      1. Like I said, I was never a fan. Too weak for flattering portraits, too long for scenes, imo., ~42mm and ~100mm on the other hand, those are the ‘true normal’ and a damn good portrait length.

    1. Might actually be more precise. With AF we have a relatively large AF-square to work with, and unless you’re shooting something flat exactly from the front, the AF quite often has to guess where withing that square you want the focal plane to be exactly, especially with F1.2. Make the square too small and the AF is unable to focus at all. Just a little manual fine-tuning to the front or back can make all the difference.

No need to waste time dragging any squares around, just shoot. Of course you need focus peaking, a large high resolution EVF, and lots of practice. Imagine that, photography requiring skill. 😉

  1. For that price I’d much rather pay just a little more and get a used Fuji AF lens with nearly identical size/weight and probably superior performance (and AF obviously). These will fail pretty badly…

    1. I do not own any Samyang lens, but I understand that some of their offerings are quite OK. For example, one of their wide angles is better suited than native for astro-work due to absence of coma.

So to say these will fail pretty badly is a bold (bald?) statement.

      1. Bold.
There are simply plenty of manual lenses that one can adapt on mirrorless, so some very specific behaviour like you described will be their only saving grace.

        1. Natively made for Mirrorless AND natively APSC, plus modern coatings, corrective glass elements etc. You can wave all that away in ignorance, but these are no small matters, it is of great value to many who don’t cripple at the thought of ‘losing’ Autofocus. What you see as ‘very specific behavior’ like low coma is just one example of them taking things seriously no less than a Fujinon or Zeiss touit.

      2. True, but the 12mm is a rather special example because it fills a gap in the Fuji lineup. The only Fuji lens to go that wide is the 10-24 which is a lot more expensive and two stops slower. Also AF is not as important for such wide angles and especially not for astro photography.
On the other hand it is very hard to imagine any “special” optical quality the Samyangs could have over the Fuji counterparts, which are generally considered to be excellent optics. And for the longer focal lengths and faster apertures AF is a lot more important that at 12mm, so that will be a deal breaker for many (especially with the 50 f1.2).

Yes, it might be a bold statement. But concerning the Fuji market I’m pretty certain it is true. For other systems they might sell a bunch because they fill gaps in the lineup. In Fuji’s case the are duplicating excellent native offers with AF. Zeiss tried duplicating existing lenses and even offered AF and even they didn’t do well at all from what I’ve read.
