XF 16mm F1.4 + XF 23mm F1.4 + XF 90mm F2.0 would be the ideal 3-combo prime Fujinon lenses for me.
Are we talking real primes, or wishful-thinking ones?
The former: 14/2.8, 23/1.4 and 60/2.4
The latter: 14/2.8, 23/2 and 56/1.4 (or 1.8).
I really want high-quality but small and lightweight.
Like you, I have two dream sets: the luxury set and the student set.
Luxury set
14mm / 23mm / 35mm
Student set
18mm / 27mm / 60mm
My dream set (need to work harder)
16mm / 35mm v2 / 56mm
My extreme-nerd set
14mm / Rokinon85mm / Samyang 300mm
16, 23, 56 for me.
Fairly simple. If I could have only one: 35mm. Only two: 35mm & 23mm. With only three: I’d add the 14mm. The one I’d never buy again and I’ll never recommend to anyone: the 60mm,
Sounds good to me. But I’d swap the 16mm for the 14mm. Although I love my 14mm but the 16mm seems to be even more versatile.
In 2015, this is a valid dilemma. It looks only 2 mm difference, but in wide-angle it means a world of difference. The 16mm reminds me of the Nikkor AF-S 24mm F1.4G which has always been one of my favorites to work with. Unfortunately… I bought the 14mm (21mm) when it was released but for overall usage it’s a bit too wide for me, effecting in a more pronounced perspective lining I don’t like too much.
Was the 60mm really that bad? I’d like a lens of that length. I am just worried about how it would perform.
It’s a specialty lens. More macro-oriented than really usable for portrait (and certainly event) missions in my eyes. A quite slow AF-performer too, sometimes terribly hunting in low light with a very long throw to get focus too. Undeniable, the optics are excellent. I also had a technical issue with mine but that’s a different story, it’s construnction looked more delicate to me than other XF’s. I think at this moment, you can better purchase the 56mm which is a far more mature concept, the 60mm was just an early days development.
Again, I fully agree. If the lens is in bad mood, it can take up to 3 sec to focus. But optically, outstanding. I don’t sell it though, this lens has a certain kind of charisma. But to be honest, I’m very close to get the 56mm.
Optically outstanding? Jeez, you’re pulling at my heart strings. Shit but good, good but shit. Ahhhh, it’s both! (>_<)
If you want to put it this way, yes. 😉
Even in “non macro mode”? I see a video with a recent FW and in macro mode it’s slow as you write but without macro mode is another world in terms of speed. Did you use it with recent fw?
Yeah, I have this lens since December 2012, and I’ve done all updates for body (X-pro1) and lens. It’s a pain in the ass. Save your money and get something else. The 60mm isn’t exactly Fuji’s fastest AF lens.
Maybe it’s xpro1. I saw a comparison on xe2 and 60 macro is slighty quicker in good light condition (ve the 56) and slightly slower in low light.
It’s quicker on the X-T1 but still – don’t expect miracles – it’s a lens I will only use very occasionally. Again, this is a macro lens (where a fast AF doesn’t matter too much) so its field of application is as portrait lens limited to a very little dynamic kind of situation. No event shooter. I’m not getting excited by a 85mm eq focal lengths too. When Fuji would have made a 35mm or a bit higher FL @ F1.2 I’d maybe have been interested as a match for f.i. 56 to 58mm FF equivalents – but a 60 or 56mm isn’t versatile enough in most cases.
I think while you get far from “our eyes vision” (for many 35mm, other50mm) you loose versatility. So 21mm eq and 135 or 200 can’t be versatile as a 35/50. 85 is not maybe versatile but maybe more than a 135 eq… or not?
Unfortunatly, Fuji still does not offer my ideal 3 primes combo, yes, it offers primes of my favourite focal lengts – 16mm, 23mm, 56mm – but it does not help at all because they are huge what makes shooting not nice expericence using them mounted on small RF type mirrorless Fuji (X-E1/E2/X-Pro1) especially street and reprotage when you want to be discreet. They should bring smaller classic FL primes – 23/2, 55/2 and 16/2, something like i.e, Sony/Zeiss great 24/1.8ZA and 55/1.8ZA.
It will probably come. 🙂
I thought about getting primes only. But when 16-55 comes out, I decided I only need 1 prime and 1 zoom.
I’m in the same boat, although I use the 60mm in place of the 56mm precisely because of the size, and I found that the 60mm focus way faster on the X-T1 than it did on the X-Pro1
18mm, 35mm & 60mm. The original trio really hit the needle on the head. I might pick others too, but the size/IQ ratios are really great. These lenses started the wave.
I don’t have the 60mm, but I wouldn’t mind it. I think autofocus speeds weren’t the best and that is a real pity. The 18mm is also soft, but I just love the size of it and It still does the job.
