Video on top: Looks like the Nocticron is going around the world to participate different expositions. I hope it’s also going to be around the “shop-worlds” for purchase soon!

Peter: “I looked at the noise in my E-PL3 sensor from a 60 sec exposure. image (not shown) looks similar to E-M1 noise pattern. I don’t think anyone else has put up a histogram of the noise. I’ll talk to some colleagues of mine about this when I get in to work on Monday. http://electro-garbage.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-noise-issue-that-has-come-to-light.html”
Berneck: “Good article about how shallow depth of field is being overused, and not needed for an excellent photo.: http://www.dpmag.com/how-to/shooting/go-deep.html”
Steven: “thought this might be interesting for the community. I contacted Olympus asking them, if a firmware update is planned for the OMD EM1 (concerning frame-rate for movie mode). Their answer is below. You are welcome to publish the forwarded e-mail below:
Dear Mr XXX,
Thank you for your email.Frame rate is pre-set and given by the file format .MOV and there is no way to influence it.
As for today we have no info about upcoming firmware, but as we were said the movie issues has been mentioned.Kind regards,”
Lee: “Not rumor but I just saw the news you have posted regarding EM1 long exposures, it happens to Panasonic GX1 as well, and those little speckles will be gone if the NR is turned on. I have written about similar issue sometimes ago in my blog –
http://9shift.blogspot.com/2012/02/lumixgx1-night-photography-field-test.html
No intention to drive traffic to my blog but would like to point out exact same issue I see happens to both GX1 and EM1, If the camera sensor has this problem, practically two things can’t be done – long exposure timelapse and startrails because you need to turn on NR and that breaks the interval.
Previously I have tested GF1 and this issue is unseen. I’m curious about GX7/GM1. By the way I don’t think Panasonic fixes the problem 😉“

I am a digital media engineer. I do this stuff for a living. Trust me, the Quicktime specification (.mov) supports any frame rate you care to throw at it. Perhaps the hardware doesn’t support other formats, but it has nothing to do with MOV.
Maybe that comment by the Oly representative (who was probably just repeating what he or she had been told) is a great indication of why Olympus can’t seem to add competitive video to their cameras, while Sony and Panasonic can do it, and Canon is trying despite their hardware limitations.
No. It’s only the indication that the guy paid to answer customers’ mails don’t know a thing about what he says and we won’t blame him since he’s probably only 1 part time job in ~40.000 employees worldwide and can’t be an expert in everything…
Unfortunately, people in 1st level support are mindless parrots everywhere. And people who actually make those inexplicable decisions in product design, product managers and engineers, are often insulated from customers.
And the Lies from Olympus continues…
Admin – I have done the long exposure test at ISO 200 (NR on for 60 sec, and NR off for 60 sec) with my E-M1 and my GX7.
I did reproduce the noise (speckles) with the E-M1 when the NR is off. When the NR is on, the E-M1 is clean – no visible noise. Since I don’t plan to shoot star trails, I’m not concerned about this. The E-M1 is a great camera for my photography, and works great with my 43 lenses.
Doing the same tests with my GX7 under the same ISO and NR on and off, I did not observe any noise. It looked clean. The GX7 should be good for astrophotography. I will repeat this test to make sure I did it right, but so far so good. I love this camera too.
BTW, I also have the Fuji X-E1, and ran the same NR tests on this camera. I observed no noise.
Addendum – I almost forgot to mention that I also ran the on/off NR tests with the E-M5. When the NR was off, the E-M5 was nearly clean. I could only see a few white and red specs (and I do mean just a very few). It looked really good overall. When the NR was on, it was completely clean – no noise.
Moral of the story for me is that for my needs I always have the NR set on in Auto mode for long exposures for all my cameras. This has never been a problem for any of the photography that I do.
GM1 is a very impractical m43 paper weight that cater to those that are stupid and ignorant. Stripped down to its minimum buttons and features & good luck shooting decent photos without blocking the sensitive lcd screen with your stubby thumb.
