 4:2:2 color sampling video files.
If one were to strip the stern and considerate facade off the presenter, I’m pretty sure we would see beneath a giggly boy who just found a new toy and he can’t get enough of. (Or he is really that much disappointed in the Canon…)

The heading is a little misleading. He didn’t sell his Canon gear yet. And if he does leave, it’s mostly for video, and I’m sure he’ll keep a Canon around for stills.

Perhaps you can inform him of his intentions then, because in the video comments he wrote that he’s he’s selling his 5DMkIII on his Facebook page. Seems he forgot to consult you before making a decision for himself. I’m sure he wont let it happen again.
Great, a GH4 firmware update with a new feature already. Isn’t the GH3 the stepchild? A poor viewfinder with no focus peaking and disappearing viewfinder data, neither of which were fixed with a firmware update. Many legit customer complaints never dealt with. Obviously, Panasonic would rather that model never have existed.
I’ve done plenty of shoots with the GH3 and despite it not being as good as the GH4, it’s still better than anything Canon, Nikon or Sony currently offer for video. Just because it didn’t make as large a leap as the GH4 doesn’t mean Panasonic should be berated – it was significantly superior to the GH2 that proceeded it.
Well not better than my a7s for sure but better than anything from Nikon canon crappy dSlr.

In Japan Hong Kong Korea its been already out and many people here already comparing it to their gh4s.
JRJ, you must have missed the message about the GH3, that it couldn’t get focus peaking due to hardware issues. Thus there was never any chance of a firmware update providing this.

Well Dave always sounded very logical and as logical as he is, he should like the gh better than the thing of the last century ddlrs. In fact I think only those diehard dSlr fanboys choose canon Nikon over the gh or alpha 7.
Horses for courses. I use m43, APS-C and 135 systems, all have their strengths, weaknesses and purpose. A friend just bought the A7 but it is not a perfect camera by any means. Not as great to hold as the Fuji XT1. Sony just doesn’t understand ergonomics (except for the RX100) and they certainly do not have enough lenses yet to make up a system.
Right horses for courses, that’s what I have just said. Gh4 for general day light work and the Sony for lowlight. No need the fuji and the canon craps though.
