    1. Tiny camera but the lenses are big. Panasonic is doing what Sony has done with its NEX cameras – tiny cameras with big lenses. The only lens that looks natural on the GM1 is the 14mm and the 17mm f/2.8.

      1. The lens has to produce a large enough image circle. Short primes can be made smaller and would suit this camera best. Any zoom is going to look large on it.

      2. Really, maybe a bit to shortsighted …
According to Pana the 20mm pancake is also a good match:
        http://www.panasonic.de/site/de_DE/get/7242/9524/9590/9603/13227927/13215091/13215108/13215110/13224821/13224822/img_132_88_Panasonic_DMC-GM1_s_front_H_H020A_HGR1.jpg
And to me the GM1 + Olympus 45mm f 1,8 is a stellar combination. I don’t know of any other combination which will give you similar results for portrait photography for only 320 g (204 + 116)
Also the Samyang/Rokinon 7,5mm will be a logical match.

      1. I can easily put my epl5+20mm in my cargo pants pocket so gm1 should be more than ok with any pancake lens. Just don’t expect to be jeans pocketable.

        1. How would putting paint on your jeans help?
          Unless you mean ‘paint-on’ jeans.
See, a little punctuation goes a long way.
Ask your mother when she comes to tuck you in and put on the night-light.

  1. The Art of Lumix video is really a nice adv. (And it shows that you don’t need a lomo lens to be creative 😉 )

This GM1 is really nice, I would buy it as back up body in a heartbeat, if I wasn’t looking at something different..

  2. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  3. Good news guys, I made my mind! I will go for the GM1 and not the RX10. I think the portability aspect is more important to me than the all-in-one feature richness of the RX10. And if I need the AIO goodness for a vacation, the RX10’s price might have fallen to a more reasonable price (for me). 😀

Blunty’s reaction is the best and Ralf seems to like the GM1 as well! Damn, that camera is so nice! New problem arised: Black/Black or Black/Silver? But the orange version is also very nice! Ahhh!!! 😛

    1. Yeah, the GM1 just seems like one of those cameras you just HAVE TO BUY! I don’t really want one, but I WANT ONE! 😉

I showed my girlfriend the Spanish video posted here the other day and she LOVED it! Especially the orange one. I asked if I should sell my GX1 and get a GM1 … she gave me a don’t you dare look. 😉 She loves the GX1, LVF2 and 14-42mm II combo.

      1. If it had 1/2000 and a hot shoe for LVF2, the GM1 would be just perfect. But still: a camera of this size with such a sophisticated system and sensor is just incredible! High end P&S just died for me. I know that the 12-32 cannot compete with the lenses of LX7, XZ-2, MX-1, G16 and so on on speed, compactness and qulity, but one has to make sacrifices and those lenses cannot compete against the like of the 20mm or 45mm.

But still the RX10 is just as incredible as the GM1, but in its own terms of course. The same holds for the X-E2! 😉

        1. I agree about the LVF2 hotshoe. That would have be phenomenal! Yeah, I prefer the flat, recessed strap holders to the lugs.

The mechanical shutter goes up to 1/500th, then the electronic shutter kicks in up to 1/16,000th! Wow! and I was thinking the GX7’s 1/8000th was amazing!

  4. I really never learn anything from Blunty…could be my fault…but usually what he has to offer I already know….and unboxings…welll outside of seeing the size of this camera what else is there to see…do I really need you to show me the charger cable ?…all that stuff is in the product information

    1. No, it will not. It will not in the USA.
Panasonic does wonderful products, but their marketing and distribution suck!

  5. Hahahahaahaa! Pocket camera IT AIN’T!!!! Paired w/ the SLOW lens kit JUST KILLED ITS MINI FOOTPRINT. Prime lenses will make it larger… And lack of IBIS just ruined the appeal. Lack of control buttons, hotshoe, and evf makes this oversized almost-jacket-pocket camera, a joke!
You are stupid to compare its size to the RX100 since the GM1 only looks portable without an attached lens.
    STUPID PANNY.

      1. I was quite surprised as well when I saw it. I remember one suggestion given long time ago in one forum was indeed that would be great idea to cover the curtains when the camera is off to protect the sensor during the lens interchange…

          1. It’s clearly visible on video that the sensor is covered by closed shutter curtain.
Was it due to different servo/work cycle or they finally understood that sensor is better to be covered while changing lens/off – remains unknown.

  6. Am new to 43, but am thinking about building a small set : GM1 + Oly 75 1.0 + Panny 20 1.7 and Panny 100 – 300 (or 35 – 100 2.8, not decided yet). But : why use the neck strap for such a small cam? I want to use it with a hand strap just like my RX100, and when using the 100 – 300, I just carry it in my hand. But…is it possible to get rid of one of the strap hinges on the body, they are so big vs cam and IMHO just look ugly. Otherwise great work by Panny !!