Worse of all: Marketed and overblown LIE that it’s as small as a Sony RX100! Reality check fanboys: It’s only small WITHOUT A LENS ATTACH. Sony RX100 is already a stretch as a jean pocket camera & for anyone that thinks that the GM1 (with any lens attached) can be a jean pocket camera for all season… Then you need to get out of your parents’ basement and start looking for a job!
LOSERS!
Please take your medication…when you do it is better for all of us.
You worthless 12 year old troll. Get the Hell out of here. Moron.
… Who can’t handle the truth. Get a job and move out of your Mother’s house!
MAN! Sounds like the GM1 broke your window, climbed in, kicked your dog, took a Duce and didn’t flush!!
I’m with you, bro! Let’s find the GM1 and kick it’s ass!
Your jean is too tight: it affects your 2 small brains…
Your jeans are apparently one leg shy.
The E-M1 and GX7 have same sensor, but temperature and electro magnetic rays can give noise on sensor. Als And keep in mind all pixels for PDAF is actually deaht for picture.
Really? Where did you get THAT priviliged information? Cause last I checked pana used an in house sensor and oly a sony one
Of course you can do star trails with an E-M1. Turning Noise reduction on just means a second all black exposure (shutter closed) to compare noise generated and eliminate it from the first frame which could be star trails or anything else.
Using dark frames does hinder making startrails because you seldom use a single exposure, and the time it takes for making the dark frame will cause gaps between the regular frames.
That said, noise on startrail pictures is really easy to remove… unlike stars, noise doesn’t leave trails.
Ok, see what you mean. However, if you’re that serious about it, then you’ll probably use a software for postprocessing that should be fed with several frames with no noise reduction and then some black frames separately to do the noise removal.
So, E-M1 can be used for general astro photography, otherwise I’m stuck as thats one of the main areas I intend to use it for 😉
First time we have see the hood for the 42.5. Looks like they went with the screw clamp like the Olympus 75mm. I’m kind of disappointed with that. I love the snap on hoods of the other Panasonic lenses.
Too bad they didn’t do the interview in english 🙂 The other topics about noise and wrong use of shallow dof becoming standard meal here. Anyway, keeping my eye on that Noctitron.
Yes, I did not understand a word that they said in the video, but it was worth suffering through the bad camera work just to see the ever-beautiful Nocticron and hood!
I think he talked about the Noctichron being a new Leica standard, an extension of the Noctilux with AF, and with OIS. Metal build, aperture in the front, and manual focus. He said it will be available next year. When asked about potential customers, he said something about people looking at the numbers and laughing [whatever that is supposed to mean]. When asked about the price, he said something about that he didn’t have a price; the final price is not set yet. And then he decided he didn’t want to say more about the price… OK– I think this is more or less the discussion on the Noctichron.
thankyou for the translation, lets hope they can keep the price close to the Nokton 42.5
I hope that the price is not close to the Noctilux! 🙂
I think that the price will be MUCH higher than the Nokton. Let’s see, we have a Leica-branded lens with the fastest aperture for any MFT AF lens, also it has a snap (?) aperture ring for manual focus AND OIS (first time I am reading about the OIS). if it has stellar IQ, which we are all expecting, this lens will be VERY expensive, so I better save my Rubles.
Thanks for the translation BLI!
Im willing to bet that the nocticron and the 15 1.7 will be formally announced and released around the same time that Leica releases its m43 camera (see Panas shipment of camera internals).
If the GX1 has speckles then its not PDAF pixels causing it. If it is the pdaf pixels could be powered from a separate source and turned off when a shot is take. Ok, its a hardware alteration!
Or a hot pixel file could be taken at user defined intervals (hourly, weekly, monthly, last used, whatever) and stored in the camera. The file then be recalled and used as the blank shot is used at the moment by subtracting from the real shot. This should be a firmware change only.
No. I do not mean the pixel mapping already available. That’s for dead and stuck pixels not for hot pixels, (something several earlier posters seemed not to understand). A totally different thing. But, maybe, that implementation methodology could be part of the solution using the hot pixel file.
Olympus uses Google translate to communicate in English apparently…