I live a bit on the wide side:
14mm / 23mm / 56mm
14 + 56 with an ILC X series (change lens by need)
23 with the X100 series
+ MCEX-16 macro adapter in the bag and you’re set up for
almost everything except sports and wildlife! 😉
16mm 1.4, 56mm 1.2, 90mm 2.0
Agreed!
18 mm f/2, 35 mm f/1.4 and 60 mm f/2.4 (now) 120 mm f/2.8 (next year).
16 1.4, 23 1.4+56 1.2 🙂 All I’ll ever need!
I like it. I’d like to replicate but i’m not sure about 35 instead of 23. Isn’t 16 too near from 23? Do you miss a 50ish?
I have 14/2.8, 35/1.4 and 56/1.2, so for now this is the ideal setup for me 🙂
14mm f2.8, the new 35mm f2, and a 70mm f2…
23mm f1.4 “hopefully new 33mm 1.0” and 56mm f1.2 all 62mm filters.
i have the xf 14mm, zeiss touit 32mm and the xf60mm in the bag for the autofocus days.
when i go manual i have a soligor 24mm f 2.8 (konica ar mount) and a konica ar 50mm f 1.7.
Why would I stick to just three?
14, 23, 35 and 56 are all workhorses. For workcourses.
I traveled two weks on Cuba with X-T1/56/1,2 and XPRO-1/23/1,4 as the only Cameras/lenses. It was a perfect combo. You can se some of my pictures from Cuba on my blog http://aperture-11.blogspot.se
The 18, 35 & 56 are my most used. This summer I’ll probably swap the 18 for and X100T for a small versatile bag kit.
If I could only choose 3, I would like choose the 14mm, 35mm, and the 90mm (or the 120mm macro)
It’s usually a subset of the 12 (Zeiss), 23, 35, and 56. Right now 12, 23, 56 for the most range.
I was using three primes for a while, 14mm, 23mm, and 60mm, but now I have switched to two combinations:
23mm and 60mm for a small kit, and 10-24mm, 23mm, and 50-140mm as a larger kit.
With all of these great lenses, it is time for a new sensor. If they can improve the dynamic range, resolution and micro contrast, the X-Series will be a great system. They do, however, need to provide their own bare-bones raw converter (or the abilty to convert the files to a lossless format in-camera) to get the most out of the cameras.
That said, despite what the closed minded will say, an X-Pro 2 successor with the D810 sensor and three reasonably sized fast primes (21mm, 50mm and 85mm) at launch would have been a great choice. Now that the APS-C line is mature, they should add a new full frame or medium format line to compliment the APS-C line.
Yes, Sony has that pretty much already. But, the design, feel and limitations of the A7r are not appealing. Put that sensor in a Fuji camera with Fuji lenses, and that would be great and would sell very well.
While my wife and I both use X-Series cameras, I would buy a full frame X-Series-like Fuji mirrorless camera system if they started developing one.
Why can’t they have both? It is strange that people get upset when someone suggests it. Choice is good. And, if you don’t want it, you don’t have to buy it.
As long as we’re wishing here, why not a contemporary version of the tri-elmar? Of course a good zoom is the modern way to go, but there’s something cool about the tri-elmars.
That would be awesome!
I’ve long been wondering if it wouldn’t be possible to make such a lens similar to a fast aperture zoom lens but with only three or four focal lengths. My hope would be for it to be either smaller at the same max. aperture or faster at the same size.
I don’t know much about the technical stuff but logic tells me it would be much easier to optimize a lens for 3 or 4 FL instead of 40 (like the 16-55). Hm, 16-23-35 f2 would be like an X100 with both converters (slightly better even and certainly much faster to switch FL). What size would it be? I have no idea.
That’s just it – I’m not positive there’s a whole lot of design advantage to doing so – maybe a little, but it’s really just a zoom, and lens design isn’t the same challenge today it was 20 years ago. I’m sticking with cool and unlikely, but desirable. Sort of like my getting to the gym more often.
Indeed! It would be very cool, although extremely unlikely, if Fuji made some autofocus WATE/MATE TE lenses for the X mount.
I do have 14 mm + 35 mm + 60 mm, but I have already ordered 90 mm tele. It’s perfect set for everyday use. (Back in 80’s I used to have 20 mm + 50 mm + 135 mm.)
I’m pretty happy with the 14mm, 35mm and 60mm lenses.
People are down on the 60mm 2.4 a lot, but I acquired one two months ago and really enjoy using it for family portraits.
Autofocus is just fine with the X-T1, unless the light is very low or you are trying to quickly refocus from infinity to a macro subject.
Hoping to use it for botanical photography later on this year.
