The Panasonic has a tough competitor in the Zuiko 12-40. Really only attracts Pana-users with the OIS. The Sigma is kinda meh for me cause it’s slowish and shortish, cheap and sharp though. Boy is it ugly with no rubber on the focus ring, what were the designer thinking?
about the sigma 60, it gets even more ugly after normal use, mine has scratches all over them. the coating is verry weak.
Put Gaffer tape around that barrel, for more grip and protection if you want. I love this ugly lens. I find anything wider than f/2.8 simply too much hassle in portrait closeups due to the shallow DoF, so this lens is perfect as it is super sharp right from f/2.8. In fact, it is sharper at f/2.8 than any M43 lens money can buy. I am surprised Sigma did not up the price instead.
The 12-35mm at that price is not the best deal right.
Item location is in Ontario, Canada. Price is US$899, so about C$1,139.89
Aden camera has it for C$945 right now in Ontario.
I have the 12-35mm (24-70)F2.8 and it is a nice lens. But my suggestion is to by the LX100 for a bit less. So you get a an extra camera with a even a faster lens. a 24-75mm F1.8-2.8 And a camera with 4K video and image capture at 24 frames per sec. A really nice camera So you free up you M43 camera for another lens like the 35-100mm F2.8. Or the Oly 45mm F1.8. Etc
Good point
Only downside (as far is i know)
This lens (the 12-35) has a degree of weather sealing. the lx100 has none.
my experience with compact camera’s is that the motors will fail or get jammed by dust, sand etc. so for reliability this lens is better.
True. However I can say for sure that the LX100 is a solid built camera and should not be compared to a compact – it is more in line with the build of the Fuji X100s/t – of course not everyone needs a weather sealed gear. – and if so they would be using the Oly OMD em1 with the 12-40. So for me the common user should consider getting the LX100 instead of getting the lens as having two bodies means lot less lens changes – you also get 4k video etc. you also get a F1.8 lens in a way – 24-75mm f2.8 lens and a m43 camera
So if you don’t have the Oly OMD em1 the only m43 with weather sealing then my suggestion might be something to consider. I do have the 12-35mm f2.8 and it is a really nice lens so either way one is getting good products. But I just think getting the LX100 makes more sense – if one is needing a pro weather sealed lens the Oly 12-40 is maybe a better choice as long as you have the OMD em1
12mm vs 24mm is quite a difference in m4/3. these are not close substitutes in any sense
The crop factor on m43 is x2. So the 12-35mm f2.8. Is. 24-70mm in FF 35mm terms. The lens on the LX100 is 24-75mm F1.7-2.8 in FF 35mm terms. So the only difference is the the lens on the LX100 is 5mm longer but basically the same focal length Both are 24mm at the wide angle and both about the same at the long end angle 70/75. So the LX100 lens is faster at wide end at F 1.7 and longer at the long end by 5mm. My point is that for many it maybe at better option to by the LX100 as price about the same
especially with the LX100 available it shows how terrible the pricing is on the 12-35mm in general. and its really only a solid option for photographers. the 3x zoom isnt enough for an all around lens and its not fast enough for a cinematic shallow depth of field. you can get the 14-140mm + 2 manual fast primes + focal reducer + adapter for the same money as the 12-35mm.
are you really comparing a fixed lens camera, a 12-35 f/2.8 zoom, a super zoom, and primes all in one go?
just the value. whats wrong with that? if you have a budget of $900 and you wanna get as much lens action as you can. this might be a decision to think about…
The Sigma 60mm Art lens is one of the sharpest lenses for MFT (according to Dxomark I think it’s in the top 5), and also the cheapest by a wide margin. Total bargain !