    1. I cannot say for sure, but on all the cams I know, one can detach those. This would be the very first thing I would do if I get the GM1 and then I will attach a wrist strap into those smaller lugs.

    2. Go for the GX7 if you are intending to use lenses like the 75mm, 100-300mm or the 35-100mm. The GM1 is lovely little camera I would suggest you to buy as a pocket camera you can always have with you and your beloved pancakes, but not the zooms.

  7. This reminds me of the original prototype for the first Olympus digital Pen. Simple and understated and attractive.

  8. Actually, what I find a bit “dumb” is that AF switch. I don’t know but to me a 2nd dial or another fn button would have been the better solution on this type of camera. Most of the audience (2nd body for casual use or P&S upgrade) will most likely use it in AF-S mode 95% of the time and for the rest there is the Q menu. 2 buttons would mean direct acces to ISO and AEL without touchscreen or q menu which seems more useful (or another combination).

This gets to me to another point: Why does the 15mm PL F1.7 have an AF/MF switch? GM1, GX7 and GH3 all have switches for that and G or GF will follow or use the menu. That decision is even more dumb in my opinion. They could have used that location for a L-Fn or something like that. Now, when you pair GM1 and 15mm, you will have 2 AF/MF switches….. Maybe that will change until release.

      1. I can’t wait for this lens. The aperture ring alone makes it functional with all sorts of bodies that only have one dial. having two dials on the body means very quick access to ISO as well. The 25mm is my favorite lens so far, so I expect the 15 to render just as beautifully. I got more dof out of the Fuji 35mm 1.4, but the bokeh quality of the 25mm f1.4 is hard to beat for the cost. a gem of a lens!

    1. Totally agree. That is a wasted dial that could have been assigned different functions to control aperture or shutter speed. I’m not sure who is changing focusing modes so often that they need a dedicated switch. I’ve never even assigned it to a Fn button before.

Still, this is a great looking cam and it has me tempted to trade in my e-pm2 for it – suddenly the mini doesnt seem mini enough.

      1. Actually, that camera made me to think about the E-PM2 again (before I wanted to get the E-M5), because it is cheaper and it has VF2 option (VF4 is too expensive) and IBIS. But then you have a worse screen, bigger camera, bigger lens with lock, no 12mm, no WiFi, no peaking, worse video, no time lapse and I find the GM1 much nicer.

Unfortunately, the GM1 seems to lack the panorama mode, but on the other hand the PM2 has no live-bulb/time (Is that correct?). But that focus switch is really a misuse of space on such a tiny camera.

          1. ….. You just should have said no. 😛 Still, for me the GM1 seems to be the better bet, the small 12-32 lens being a major point.

  9. I just really would have preferred a basic form of IBIS. It’s not an absolute necessity but it does help and it would have totally eliminated the need for a high end p&s.
This thing is so small and with such a high end sensor and feature set that it can’t be ignored.
I’ll wait and see what this large sensor p&s from Olympus turns out to be and make a decision.
Ultimately it’s a go anywhere cam with the kit lens or with my 12f , 45f1.8 or 7.5 fish eye.
The other beautiful thing with the GM1 is that it’s so small and light that it can double as a second body for the smaller primes without too much weight while the em1 takes the role for larger zooms or heavier primes. I then have to decide between this and my trusty old ep3 which has ibis but is showing it’s age especially the sensor compared to the latest offerings.

  10. EM1 ALERT !!!!!
Not a happy chappie just had an email from AMAZON say the EM1 & 12-40 pro has been pushed to November 12th my finger is hovering over the cancel button GGRRRRR!!!!

  11. If somebody is interested in a lot of pictures of the GM1, especially in silver/black with the 20mm on it and the grip attached, check out this site:

    http://www.panasonic.de/html/de_DE/Presse/Neueste+Meldungen/104+-+2013+-+Oktober+2013+-+LUMIX+GM1+%E2%80%93+Micro-FourThirds+in+superkompakter+Best-Form/13227927/

Scroll down and look on the right side. The 20mm looks kind of funny on that GM1, but should be nicer with the grip attached. In the 999€ kit (GM1 + 12-32 + 20 + grip) one will get the grip for free (if 100€) and then some 30€ for the 20mm (330€ alone). I think that is great start into the m43 world! 😀

  12. I think Panasonic has a instant Collectors Item on their hands… I’ll take a All Black Kit, in the U.S., please.

  13. Does it come in lime color? It’ll match our dining room chairs. Seriously thinking of getting this for my wife who doesn’t want to carry my 5dmk2.

  14. I played around with the GM1 today, like when the EM-5 first came out, you can’t help but notice the small size compared to photos, it really is tiny. As a grown man, I even used the word ‘cute’ when I held it shamefully, that camera does that to you.

Might have to get one… for the wife obviously.
