Full GM1 review at ePhotozine.

ePhotozine (Click here) published the full Panasonic GM1 review. The camera earned the maximum score and the editor writes:

The Panasonic Lumix GM1 is a miniature marvel, showing just how compact the Micro Four Thirds system can be without compromising on image quality!

This is also on of my (43 editor) preferred MFT cameras. That’s why I preordered one! Hope to get it before Christmas.

GM1 preorder list:
In US at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto.
In Europe at Amazon Germany, Wex Germany, Amazon UK, Fotohanskeuzekamp, Cyberphoto Sweden and Wex UK.

  1. I want a shot of the GM1 against a Cannon 5D, just to see how ridiculous small it is.
It is not for me but I appreciate it is a great camera, maybe as a 2nd camera.
I bet will will be rebranded as a Leica, it has the classic Leica shape.

      1. i hate how camerasize counts the viewfinder eyecup as the back of the camera. it doesn’t really help that well when comparing thickness.

  2. What a hack site. That wasn’t a “full review” as 98% of what they blathered about, was info right out of the product brochure.

As far as that little toy goes, it is what it is. A small camera, with a m4/3 sensor. However, it lacks every single manual control that a photographer is going to want in order to take great shots, and not miss those shots due to menu fiddling. They’ve simply compromised shoot-ability, in the name of making a small “thing”.

    1. Perhaps you missed the entire point of the camera-small. The build quality has been described as very non-toy like. You could send them a full redesign spec with many controls and it would end up larger and no longer compact or what it was designed to be. Controls do not make the photographer or the photograph and there is a compromise that comes with a compact package. I have an EM-5, and I can’t wait to get this camera as it will be with me more often, long over due. Finally the word micro can be used to describe the formate in true form. For those that don’t want a very small camera then buy something else like a GX-7 or Pen, I expect this camera to be a really big hit.

    2. Somehow a nice image showing the strangeness of Panasonic cameras.
The G3 has all needed features and parameters, but is too huge and heavy.
This other one is small but even lacks remote control input (app is no replacement for remote control) and has crippled video mode (video being the only thing making Panasonic cameras somehow interesting).

      1. I’m no Panasonic fan boy but you seem to have left out the GX-7. They have M43 cameras of all sizes, nothing strange and more variety than anyone else in the space.

      2. To describe the G3 as huge and heavy is, quite frankly, silly.
Considering it has a good quality EVF and a full set of controls plus a four thirds sensor it is a very compact size.

    3. How is it that everyone is a photographer or that a photographer can’t use a second camera body?

I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who just want to use a camera, not worry about all the things the other models have that it doesn’t–for any brand.

    4. “However, it lacks every single manual control that a photographer is going to want in order to take great shots […]”

      LOL. LOL.

It’s LOL twice because: “manual controls” are not prerequisite to take “great shots” and GM1 has plenty of manual controls (via the touch screen).

      1. If one even needs to qualify why manual (buttons, not computer screens) controls are important for something like photography, then they are either speaking to a novice, or a fan-boy, ready to defend an arbitrary product.

        1. Or some people don’t care because the value is in the size. You keep describing another product you can buy. Should it have grip built in as well? What else? Soon is becomes one of their other cameras. Good thing you were not on the product development team.

    5. The reviews find that the GM1 with its electronic shutter and new designed mechanical shutter are virtually without shutter shake, a serious problem found at certain speeds on both the EM5 and E1 consequently the GM1 capable of taking sharper pictures. Anyone who is using an iphone or like which includes most people will find the selection of either shutter speed or aperture manually on the touch LCD with the GM1 to be very easy and convenient. The most important thing in photography is not the speed of changing either shutter or aperture but framing and taking the picture in the first place in my opinion and the GM1s fast AF speed and fps certainly provide that.

  3. I just picked up the GX7 recently, but I’ll wait till the All-Black version. I would love to put my P/L25mm on this camera. G6 still looks tempting as well.

    1. I think it’ll be amusing to have this camera body mounted to my MMF-3 adapter and ZD 35-100mm f/2.0, not that I’ll be able to use it handheld, but just for the sake of mounting the lens.

  4. This is a very compelling camera, but I wonder why they don’t just make it with a fixed zoom lens to compete with the Sony RX. Maybe I am being too obvious here. I’d love to have one of these, but it’s more than I want to pay for a small camera.

    1. “This is a very compelling camera, but I wonder why they don’t just make it with a fixed zoom lens to compete with the Sony RX.”

