How Good is the Fuji X-T1 FW 4.0 AutoFocus really? The Answer is in these Polls (one for each lens)

 photo KAIZEN_zps1fdb780f.png

Did FW 4 really improve the AF speed and accuracy of your Fujinon lenses?

Some say the improvement is remarkable, some say it’s minimal and some can’t see any change in AF-speed and/or accuracy in good or low light. The feedback is very different (just check out the various X-T1 FW 4 threads here). Moreover, the perceived AF-improvement varies a lot according to the lens you use.

So who is right? Placebo or real improvement? There is one thing FujiRumors can do: put all your feedback into a Poll!

Sure, this isn’t a scientific way to test an eventual AF-improvement, but since FujiRumors is the largest Fuji X related website, we can quickly collect the opinion of hundreds (thousands?) of X-shooters, who tested the lenses in the most different situations, and see what the majority of you think about FW 4.

Of course, I’ll take it for granted, that you’ve checked out the list of tips that helps you to make the best out of Firmware 4 here. and tested the AF-speed/accuracy with the right settings.

happy voting :),

  1. Is it just me… but is the firmware party over? A little progress in speed and a bit of features, this is what kaizen is and has always been. No revolution, not really the new camera that was announced but we’re able to see only a slight progress into a sense – where most (DSLR) competitors have been a (very) long time ago. I must immediately add there are two major changes worth to mention, the fact that this silly compact camera “macro” mode has gone (well, what a relief…) and also in low light the AF is now quite a bit more responsive and accurate. Up to a level that I can finally use the X-T1 in dim circumstances. Maybe after all we are always expecting too much…? The X-T1 has been an excellent step up for Fuji but unfortunately it’s no longer the best in the CSC world – and no firmware will be able to change that fact.

    1. It’s your expectations that are unrealistic rather than any failure by Fuji to deliver.

      Look within for a solution.

      1. My bad. Actually, Fuji’s bad for not distributing cake and streamers as part of the upgrade.

    1. Look at the results of this poll. It’s varying from a ‘little improvement’ to ‘no improvement’ with a few exceptions in mostly the first lenses released. I see posts all over of people that almost got mad by only seeing the announcement that Fuji had a new firmware update. What a exaggeration, what a hype! I think if a lot of these bloggers would revisit the DSLR gear they claim to have dumped in favor of a CSC solution – they’d immediately see that most of the so recited features were already present in expert and pro-DSLRs for a (very) long time. What I want to say… I’m really not blown away. I’m satisfied since any improvement – and surely one for free – is a nice gift and welcome. It is fair enough to please the existing crowd of X-T1 owners but it doesn’t place this camera back on the radar as a very innovative product. I’m saying a while now that Fujifilm urgently requires a complete revamp of the sensor-concept to secure the future of this (marvelous) system. Look at the past, at what happened to other ranges of brilliantly conceived camera’s where Fujifilm at the end couldn’t hold up with competition – since somewhere, they got stuck in the research, development or maintaining not the best strategies.

      1. So what you’re saying is that your expectation of the firmware update is that it would somehow achieve a new sensor?

          1. I’m trying to follow the reasoning: “The X-T1 has been an excellent step up for Fuji but unfortunately it’s no longer the best in the CSC world – and no firmware will be able to change that fact.”
            and
” I’m saying a while now that Fujifilm urgently requires a complete revamp of the sensor-concept to secure the future of this (marvelous) system.”
So I’m still unsure what you were expecting from a firmware update when you clearly want something that the firmware update isn’t capable of?

          2. The Fuji X-T1 being sold now will also have the FW 4.0 not? Did it make them better cameras? Slightly. Vs. direct competition no. Vs the newer DSLRs. No, not at all. It’s really time that Fuji steps up to a better, more advanced sensor. The ones that believe that this old X-trans can still compete with the modern wave of 35mm sensors didn’t ever make a comparison. Do we all want a future for Fuji X? I think an answer is yes. Indeed – if they wait another year the party is over – the only cakes will come from Sony, Olympus & Samsung. That’s the hard reality.

  2. Fuji is mainly a lens and film company. So they really know glass and they know colour and that’s why we love them. Sadly they clearly aren’t the best camera body company. Yes, they have experience in film cameras, but there really wasn’t any magic to making a good film camera. All it needed was two usable dials and something else to set the ISO. Digital and AF cameras require a lot more.
Fuji took the film UI and carried it over to the X-system. That was a great idea but the way of implementing it showed Fuji’s weaknesses. They copied a shutter speed dial with full stops but today everybody wants third stops as well. The way they implemented that kind of sucks. My old Nikkor lenses have full stop clicks but you could set any in-between value as well. Fuji didn’t do that right either at first. DSLRs had long had command dials that turn. Fuji added a terrible joystick-like dial on the X100 and even kept that on the X100S after the X-E1 already had a proper dial implemented. The whole lens handling inconsistencies are another problem in Fuji’s UI. And let’s not talk about GUI, that’s even worse…

I love my Fuji camera. It does many things great and those are more important to me than the handling because I can learn to live with inferior usability. I can’t compensate crappy white balance, exposure metering and terrible JPEGs that my Nikon DSLR has except by investing lots of time in post-processing, which I don’t want to do. But still, Fuji is clearly behind in some areas. They have been catching up but they still have a way to go. Firmware party has never been more than “better, faster and a few more features” except maybe the FW 3.0 for X-T1. But from what I’ve read 4.0 sounds like a pretty awesome update to me. If you were expecting even more, you probably were in fact expecting too much.

Many of us X100S users would already be happy to invited to the party at all…

  3. The “best” is subjective. What you think is the best, may not be what someone else thinks is the best.

If you are saying Sony has the best CSC, I would disagree. I have never liked the design and feel of any Sony cameras. And, while the A7r ii has a full frame sensor and some innovative features, it still does not have lossless RAW files (a weakness that is evident) and until it is released, who knows what other problems it will have.

While they have higher resolution, and many claim that Sony is killing everything in sight, the images produced by many Sony users do not support that claim. I am not saying they are poor images, but they are hardly distinguishable with respect to image quality from those taken from other cameras.

Once it is released, I will test it for myself, as that is the only way to see whether I will be able to produce better images with it compared to my X-Pro 1. Possibly. But, at that price and size (lenses are huge), and with its poor design, the difference better be significant and, thus, evident without pixel peeping for me to even consider accepting the compromises that I would have to accept with a Sony.

  4. From my own personal experience of Fuji, and what I have read on most of the forums. I think it’s just you.

  5. I don’t recall now if it was Fuji or the Fuji enthusiast community that was proclaiming the 4.0 update to be the uber-Jesus update, the update to give us a brand new X-T1 that would also cure cancer and rain down peace on Earth and we would all sing “Kumbaya”…

and I’m too lazy to look back on these here internets to expunge the culprits. Perhaps some of it was from the very site upon which we all now converse…in that I case, I forgive our friend as I am partial to his Fuji Rumors website and enjoy dropping by here almost daily. We can blame those “other” websites, if we need to assign blame.

For myself, I had fun thinking about what the new 4.0 update would do for my X-T1, only to find out it has given me just incremental improvements. Besides, the 4.2 update will be the “One”, right? Wink wink, nod nod.

  6. Am I the only one being happy with the firmware? It works great and added features that I like. And all of that for free.

By the way, I got both, a FW4 and FW3 X-T1 and the performance increase is noticeable. With every lens.