Because then it wouldn’t be a m43 camera.

“Maybe I am being too obvious here. I’d love to have one of these, but it’s more than I want to pay for a small camera.”

Hu? You brought up here the Sony RX line and you complain about the GM1’s price??

The RX100 was launched at 650€, GM1 kit – 700€. It’s only 50€ of difference. And for the price of one RX1 you can buy about 4 (four) GM1 kits.

  5. I have feeling people would be buying the GM1 if only for the laughs.

Another irony: despite being smaller and having cramped UI, it still has more controls than a Sony NEX.

  6. Looks really nice – with the leica 15mm 1.7, 25mm 1.4 it could be a perfect little machine for me if I can handle it 😉

  7. Wondering how this compares to the e-pm2. 15% smaller, 25% lighter. Less controls, but more nifty features.

Panasonic really are leaving olympus in the dust when it comes to body design and product-line differentiation.

It’s great having two main companies producing m43: but it would be nice if we could get the best of Panoly in one cam.

    1. I think the E-PM2 has better DR and also better noise performance, based on the limited number of sample photos so far, though not as cute as this GM1.

  8. Not only is it the smallest m43 body but it also has the quietest shutter with the first curtain. Soon you have the option of a compact 15mm f1.7 and 35-100mm compact zoom. Lots of reasons to like this camera.

I hope the GM2 can squeeze in 1080p60 then I will seriously consider to replace my RX100. The GM with kit and 17mm would make a great compact combination.

  9. Not impressed by the noise performance. I can see noise even in fairly low ISOs. I hope Panasonic is not using an old sensor again.

    1. If you compare a 24mp APS-C with an old 10mp APS-C you’ll see that at the lowest ISO (let’s say 100), at 100% magnification you have more noise produced by the new sensor…This is a fact about new sensors…same size as old sensors but way more pixels…However the new sensors have high DR and more detail. So the overall IQ is much better than old sensors.

Also, if you have a 23-27” monitor (or even bigger) with IPS panel you can see a huge IQ difference between old and new sensors!

P.S. 100% magnification when viewing the images is for pixel peepers.

    2. And we have never been impressed with your ignorant comments. It has the SAME excellent, low noise sensor as the GX7. You would not know what noise is if hit you in the head.

  10. The big plus for Panasonic for putting an up-to-date sensor inside GM1. That was a problem with previous cameras like GX1 — a great camera with seriously outdated sensor.

Personally, I would prefer a slightly (very slightly) larger camera with more manual controls and a hot shoe. Something like (comparable in size) LX7. For me hot shoe is much more important than the built-in quasi-flash.

    1. Ololol at release the GX1 sensor was not outdated at all.
Also the GX1 still takes pretty nice pictures if you know what you do. And if you don’t brake it, it will probably for 10 more years 🙂

    2. “Outdated sensor”? That’s the crap that non-photographers say to deflect criticism from their poorly composed, improperly exposed, worthless photographs.

  11. My summary of GM1, -1 for touchscreen, -1 for lack of manual controls, -1 for lack of EVF, +1 for IQ, +3 for size = +1 to buy!

Of course this will be a 2nd camera for the times I don’t want to carry my primary camera which makes no compromise. (maybe upcoming GH model)

    1. Wait, that’s stupid, by your count a camera without a touch screen and no manual controls would get a better note… I don’t think a camera with no controls at all is better than one with only a touch screen.

    2. And when you add all those things and bump up the ratings you now lower the size rating to -1. You can’t have them all together. Why can’t anyone except that this camera is designed to be small and that is why it is not loaded with controls, a viewfinder and the like. Its like saying a convertible sports car rates a -1 because it does not seat seven. If you want to seat seven buy an SUV and rate it -1 for not having a fold down top. Good thing people here don’t write reviews.

    1. And if it had a bigger battery, a big grip, a tilting touch screen, printer built in and a huge case to fit all that. News flash everyone- THIS IS DESIGNED TO BE SUPER SMALL! Buy a GX-7.

      1. Hardly.
A hotshoe & connection for the LVF2 would add little size and certainly not compromise the GM1 in any meaningful way. The lack of a hotshoe seems to be the only major complaint. I never use a hotshoe, but an EVF option would be great!

I already have a GX7, but will take a hard look at the GM1 as a secondary body for pancake lenses. The GX7 is pretty damn small as it is.

  12. I’m curious about flash sync speed! Especially because of the fast electronic shutter. Though without a hotshoe you’re limited to optical slaves.
